Though basketball consumes much of her time, Ella Koebelin is making an effort to build relationships outside of athletics by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27
L
infield University sophomore Ella Koebelin is grateful for living a basketball-filled life that has led her to discover not only an amazing community, but also a second family. “I’ve played basketball probably my entire life,” she says. “I was coached by my dad most of the time growing up, so I grew up in a certain way where basketball was always my go-to and it literally was my life. So, I was just super thankful to be able to play college basketball and that was probably one of my biggest dreams.” While Koebelin’s basketball journey may have started with a significant amount of influence from her father, Chris, it is her own drive and passion for the sport that has carried her to where she is today. “(My dad) allowed me the space to decide if (basketball) was actually my thing and decide if I actually wanted to pursue such hefty goals with the sport,” says the spry point guard from Silverdale, Washington. And while it’s true that she has fulfilled her longtime dream of becoming a college athlete, Koebelin’s path to achieving that goal was not clear cut. “Late in my junior year of high school, I went out with a pretty big knee injury. It was pretty iffy whether I was going to be able to play college basketball,” she shares. While she worked hard to rebuild her strength, she was discouraged to see a lot of schools pause their recruitment processes. The only school that kept in contact with Koebelin was Linfield. “Linfield stood out to me because both the assistant coach and head coach were pretty much the only coaches that continued to talk to me. They were the ones that continued to ask how my rehab was going. The connection that they made stuck with me and I’m really thankful for the coaches.” In fact, Koebelin says she unsure if she would have come back to playing basketball without the support shown by Linfield. “(Head coach Casey Bunn-Wilson) believed in me and believed I could get back to where I was. That goes to show that she trusted who I was as a person and player and that I could overcome whatever.” Koebelin did indeed recover in time for her senior season, impressing Bunn-Wilson sufficiently that she was officially recruited. She joined the ‘Cats last year with five other freshmen and was pleasantly surprised at how quickly the team bonded.

“About halfway through the season, we became almost like a family, which is something I wasn’t expecting in my first year here. I thought it was something that would have to be built over a while.” The freshmen proved their dedication to the older teammates and the team quickly began to work together effectively, accomplishing “some things last year that were record-breaking, that were big things that no one really thought Linfield Women’s Basketball could do,” such as beating rival George Fox for the first time in 15 years. Koebelin’s role in Linfield’s recent success is evidenced by her being appointed one of the team captains this year, an enormous recognition to receive as an underclassman. She shares this position with senior Kaylee Schow and graduate student Janessa Yniguez and is grateful for the opportunity to learn from the older players. “I feel like it’s a really good experience being with (Schow and Yniguez) since they have been in the leadership role before. The three of us get along really well, but we’re also super different personality wise, so we feel that we are a good team to reach the rest of our teammates and be that bridge between our coaches and players,” Koebelin says. Given how dedicated a player she is, it comes as no surprise that Koebelin is continuing to build her life around sports. “I’m a big sports girl and big proponent of what sports can do for people and for society. I would love to be on the administrative side of that and see where that could take me,” she says. Koebelin is already taking steps to grow her knowledge of other aspects of sports. She holds work study positions with Bunn-Wilson and Linfield’s athletic department, which has helped her “see what goes into a lot of stuff Casey does outside of the physical basketball coaching aspect.” Mary Jo Nichols, the administrative coordinator for Athletics, describes Koebelin as “a conscientious worker and a pleasure to have in the athletics office.” Koebelin explores other potential career avenues by being involved in sports summer camps over the summers. She is excited to have the opportunity to work on the management side of the camp. And while Koebelin loves all the sportsrelated roles she is involved with on and off campus, she recognizes the importance of having more connections among the Linfield community. Last year, she almost exclusively spent time with her teammates and so has branched out more this year by becoming a Resident Assistant. Koebelin provides support and kindness for her hall residents and in turn receives an expanded network and more people who are excited to watch her play. “I love meeting all (my residents) and having those connections where I can see (them) on campus, and we can have some small talk even though we’re not running through the same things at Linfield. It’s just nice to have another community and I really enjoy it.”

MEN’S COACH LEVI SIEG Levi Sieg is in his first year as head men’s basketball coach at Linfield. Sieg comes to Linfield from Southern California, where he spent 15 years as a member of the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps coaching staff, rising from assistant coach to associate head coach during his tenure. At CMS, he helped lead the Stags to seven Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championships, the most recent in 2018. A native of Monmouth, Oregon, Sieg returns to the Willamette Valley after residing in Southern California for nearly 30 years. Seig attended Claremont McKenna College and played four seasons of basketball, graduating in 2000 with a bachelor’s degree in economics. Following graduation, Sieg worked
with Pacific Finance Group for 2½ years before enrolling in the Claremont Graduate University and earning a master’s degree in education and a California teaching credential. He completed a second master’s degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia University in Irvine in 2011. Prior to Linfield, Sieg taught at Claremont High School for 20 years. During the 2003-04 school year, he served as assistant boys basketball coach at CHS before being promoted to head coach in 2004. He led the Wolfpack to the CIF Southern Section Playoffs each year. Sieg joined the CMS coaching staff in time for the 2007-08 academic year. Levi and his wife Natalie are raising three sons: Mason, Clayton and Nash.

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.
Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

LINFIELD NEWS The University announced Dec. 26 the naming of Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as interim president, succeeding Miles K. Davis Linfield University has named Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as its interim president. Johnson served as Oregon State University’s interim president during the 2021-22 academic year. Before that, she spent 12 years as an OSU vice president and the top administrator at the university’s Cascades Campus in Bend. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wisconsin, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Michigan State. “I’m very excited to be joining the students, faculty and staff of Linfield University,” said Johnson, who previously served as an OSU faculty member, department chair and associate dean for academic affairs. “Together, along with our alumni and community members, we can continue to enhance Linfield’s long history of providing world-class educational experiences for our students.” Johnson, who met with the Linfield leadership team before agreeing to accept the position, will begin serving as the 21st president in the institution’s history as of January 1. She owns a home in the Bend area, but will relocate during her time as interim president into the president’s house on the McMinnville campus along with her wife, Lori Elkins. Linfield trustees Kirby Dyess and Marvin Henberg co-chaired
the selection committee that was given the job of identifying an interim president following the Nov. 2 resignation of President Miles K. Davis. Davis remained as president until an interim could be named, and pledged to work with the new president during any necessary transition period. “The selection committee wanted someone for the interim position who was not simply a caretaker but an active, collaborative president who can both lead and set the stage for recruiting a new full-time president,” said Henberg, who was Linfield’s interim president during the 2005-06 academic year before moving on to serve as College of Idaho president for six years. “I have no doubt that Becky can do all this and more.” Lucinda Day Fournier, chair of the Linfield board of trustees, thanked the interim president selection committee for its hard work, and said she is thrilled at the selection of Dr. Johnson. She said information regarding the search for the university’s next fulltime president will be released following the next board meeting in February. The national search will involve students, faculty and staff members, and regular updates will be posted to linfield.edu/ presidentialsearch. Johnson said she understands the responsibility of the interim president role, and looks forward to getting to know the Linfield community in the weeks and months ahead. “My experiences leading a large public university as interim president, and a small branch campus in Bend, give me a lot of experience to draw upon at Linfield,” Johnson said. “I really look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff, and getting to know the campuses and communities.”
