Omonaka is making an impact on her friends, teammates and peers. Roommate Kami Echiverri admires her soccer teammate’s work ethic.
by MARISSA DOLSON ’24
Living life in the moment has opened up many new opportunities for Riley Omonaka to thrive at Linfield University. Expanding adaptability and flexibility have been key factors in her all-around maintaining happiness.
Linfield has opened up a variety of opportunities for Omonaka. Being heavily involved in campus life can be stressful, but has brought Omonaka amazing friends and mentors along her journey at Linfield, for which she will for ever be grateful.
“I like to joke that I’m building my ‘King’s Council’ (like in Game of Thrones) because of all the amazing people I have to rely on for advice and empathy,” says Omonaka.
Not only is Omonaka expanding opportunities in her cam pus life, but she is also expanding her knowledge through her education as a double major in Biology and Journalism & Media Studies. College can create a lot of pressure to establish setin-stone career goals, but Linfield allows students to feel safe and secure as they maneuver through the unknowns.
“These last couple years of college have really shown me that not having a set ideal plan isn’t always a bad thing. Right now, I’m focused on doing and studying things that make me happy. Ultimately, the rest will figure itself out,” says Omonaka.
Riley’s family has given her continuous support along the way. Omonaka’s family members are her closest confidants and have encouraged her to venture out and explore her passions as she’s progressed through the different stages of her life.
Omonaka’s family dynamic has influenced her tremen dously. She is constantly inspired by the people who raised her and as such, is driven to leave an impactful impression on the people around her.
“I’ve always really ad mired my grandfather and auntie,” she says.“They are both incredibly hard-working and have always put the good of the community above themselves. I was in the sixth grade when my grandfather died (he was my best friend and twin flame if you will) and I was absolutely amazed at the number of people who came to his funeral. It seemed like this end less sea of people with stories about him and it always left the impression on me that he lives on in the hearts of his community. I aspire to be that impactful one day.”
“When you talk to Riley she’s sweet, kind, and funny, but once she’s on the field, her alter ego comes out,” says Echiverri. “The first time I played with Riley was at an ID camp for Linfield and I remember my jaw dropping because she was sliding a lot and came out with the ball every time. I knew from that moment that I wanted to be her friend.
“Riley is one of my best friends because she always has my back on and off the field. She’s so caring, smart, and observant, and will give me the same energy. I’m thankful for Linfield because it gave me our friendship.”
Omonaka models the importance of being adaptable. Through trial and error, she has narrowed her priorities down and has set herself up for academic success. Omonaka has created her tools and checklists that help her succeed on and off the field.
Her academic career at Linfield has enabled her to grow as a person – pushing her to ask the questions, helping create her personalized tools, and understanding her worth does not stand within a letter grade.
“More than anything, having a demanding class load has forced me to shed my ego. I don’t have the time or energy to worry about things that don’t matter,” says Omonaka. “I have to ask stupid questions in class because I don’t have time to worry about whether or not my classmates will judge me. I have learned to trust my instincts and focus on the things that matter. Getting a B on a test does not evaluate my worth and doesn’t deserve any space in my brain. I’ve really stepped into a checklist mentality.”
Omonaka’s checklist is simple: “You live and you learn.”
She always strives to give her best effort on the soccer field and in the classroom. The bad days don’t define her, she takes everything in as a learning opportunity to do better next time.
During her summer, she enjoys staying active and working with the youth in her community.
“I really enjoy learning things that serve no ‘purpose’ in my life, such as things that aren’t necessarily productive.
Right now, I enjoy crochet ing, quilting, knitting, and journaling. When I’m home in the summer, I coach at a youth soccer club and do Ju Jitsu.”
Learning to grow from ad versity plays a big part in shaping Omonaka’s college experience. While balancing multiple dif ferent lives, Linfield plays a big role in her growth. She excels in the classroom, focuses on her priorities, continues to expand her knowledge, and discovers new passions that simply make her happy.
Riley Omonaka’s formula for success in college is to not dwell about her future, but to soak in everything at once

AND LACROSSE COMPLEX
THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last.
Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured.
The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.
In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1.
Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase
2 could begin as early as 2021.
Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand.
Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

HEAD COACH STEVE SIMMONS
Steve Simmons is in the third year of his second tenure as Linfield women’s soccer coach. He is also in the midst of his fourth year as Linfield Assistant Athletic Director and Director of Soccer.
Simmons brings 15 years of Division I coaching experience at Oregon State and Northern Illinois, in addition to serving five years as head coach of the Linfield men’s and women’s soccer and women’s lacrosse programs from 1996 until 2000.
Simmons, who owns a career record of 190-166-31 in 20 seasons as a collegiate head coach, oversees the men’s and women’s soccer teams, and serves as an advisor to the women’s lacrosse coaching staff.
During his first tenure at Linfield, he took over a men’s team that went 1-15-0 in 1995 and led the Wildcats to three seasons of
double-digit wins, including a 21-1-1 mark in 2000.
Most recently, Simmons spent nine years as head coach of the Oregon State men’s soccer program where he won 63 games in his first seven seasons, including a Pac-10 runner-up finish in 2009. Prior to Oregon State, Simmons compiled a 59-473 record in six seasons as head coach at Northern Illinois.
He began his coaching career as an assistant at his alma mater, Concordia University-Portland, in 1990 before heading to Gonzaga University in 1994 as an assistant coach. A head coaching position followed the next season at Division III Whitworth University. Simmons led Whitworth to a 9-8-2 record in his first season to earn NWC Coach of the Year honors before moving on to Linfield.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS
Linfield rated as the top-rated liberal arts school in Oregon
Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and Rankings. And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility.
In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list.
The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible.
Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.”
U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West.
Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021.
Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their con tribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The full rankings can be found at washingtonmonthly.com/2022-college-guide.
