WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

good things happen to good people

Using his own struggles as an example to younger players, Tyler Marr has grown into a leadership role in his third season

Charismatic, humble, and down-to-earth, Tyler Marr fought hard for his spot on Linfield University’s baseball team and has never taken it for granted.

Marr says he had to essentially self-recruit and fight hard to stay on Linfield’s radar. “Being from Montana, when I was playing, there wasn’t any high school baseball . . . I played American Legion Baseball . . . With that aspect, there’s not a lot of recruiting, so I had to learn and understand how to advocate for myself.”

Marr reached out to hundreds of colleges, but he knew he wanted to make his way to the Pacific Northwest, an area he had loved since childhood. The process brought him to Linfield and from his first moment on campus, he was transfixed.

“I remember the first time I arrived at Linfield; I fell in love with it,” he says. Marr was “enthralled” to have the opportunity to connect the Linfield coaches but was disappointed to find they were pretty set on recruiting someone else as a catcher.

Despite the initial coaches’ lack of enthusi asm, Marr was not ready to give up on Linfield and decided to stay in touch with the school, to the point of being “almost annoying with it.” Even with all the work Marr put in himself, it took a little extra push from some shared connections to secure his spot as a Wildcat. “I was very fortunate to have some people help me with that connection and advocate on my behalf. Once (the coaches) showed some interest, it was game over from there, I was all-in.”

Marr committed to Linfield and has never looked back, even when an unexpected challenge was hurled at him the summer before his freshman year. While playing summer ball with his American Legion team, Marr tore his medial meniscus, and his season came to an abrupt end. As the school year started and Marr began training with his new team, he had to navigate trying to fit in while not being able to exhibit his skills.

“It was very interesting to come into college like that. I was still recovering from surgery,” he says, looking back. “It was an 11-month recovery process; coming in as a freshman, not knowing what college baseball was like, not knowing how I would prove myself even if I was healthy.”

After spending his first season playing at the junior varsity level, Marr made a full comeback during his sophomore year and has fully reconnected to why he is so irresistibly drawn to his sport: “Baseball, to me, is a game of failure.”

In no other sport can someone have such an apparent low success rate and still be the best. Marr loves how this motivates him and his teammates. He says that throughout his lifetime of playing, coaches instilled in him the mindset of “How are you going to respond to that failure?” Each day, Marr asks himself this same question and has come to have his entire character shaped by it.

“Outside of baseball, being resilient can apply to life.” Marr says. “Baseball has shaped me into who I’ve become.”

And that person is quite admirable, as described by teammate Jake Hoskins: “Tyler is one of the most genuine people I’ve ever met in my entire life. As a teammate, I know he has my back on and off the field. He’s supportive, helpful, compassionate, and understanding, which helps elevate his game as well as others around him. I will always be impressed by Tyler Marr and the qualities he embodies both as a person and as a student-athlete.”

Hoskins’ words are reflected by the attitudes of all the ‘Cats. Marr describes how the coaches frequently use his journey as an example to the younger players and how his own experiences helped him step into a leadership position on the team. He strives to help the younger players through moments of frustration, reminding them they are freshly out of high school and playing with 22-yearolds, so they need to give themselves some grace.

“There’s a lot of development that needs to happen and will happen,” Marr says. “I bring up my story a little bit without trying to focus on the injury, just more of the fact that those opportunities are coming and there will be time. I enjoy being a voice of reason to the guys who are looking for it and being able to help the other guys out with mental processes or approach or just experiences.”

Marr believes his ability to take on such an important leadership role stems from everything he has been taught by his family. “My relationship with my family is the most important thing in my life . . . growing up, their influence on making me a better person through values like leadership, integrity, transparency and just being a good person.”

Along with baseball, Marr is working toward his degree in exercise science. He plans to follow his father’s footsteps on a somewhat non-traditional path with this degree, taking it to law school so that he can become a lawyer specializing in injury claims, all while being guided by his mother’s words of “good things happen to good people.”

FLASHBACK TO 2013

Just over a decade ago, Linfield was the toast of Division III baseball, winning the program’s third national crown

Arecord-breaking 42 victories. National Pitcher of the Year. NCAA Division III Championship. Linfield achieved all three and so much more in a season to remember.

Championed by three All-Americans but fueled by a preeminent sense of team, the 2013 Linfield Wildcats had both the talent and the mentality befitting of the nation’s top ballclub.

Chris Haddeland (15-1, 1.07 ERA, 96 Ks), Tim Wilson (.401, 87 hits, 31 SB) and Jake Wylie (.396, 66 RBI, 8 HR) posted astronomical numbers and were deservingly recognized as first team All-Americans.

It was also the unselfish attitude and burning desire to succeed modeled by four seniors – Kyle Chamberlain, Jordan Harlow, Michael Hopp and Wilson – that helped the Wildcats erase the memory of the previous year’s playoff snub and bring home the first NCAA championship in program history (in addition to NAIA titles in 1966 and 1971).

“This team hated to lose,” said head coach Scott Brosius. “They were bothered by every loss. It was a healthy thing because it was about their competitiveness. They carried a little chip on their shoulder.”

Perpetually undeterred by adversity and always confident of

victory, Linfield never lost back-to-back games during its run to the championship. The ‘Cats won in a multitude of ways, too. They went 4-1 in games decided by one run and 24-3 in contests decided by five runs or more. In perhaps the most memorable game of the year, Linfield was shut out for six innings before mounting a four-run come-back against Wisconsin-Stevens Point that put the ‘Cats in the driver’s seat at the NCAA Finals.

Few outside the program could have predicted the ending the Wildcats enjoyed. Linfield was unranked to start the season, picked to finish third in the Northwest Conference and opened the year with a shutout loss.

Linfield bounced back with a vengeance, outscoring opponents 30-4 over the final three games of the Arizona Desert Classic. And once the conference season got rolling, they never stopped. Linfield won every weekend of NWC play, including five sweeps, and captured the league title by four games with a 21-3 record.

By the middle part of the year, the secret was out: the Wildcats had secured their first No. 1 ranking of the DIII era and were well on their way to writing even more history. The team pulled its way to Austin, where they had to get past a dangerous Trinity team two of out three times to earn a trip to the NCAA Finals.

Linfield saved its best efforts for Appleton, Wis. The Wildcats got stellar starting pitching performances from Haddeland, Aaron

FLASHBACK TO 2013

Thomassen and Zach Brandon. Hitter after hitter proved clutch at the plate, from Wilson’s game-tying triple against Stevens Point to Nick Fisher’s leadoff double and Chamberlain’s squeeze bunt against Southern Maine in the championship game.

Fisher, second team All-Region honoree, began the year hitting in the bottom of the order, but worked hard to become a complete all-around player and took on a greater offensive role as a threehole hitter by the end of the season.

Thomassen went 12-1 overall with his only loss coming to NAIA powerhouse and national runner-up Lewis-Clark State. Linfield’s No. 2 pitcher could easily go toe-to-toe with any other team’s ace. Two-time first team NWC all-star Kramer Lindell anchored the outfield in center and boasted a .389 average at the plate. First-year starting shortstop Corey VanDomelen held down one of the most important defensive positions and provided energy near the top of the order. Clayton Truex received honorable mention recognition on the all-conference team, but hit a hot streak in the postseason, batting .429 en route to all-NCAA tournament honors.

Simply put, 2013 was a season many Wildcat coaches, players and fans are unlikely to ever forget.

ROY HELSER FIELD

Roy Helser Field, together with Jim Wright Stadium, has developed from a belowaverage facility to a jewel among Northwest small colleges.

The facility has served as host of the 2009, 2010 and 2012 NCAA Division III regional playoffs and is again one of eight designated regional host sites in 2014.

One important addition was construction of a partially enclosed and fully covered batting practice structure, called “Carney’s Cages” in honor of longtime baseball coach Scott Carnahan. This spring, a project is underway to expand the batting cage space

to include an enclosed weight room.

A major change took place in 2008 when the grass infield was replaced with a FieldTurf artificial playing surface. Drainage was improved and construction of covered, enclosed batting cages on the venue site was undertaken. Prior to the 2013 season, the dirt pitching mound was also replaced with artificial turf to match the infield surface.

In 2000, outdoor lighting was added to the field. Musco lighting systems were installed in the fall of 2000 to give more flexibility in scheduling while enhancing the facilities and allowing for NCAA post-season

competition. Outdoor lighting provides additional opportunities for McMinnville-area youth teams during the summer.

Wright Stadium was added to Helser Field in 1990, replacing portable aluminum bleachers and a chainlink backstop.

On May 25, 1991, Linfield dedicated its newly completed baseball stadium at Roy Helser Field in honor of Jim Wright, his wife, Sondra, and parents Edith (Hall) Wright of McMinnville and the late Neale Wright, class of 1929. Jim Wright, a retired Portland businessman, provided a large portion of the funding for the new stadium.

HEAD COACH DAN SPENCER

Dan Spencer is in his fifth year of leading the Linfield baseball program. During his third season at the helm, he guided the Wildcats to a share of the Northwest Conference championship and a berth in the NWC Tournament.

Hired in 2019, Spencer is just the sixth coach to lead the baseball program over the last 71 seasons. Since recording its first Northwest Conference baseball championship in 1923, Linfield has won three national championships (two as part of the NAIA and one in the NCAA), along with 41 additional conference titles.

Spencer became the first non-Linfield graduate to lead the program since 1949. He has strong ties to the Pacific Northwest and brings with him 28 years of coaching experience, including 22 at the Division I level with stops at Washington State, New Mexico, Oregon State and Texas Tech.

He coached at Washington State for three seasons, serving as the Cougars associate head coach, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator.

Before Washington State, Spencer was an assistant for three years at New Mexico (2013-15), where he helped the Lobos reach the title game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament.

He spent a total of 11 years as a member of the Oregon State coaching staff, first as an assistant (1997-2003) and then as associate head coach under Pat Casey (2004-07). While in Corvallis, the Beavers won back-to-back national titles and appeared in three straight College World Series (2005-07).

Spencer spent five seasons at Texas Tech, one as associate head coach and four more as head coach. He was the first Red Raiders head coach to win at least 25 games in each of his first four seasons and his teams defeated 32 nationally ranked opponents.

Spencer began his head coaching career at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash., where he was the head coach from 1992-96. He also spent one season as an assistant at Tacoma Community College.

A native of Vancouver, Wash., Spencer completed his bachelor’s degree in history from Portland State University in 1990. He and his wife, Susie, have three children: Wade, 25, Logan, 22, and Elizabeth, 15.

can’t make the game? catch the lsn video stream

The Linfield Sports Network continues to bring fans live action of all home Linfield baseball games in 2023. Fans can enjoy live video webcasts and play-by-play commentary on their computer, tablet, mobile device or Smart TV.

Live coverage begins 10 minutes prior to the start of each match. Broadcasts include a complete postgame wrap-up with analysis and statistical breakdown.

LSN broadcasts are under the direction of the athletic department’s Broadcast Operations Coordinator, Joe Stuart. In his third year in the position, Stuart oversees all technical production and management of LSN broadcasts as well as providing play-by-play commentary on football, basketball, baseball and softball webcasting in addition to assisting with other athletics communications needs.

A trio of Linfield students will all contribute to the on-air production. Sophomore Brian Kice returns for his second year behind the microphone. He began as a baseball color commentator last spring and expanded his outreach to include volleyball play-by-play duties in the fall. Senior Connor Nelson, a former pitcher with the Linfield Wildcats, is in his first season as part of the baseball announcing crew. He also provided color commentary during the winter months calling Linfield baseball games. Sophomore Johnny Miller

Women’s golfer Josie Daywitt joins softball’s Brynn Nelson and Tayah Kelley as NWC honorees

For the third straight week, three Linfield studentathletes have been selected as Northwest Conference Student-Athletes of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. In softball, Tayah Kelley was named Pitcher of the Week and Brynn Nelson was honored as Player of the Week. Josie Daywitt’s efforts on the course saw her named Women’s Golf Student-Athlete of the Week.

Kelley earned three wins in 14 innings pitched as Linfield swept the four-game series against Pacific this last weekend. In two starts, Kelley hurled two complete games including a complete game shutout, struck out 25 batters and gave up only one earned run. Over three appearances, Kelley ended the weekend with a 0.50 ERA.

Nelson paced the offense with seven hits and a .583 batting average, and registered at least one hit in every game. She drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning in the series finale. Nelson also poured in two runs, two doubles, six RBIs and finished the weekend with a 1.000 slugging percentage.

Daywitt led the Wildcats with low scores of 85 and 82 over two weekend duals against Willamette. Her 18-hole tally of 82 on Sunday lifted Linfield over Willamette in a dual meet at Langdon Farms Golf Club. Daywitt’s score helped the Wildcats secure a 10-stroke team victory.
