charting a future in sports

Trey Bryant isn’t sure yet where his career path will lead him, but he knows for sure it will involve the business of sports

Trey Bryant was born in Norfolk, Nebraska, and raised in Springfield, Oregon. The Linfield University men’s basketball player has created many lifelong memories and friendships through his first two years in McMinnville.

Bryant attributes much of his success to the support of the members of the basketball squad. Specifically, the class of 2025, whom he spends the most time with.

“The basketball team alone has made this college experience fantastic for me,” says the sure-handed 6-foot guard. “They’re not just my teammates; I consider them all great friends whom I’m still developing relationships with. Our class of 2025 on the team is who I’m around the most, and we’ve had amazingly unforgettable moments.

“I’m forever grateful to those guys. Along with the coach ing staff, especially Coach (Shanan) Rosenberg, who has given me a different perspective on the game of basketball along with wise knowledge of life.”

Outside of schooling, Bryant is absorbing and cherishing all the memories with his teammates. Despite the inherent highs and lows that any basketball season brings, Bryant is committed to living his remaining time at Linfield to the fullest.

“Some of my favorite moments are when our team trav eled to Disneyland last year and when we went on our team retreat to the coast in November,” he says. “Even some of the big wins and struggles I and the team had last year were very memorable. The Linfield basketball program itself has made my college experience quite memorable due to its family nature.”

When Bryant isn’t practicing or playing basketball, he is working towards a bachelor’s degree in sport management. Despite not yet knowing his specific career path, growing up in a sports household and always being in a team environment has helped solidify an overarching goal while determining his future.

learn more about business while being in the sports industry.

Whether that’s being a coach, athletic director or event coordinator, I’m pretty open right now. I’m still learning and exploring what I like,” he says. “One thing I know for sure, I would like to stay in the business and sports industry.”

Bryant attributes many of the important life skills he’s learned, such as time management, perseverance and criti cal thinking skills, to the classes he’s taken thus far at Lin field. Although his academic journey hasn’t been a breeze, he remains eager to use his developed skills on the court, in the classroom, in his daily life and to achieve his future goals.

“School isn’t always easy,” he says. “Sometimes, adver sity hits and it makes me learn more about myself as far as how I respond to things. Throughout my academic career, I’ve gained knowledge that has pushed me to work hard to learn and fully understand certain beneficial concepts.

“Those skills don’t stop there. I want to be able to travel the world to see different perspectives of life. I would love to work towards playing pro basketball overseas; I think that would be a great and exciting challenge for me.”

Bryant didn’t just recently learn the importance of work ing hard and persevering. It’s something his family has always stressed to him growing up. Trey was strongly influ enced by his mother, Stacy, his father, Derrick, and his little brother, Landyn, who is currently playing basketball at South Eugene High School. The entire family serves as his greatest role models.

“I am very grateful for my parents,” he says. “They are such great human beings that I look up to along with being great parents as well. I’m proud of them for everything that they do and for them being true to themselves. I am also more than proud to see my little brother develop over time and grow as a person. I’m very proud of him off and on the court and I’m more than thankful to be his brother.

“My family has shaped me to be tough, honest, educated and respectful, and to work hard for the dreams I want to attain. Even though I am my own person, the morals and lessons I’ve learned from my family will forever stick as I continue to find out who I am.”

It is clear Trey Bryant is making the most of his time at Linfield University. Without the support of teammates, coaches, friends, family and Linfield staff, his Linfield

MEN’S COACH SHANAN ROSENBERG

Shanan Rosenberg is in his 10th year as Linfield men’s basketball coach. Since taking over leadership of the program, Rosenberg has guided Linfield through a “worst-to-first” transformation, capping it in 2019-20 with a share of program’s first Northwest Conference title since 2001. Linfield followed with a second co-championship in 2021-22. Under Rosenberg’s direction, the Wildcats have reached the NWC Tournament in four consecutive seasons, ending a seven-year playoff drought.

In nine seasons as head coach, hIs career record at Linfield stands at 116-99 overall and 74-64 in NWC play.

Rosenberg has twice been named North west Conference Coach of the Year. His first league honor came in 2017 after guiding the program to its first winning season since 2008 and first conference playoff berth in five seasons. The most recent NWC accolade came in 2020. That season, the Wildcats went 20-6 and were

crowned conference co-champion during a run that included victories over nationally ranked Whitman and Whitworth on consecutive nights. Over a six-season span after taking over the program, the Wildcats elevated their conference record from 2-14 to 14-2.

Rosenberg was previously head men’s basketball coach for 11 years at Foothill College, a two-year college near Palo Alto in the south San Francisco Bay region. At Foothill, he compiled a 186-131 win-loss record. His 2012-13 team went 22-5, achieving the best regular-season finish in program history.

A native of central California, Rosenberg starred in basketball at St. Francis High School in Mountain View, leading the Lancers to a Central Coast Section championship in 1988. As a student-athlete and three-year letterman at UC-Davis, he earned all-North Coast Athletic Conference honors while leading the Aggies in rebounding his final two seasons.
