Linenhall Arts Centre Autumn/Winter 2013 Brochure

Page 1

Hello There You are very welcome to the Linenhall. As you can see from our programme, we are just bursting at the seams with wonderful things for you to see and do over the coming months and we are very much hoping that you will join us for at least some of them. I am personally looking forward to the Niamh O’Malley exhibition scheduled in all five publicly-funded visual arts spaces in Mayo. It’s on for the month of September and provides the perfect excuse for a trip around the county. We also have some brilliant theatre including two plays directed by Andrew Flynn, recently shortlisted for the Irish Times Best Director award. But that’s just a tiny part of what’s on offer. There’s traditional music, classical music, folk music, contemporary music, performed by such superstars as Chatham Saxophone Quartet, Jerry Fish and the Mudbug Club, Ger Wolfe, Nikolay Khozyainov, Johnny Duhan, Noel Hill, but not all on the same night now, you understand. Our Film Club is a great way to spend a rainy Tuesday night, for a mere €5 you get to see the finest films from all over the world. We also screen the Metropolitan Opera live from New York and it really is spectacular. The best seat in the house is reserved for you and there are some crackers this season, including Puccini’s Tosca and Eugene Onegin by Tchaikovsky. If this is the first time you’ve received our brochure then I need to alert you to its hidden treasures. All workshops on offer are located towards the back of the document and be warned, the workshops fill up very quickly so early booking is advisable. We’ve also introduced a centre-page pull-out with all our listings, so give it pride of place on our fridge. Finally, you probably thought we were gliding this summer, but like swans we were paddling furiously to bring you a brand new website, complete with on-line booking. We’ve also changed our box-office booking system and we hope the data transfer has been impeccable, but if you got our brochure when you asked us not to send it, or you didn’t get one when you should have, please forgive us. Contact us and we will make it right. We look forward to having you with us. Warmest Regards

Marie Farrell PS. Did I mention RoolaBoola? PPS. If this is the first time you’ve received our brochure and would like to get it regularly, please call us and we will put you on our Mailing List.

THEATRE Monday 4th - Tuesday 5th November @ 8.00pm Nomad/Decadent Theatre Co - The Cavalcaders

Billy Roche’s rousing comic play explores the lives and loves of a community of characters in small-town Ireland. Set in an old-fashioned cobbler’s shop, this is the story of four shoemakers who make the mundane marvellous as they transform themselves nightly into The Cavalcaders, a singing quartet that prides itself on harmony, comic patter and romantic sentiment. The play blends music and comedy with a brutally honest depiction of emotional warfare and personal betrayal as we witness the group, and particularly its leader Terry, disintegrate before our very eyes. For, hidden behind the harmony, discord lurks in the shadowy corners of their lives. Exploring the complexities of human relationships, The Cavalcaders is a wonderful memory play with live music and a beautiful musical score that is both moving and entertaining, written by renowned Irish playwright Billy Roche, author of The Wexford Trilogy. “A play filled with sparkling dialogue and lively incidents.” - Michael Billington, The Guardian Adm. €18 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 12th November @ 8.00pm In The House (Dans La Maison)

France 2012 105mins French with English subtitles Claude, a sixteen-year-old pupil at a secondary school, writes a homework essay about a fellow student, the attractive, sports-loving Rapha and his seemingly perfect middle-class life with adoring parents - so unlike Claude’s own broken family - for disillusioned French teacher Germain. Struck by the combination of affection and satire in the writing of this clearly gifted but unusual pupil, and also by a voyeuristic frisson ignited by Claude’s evident infatuation with Rapha’s mother, Germain encourages Claude to insinuate himself further into the seemingly bourgeois idyll, but the boy’s intrusions unleash a series of unexpected events. This teasing dark comedy is the latest film by top director François Ozon (Potiche, Swimming Pool), with top-notch performances by Fabrice Luchini, Kristin Scott Thomas and young newcomer Ernst Umhauer. “Ozon’s clever psychological comedy about teaching and erotic obsession is his best work to date.” - Philip French, The Guardian “Darkly funny and utterly compelling.” - Alonso Duralde, The Wrap “A celebration of storytelling’s power.” - Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal Adm: €5

LOCAL ARTS: THEATRE Wed 13th & Thu14th November @ 8.00pm theatreWorksWest - Achill

“Is that how you plan to rule this place, with a bridge as the gallows?” Renowned poet Sean Lysaght sets his scene on Mayo’s once remote Achill Island, in the very first staging of his play. Lysaght casts his poetic eye on times when a litany of powerful “intruders” forced their hand to reign in the independent spirit of the islanders. How? By connecting them to the mainland with bridges. Refusing to surrender to the occupier, the islanders sabotage a succession of bridges built by the intruders, triggering calamities which are mirrored in the vigorous but fierce clash of the sea against the land, and in the human relationships that are trapped and gutted in the ongoing power struggle. Achill, Hanna and her husband Lermon are torn in a harrowing triangle: the pull of suppressed passion, the ties of conventional loyalty and a yearning for peace all warring within them - as the external struggle continues to take its toll. Can there be a just settlement? How much loss is too much? What is the price of peace? Presented by Mayo theatre company theatreWorksWest (The Cherry Orchard), directed by Trisha Kuester. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 26th November @ 8.00pm The Hunt (Jagten)

Denmark 2012 111mins Danish with English subtitles Lucas is a school teacher forced to start over having overcome a tough divorce and the loss of his job due to a school closure, and now working as a kindergarten assistant. Recently divorced, he has many good friends in an idyllic close-knit rural community, and is a cheerful participant in all the local traditions, chiefly an annual deer hunt. But things go horribly wrong for Lucas when a false accusation of sexual abuse is made against him by a child, and the situation escalates out of control. As the lie spreads, Lucas is forced to fight a lonely fight for his life and dignity. A riveting film by director Thomas Vinterberg (Festen) starring Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale), who won the Best Actor Award for his penetrating portrayal at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. “Lean, fast-paced storytelling... Mikkelsen is gripping. A knotty, frighteningly real drama.” - Cath Clarke, Time Out London “Forthright, powerful, composed and directed with clarity and overwhelming force, yet capable of great subtlety and nuance.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian Adm. €5

CLASSICAL MUSIC Wednesday 27th November @ 8.00pm Nikolay Khozyainov (Russia)

Concert-goers are still talking about the spellbinding technique and supreme artistry displayed by Nikolay Khozyainov while winning last year’s Dublin International Piano Competition. Now here’s a chance to hear this young lion of the keyboard in full flow, as part of a nationwide Music Network tour. Hailing from Blagoveshchensk, in Eastern Russian, the 21-year old is one of the most remarkable pianists of his generation. Winner of numerous awards, Khozyainov has already made his recital debut at Carnegie Hall, appeared in concert with the Tokyo Symphony, Warsaw Philharmonic and Sydney Symphony Orchestras while touring Europe, Asia and the USA. Prepare to be swept away! Programme: Joseph Haydn - Sonata in B minor; Frédéric Chopin 12 Etudes op.10; Sergei Rachmaninov - Sonata no.1 in D Minor op. 28; Martin O’Leary Blue Toccata; Franz Liszt Mephisto Waltz no. 1. “Khozyainov proved himself master of the keyboard with playing that not only reached the heart of the score but also overcame its technical hurdles in a glittering display of virtuosity.” - The Irish Independent Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

CONTEMPORARY MUSIC Thursday 5th December @ 8.00pm Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club

With a sound that has been described as “a mix of lounge lizard schmooze and mariachi passion” and “punk latino”, Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club is an eclectic, roots collective of musicians, friends and songs “inspired in part by a musical circus troupe from Barcelona, the movie soundtracks of Quentin Tarantino and the music of New York artists Lou Reed and Willy DeVille”, and renowned for its charisma, wit and sheer musicality. The band’s acclaimed multi-platinum-selling debut album Be Yourself was released in 2002, spawning a top ten hit with the song True Friends, and the Mudbugs have been firm favourites with music lovers (and fun lovers!) ever since. Jerry (the alter ego of musician and record producer Gerard Whelan) is a self-styled “carny soul, a shape-shifter, showman, shaman, producer, songwriter, performer, entrepreneur and supper club crooner”, and the average (if you can use such a term) Fish show dissolves all boundaries between performer and punter, so expect a night of great music and much, much more! Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 10th December @ 8.00pm I’m So Excited (Los amantes pasajeros)

Spain 2013 90mins Spanish with English subtitles Putting the ‘high’ in hysterical, Pedro Almodóvar revisits the camp glitz of his early movies in this engaging, energetic aircraft-in-distress farce that also offers a good helping of satire about the times he, and we, live in. Take a crew of gay attendants and stressy passengers, put them on a crippled plane with no airport able to offer runway space for an emergency landing, and you have what Almodóvar himself describes as “my gayest film ever” as the stewards try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves body and soul to the task of making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers, while they wait for a solution. “Buoyant and bawdy… the fun is infectious, and the humor so superbly barbed. The mix of the absurd and the acerbic is often sublime.” - Keith Uhlich, Time Out New York “This new comedy makes it clear that Almodóvar remains one of the wildest, raunchiest and most hilarious directors of our generation.” - Alonso Duralde, The Wrap Adm. €5

VISUAL ART Saturday 31st August - Sunday 29th September Niamh O’Malley

For the first time the five publicly funded visual arts spaces in Mayo have combined their resources and facilities to present the exciting video and sculptural work of Niamh O’Malley. This collaboration offers the opportunity to experience the art of one of the most thoughtful artists working in Ireland today. The show comprises: Aras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet: Quarry, 2011 (Video Projection) Ballina Arts Centre: Bridge, 2009 ; Flag, 2008 (Video Projections) Ballinglen Arts Foundation, Ballycastle: New Drawings Customs House, Westport: Window, 2013; Screen, 2011 (Sculptures) Linenhall Arts Centre, Castlebar: Island, 2010 (Video Projection) The curator of this major show, Patrick T. Murphy, Director of the Royal Hibernian Academy, outlines Niamh’s work: “Niamh O’ Malley creates single channel videos full of depth and penetration. Her images are engaging and direct. Whether an island or quarry, a bridge or a flag, her videos confine our attention to the image, demanding of us a response to the timelessness of nature and the transitory quality of the manmade. Played in black and white, gently paced and without sound, O’Malley’s videos create a shared space between viewed and viewer. Their quiet attentiveness to this relationship reveals to us the sophisticated dynamics of perception. Her sculptures incorporating as they do glass and mirror also examine this interdependence as much as they propose their own internal sense of beauty.” Niamh O’Malley is based in Dublin. Her work has been seen recently in solo exhibitions in Norway, Italy, Spain and France and throughout Ireland in various venues and festivals. She is represented in the collections of the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Hugh Lane, Dublin City Gallery. Adm. free (NB. For this show, as well as normal hours, all galleries will also be open on Sunday 15th September from 2.00pm-5.00pm.) VISUAL ART Friday 4th October - Saturday 9th November

Lucy Hill - paint

Artist Lucy Hill has created something really exciting and different for our annual exhibition for young audiences. paint is an interactive, participatory, multimedia, multi-sensory exhibition of abstract painting. In short, an exhibition you can play with! With an array of opportunities to interact with the works, through looking, smelling, listening, drawing and playing with materials, this will be an exhibition you and your children will want to return to. Reflecting the shifting focus in education towards ‘process’ as much as ‘product’, this exhibition exposes the artist’s working methods alongside her paintings. This is not a didactic ‘how to paint’ exercise, rather it aims to tackle the myth that a real piece of art is a form of perfection that appears by magic, and is made by especially gifted creatures. On the contrary, art making is connected to earthy and utterly human states and questions including messiness, pleasure, fun, persistence, procrastination, time, despair, frustration, joy, curiosity and obsession. The exhibition also aims to draw attention to the phenomenon of ‘flow’ (Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi 1990), observing how readily children slip into deep involvement when they are fully engaged with creative materials, and how an artist’s most satisfying work happens while in that same state of flow, how precious that state is and how delicate and difficult it can be to orchestrate. Come and explore! Adm. free Official opening on Friday 4th October at 7.30pm. All welcome. (See Workshop pages for exciting paint-lab opportunities for children!) Supported by Mayo County Development Board and Inspiration Station.
