It was always boiling when I went back to school for the start of term, so let’s hope it will be in 2012. If you’re a teacher or involved with a local school please get in touch. Early poll results show Open satisfaction Interim results of a Fylde Council “opinion poll” show widespread public satisfaction with arrangements made during the recent Open Golf.

Council bosses are still awaiting the results of a Sheffield Hallam University study into the economic benefits of the 181,300 golf visitors last month.

In the meantime they are number-crunching the views expressed by almost 100 Fylde residents – so far – in a survey designed to garner public feedback.

The figures show: A total of 71% said their overall experience of The Open was “good” (17%) or “very good” (54 %), compared to 21% who said their experience was “poor” (6%) or “very poor” (15%).

53% rated information about car-parking as “good” or “very good”, compared to 29% who rated it “poor” or “very poor”; 46% said tourism information was “good” or “very good”, compared to 13% who rated it “poor” or “very poor”; 52% rated information on tourist-related events, such as the accompanying culture festival, as “good” or “very good”, compared to 20% who rated it “poor” or “very poor”. The tourism-related events themselves were rated “good” or “very good” by 62% of people, compared to 16%who rated them “bad” or “very bad”.

44% of people got their information about the golf and the golf’s impact on the borough through local newspapers. Only one in 10 people say they didn’t receive any information from any source.

Organisation of refuse collection was rated “good” or “very good” by 62% of respondents, compared with 6% who rated it “poor” or “very poor”. Some bin collections were made earlier than usual to avoid congestion later in the morning.

59 % of people said that golf visitors caused “minimal disruption” or “no disruption” to traffic, compared to 27% who said traffic disruption was “major”.

Councillor Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council’s tourism chief, said: “We don’t expect the university study results until late September. They will show how much the area benefited financially from all the visitors. We anticipate the figures eagerly.

“The area was really buzzing in the golf week and we can confidently say that golf visitors are big-spending visitors who will have benefitted the local economy. Perhaps more important is the legacy – Lytham and St Annes were mentioned in a positive light in the global media and we look forward to many people visiting in the future as a result.

“Most important, however, are our residents. This survey is still ongoing and, so far, it shows widespread satisfaction with the golf and its impact on their lives.

“It is an important survey because everyone has a right to speak – and not everyone was happy with all aspects.

We will take a close look at all the results when the survey closes in three weeks – we can only improve for the future if we listen carefully to what people said.

Hundreds of people made the most of a special open day for National Allotments Week at Lawson Road last weekend.

Andy Percival, Chairman at Lawson Rd Allotments, said: “The open day was a great success and I would like to thank everyone who was involved.

Community events such as this are extremely valuable to local people.”

Despite a wet summer the sun shone on Lawson Rd as the crowds enjoyed a superb day around the allotments.

The event, which was opened by Cllr Graham Cain, along with both ward councillors for Marton, Cllr Debbie Coleman and Cllr Jim Elmes allowed people to come and view some of the allotments, enjoy home made cakes from the Victorian café, as well as purchasing some fresh grown produce from the plots.

Cllr Cain, Blackpool Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for allotments, said: “Allotment open days are a great way of showing the community the hard work that is going on at these plots, and the goods that they are growing.”
