THE GAME OF LIFE

Lessons learned in basketball are sure to remain with JT Estes long after his playing career has ended

JTEstes’ goal is to inspire, motivate and bring out the best in his teammates.

The 5-foot-9 Linfield University guard has spent untold hours on the court with his basket ball teammates, allowing him to build long-lasting friendships and create indelible memories. Estes credits the quality of his Linfield experience to his teammates who have stood by his side during his three seasons in the program.

“My favorite memories so far at Linfield have been creating great friendships with my teammates and friends on our team. Linfield has also granted me the opportunity to compete at the next level on the basketball court which I wouldn’t trade for anything.”

Despite battling injuries the previous year, Estes has still made it his role to lift up his teammates and continue motivating them for success on the court.

“Another one of my favorite memories has to be winning the (2021-22) conference title,” he says. “Despite being hurt, winning that title was a great experience to be a part of.”

Estes acknowledges his role on the court is to serve as a leader, motivator, and good friend to his teammates.

“My role is to constantly make sure we are improving and getting better. I think of myself as a leader, as someone who can help guys achieve their maximum potential. On the court, it’s just to be smart, take good shots, take care of the ball and make winning plays.”

Estes targets his leadership and ability as a role model to one of his previous coaches.

“I have learned a lot from my previous coach, Frank Allocco Jr., who has also played a vital role in my life. He has not only helped shape me both as a person and as a basketball player. I attribute almost all my basketball success and personal growth to him.”

Estes also credits members of his family as important influences in his life.

“My role models also include my mom, dad, aunts, uncles, and other family members. Given that I have spent so much time playing basketball, my club and high school coaches have also played a huge role.”

Estes hails from Walnut Creek, California, where he lives with his mother, Lisa, and younger sister,

“My mom has been a huge role model and inspiration in my life. I am who I am today because of her. She has played the role of both parents in my life as my dad, John, passed away when I was 12 years old. Shelby is now a freshman at San Diego State University.”

When he’s not on the basketball court competing, Estes spends his time in the classroom working toward a bachelor’s degree in finance.

Estes enjoys expanding his boundaries and being a mentor to people outside of basketball.

“I’m pursuing a finance degree. I’m looking forward to following my intended career path of being a financial advisor. I’m into setting myself up to be successful and preparing myself for the future,” he says.

“I want to offer people that same opportunity to be well off financially as they take on life.”

Estes doesn’t feel ready to give up his passion for basketball once his playing career comes to an end. When he finally does hanging up his court shoes, he is eager to remain on the court while encountering a new perspective for the game.

“I want to continue my love for basketball and pursue being a college basketball official when I’m done playing,” says Estes, who referees youth, high school and junior college basketball during the summers in California. Estes is happy competing with his teammates and working every day. His passion for basketball and for inspiring others won’t diminish once his time at Linfield comes to a close. He has worked relentlessly to uphold his role on the Linfield team, crediting his success on the court and the classroom to his professors, teammates, coaches, and role models who have shaped him into the leader he is today.

MEN’S COACH SHANAN ROSENBERG

Shanan Rosenberg is in his 10th year as Linfield men’s basketball coach. Since taking over leadership of the program, Rosenberg has guided Linfield through a “worst-to-first” transformation, capping it in 2019-20 with a share of program’s first Northwest Conference title since 2001. Linfield followed with a second co-championship in 2021-22. Under Rosenberg’s direction, the Wildcats have reached the NWC Tournament in four consecutive seasons, ending a seven-year playoff drought.

In nine seasons as head coach, hIs career record at Linfield stands at 116-99 overall and 74-64 in NWC play.

Rosenberg has twice been named Northwest Conference Coach of the Year. His first league honor came in 2017 after guiding the program to its first winning season since 2008 and first conference playoff berth in five seasons. The most recent NWC accolade came in 2020. That season, the Wildcats went 20-6 and were

crowned conference co-champion during a run that included victories over nationally ranked Whitman and Whitworth on consecutive nights. Over a six-season span after taking over the program, the Wildcats elevated their conference record from 2-14 to 14-2.

Rosenberg was previously head men’s basketball coach for 11 years at Foothill College, a two-year college near Palo Alto in the south San Francisco Bay region. At Foothill, he compiled a 186-131 win-loss record. His 2012-13 team went 22-5, achieving the best regular-season finish in program history.

A native of central California, Rosenberg starred in basketball at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, leading the Lancers to a Central Coast Section championship in 1988. As a student-athlete and three-year letterman at UC-Davis, he earned all-North Coast Athletic Conference honors while leading the Aggies in rebounding his final two seasons.
