WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

TIME IS ON HIS SIDE A firm believer in time management, Logan Clizer makes maximum use of every available minute in the by ellie holstine ’23

N

o seconds are ever wasted when Linfield University junior Logan Clizer is around. Whether it’s taking advantage of quickness on the soccer pitch or encouraging his fraternity brothers to do more with their education, Clizer is a star at being proactive with his time. “I’m an advocate for taking advantage of the time I have here to do the things I love while I have the opportunity to do so,” he says. “I believe it is better to be proactive than reactive.” Over the summer, Clizer took advantage of his time away from school and soccer to do some career exploration. Spending his second summer as a marketing intern for Continental Marketing Inc., Clizer learned the ins and outs of marketing, taking an inside look at his dream profession. He is interested in a career in marketing or perhaps product development. “The marketing field is cool. I could see myself being on the marketing team for a professional sports team.” Not wasting a minute of his time at Linfield, Clizer has risen to the role of President of the Theta Chi fraternity, where he has had the opportunity to improve leadership skills and learn how to direct people. His goal for his term was to improve the chapter’s reputation at Linfield. “It’s nice being part of an organization and having the opportunity to lead an organization. I’m learning a lot about how to lead and manage people,” he says. A student leader on campus as well as a leader on the soccer field, Clizer inspires the team to enjoy the game and try their best. He focuses on his love for the game and is thankful for the opportunity to play soccer at the collegiate level. “My favorite part about Logan is that he brings good banter amongst the team and always puts a smile on everyone’s face at practice,” says teammate Harrison Davis. Clizer appreciates the game of soccer for unique reasons. He enjoys how adaptable and well-rounded a

player has to be in order to be successful. He also likes how soccer differs from football in that the plays are not necessarily planned out. Whatever happens on game day is rarely rehearsed beforehand. “Soccer is a player’s game,” he says. “We aren’t sitting in a room making plays like football. Everything happens in the 90 minutes on the field.” Standing 5-foot-8, Clizer is one of the smaller players on the team. Utilizing a get-in, get-out strategy, Clizer takes advantage of his agility and quickness to avoid getting beaten up on the pitch. When a larger player approaches him, he counters their balance by trying to slip out of the way. He focuses on clean tackles and always attacks with a plan in mind. “I’m small, but I’m quick and adaptable.” Clizer is a highly selfmotivated student and player who believes in using his time wisely and not wasting a minute. He attributes his work ethic to his father, Max. Clizer is constantly inspired by his dad’s motivation and work ethic, and appreciates the sacrifices his dad made to get to where he is now. “I learned everything from my dad, including work ethic, self-motivation and discipline,” says Clizer. Moving forward, Clizer hopes to continue gaining experience in the marketing field. He also hopes to emerge as a leader on the men’s soccer team and spur his team to more wins this season. “Logan is a great teammate on and off the field,” says Davis. “He’s always willing to help one of the guys and holds the leadership role of the junior class really well.” Having no problems with motivation, Clizer works hard to keep the opponent off balance, and is hungry to see his team enjoy success. He’s also excited to watch the ways in which Linfield coach Andrew Duvall will continue to build the men’s soccer program and continues to strive to be the best student-athlete he can possibly be.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS University adding men’s and women’s wrestling to the stable of sports offerings, marking the first additions in 25 years Linfield University on Monday announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022. The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.” The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. “Linfield right now is growing from a college into a university, opening a second campus, building a new $37 million science center and adding graduate programs, among other things,” said Miles K. Davis, Linfield president. “The addition of men’s and women’s wrestling fits right in with that growth trajectory. I look forward to sitting matside in Ted Wilson Gymnasium and cheering for Wildcat wrestlers in the years ahead.” The group Restore College Wrestling Oregon has been meeting with Linfield’s athletic department for three years, discussing plans, offering help and exploring opportunities together. Larry Bielenberg, a four-time NCAA All-American and the 1975 heavyweight national

champion for Oregon State, has been a primary point of contact for RCWOR through that time. “We are thrilled that Linfield is restarting its men’s program and initiating a new women’s program,” said Bielenberg, whose daughter graduated from Linfield in 2006. “It’s been a pleasure for Restore College Wrestling Oregon to work with Garry Kilgore and we appreciate the decision from President Davis to make it happen. This will be the fifth program RCWOR has helped start in the state of Oregon, which in turn helps train and educate a new generation of teachers, coaches and professionals. We’re happy to be a part of it.”

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex had been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases. In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass

field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1.

Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Team dressing rooms are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand.
