WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

the heintz effect Hard-working yet fun-loving Connor Heintz wants to leave a lasting impression on the Linfield men’s soccer program by ellie holstine ’23

C

onnor Heintz, a senior on the Linfield University men’s soccer team, embodies the phrase ‘work hard, play hard.’ Whether in school or while competing in soccer, Heintz always puts in the work to get the job done. And at the end of the day, he knows how to have a good time, too. On a typical day, the Maple Valley, Washington, native can be found studying or kicking the ball around with some friends. The four-time Dean’s List honoree continually works to better himself throughout all facets of his life. “Connor raises the level of the team with his character and his commitment to academics,” says Wildcats coach Andrew Duvall. As a senior majoring in sport management and minoring in sports economics, Heintz has taken his love for soccer to a whole new level. He has come to appreciate sports from a broader perspective and can now appreciate the nuances and skill required to manage a team. “My favorite part of my major is not having classes on Fridays, for sure,” Heintz says with a smile. “But also being able to work around the world of sports.” At Linfield, Heintz has elevated his love of sports to new levels. During his sophomore year, Heintz took the opportunity to study abroad as part of a January Term class in England. During his time across the ocean, Heintz was enrolled in “The Economics of Football.” Heintz earned credit towards his major, explored an incredible country, and studied the sport he is so devoted to – all at once. Heintz calls the course, taught by Randy Grant, the best he’s taken since coming to Linfield. It took Premier League soccer from his television screen and turned it into a potential career field to work in. “Econ 398 was my favorite class because I got to study football in England and experience what it was like watching the teams in person instead of on my TV screen.” Even after Heintz graduates this spring, his love for soccer will never fade. After Linfield, Heintz hopes to put his sport management major and sports economics minor to good use by entering the world of sports business. Working in sports is where he says he will be the happiest. As with everything he does, Heintz is willing to grind to get where he

4

wants to be in life. In the end, Heintz’s most important career goal is to work in an organization where he’s excited to go to work every day. Even though he might not have the fine details hammered out, Heintz is undeniably heading down a path for success. There’s more to Heintz than meets the eye. When he’s not on the pitch or in the classroom, he might be found playing video games or board games. Being a game fanatic in more ways than one, Heintz is a member of the Super Smash Bros. club on campus. Not surprisingly, he loves playing other sports besides soccer, among them snowboarding. One thing is certain, whether he’s kicking a ball with friends or engaged in a serious melee battle, Heintz always has fun on his mind. While Heintz always gives his best effort, he also emulates a positive attitude and is incredibly supportive of those around him. Heintz is a valuable team player. During his freshman year, Heintz was moved to center forward and had to learn the position for the first time. Since then, he transitioned to the center back position and is still working to adjust. He works hard to fit within the team dynamic and make the program better. It’s obvious to anyone who knows him that he truly desires to see this team succeed because he loves the program. “Connor adds value as a flexible player who can fit multiple roles on the team,” Duvall says. “I wish I could work with him for several more years.” In his career, Heintz has battled a number of injuries. It’s impossible to tell how much work he puts in behind the scenes, but it’s clear how much he loves the team. He’s optimistic about this season and is striving to make an impact on this program. The Heintz Effect will be here long after he’s gone. He inspires other players to want to follow him while increasing others’ love for the game. “I just want to work as hard and as smart as I possibly can to improve the team,” Heintz says. “I want this team to become a powerhouse, but we must put in hard work to get there.” Even if Heintz’s vision of team success doesn’t come to fruition during his time at Linfield, he is nonetheless shaping his teammates and helping the program move forward. Heintz’s fun-loving personality and hard-working mentality have shaped him to be the best kind of leader. Whether it’s inside jokes or doing his best to be his best, Heintz does all he can for this team. “My goal for this season is simply to grow this program into something better than it was the year before.”

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.

In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field.

Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand. Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”

And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Former Linfield football player Brent Barry is named the Oregon School Superintendent of the Year by nick morgan, medford mail tribune Owing to his school district’s outreach after the Almeda fire and a rapid deployment of online resources for affected students and staff after the fire, former Linfield University football quarterback Brent Barry was recently named Oregon School Superintendent of the Year. The Oregon Association of School Executives surprised Barry with the honor last week during a Zoom meeting with other school district leaders across the state. Barry is superintendent of the Phoenix-Talent School District in southern Oregon. The honor puts the 1996 Linfield graduate in the running for the national superintendent of the year award issued by the American Association of School Administrators, according to a news release issued by the OASE and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators. The two organizations picked Barry for the honor because of the “exceptional” way the district navigated numerous challenges for its 2,375 students following the fire that demolished large parts of Phoenix and Talent and took out roughly a third of student and staff homes, according to OASE President Tim Sweeney, who is the Coquille School District superintendent.
