basketball is life
Growing up as a coach’s kid has had a major influence in the way Chase Bennett approaches his life and career by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27
I
t is no exaggeration to say that Chase Bennett’s entire life revolves around basketball. It’s his passion, his talent and his home. The Linfield University basketball player earns his place on the court every single day. His father, Randy Bennett, is a highly successful Division I basketball coach at St. Mary’s College of California, meaning the sport has been central to Bennett’s life as long as he can remember. “I kind of just grew up around high-level college basketball. From a really young age, that’s just (been) my whole life, kind of,” he says. Despite his father’s position, Chase Bennett says he never felt any obligation to play basketball. He was given the space to choose his own path, which helped him kindle a more genuine passion. “There was never really any pressure to have to play basketball or to do a sport. If you don’t love it and you don’t want to play, then you’re not going to play.” And love it, he did, describing how “I played every sport as a kid: football, baseball, soccer, track…but ultimately, I kept coming back to basketball.” By the time Chase entered high school, he was resolved to focus exclusively on basketball. An athlete’s high school experience can make or break their future in their sport. Fortunately, Bennett found himself on “a really, really good team” that helped him build the talent, skills and drive that brought him to Linfield. Bennett’s high school team won the California State Championships his sophomore year and although the following years were greatly impacted by COVID, his involvement allowed him to develop a deep appreciation for the importance of a healthy team dynamic. “A lot of that success was just the culture. It was a really good team with a lot of good players,” Bennett says. “But more than anything, my high school program had really highlevel culture in terms of winning, the leadership, and everyone’s attitude. Everyone fully bought in.” Bennett had been raised to place a high value on teamwork and cooperation. He says directly experiencing how rewarding that kind of camaraderie can be “changed my perspective on winning and how team basketball should work.” Coming from such a high-value team made Bennett especially selective in his college search. He says he “didn’t want to go to a losing program or a program that didn’t care about culture.”

Seeing how Linfield takes enormous pride in both its athletic prowess and team dynamics, it makes sense that Bennett quickly felt at home in a Wildcats uniform. “When I came on my visit to Linfield, and after spending time with the guys and talking to the coaches, I really thought that the culture was at the highest level,” he says. While Bennett has never regretted his choice to commit to Linfield, he cannot deny that his freshman season last year was a tough one. The team missed the conference playoffs by one game and the head coach ended up leaving the program. Bennett recalls how fraught that stretch of time was for the players, as well as their resilience and commitment to push through it. “Everyone really came together and stayed together to not freak out and just be patient, waiting for them to hire a new coach. We all wanted to stick it out at Linfield. It’s because we care so much about the program and it’s such a good situation,” Bennett says. Bennett recognizes that not all teams could have persevered in the same way. He’s quick to describe what makes this group of Wildcats so special. “The connection between the group of guys is probably one of the biggest things. Everyone on our team likes each other on and off the court. As simple as that sounds, it’s like a family away from home. All my teammates are like my brothers. There are teams that everyone’s been on where it’s not necessarily like that.” Being on such a tight-knit team means every player must be fully immersed and able to see themselves as part of the whole. Bennett embodies this completely, detailing that “my personal goals are really just engulfed in the team success. I think if I do what I need to do, then our team can (be successful).” The respect Bennett holds for his team is mirrored in how they speak about him. Linfield assistant coach Alex Saindon calls Bennett “an incredibly hard worker both on and off the court. He’s always the first in the gym and is consistently looking to improve himself and the team as a whole. His leadership also stands out. Chase is incredibly valuable for us as we set out to instill our culture in Year 1 as a coaching staff.” Bennett’s natural leadership abilities will continue to shine not only as a player, but eventually as a coach. “After college, I want to get into coaching college basketball. I’ve known that for a while now; ever since I could start thinking ‘OK, what do I want to do in life as a job?’ I want to still do something in basketball. For some people, it’s just like a sport, but this is kind of like my everything. It feels like it’s my whole life, so I don’t really want that to change,” he says. Truly, who better to inspire and lead the next generation of dedicated, driven players?

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME
The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.
Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

RECENT HONORS A total of 28 fall athletes are recognized for outstanding performance with places on Northwest Conference all-star teams Four Wildcats represented Linfield on the Northwest Conference men’s soccer all-star team following the conclusion of the fall season. The tally marks the highest number of Linfield men’s soccer players so honored since the end of the 2015 season. Angel Hernandez, Sid Kosaris and Seamus Miller all were selected NWC second-team while freshman Ross Vargo was tabbed as honorable mention. Hernandez and Kosaris are repeat selections from last season and Miller picked up his second award with his first coming in the 2021 season. The women’s soccer team also had four players earn postseason Northwest Conference honors. Anna Dazey earned second team All-NWC recognition and teammates Jenna Stanley, Janae Lewis and Riley Omonaka were each tabbed as honorable mention selections. Lewis is the only repeat selection from the 2022 season. Dazey led the Wildcats in goals scored with seven while Omonaka finished second on the team in total goals with five. Lewis appeared in only six matches due to injury, scoring three goals. Stanley was an anchor for the Linfield back line, playing in 16 matches and totaling 1,238 minutes. Stanley’s efforts on the backline helped Linfield tally six total shutouts, which included two 6-0 wins over Redlands and Willamette. On the volleyball court, senior setter Claire Johnson earned her first career postseason award after being named All-Northwest Conference honorable mention.
