WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT
taking the court by storm With only one full season of volleyball available to her due to the rigors and geography of the Linfield nursing program, Seraiah Ochse is giving her best effort to her team and sport by ellie holstines ’23
A
s a Linfield University freshman last year, volleyball player Seraiah Ochse soon realized that the nursing curriculum wasn’t keeping her mind occupied enough. Ochse thought of taking up different hobbies, including longboarding. “I just didn’t have enough things to do to keep me busy,” she says, looking back. “I didn’t play volleyball my freshman year because I wanted to focus on school. But I got bored a little too quickly.” To combat the boredom problem, Ochse resumed her once properous volleyball career and is blossoming into one of the leading attackers in the Northwest Conference. “Seraiah has been a key contributor to the team’s success this year,” praised Wildcats coach Haley Domeck, noting that Ochse’s .354 attack percentage ranks fourth in the conference. After taking almost a two-year break from volleyball to focus on school, Ochse was ready to hit the court running, putting forth maximum effort during practices and open gyms. “With a new coach, the timing was perfect for joining the team. It was easy for me to attend open gyms and talk to Haley about a position on the team,” says the Westview High School grad. With COVID looming overhead at the start of off-season practices in 2020, Ochse did not benefit from having upperclass role models on the team nor did she have the chance to participate in a 2020 season at all. When the volleyball season got postponed to spring of 2021, Ochse began to worry that she might never be able to compete in a normal volleyball season at Linfield. As a nursing major, Ochse is in her fifth semester on the McMinnville campus where she’s been enrolled in nursing prerequisites. In the spring, she’ll migrate to Linfield’s School of Nursing in northeast Portland for hands-on training and clinical nursing experience. “Now, I only have time to participate in one true volleyball season. But I use that as motivation to put my all into this season,” she says.

Ochse’s time to compete in college volleyball is short and sweet. “We are obviously sad to not have available to us (nursing majors) Seraiah and Yssa Alcones next year,” says Domeck. “But we’re excited for what their future holds for them. It’s a huge accomplishment to be accepted into Linfield’s nursing program and we couldn’t be more proud of them.” Nursing prerequisites require a huge time commitment. They often include a lecture class, a four-hour lab, plus countless hours of studying on top of that. “I have so much respect for the freshmen going through their first year of biology and showing up and giving all the effort they have to the team.” Even though Ochse found she had too much time on her hands during her first years at Linfield, she nonetheless respects her teammates pursuing the same ambition. “Seraiah is super determined and a hardworking player,” says teammate Megan Pallas. “She’s always engaged and super supportive of her teammates.” Ochse’s goals for the season are less about winning and more about keeping a positive attitude on the court. “My goal is to smile on the court, and honestly, to have fun,” she says looking at the bright side of her situation. “The more fun I am having the better the game is going to be. I only get one season of playing, so I am not going to waste it being upset over bad outcomes.” Ochse is simply focusing on the positive and the good, which clears her mind to be a force on the court. She instills positivity in her teammates by supporting them and building them back up when times are tough. Success usually is a byproduct of winning, but success is also about having fun and appreciating what your body is capable of. If anybody understands that concept, it’s Ochse. It wouldn’t be surprising to catch Ochse longboarding through campus with an anatomy textbook in one hand and a volleyball in the other while sporting a wide grin on her face. “Seraiah is a fierce competitor who has the drive to be successful at whatever she does. From nursing school to the volleyball court,” says Domeck. She’s worked hard to become an attacker her setters can depend on and a blocker her defenders can trust will close the block.” It’s a career that’s been two years in the making. And now, Seraiah Ochse is ready to take the Division III Northwest Conference by storm.

HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK
building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times
H
aley Domeck is in her second year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle
blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the alltournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”
And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Former Linfield football player Brent Barry is named the Oregon School Superintendent of the Year by nick morgan, medford mail tribune Owing to his school district’s outreach after the Almeda fire and a rapid deployment of online resources for affected students and staff after the fire, former Linfield University football quarterback Brent Barry was recently named Oregon School Superintendent of the Year. The Oregon Association of School Executives surprised Barry with the honor last week during a Zoom meeting with other school district leaders across the state. Barry is superintendent of the Phoenix-Talent School District in southern Oregon. The honor puts the 1996 Linfield graduate in the running for the national superintendent of the year award issued by the American Association of School Administrators, according to a news release issued by the OASE and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators. The two organizations picked Barry for the honor because of the “exceptional” way the district navigated numerous challenges for its 2,375 students following the fire that demolished large parts

Barry’s staff contacted every family in the school district within one week of the fire to get a bead on where the families were located and how they were faring after the massively destructive fire. Barry praised the overwhelming success of Southern Oregon business’ fundraising campaigns for getting the ball rolling. “Resources from Rogue Credit Union and Dutch Bros. really just set us up for success right off the bat to help support our families,” Barry said. Barry is a South Medford High School, Southern Oregon University and Linfield University graduate who taught health and math classes before becoming Phoenix High School’s vice principal, Orchard Hill Elementary’s principal and assistant superintendent at Phoenix-Talent. He’s been Phoenix-Talent superintendent since 2017.
