WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE Linfield sport management major Cesar Cruz-Espindola’s formula for success is simple: Set goals and achieve them by ellie holstines ’23

W

hether it’s playing soccer, or supporting other Linfield University sports programs, Cesar Cruz-Espindola is always ready for game day. “As a senior on the team this year, Cesar is always pumping up the team,” says teammate Marques Herrera-Kuehn. “He’s always eager to score, he always shows up ready to put himself ‘All In.’” In the sport of soccer, goals are what determine the outcome of the match. A forward on the Linfield men’s soccer team, Cruz-Espindola emphasizes “My job is simple: to score goals.” A mainstay in the starting lineup, Cruz-Espindola hopes to remain there this season. His speed and dedication to the team is what keeps him in that spot. “I want to see the team succeed and I am going to do everything I am capable of doing to make us successful,” CruzEspindola says. “Cesar’s most significant contribution is his attitude. He is willing to do what the team needs from him,” says Wildcats head coach Andrew Duvall. Cruz-Espindola enjoys being a leader and “keeping the sophomores in line.” He wants the team to succeed and he wants to personally prosper. When teammates aren’t doing their part, he has no problem confronting them and motivating them to give their all to the team’s collective effort. “I’m excited to watch Cesar continue to grow as a team leader this season,” says HerreraKuehn. Injuries and basic wear and tear on the body are challenges Cruz-Espindola must overcome. He strives to find a comfortable medium between pushing too hard and pushing just enough to see results. “As a player, Cesar works as hard as his body will allow. He fights for his team at every opportunity. He has good speed and uses it to his advantage throughout every match,” says Duvall. “I’ve always played soccer. I don’t remember doing anything but soccer,” says the senior from Beaverton, Oregon. “I don’t really have an interesting story of how I ended up doing soccer. I’ve just always done it.”

Coming in as a freshman, Cruz-Espindola was pleasantly surprised to discover that playing soccer collegiately is much more competitive than high school. From the team itself to the teams Linfield plays, “everybody is just as good as you are.” Finding ways to adapt and be the better player took time and some getting used to. “That’s what weeds out the other players,” Cruz-Espindola says. “You have to be smarter, more aggressive and faster, to stay competitive.” As far as the men’s soccer team dynamic goes, the Wildcats carry an “iron sharpens iron” mentality. The better the other players competing for field time in the striker position are, the better Cruz-Espindola will eventually be. His goal is to remain on the field throughout the full two-hour match. His primary objectives are to score goals and stay positive. “At the end of the day, all that matters are the goals you score. It’s what determines whether you win or lose. So my job is simple: To score goals.” However, Cruz-Espindola’s priorities are not focused strictly on soccer. At Linfield, he’s pursuing a bachelor’s degree in sport management. “I just love sports and the community it creates. It doesn’t have to be soccer. I just love being around sports,” he says. Knowing that sports create opportunities for athletes and for spectators to come together, Cruz-Espindola wants to help contribute to keeping this community alive. “I’m hoping to continue my education with the new Linfield sport management master’s degree program.” In 2020, when COVID started to spread, Linfield fall and spring sports seasons were halted for a semester. Every athlete gained an extra year of eligibility in every sport they participated in. Cruz-Espindola is excited to continue his soccer career another semester while completing his education in a field he enjoys. Beyond Linfield, Espindola hopes to gain an entry level position with the Portland Timbers or another local sports team. “It doesn’t have to be soccer. I just want to stay in the sports industry,” he says. With his experience as a studentathlete and the end goal of earning a master’s degree in sport management, Cruz-Espindola should be well equipped to tackle a career within the sports industry.

SOCCER AND LACROSSE COMPLEX

THE DREAM OF A MODERN soccer and lacrosse facility at Linfield University has become reality at last. Linfield director of athletics Garry Killgore spearheaded a vision for a $1.55 million project to revamp the current soccer and lacrosse facility. Completion of the project’s first phase was completed in December 2020. Phase 2 will get underway once funding is secured. The vision for substantially upgrading the Linfield Soccer and Lacrosse Complex has been discussed for many years. With the help of private funding from a cross-section of donors, the project is proceding in two phases.

In Phase 1 of the project, the natural grass field was converted to FieldTurfTM, providing Linfield teams an ideal year-round practice and playing surface while substantially reducing maintenance and game setup costs. The field was draped with branded mesh screening, providing for a more intimate and enclosed setting. Six enclosed storage spaces to house team equipment and supplies are included in Phase 1. Phase 2 calls for a new seating for 250 spectators as well as an adjoining paved plaza. It includes construction of a new pressbox on the west side of the field. Phase

2 could begin as early as 2021. Dressing rooms for the women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s soccer and teams are included as part of a multi-purpose structure planned for the stadium’s northwest corner. The new building will also contain a dressing room for visiting teams and game officials, restrooms and a concession stand. Under the leadership of Linfield alumnus Rob Gloeckner of Tarkett Sports, the grass field was converted to a FieldTurfTM surface. The custom-branded storage containers are being furnished by Boxwell co-founder Rod Bolls, a former Wildcats soccer player.

LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”

And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

WILDCATS IN THE NEWS Former Linfield football player Brent Barry is named the Oregon School Superintendent of the Year by nick morgan, medford mail tribune Owing to his school district’s outreach after the Almeda fire and a rapid deployment of online resources for affected students and staff after the fire, former Linfield University football quarterback Brent Barry was recently named Oregon School Superintendent of the Year. The Oregon Association of School Executives surprised Barry with the honor last week during a Zoom meeting with other school district leaders across the state. Barry is superintendent of the Phoenix-Talent School District in southern Oregon. The honor puts the 1996 Linfield graduate in the running for the national superintendent of the year award issued by the American Association of School Administrators, according to a news release issued by the OASE and the Coalition of Oregon School Administrators. The two organizations picked Barry for the honor because of the “exceptional” way the district navigated numerous challenges for its 2,375 students following the fire that demolished large parts of Phoenix and Talent and took out roughly a third of student and staff homes, according to OASE President Tim Sweeney, who is the Coquille School District superintendent. Barry’s staff contacted every family in the school district within one week of the fire to get a bead on where the families were located and how they were faring after the massively destructive fire. Barry praised the overwhelming success of Southern Oregon
