WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT telling the stories of sports Discovering a passion for photography in high school, Jake Downing enjoys revealing the hidden emotion behind sports by KARLIE VERCAUTEREN ’27

B

asketball has been Jake Downing’s primary passion since he was in the third grade. The junior Linfield University basketball player is determined to make the most of the remaining of his time on the court. Downing has been active his whole life and spent his younger years involved in multiple sports, but the intensity of basketball won him over in middle school. “Baseball and soccer were a little too slow-paced for me,” he says. “I like basketball because it’s high-tempo and everyone’s moving around and having fun.” After zeroing in on a single sport, Downing spent the next several years playing for school teams and getting close with other players. That proved essential as COVID hit during Downing’s junior year and he was no longer able to practice in any official capacity. Along with a handful of other players who loved the game just as much, Downing practiced with a trainer several times a week on a modified tennis court. In a world where so much was lost so quickly, he recalls “that was our social life.” “We didn’t know anything else but playing together. We all just decided to keep doing it on our own one more year. It was just fun, and we all wanted one last ride together.” And when he wasn’t spending his quarantine downtime on the court, Downing was contemplating his future. “I thought about college a lot. Having that season taken away from me, I was like ‘I don’t want to end here, I want four more years.’” With the help of his trainer, Downing started reaching out to schools and made contact with Linfield. When he visited campus prior to committing, Downing was struck by the team’s exceptional dynamic. “(The players) all shook my hand and looked me in the eye,” he recalls. Downing was welcomed immediately, saying he already “felt like I was part of the team, and I was loved just as much as all the other guys.” The idea of equal treatment for all players regardless of class level or playing time is of great import to Downing. “We all play an important role, no matter if you’re scoring 20 points a game or if you’re handing out waters on the bench. Everybody earns respect in a different way. We all need each other.” Downing’s own role in promoting that dynamic is em-

phasized by fellow player Chase Bennett, who describes Downing as “a teammate you can always count on. He has a superb attitude, and he puts in the extra effort to be his best. Off the court, he’s always there for his teammates and is simply someone that you want to be around.” Even for how close he is with his team, it’s been helpful for Downing to build communities outside of basketball. At Linfield, he’s become very involved with the Journalism and Media Studies department where he fosters his passion for photography, an interest he discovered several years ago. “My junior year of high school, I took a photography class really thinking nothing of it, it was just to fulfill an art credit. But I loved it. I’ve always liked to draw and do some art and stuff, but I never really took it seriously until I picked up the camera. Then I was like ‘Wow, this is really fun.’ I also realized that it’s a good way to stay around sports when I’m not playing myself because I realize that after my four years here, I will be done with my basketball career.” Through his studies, Downing has found an incredible mentor in Professor Kevin Curry who “makes us all feel so welcome. He’s so friendly and has a lot of knowledge and always encourages his students to fulfill their potential.” Downing is a photographer for the student publication The Linfield Review, which has helped him to hone is craft and find meaning in the work he is doing. “A lot of journalism is storytelling. I never really realized it before, but I love showing emotions through my photos, especially within sports. I think a lot of the times, we never realize that sport has so much emotion attached to it.” Downing’s “eye-opening” experiences have broadened his perspective and come back to basketball to make him more appreciative of the time he spends on the court. “Sports are an escape from real life where you can do something you enjoy and let go of your emotions and you’re kind of just free.” As the season wraps up, Downing is making the most of that sense of freedom. “I’m really looking forward to just going to practice with the guys and hanging around them. I love all the guys on the team, so it’s really fun.” Downing intends to maximize his remaining time as a Wildcat by making connections to help with his future and, most importantly, by living each moment to its fullest. “I’ve got one more year here after this year, so it’s kind of crazy how fast time goes. I feel like I just stepped on campus; I remember the first time I pulled up. It goes so fast. I always make sure to tell the freshmen to enjoy their time here. I cannot believe it’s my last year at Linfield next year.”

ATHLETICS HALL OF FAME

The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases in NCAA Division III The Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame, sponsored by Pacific Office Automation, was established in 1998 as an means to honor former outstanding athletes, coaches, staff and contributors and to preserve the memory of their past achievements. A new class of inductees is honored at the Hall of Fame Banquet each fall. Inductees are chosen from a list of submitted nominations and voted upon by the Hall of Fame Executive and Selection Committees. The 20-member panel is made up of current and former staff members, past inductees, a member of the media, and a former athlete representing each of the preceding six decades.

Nominations may be submitted by any interested person but must be submitted in writing using an official nomination form. Hall of Fame nominations are considered in any one of six categories: Athlete, Coach, Team, Athletics Staff, and Meritorious Service. Nominations must be accompanied by appropriate background information. Nominations are now accepted online. The deadline to submit nominations each year is March 1. Athletes, through athletic achievement, must have brought distinction and honor to themselves, to Linfield University and to its intercollegiate program. Athletes are eligible for induction 10 years following their graduation class. Coaches, athletic administrators, or athletic staff members must have served on the staff for at least 10 years. At the time of induction, they must no longer be active in that position. Individual non-athletes, who in some manner have made extraordinary contributions to the success of the intercollegiate athletic program, may be considered for a meritorious service award. Eligibility of teams is based upon exceptional accomplishment at and above the conference level, with the team ranking among the nation’s elite. Housed within the Paul Durham Lobby and Foyer, the Linfield Athletics Hall of Fame and Hall of Champions is regarded as one of the most impressive athletic showcases of any NCAA Division III program in the country. Matching 55-inch touch-screen monitors chronicle the expansive array of Hall of Fame inductees. Visitors to the Hall of Fame can read details about each inductee as well as search by name, sport, classification and year of induction. The electronic displays provide access to summaries of every national champion, both team and individual, plus listings of major award winners.

She holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Wisconsin, and both a master’s degree and a Ph.D. in agricultural economics from Michigan State. “I’m very excited to be joining the students, faculty and staff of Linfield University,” said Johnson, who previously served as an OSU faculty member, department chair and associate dean for academic affairs. “Together, along with our alumni and community members, we can continue to enhance Linfield’s long history of providing world-class educational experiences for our students.” Johnson, who met with the Linfield leadership team before agreeing to accept the position, will begin serving as the 21st president in the institution’s history as of January 1. She owns a home in the Bend area, but will relocate during her time as interim president into the president’s house on the McMinnville campus along with her wife, Lori Elkins. Linfield trustees Kirby Dyess and Marvin Henberg co-chaired

the selection committee that was given the job of identifying an interim president following the Nov. 2 resignation of President Miles K. Davis. Davis remained as president until an interim could be named, and pledged to work with the new president during any necessary transition period. “The selection committee wanted someone for the interim position who was not simply a caretaker but an active, collaborative president who can both lead and set the stage for recruiting a new full-time president,” said Henberg, who was Linfield’s interim president during the 2005-06 academic year before moving on to serve as College of Idaho president for six years. “I have no doubt that Becky can do all this and more.” Lucinda Day Fournier, chair of the Linfield board of trustees, thanked the interim president selection committee for its hard work, and said she is thrilled at the selection of Dr. Johnson. She said information regarding the search for the university’s next fulltime president will be released following the next board meeting in February. The national search will involve students, faculty and staff members, and regular updates will be posted to linfield.edu/ presidentialsearch. Johnson said she understands the responsibility of the interim president role, and looks forward to getting to know the Linfield community in the weeks and months ahead. “My experiences leading a large public university as interim president, and a small branch campus in Bend, give me a lot of experience to draw upon at Linfield,” Johnson said. “I really look forward to working with the talented faculty and staff, and getting to know the campuses and communities.”
