Tolleys’ Ryecroft Hall Has been managed by current owners Clive Tolley and his wife Diana since 1996. Optometrists around the country are joining in a national campaign to raise awareness of the importance of eye health. Led by the Association of Optometrists (AOP), the campaign aims to encourage parents not to overlook their children’s eye health this summer and to include a sight test in their ‘back to school’ routine. Up to 1 million children in the UK will return to school this year with an undiagnosed vision problem.

Poor eyesight can have a significant effect on children’s ability to learn and on their behaviour – yet often goes unrecognised by teachers, parents and by the children themselves.

The importance of good eye health cannot be underestimated. Roberts & Quinn Opticians urge parents to remember that taking their children to have their eyes checked is just as important as the trip to the dentist, or

having their feet measured. This should ideally happen around the age of four, or even before, as problems detected this young can be corrected more easily. This month we’re starting on an optimistic mood for an Indian Summer as we approach September! It was always boiling when I went back to school for the start of term, so let’s hope it will be in 2012.

At the time of writing, the new Classic Vehicle Event is ready to roll on 19 August. Booking has closed and a packed day is arranged on the high street and promenade for all the family. Fingers crossed for fine weather!

Work has started on the bus station at Cleveleys, which will be closed for a few weeks while the new bays are built and improvements made to lighting, the tarmac relaid and new toilets built. The new car park at Jubilee Gardens is expected to be complete for October.

LITTLE THORNTON WOMENS INSTITUTE On 1st August, Brian White, a retired police officer showed us his collection of unusual walking sticks, each one with a memorable story. Wearing his old helmet and cloak, he related some witty and interesting moments from his working life.

On 8th August our Birthday meal returned to the ever popular Dog and Partridge at Pilling.

Once again, the food, service and attention to detail was excellent, following a relaxing drive in the evening country air.

Thornton Cleveleys RUFC 50

The new season is fast approaching for Thornton-Cleveleys RUFC and there is lots of excitement and expectation for the next campaign. The season starts on Saturday the 1st of September when both the 1st and 2nd teams host their opening match ups. Thanks to a lot of persistence from the executive committee TCRUFC now have two pitches up and running down at Thornton YMCA which is of great benefit to the club; previously whenever two matches have been scheduled at home, the 2nds have travelled to Fleetwood, Blackpool or Stanley Park to play their games! Now the lads can play on home turf where they belong! Thanks for the hard work guys. The games kick off at 2.15pm for the 2nds and 3pm for the 1sts.

As well as the 10’s tournament TCRUFC have another big club day coming up, the week after the 10’s, on the 18th of August. Bolton RUFC are travelling down to take on the lads in two friendly games, Bolton 1sts vs TC 1sts and Bolton 2nds vs TC 2nds. Both Bolton teams are in higher leagues than Thornton-Cleveleys respectively so this will be a tough test for the players but one they are relishing to take on.

Games will start at 2.15pm so make sure you’re there for the first competitive 15’s fixtures of the new season.

‘Diary of a local Councillor’ Paul Galley is a Councillor for Anchorsholme in Blackpool and each month he writes a weekly diary of what he has been up to.

Monday: This afternoon I visited the Over 50’s Bingo Club which is held at Sevenoaks Community Centre.

It’s always a brilliant afternoon as the people there are so friendly. Alongside the Bingo I had the opportunity to discuss with the members different issues that are concerning them in the area. In the evening I attended ‘The Friends of Anchorsholme Park” meeting. We discussed what ground work needs to be done, and it has been agreed that the group meet on the last Saturday of every month at 10am to help weed the flower beds in the Park. Everyone is welcome to join in, so if you can make it please come along, you will be made to feel very welcome with a free cup of tea from the cafe in the park and lots of fun as we tidy the park up. So please do come along, this is a group I’m really proud of in what we will do to make Anchorsholme Park one of the best in the Fylde.

Tuesday: I spent the first part of the day working at my recruitment business. In the evening I attended a wonderful Scouts award ceremony at Anchorsholme Methodists. I am a Chairman of the Anchorsholme Scout Group and it was a privilege to see such brilliant children who are very enthusiastic about all the Scouts offer them and achieve so much by going. Wednesday: Today was a busy day that I spent out and about in Anchorsholme. In the morning I called the numbers at the Bingo club at St Teresa’s.

The club is steadily growing in numbers which is brilliant to see as I have been attending the club since its creation over a year ago (and

my bingo calling has improved no end). In the afternoon I visited a couple of residents who have had issues with the pavements around their street. It’s been a problem recently where pavements have been dug up and replaced half with paving stones and half with tarmac.

If anyone has any problems with the paving in there area, please contact myself or Councillor Tony Williams and we’ll be there to help you. I also went to have a look at the half barrel planters on Rockville Avenue that I’ve organised. I’m so proud of these planters and the plan is to introduce more next year (mainly where Denville Avenue meets Idlewood Place and Glenarden Avenue).

Thursday: In the evening I had a meeting with some of the members of ‘The Friends of Eastpines Park Friends Group. We discussed our plans for our summer fair day on the 25th August in the park. If you can make it please do come along, the fair promises to be very special this year. In the evening I held our monthly surgery, and it was brilliant as I had several people turn up. It’s great to talk to people face to face, and it gives me a great sense of achievement to be able to help people with their issues. Our surgery is held on the first Thursday of the month at All Saints Church on Valeway Avenue, between 6.00pm and 7.00pm.

Friday: In the afternoon I attended a Blackpool Transport Meeting in the afternoon. I really enjoy these meetings as transport is a passion of mine it’s very rewarding to ask the board challenging questions as to what’s working and what isn’t.

Saturday: Today I helped out at my local church, Anchorsholme Methodists. I went onto the roof and helped them clear out all the sludge, leaves and general debris that has collected over the past few months. I love the variety that being the local councillor gives and today was a classic example where every day brings something new.
