WILDCAT SPOTLIGHT

ONE CALL DOES IT ALL When you want someone who will get the job done, a quick call to Megan Pallas is all that’s needed by RILEY OMONAKA ’24

L

infield University’s Megan Pallas does it all. She can either be found defending on the volleyball court, intimidating the competition at the javelin pit, or conquering a debate in her political science classes. Pallas is a force to be reckoned with both on and off the court. Born and raised in Chehalis, Washington, Pallas was a three-sport athlete. She participated in volleyball in the fall, basketball in the winter, and track in the spring. Because Megan loves to stay busy and is not one to enjoy down time, it only made sense to have a sport for every season. When she eventually decided to end her basketball career and focus on volleyball and track, she knew she was making the right decision for entering college. “I stopped playing basketball in high school because it often overlapped between volleyball and track,” she says, looking back. “I knew I wanted to focus on those sports in college.” A dual-sport athlete at Linfield, Pallas loves how the experience of transitioning from a team sport to an individual sport makes for quite a different dynamic. “I love being part of two very different teams and the fact that my season never ends,” explains Pallas. “With volleyball season being in the fall and track season in the winter and spring, I can always stay busy and stay in shape. I’m so grateful to have such a strong community between both teams.” Off the court, Pallas is known on campus as somebody who is always present and in the moment. Whether that’s for her teammates, her sorority sisters, or for any event needing assistance, Pallas is there. If she is involved, you can trust everything will get done in an organized manner. She is intimidating yet has a big heart. Pallas knows how to get work done. “Megan is one of the hardest-working individuals you will ever meet. She puts the team above herself no matter what,” says roommate and track teammate Kenzie Feinglas. “Megan looks on the bright side of everything and has a tremendous positive impact in the team dynamic.” 4

When you need someone who will give her best effort in everything she does, Pallas is your person. She is a member of the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority on campus, where she oversees planning of special events, an area in which she excels. When Pallas organizes an event, every detail is accounted for and always goes according to plan. Pallas knows how to keep her team on their toes and can motivate people to try their best. “If I could describe Megan in one word, it’s selfless,” Feinglas says. Always showing up for her teammates happens to be Pallas’s specialty. “Megan is always eager and always prepared to step in when needed,” volleyball teammate Mia Naccarato says. “She contributes a good work ethic, which is important on our team. It shows the underclassmen how to keep working hard, no matter what.” On both teams, Pallas is known for taking the freshmen under her wing and showing them ways to make Linfield feel like home. Pallas always makes sure everybody is accounted for. If a teammate needs a ride to Target or the grocery store, Pallas is there for them. According to sophomore thrower Ashlyn Ramsey, “Megan has the pre-meet pep talk down to a science.” Ramsey notes how Pallas is extremely talented in lifting up her teammates and affirming that what they are going to do will turn out great. “I need to give credit to Megan for some of my PR in javelin. The words of encouragement she said to me before really helped my mental game,” says Ramsey. Pallas has an amazing quality that is easily observed. When she enters a room, she attracts the attention of everybody and knows how to get people to listen. Pallas has been a strong leader since arriving at Linfield. She does not get intimidated but instead, does the intimidating, yet in an inspiring way. After graduation, Pallas hopes to attend law school and become an attorney. As a political science major at Linfield, Pallas’s political views are no secret. She is a stickler for making sure what everybody is saying is inclusive. Her goal as a prospective attorney is to advocate for social justice and make a difference in the world. With such a strong and unwavering demeanor, Pallas already has mastered the challenging part of becoming an attorney. With one more volleyball season left to play, she stands ready to attack and give it all she has.

HEAD COACH HALEY DOMECK

building the foundation Inheriting a program that was experiencing a low point in its history, Haley Domeck has the ’Cats heading for better times

H

aley Domeck is in her second year as Linfield head volleyball coach. In 2020, she became the first woman to direct the Wildcats volleyball program since Robin Vealey coached the team to a 30-7 record and the Northwest Conference championship in 1979. Domeck (nee Doerfler) combines a mixture of collegiate and club coaching experience, as well as substantial college and high school playing experience. Before joining the Linfield staff, she spent one year as an assistant coach at Seattle Pacific University and assisted at the University of North Alabama for one year. She also previously coached at Durham University in England, directing that school’s indoor and sand volleyball programs while serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Domeck has six years experience coaching at the club level. Competing as Haley Doerfler, Domeck starred as a middle

blocker at Hawaii Pacific University, graduating in 2015. During her four seasons at HPU, she piled up 394 blocks, leading the team in blocks in three of those seasons. She also recorded 765 career kills, 208 coming as a senior in 2014. As a junior, Domeck totaled 117 blocks and hit .309, earning all-Pacific West Conference third team honors. She was honorable mention all-Pacific West as a sophomore and again as a senior. Born in Waterloo, Iowa, Domeck’s family settled in the southwest Washington city of Battle Ground. At Prairie High School, she was an all-state honoree and the Greater St. Helens League Most Valuable Player. She excelled at the club level, winning the JO National Championship in the American Division while being named to the alltournament team. Haley and her husband, Wes, reside in McMinnville.

LINFIELD’S PARALYMPIAN Annie Flood recently competed at the highest echelon of sport at the Tokyo Paralympic Games Annie Flood was prepared to move forward, having accepted this was not her year to make Team USA’s sitting volleyball Paralympic roster. The Linfield University freshman recently returned from Japan where she and her Team USA teammates captured the gold medal at the Tokyo Paralympics. Flood, who resides in Salem, helped Team USA defend its Paralympic title with a thrilling 4-set match over archrival China. In preparation for the Tokyo Paralympics, Flood went all in. The granddaughter of former Linfield football athlete Bob Flood moved from Salem to Team USA’s headquarters in Oklahoma to earn a spot with the Tokyo team. “I went and I trained and I gave it everything I have,” Flood said. “And then I came home and didn’t make the roster and it was frustrating and I was angry because I gave everything I have and was that just not enough or did I do something wrong?”

And then she got the call. “I had not only just, sort of, be OK with the fact that I didn’t make the roster and start to just be like, ‘Oh, my team’s going I get to cheer for them stateside,’ but I’d also just moved into college,” she said. “And then I got the call and everything sort of clicked. It was like, OK, this is where I’m supposed to be.” Flood said she started crying. “I get off the phone — ‘Thank you so much!’ — and I just start sobbing, like sobbing and I screamed, and I was like, ‘I’m going to Tokyo!’ and my dad was like, ‘Oh my gosh!’ and my mom was like ‘What’s going on?’ It was a scene but it was, like, just pure joy.” Born with fibibular hemimela, the Salem native has lived nearly her entire life with a prosthetic on her right leg. But growing up the Paralympics were the last thing on her mind. “I mean I always wanted to just be like every other kid, I didn’t want to be different, I didn’t want to be in the Paralympics, I didn’t even know what that was,” she said.

LINFIELD IN THE NEWS University adding men’s and women’s wrestling to the stable of sports offerings, marking the first additions in 25 years Linfield University on October 4 announced the addition of men’s and women’s wrestling teams, which will begin competition in the fall of 2022. The university will hire a coach for the programs right away, and begin recruiting for next year. Men’s and women’s wrestling will become the 22nd and 23rd NCAA Division III sports at Linfield, which has a strong tradition of student athletics. “This is a big moment in Linfield’s history, and in the history of Wildcat athletics,” Athletic Director Garry Killgore said. “It represents our first new varsity programs in almost 25 years, which is not a step we took lightly. Women’s wrestling is one of the fastest-growing sports in America, and we’re excited to offer new opportunities for those athletes.” The last time the university added varsity sports was in 1996 with women’s golf and 1997 with women’s lacrosse. Linfield had a men’s wrestling team until 1986, which competed at the NAIA level at the time. “Linfield right now is growing from a college into a university, opening a second campus, building a new $37 million science center and adding graduate programs, among other things,”

said Miles K. Davis, Linfield president. “The addition of men’s and women’s wrestling fits right in with that growth trajectory. I look forward to sitting matside in Ted Wilson Gymnasium and cheering for Wildcat wrestlers in the years ahead.” The group Restore College Wrestling Oregon has been meeting with Linfield’s athletic department for three years, discussing plans, offering help and exploring opportunities together. Larry Bielenberg, a four-time NCAA All-American and the 1975 heavyweight national champion for Oregon State, has been a primary point of contact for RCWOR through that time. “We are thrilled that Linfield is restarting its men’s program and initiating a new women’s program,” said Bielenberg, whose daughter graduated from Linfield in 2006. “It’s been a pleasure for Restore College Wrestling Oregon to work with Garry Kilgore and we appreciate the decision from President Davis to make it happen. This will be the fifth program RCWOR has helped start in the state of Oregon, which in turn helps train and educate a new generation of teachers, coaches and professionals. We’re happy to be a part of it.”
