taking the next step Nursing major Terra Leiber is excited to be moving forward to the next phase of her educational journey at Linfield’s Portland campus by riley 0monaka ’24
M
aking people smile is Terra Leiber’s specialty. As a member of the Linfield University volleyball team, she acts as a beacon for positive energy. She will be sorely missed when she departs the McMinnville campus to enroll in classes at Linfield’s nursing campus in Portland. “Every night, Terra she goes to bed with a smile on her face and wakes up the same,” Paige Richards, Leiber’s teammate and roommate says. Leiber’s life at Linfield is filled with laughs and happy memories. Her teammates and classmates have made Linfield home for her. “I will always cherish the relationships I’ve made with my teammates and the memories I’ve made while playing volleyball with my best friends,” Leiber says. Leiber, a defensive specialist from Highlands Ranch, Colorado, is in her second year in the program. While her time on the volleyball court is drawing to a close, Leiber is setting aside her sadness and choosing to enjoy her remaining moments wearing her No. 22 jersey. “Moving away from campus to the Portland campus next year is scary, but I’m excited,” she says. “I’m thankful I got to play two years of volleyball, although it will be difficult to leave.” As a nursing student, Leiber looks forward to immersing herself in her dream career. She isn’t quite sure which specialty area she would like to work in, but is excited to discover her passion. Certain chapters in Leiber’s life may be concluding, but Leiber is ready to begin a new and exciting adventure. In high school, Leiber became certified as a nursing assistant. Receiving her CNA so early seemed to cement Leiber’s future career as a nurse. She has worked hard for several years to achieve her goals, further demonstrating that she is more than capable to enter the field. “My time at Linfield has allowed me to discover what I’m capable of,” Leiber says. “Being challenged academically and balancing schoolwork as an athlete has forced me to be on top of my schoolwork. I have been able to gain confidence in myself and my learning abilities.” As she forges ahead into nursing school and 4

then her career, Leiber draws inspiration from her biggest role model: her mother. “Seeing my mom’s strength and drive has made me want to work harder. Watching her build her business and overcome challenge after challenge was so inspiring to look up to growing up,” Leiber says. Leiber, much like her mother, is known for her unyielding resilience and for leading by example. She’s the ideal teammate: “Terra radiates positive energy and keeps the peace even amongst chaos,” Richards says. Her calm demeanor and happy nature are qualities that make her a great nurse. Until then, Leiber will continue to be a funny and energetic teammate and friend. Outside of school and volleyball, Leiber’s favorite activity is skiing. Growing up in Colorado, Leiber spent most of her free time outdoors with her family. She started skiing at only four years old and fell in love with the cold-weather sport instantly because of her ability to let go and embrace the current moment. “I love skiing because it feels freeing, being able to let yourself disconnect and be outside while doing something active is the best feeling,” Leiber says. Leiber grew up in the mountains of Colorado. Surrounded by nature she gravitated towards the snowy peaks. Sitting at an elevation of nearly 6,000 feet, Highlands Ranch is located on the outskirts of Denver and about an hour away from the Breckenridge Mountain. Thus, it was natural for Leiber to spend her free time on the ski slopes. Her favorite mountains to ski are Crested Butte, Beaver Creek and Vail. “One of my favorite memories on the mountains would be skiing with my best friends from high school or skiing on Christmas eve with my family,” she says. When she’s not on the mountain or the court, Leiber can be found curled up with a good book, out on a hiking trail, or spending quality time with her loved ones. Leiber is very close with her family. She grew up in a family brimming with love and support. Her relationship with her sister continues to grow as they get older. “My parents have always been so supportive of what I’ve wanted to do with volleyball and school,” Leiber says. “And although my sister and I have a fouryear age gap, we have grown to be close.” With her familial support and positive personality, Leiber can tackle any challenge life throws her way. She is magnetic and fun-loving. As she forges ahead in her career, she’ll continue to bring out the best in those around her.

HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK
building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times
H
aley Domeck is in her third year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle
blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the all-tournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS U.S. News & World Report and Washington Monthly each rate Linfield as the top-rated liberal arts school in Oregon Linfield University is the No. 1 liberal arts college or university in Oregon, according to Washington Monthly’s 2022 College Guide and Rankings. And for the fourth consecutive year, U.S. News & World Report magazine has named Linfield University one of the best liberal arts colleges in the nation when it comes to social mobility. In U.S. News & World Report’s 2023 rankings, Linfield was named the top liberal arts college in Oregon and No. 57 in the nation on the “Top Performers in Social Mobility” list. The social mobility category measures how well universities graduate students who received federal Pell Grants. Students receiving these grants typically come from households whose family incomes are less than $50,000 annually, with most money going to students with total family incomes below $20,000. Of Linfield’s 1,762 undergraduate
students last year, 480 individuals (27%) were Pell Grant eligible. Linfield was also the highest ranked institution in Oregon on the “Campus Ethnic Diversity among National Liberal Arts Colleges” list and was recognized for the second consecutive year among the publication’s list of “Best Undergraduate Nursing Programs.” U.S. News & World Report isn’t the only national publication recognizing Linfield’s commitment to improving the lives of students. Recently, Washington Monthly released its 2022 rankings, naming Linfield the No. 1 liberal arts college in Oregon and among the Best Bang for your Buck in the West. Linfield skyrocketed into the top 100 top liberal arts colleges in the country – coming in at No. 66 – after being ranked 112th in 2021. Washington Monthly ranks four-year schools based on their contribution to the public good in three broad categories: social mobility, research and providing opportunities for public service. The full rankings can be found at washingtonmonthly.com/2022-college-guide.
