Wine studies major Megan Stanek plans to travel the world following graduation in search of a master’s program and more faces to make smile
by riley 0monaka ’24
Megan Stanek lights up every room she walks into. Equipped with her bubbly personality and elec tric smile, Stanek is always ready to pick up a teammate or recommend a wine pairing. Hailing from Fairfield, California, the outside hitter on the Linfield University volleyball team spreads sun shine wherever she goes.
“I value my friendship with Megan so much,” says good friend Anika Shuckhart. “I’m so glad that she is a part of my life. Megan is someone who never fails to make me smile and works hard to keep me a part of her life.”
Stanek is in her fourth year in the wine studies program. Once she gains her degree in the spring, she plans to travel the world and work in the food industry.
“I hope to get a master’s degree somewhere around the world. My eyes are set on Australia,” Stanek says. “After that, I want to work in food and wine, specifically in the sensory evaluation of how foods make meals and how the little details within wine can change the flavor profile for the whole meal. I want to work in events, hotels or restaurants curating wine lists and menus with chefs.”
Her future may be in Australia, but her story began in California where a young Stanek could be found running around her childhood home. In Stanek’s youth, there was no shortage of sports. She may have started her athletic career in soccer cleats, but always seemed destined for the court.
“My mom signed me up to play rec soccer when I was little, which I dreaded going to, but that push made me into who I am today and how I am as a person,” she says, looking back. “Being an athlete has always been a part of my identity and I have both of my parents to thank for that.”
Growing up, Stanek was surrounded by love and adoration. She could always rely on her dad for advice. It was Stanek’s parents who pushed her to pursue her interests in wine.
“My mom and dad saw that spark in me when I was listen ing and talking about wine, so they helped me find a small internship at a winery in Napa and then found wine studies at Linfield,” she says.
To this day, Stanek’s dad will ask her to select wines for family dinners. Even outside of her immediate family, Stanek is surrounded by inspiration. Stanek’s aunt and grandmother have been the source of Stanek’s admiration for many years. Stanek strives to be selfless and free-spirited like her role
models.
“My grandma has always been a role model because of how genuine she can be without trying. She always has fresh baked foods and treats whenever I visit, as well as little pieces of jewelry for me that I still wear all the time,” Stanek says.
“My aunt has always been a free spirit and I ad mire that. She pursues any passions she has; she would take random classes just because they sounded interesting to her. My aunt would say that taking those classes allowed her to see more of the world and different cultures.”
Anyone who meets Stanek will agree with Shuckhart, who calls her “the life of the party.” Stanek brings life to her relationships. She breathes love and passion into those whom she meets.
“Megan took me under her wing. She took me – a little freshman – along with her and her friends and helped me meet people and make connections. She is much more outgoing than I am,” Shuckhart says.
Outside of volleyball and school, Stanek is involved in fraternity and sorority life on-campus. As a member of Zeta Tau Alpha, Stanek is responsible for putting on social events and acting as a liaison between the sorority and the administration.
“I love being a part of fraternity and sorority life and being able to represent something big ger than myself in a sense of philanthropy. I have made so many incredible memories in Zeta as well. I’ve met the most incredible women who are a big part of who I am today,” she says.
In her free time, Stanek enjoys being close to the ocean. The shark tattoo on her left knee is not just for show, Stanek is a swimming enthusiast. In addition, Stanek is passionate about ocean conservation. As a water-lover, she wants to see the planet thrive for gen-erations to come. By all accounts, Stanek is an engaging conversationalist and soon-to-be wine expert. On the court, Stanek is laser-focused, yet sports make up only a small portion of her identity. Stanek is a good friend first and an ocean-lover second.

PUGET SOUND LOGGERS
HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK
building the foundation
Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times
Haley Domeck is in her third year as Linfield head volleyball coach.
In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979.
Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience.
Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level.
Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle
blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior.
Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team.
Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

NEW TO LINFIELD
Justin Salge has been hired as assistant baseball coach, Linfield baseball coach Dan Spencer announced recently.
Salge will oversee the outfielders and work with the hitters. He will also take a prominent role in athletic event operations, playing key role in coordinating on-field logistics and student operations crews on football game days.
“I am incredibly ecstatic about being hired here at Linfield,” said Salge. “Being able to learn and develop as a coach under Dan Spencer is something I’m really looking forward to.”
Salge comes to Linfield from the University of Texas at Austin, where he served as the baseball program’s camp specialist while simultaneously serving as a recruiting counselor within the Office of Admissions.
His coaching experience includes stops as head baseball coach with the Power Summer Collegiate League, at North American University and Houston Community College, and assistant coaching roles with the Houston Summer Collegiate League and San Antonio College. Salge is a birddog scout for the Tampa Bay Rays and has operates his own private baseball instruction business.
Salge received a bachelor’s degree in history from Stephen F. Austin University and followed by earning a master’s degree of education from Midwestern State University. He is approaching completion of a doctorate degree in global sport leadership from East Tennessee State University. Additionally, Salge completed a hitting and pitching certification course from Rapsoda, a data-driven baseball training technology program.
He expects to lend his experience to multiple areas of the Linfield baseball program. “Respectfully, I think I can help the program everywhere: baseball analytics, baseball strength, developing the JV program while also assist-ing the varsity program in all capacities.”
Salge, a native of Aransas Pass, Texas, is enjoying the milder climate and the engaging people he’s met in Oregon.
“I’ve never been to the Pacific Northwest until now. It’s very homey. People here are open, encouraging and welcoming. Joining the Linfield staff has been a tremendous experience.”

Milner, who also serves as lead play-by-play voice for Linfield soccer, started his broadcasting experience with the LSN last year covering soccer, providing color commentary on basketball broadcasts, handling occasional play-by-play duties for volleyball, basketball

Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and
And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World
magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility.
In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list.
The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate
students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible.
Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.”
U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West.
Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021.
Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their con tribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The full rankings can be found at washingtonmonthly.com/2022-college-guide.
