Always a ‘go-go-go’ kid, Miki Vermeulen is finding new ways to occupy her time outside of sports and the classroom by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27
S
he may not have always planned on playing basketball at a Division III school, but now that Mike Vermeulen is enrolled at Linfield University, she knows there is no better place for her to foster all her passions. Vermeulen was originally looking to play basketball in a higher division, but being recruited during the height of the COVID pandemic meant that a lot of those opportunities were lost. Despite that disappointment, she immediately felt at home during her recruiting tour with head coach Casey Bunn-Wilson. “I could just tell Casey was such a good person and so caring. I just fell in love with her and the program and I was like ‘This is where I want to be,’” Vermeulen says. And in the moments where she does wonder what it would be like to play at a higher level, Vermeulen can always come back to her love of the sport. “I love basketball. It’s about the fact that I get to play, that I’m healthy. I’m so lucky. It’s a sport I’ve played my whole life and I love it. At all divisions, it’s basketball. It’s all the same. Being able to make a difference to a program is all I’ve ever wanted.” Teammate Amelia Solt makes it clear that Vermeulen achieves this goal and more. “She’s a perfect leader for us and I think that we would be a completely different team without her. She’s such a positive force on and off the court and cares deeply about other people, especially her teammates.” Part of what makes Vermeulen such a fierce player is her relentless drive. “I am big on all the hustle stuff. Like my favorite parts of basketball are getting tips or getting rebounds or getting that pass that no one thought you were going to be able to make,” she says. “It’s not even about the scoring for me, it’s about winning and getting better and having fun.” Vermeulen recognizes that the people she shares the court with allow her to have so much fun with the game. “Playing for this team has made my life just so much better. I love my coaches, love the team. We’re all each other’s best friends, which I would say really helps create that team dynamic,” she says.

Vermeulen attributes much of the positive atmosphere on the team to the coaching staff, especially Bunn-Wilson. “We do monthly meetings with her where we just talk about life, we talk about basketball. We get everything that we feel is holding us back out of our chests.” Getting more in touch with what she is feeling has helped Vermeulen in all aspects of her life. She describes herself as always having been “go-go-go,” the type of person who gets restless when she has too much downtime. She was the kid who was put into every possible sport growing up and adjusting to the degree of freedom in college was difficult. Vermeulen remembers feeling lost after the basketball season ended last year. She decided to start reaching out to sororities, something she had never imagined doing, and ended up joining Phi Sigma Sigma. “I fell in love with their philanthropy,” she details, describing the purpose she finds in helping children access fair education. Vermeulen has also taken up a journaling as a healthy way to process her day. “I found a happy medium this year. This year has been a lot more positive than last year was for me,” she shares. In addition to her extracurriculars, Vermeulen is working towards a double major in data science and economics, as well as a minor in in sport management. This full load helps keep her active brain busy while also setting her up for future success. “My dream would be if (the Seattle Sonics) came back, they need a ton of spots filled and I’m just graduating. I can do sports analysis for them or I can work for some part of their organization,” she says, filled with excitement at the mere prospect of being on the staff of an NBA team. Even if her dream gig does not quite pan out, Vermeulen would be happy to work for any professional program in a capacity where she can combine her two great loves: sports and numbers. She may even stick around at Linfield postgraduation to build up her skillset and spend a couple of years coaching. Regardless of what exactly is in store for her future, Vermeulen is sure to carry the lessons learned from basketball with her forever. “I’ve been told I’m the hardest worker on the court,” she says. “I’m not the most skilled by any means, but I’ll leave everything on the court. I’ll pass out on the court before I give up. Just because I love it; it is the best feeling playing.” It’s this degree of dedication and passion that make Vermeulen stand out not only a player, but ultimately as a person who is destined for great things.

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.
Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

LINFIELD NEWS The University announced Dec. 26 the naming of Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as interim president, succeeding Miles K. Davis Linfield University has named Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as its interim president. Johnson served as Oregon State University’s interim president during the 2021-22 academic year. Before that, she spent 12 years as an OSU vice president and the top administrator at the university’s Cascades Campus in Bend. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wisconsin, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Michigan State. “I’m very excited to be joining the students, faculty and staff of Linfield University,” said Johnson, who previously served as an OSU faculty member, department chair and associate dean for academic affairs. “Together, along with our alumni and community members, we can continue to enhance Linfield’s long history of providing world-class educational experiences for our students.” Johnson, who met with the Linfield leadership team before agreeing to accept the position, will begin serving as the 21st president in the institution’s history as of January 1. She owns a home in the Bend area, but will relocate during her time as interim president into the president’s house on the McMinnville campus along with her wife, Lori Elkins. Linfield trustees Kirby Dyess and Marvin Henberg co-chaired
the selection committee that was given the job of identifying an interim president following the Nov. 2 resignation of President Miles K. Davis. Davis remained as president until an interim could be named, and pledged to work with the new president during any necessary transition period. “The selection committee wanted someone for the interim position who was not simply a caretaker but an active, collaborative president who can both lead and set the stage for recruiting a new full-time president,” said Henberg, who was Linfield’s interim president during the 2005-06 academic year before moving on to serve as College of Idaho president for six years. “I have no doubt that Becky can do all this and more.” Lucinda Day Fournier, chair of the Linfield board of trustees, thanked the interim president selection committee for its hard work, and said she is thrilled at the selection of Dr. Johnson. She said information regarding the search for the university’s next fulltime president will be released following the next board meeting in February. The national search will involve students, faculty and staff members, and regular updates will be posted to linfield.edu/ presidentialsearch. Johnson said she understands the responsibility of the interim president role, and looks forward to getting to know the Linfield community in the weeks and months ahead. “My experiences leading a large public university as interim president, and a small branch campus in Bend, give me a lot of experience to draw upon at Linfield,” Johnson said. “I really look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff, and getting to know the campuses and communities.”
