WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

unlimited capability

When he steps on the basketball court, Josh Puccinelli tunes out external noise and focuses on reaching his full potential by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27

T

hroughout the years he has spent as part the close-knit Linfield University basketball team, junior guard Josh Puccinelli’s strong connection to the sport has only grown and expanded. “When I’m on the court with my friends, with my team, that’s where most of my identity is and it’s how I feel like myself out there,” he says. “At this point in my career, my goal is to not only compete and excel at the college level, but also to build connections that are rooted through being a part of the team and the bonds that are built on and off the court and make the game so much more enjoyable. “There are times when I’m playing now where I feel like a little kid on the playground again, just based off of the energy me and my teammates bring by being such a tight-knit group.” Having played since the age of five, the San Francisco native has long found basketball to be a “sanctuary” where he can “focus on the game like nothing else in the world even exists.” While this level of dedication is common among high-level athletes, Puccinelli takes it to another level via his interest in the mental aspect of sport. Aided by his mentors, coaches, and personal discovery through reading, Puccinelli has gained a deep appreciation for how “the mental side of sports is just as important as the physical side. You could have all the ability in the world, but if you’re not in a mental headspace to play the game, then you’re not going to perform at the highest level.” Going far beyond simply acknowledging this fact, Puccinelli takes conscious effort to apply it every time he plays. “One of the techniques I always reaffirm in my head is ‘Unlimited Capability,’ which is telling yourself that you have unlimited capability to do whatever you want on the court. A lot of times you have the ability to do something but it’s your mind that’s blocking you from doing it. So focusing in on that term helps me set myself free and play the game more at ease.” His mental resilience becomes especially important in a season such as this one, which Puccinelli describes as being full of “ups and downs.” After experiencing several losses in a row, “People can tend to hang their heads a little bit.” But Puccinelli appreciates how the team “can enjoy each other’s presences because of how tight-knit we are. I think that helps us bounce back from stuff like that.”

january 26, 2024

Part of what allows the ‘Cats to foster such strong bonds is that they see themselves as not only teammates, but brothers. An unexpected struggle during the beginning of his time at Linfield quickly keyed Puccinelli in to this unique dynamic. “I remember in my freshman year, I had to move dorms because my dorm flooded. Reece Gibb, who is a graduate student now but was a junior at the time, got his truck and helped me move all my stuff,” Puccinelli recalls. “I offered to get him some pizza or buy him some lunch, but he just told me to pay it forward to an underclassman when I’m an upperclassman. I thought that was really telling to the culture we have here on our team. It’s funny because he probably said that and forgot about it, but it’s always been in the back of my head when I’m on the court and off the court. Gibb himself recognizes the effort Puccinelli puts in across all areas, describing the younger player as “an amazing teammate, always an easy-going guy. He’s super hard working and a fantastic athlete, one of the best cutters and finishers I’ve ever played with. Off the court, he’s a great guy to joke around with and I’ve always been impressed with his high sense of fashion. I’m super grateful to have spent three years with him.” As Gibb mentions, fashion is another of Puccinelli’s passions. Along with teammate Danilo Petrovic, Puccinelli runs PD Thrifts, a business dedicated to finding and selling so-called “vintage gems.” “Through (PD Thrifts), we’ve established a following on Instagram where we will post the clothes that we find. We also take these clothes to all kinds of vintage markets across the PNW where we are vendors.” While Puccinelli hopes that his side gig can “lead one day into opening a store front or something like that,” he also plans for sports to play a central role in his future. As a Sport Management major, he is actively gaining skills that will allow him to either join “the apparel side of the sports industry, or my dream job would be to work in the front office for the Golden State Warriors.” Puccinelli says he’s already doing work that allows him to experience his sport from new perspectives. “I’ve been working as a youth camp counselor for the past seven years. I also coach the Special Olympics basketball in the Northern California division. I’d say that it’s given me a new perspective and appreciation for the game and it’s taught me how to adjust my instruction to different demographics since a lot of the dynamics are different.” These roles are enabling Puccinelli to expand upon his already vast ability to uplift and support others. He describes his efforts as “really fulfilling experiences, with being able to pass my knowledge and skills onto the next generation of hoopers and be a mentor for these people.”

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.

Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

LINFIELD NEWS The University announced Dec. 26 the naming of Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as interim president, succeeding Miles K. Davis Linfield University has named Rebecca “Becky” Johnson as its interim president. Johnson served as Oregon State University’s interim president during the 2021-22 academic year. Before that, she spent 12 years as an OSU vice president and the top administrator at the university’s Cascades Campus in Bend. She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wisconsin, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Michigan State. “I’m very excited to be joining the students, faculty and staff of Linfield University,” said Johnson, who previously served as an OSU faculty member, department chair and associate dean for academic affairs. “Together, along with our alumni and community members, we can continue to enhance Linfield’s long history of providing world-class educational experiences for our students.” Johnson, who met with the Linfield leadership team before agreeing to accept the position, will begin serving as the 21st president in the institution’s history as of January 1. She owns a home in the Bend area, but will relocate during her time as interim president into the president’s house on the McMinnville campus along with her wife, Lori Elkins. Linfield trustees Kirby Dyess and Marvin Henberg co-chaired

the selection committee that was given the job of identifying an interim president following the Nov. 2 resignation of President Miles K. Davis. Davis remained as president until an interim could be named, and pledged to work with the new president during any necessary transition period. “The selection committee wanted someone for the interim position who was not simply a caretaker but an active, collaborative president who can both lead and set the stage for recruiting a new full-time president,” said Henberg, who was Linfield’s interim president during the 2005-06 academic year before moving on to serve as College of Idaho president for six years. “I have no doubt that Becky can do all this and more.” Lucinda Day Fournier, chair of the Linfield board of trustees, thanked the interim president selection committee for its hard work, and said she is thrilled at the selection of Dr. Johnson. She said information regarding the search for the university’s next fulltime president will be released following the next board meeting in February. The national search will involve students, faculty and staff members, and regular updates will be posted to linfield.edu/ presidentialsearch. Johnson said she understands the responsibility of the interim president role, and looks forward to getting to know the Linfield community in the weeks and months ahead. “My experiences leading a large public university as interim president, and a small branch campus in Bend, give me a lot of experience to draw upon at Linfield,” Johnson said. “I really look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff, and getting to know the campuses and communities.”
