WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

AN ORDERLY LIFE With an eye for detail and a knack for numbers, Max Testa’s fastidiousness should pay big dividends down the road by ellie holstine ’23

N

othing is ever out of line if Max Testa is involved. From cleaning his dorm room at Linfield University to doing drills on the soccer field, the sophomore men’s soccer player insists that everything has to be perfect. “I’m a huge advocate of the idea that if you do an assignment or a workout once perfectly, then you never have to do it again,” he says. Testa’s dream of joining the United States Air Force after graduating from Linfield should come as no surprise to those who know his Type-A personality and his dedication to make everything he does perfect. He loves the idea of organization and order. What better place to apply that love than in the armed forces? Testa plans to enlist after earning his bachelor’s degree in finance. “When you organize money, then you earn lots of money,” he says. “Choosing to study finance was an easy choice. I can organize the numbers and make money.” As a freshman, Testa was enrolled in an online ROTC program through Oregon State University. He was able to use COVID precautions to his advantage. As all of OSU’s courses went online last year, he was able to successfully balance participating in a competitive ROTC program and his Linfield course load at the same time. However, he was disappointed to learn that only two of his ROTC classmates were advanced to become pilots. Upon learning this, he decided that it was best to change course with his plan and now intends to enlist in the Air Force after school. Even though Testa has never flown a plane, he hopes to learn this coming summer. Due to the COVID pandemic, pilot school and learning opportunities were limited. Testa is practicing patience and counting down the days until he learns to fly. “I was supposed to get to fly this past summer, but COVID made things complicated,” he says. Testa lives to see his dreams come true. He describes the many hours of planning it took to determine the path he wanted to take to achieve a degree before joining the Air Force. “Schools like West Point and the Air Force Academy are quite difficult to get into. I knew those were out of the picture,” he says with a shrug.

Instead, he found a route that works best for him. Testa was drawn to Linfield for several reasons, such as being close to his home in Newberg, and having the opportunity to compete in soccer. Once he became aware of all that Linfield has to offer, Testa was hooked. He loves the happy and close-knit community Linfield offers. “When I toured the campus, Linfield did not feel like a small Division III school at all. It felt happy and like there was always things going on.” At Newberg High School, Testa competed in ski racing, wrestling and soccer. Wrestling and soccer were the two sports that stuck with him. He prefers soccer for the team atmosphere and organization, but enjoys wrestling for the detail work necessary, such as having to keep track of diet and muscle-building workouts. “You’ll never catch Max going through the motions,” says teammate and best friend Patrick Moes, “Playing alongside someone like Max, who constantly gives his best, is the greatest thing a teammate could ask for.” On the team, Testa never does anything halfway. It’s what keeps him competitive on the field and keeps the team in check. Nothing can get in the way of Testa’s drive for perfection and organization. “I would say Max’s leadership contributes a lot to the team,” says upperclassmen teammate Connor Heintz. “He pushes the team to work hard and move this program in a better direction.” Watching Testa emerge as a leader on the soccer team as a sophomore is a rare treat. With perfection on the mind and the dedication to make the team the best it can possibly be, Testa’s growth as a leader appears to happen naturally. “Through his hard work, he has the ability to motivate everyone around him on the field,” says Moes. “Anyone can tell you he’s a great person off the field as well. He’s just always a positive person to be around.” Outside of soccer season, you can find him fly fishing, attending wrestling club meetings, or trying something new. He makes it a goal to be positive around everyone and enjoys spending time outside and trying new things. Testa’s organization and natural leadership tendencies are proving to be a large asset on the team. As he enters the role as an upperclassman, all of Linfield has the opportunity to watch him continue to grow as a player and leader.

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.

In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field.

Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand. Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS University adding men’s and women’s wrestling to the stable of sports offerings, marking the first additions in 25 years Linfield University on Monday announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022. The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.” The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. “Linfield right now is growing from a college into a university, opening a second campus, building a new $37 million science center and adding graduate programs, among other things,” said Miles K. Davis, Linfield president. “The addition of men’s and women’s wrestling fits right in with that growth trajectory. I look forward to sitting matside in Ted Wilson Gymnasium and cheering for Wildcat wrestlers in the years ahead.” The group Restore College Wrestling Oregon has been meeting with Linfield’s athletic department for three years, discussing plans, offering help and exploring opportunities together. This will be the fifth program RCWOR has helped start in the state of Oregon, which in turn helps train and educate a new generation of teachers, coaches and professionals. We’re happy to be a part of it.”
