Hi there, Orla here, I’m the Arts Access Officer at the Linenhall and the core of my work involves organising our workshops & children’s events. I’ve been here for 11 happy years, but I do most of my beavering hidden away in the attic office, so I may not be familiar to some of you. It’s my turn this season to introduce our upcoming programme of fantastic events. I’ve had great fun putting together this year’s RoolaBoola Children’s Arts Festival. It’s the familiar mix of top class theatre shows, workshops, exhibitions, and film. Cahoots NI and Paul Curley are bringing two shows for audiences 4 years and up - it’s always a joy seeing little ones’ reactions. Branar Téatar are returning with Bláth - we loved it so much last time around we want to make sure everyone gets a chance to see it. We’ve our first ever show for schools from The Abbey, and we’re thrilled to be working with twice Oscarnominated Cartoon Saloon to present film screenings, workshops and a fabulous exhibition which shines a light on the creation of their film Song of the Sea. We can’t wait! Children’s events at the Linenhall don’t stop with RoolaBoola. We continue with our Visual Art Programme for Schools (by year end we’ll have had 3300 student visits for 2015) as well as our Theatre for Schools Programme, and we’ve a great Pop-Up Christmas Card Workshop coming up with the wonderful Maeve Clancy. The brochure is bursting with loads of other brilliant events for the not so young – take some time to browse it at your leisure. Music is close to my heart and some of the gigs I won’t be missing this season include Chris Wood (he blew me away last time he was here), the Vanbrugh String Quartet (they bring back great memories of my time as a music student) and GoGo Penguin (I haven’t heard them, but we’re getting lots of great reports). We’re also hosting a sound effects workshop in conjunction with Moonfish’s theatre adaptation of Joseph O’Connor’s Star of the Sea. They make all of the sound track live on stage and it’s a chance to gain some insight into how it’s done. The Linenhall has been part of the fabric of Castlebar for 25 years. As we come to the end of our 25th year we feel really privileged to have shared the work of some amazing artists – from musicians and actors, to dancers and visual artists, and everything in between - with you, our community. Thanks for being with us, taking part, attending events, and helping out. We look forward to continuing the journey with you this Autumn, and for many more years to come.

PS: Don’t miss our 25th Birthday Party on Culture Night , Friday18th September – we hope you’ll get your glad rags on and come join us for the celebrations!

TRAD/FOLK/CONTEMPORARY Tuesday 1st September @ 8.00pm

The Alan Kelly Gang with Eddi Reader & John Douglas

Returning after last year’s sell out show, the critically acclaimed Irish Traditional band, Alan Kelly Gang reunites with Scotland’s mesmerizing songstress, Eddi Reader (ex Fairground Attraction) and Trashcan Sinatra’s guitarist and songwriter, John Douglas, performing all new material from their latest album The Last Bell. Sheer musical synergy in its most natural form, once a collaboration, now a band, their performances have been praised for leaving audiences spellbound. Fronted by Ireland’s piano accordion maestro, AKG (with Steph Geremia - flute/vocal; Alasdair White fiddle; Ian Carr - guitar/vocal) sits firmly at the cutting edge of the Traditional and World music scene, full of passion, driving rhythms and buoyant harmonies. From Traditional to Contemporary, Eddi Reader brings joyous life to all forms of song. Perhaps best known from the Fairground Attraction days of chart-topping single Perfect and its album First of a Million Kisses, Eddi has effortlessly developed into one of popular music’s most thrilling and affecting performers. A musical match made in heaven. “An astonishing concert.” - The Living Tradition magazine Adm. €20

THEATRE Thursday 3rd September @ 8.00pm

Declan Gorman - The Dubliners Dilemma

James Joyce is regarded worldwide as one of the greatest and most recognised literary figures of the 20th century. So how did this unknown Irishman emerge from the obscurity of his native city to achieve international renown? It might never have happened, had it not been for an Englishman with a troubled conscience. Declan Gorman’s solo show is more than simply a stage adaptation of a book of stories. Set in 1914, it opens with London publisher Grant Richards, determined to re-read Joyce’s manuscript eight years after first rejecting it fearing it might breach obscenity laws. As the streets of Dublin and the racy, comic tales of Joyce’s childhood and young adult world spring to vivid life around him, Richards relives his frustrating correspondence with the petulant Irish writer. Should he be the one to risk everything now, second time around, and launch this volatile but brilliant genius on a world about to descend into the madness of war? “Truly mesmerising... by no means exclusively for die-hard Joyce fans, a brilliant introduction for newcomers!” - Metro Herald “Very entertaining.” - Mail on Sunday “Compelling… animated and intelligent.” - Irish Theatre Magazine Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

With panicked diners fleeing in all directions, Ebba calls out for her husband as she tries to protect their children. Tomas, however, makes a decision that will shake the family’s world to its core. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 22nd September @ 8.00pm Wild Tales (Relatos salvajes)

Argentina 2014 122 mins Language: Spanish with English subtitles For sheer entertainment value, you’ll be hard-pressed to beat this outrageous, aptly named anthology film. Damián Szifrón gives us half a dozen stories for the price of one. Each tale strips away at the veneer of civilized society to reveal something more primal and animalistic underneath: [a] macabre yarn about the waitress in an empty late-night diner; then there’s the bride who discovers her husband has been unfaithful and exacts her revenge; the best (or worst) road rage episode you’ll ever see; [a man] taking on Buenos Aires’ municipal parking enforcers, and oh, that incident on the plane! It’s at least a week’s worth of water-cooler conversation in one big fix. - Vancouver International Film Festival “Delicious, horrible, scary and scabrous… genuinely funny and genuinely scary at the same time.” - The Guardian “A splendidly anarchic portrait of a world on the verge of a nervous breakdown.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer “Well-acted, cleverly written and exquisitely crafted.” - Claudia Puig, USA Today “Terrific.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian Adm. €5

THEATRE Thursday 1st October @ 8.00pm

Moonfish Theatre & An Taibhdhearc- Star of the Sea

In the winter of 1847 the famine ship Star of the Sea sets sail for the Promised Land. Among the passengers are a maidservant, a ruined lord, and a ruthless murderer. Moving between the wild landscape of Connemara, grimy London streets, and the claustrophobic confines of the famine ship, this sweeping production charts the lives of the three characters, from the childhoods that shaped them to their final, fateful journey. Told through Moonfish’s signature style of bi-lingual theatre, the journey comes to life as six performers use projection, physicality, live sound effects and music to conjure the worlds of the characters on a bare stage. Based on the best-selling novel by Joseph O’Connor, and a sell-out hit at the Galway International Arts Festival 2014, this new piece of Irish theatre is unmissable. (NB. Star of the Sea is accessible to non-Irish speakers.) (See also Telling Stories Through Sound workshop on p24) “A lesson in theatre magic ... captures an extraordinary and devastating story.” - Irish Daily Mail Adm: €18 / €16 (conc) / €14 (Book Club) €25 workshop & show deal (p24)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 6th October @ 8.00pm Timbuktu

France, Mauritania 2014 97mins Arabic, French with English subtitles Not far from the ancient Malian city of Timbuktu, now ruled by the religious fundamentalists, proud cattle herder Kidane lives peacefully in the dunes with his wife Satima, his daughter Toya, and Issan, their twelve-year-old shepherd. In town, the people suffer, powerless, from the regime of terror imposed by the Jihadists determined to control their faith. Music, laughter, cigarettes, even soccer have been banned. The women have become shadows but resist with dignity. Every day, the new improvised courts issue tragic and absurd sentences. Kidane and his family are being spared the chaos that prevails in Timbuktu. But their destiny changes abruptly in this stunningly rendered film from a master of world cinema. (C) CohenMedia “Sissako’s passionate and visually beautiful film is a cry from the heart - with all the more moral authority for being expressed with such grace and such care.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “A privilege to watch.” - Ann Hornaday, Washington Post “This stunningly shot and deeply empathetic drama. Raised by a passionate mother and several idiosyncratic aunts, Michael’s unconventional living situation gives him a unique curiosity for life. Me, Michael explores the magic and the intelligence of an imaginative child growing up without a father in 1930s Donegal. By sharing his family story, Michael finds a new strength in dealing with prejudice. An energetic and charming monologue full of music and dance, Me, Michael re-frames Brian Friel’s Dancing at Lughnasa with all the exuberance and insight of the original.

JAZZ Thursday 29th October @ 8.00pm GoGo Penguin

Packing the dance floors with an infectious combination of frenetic break-beats, irresistible piano melodies and subtle electronica, GoGo Penguin first came to prominence after their album v2.0 was named a Mercury Prize 2014 Album of the Year. Rising stars on the UK Jazz scene, this Mancunian piano trio is equally at home playing to clubbers and dyed-in-the-wool jazz fans, drawing on a range of influences from Aphex Twin and dubstep to The Bad Plus, Brian Eno, John Cage, Massive Attack and Debussy. Their highly personalised, genre-free sound comes from the interplay between the three musicians: Chris Illingworth’s flowing bebop-inspired piano riding over Nick Blacka’s pulsing bass lines and Rob Turner’s skittering drum grooves. With a three album deal with Blue Note Records under their belt, and a recent nomination for best UK act in the Jazz FM Awards, this is a band you wouldn’t want to miss. “Three sure-footed improvisers with deep jazz roots” - The Guardian “A stirring re-evaluation of what a piano trio should sound like in the 21st century.” - Barclaycard Mercury Prize 2014 Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

THEATRE Monday 2nd November @ 8.00pm Sonya Kelly - How to Keep an Alien

Rough Magic presents How to Keep an Alien: a story about falling in love and proving it to the government. Sonya Kelly (The Wheelchair on my Face) is back with a tearfully funny, tender memoir about securing an Irish visa for her Australian partner. They met. They fell in love. Now all they have to do is prove it to the government. Join her madcap odyssey from the stony townlands of Offaly to the leafy depths of the Queensland bush. It’s a tricky business coming from opposite ends of the earth. It takes an Olympian will and the heart of whale, but above all else, paperwork. It takes a hell of a lot of paperwork... Written and performed by Sonya Kelly, and directed by Gina Moxley.  “Exquisite.” - Irish Times “Unflaggingly hilarious…How to Keep an Alien is the funniest, most touching of love stories, its open-heartedness a rarity in this cynical age.” - Sunday Independent “Inventive and delightfully magnetic.” - The Herald Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 3rd November @ 8.00pm Manuscripts Don’t Burn

Iran 2013 125mins Language: Persian with English subtitles This highly charged political thriller draws on real events to tell an unfortunately common tale of repression in contemporary Iran. Kasra, an Iranian author who’s been secretly writing his memoirs, is under strict monitoring by the country’s security service. His stories are related to his time in jail as a political prisoner and to other events connected to his life as an intellectual in Iran. After preparing his writings to be published as a book, Kasra gets ready to leave the country - but the security service apparatus uncovers his plan before he leaves. Next on their agenda: destroy his manuscripts. - (C) Kino Lorber In making this film, director Mohammad Rasoulof defied a twenty-year work ban by the Iranian government, and is facing a year-long prison sentence, a fact that only underscores the importance of films like this one. “A remarkable piece of work.” - Paul Whitington, Irish Independent “Brave and defiant.” - Mark Kermode, The Observer “A crackling, tense thriller, graced with beautifully measured performances.” - Leslie Felperin, The Guardian Adm: €5

LOCAL ARTS: CONTEMPORARY FOLK Thursday 12th November @ 8.00pm John Hoban & Teresa Burke The Girl Who Dives for Pearls

The Girl Who Dives for Pearls is the second collection of original songs by Mayo-based song writer Tom Hughes. These new songs are once again beautifully sung, accompanied, interpreted and brought to life by John Hoban and Teresa Burke with Mary Gallagher and Dee Ryan. “Welcome back to the ocean in the puddle. Hear the sounds return to the source like salmon spawning, like eels going home, the fathomless motion of the deepest urge. Follow the song of the Girl Who Dives for Pearls as she enters the underwater Underworld beneath Puddletown. Coursing through the fissures and fractures of the Earth’s drowning heart, she swims towards the darkness, not seduced by the light’s easy promise, holding her breath….Come and hear the “sea word” sung like a bell to sound the formless depths in the wells beneath the world… she surfaces by the Shrine in Murioka, in Doubtful Sound, on the banks of Good Friday in Borneo, in the secret places of a Starless world where Nobody’s Coming… come hear, come hear....Let your wings touch the deep…… in the Puddles of Puddletown...” New CD available on the night…. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 17th November @ 8.00pm Au Revoir l’Été (Hotori no Sakuko)

Japan 2013 125mins Language: Japanese with English subtitles A Japanese film with a French title, and just as lightfootedly psychological and en-passant intelligent as French films can be. Secondary-school student Sakuko accompanies her aunt Mikie on a holiday to a resort town on the coast far from Tokyo. Besides cycling trips and strolls on the beach, Mikie hopes to use the two-week holiday to complete her research project. In the meantime, Sakuko meets Takashi, a refugee from Fukushima who works in the hotel belonging to Ukichi, a friend of Mikie’s sister. With carefully observed scenes, [director] Koji Fukada not only succeeds in perfectly capturing the mood of a languid holiday, he also manages to subtly sketch the psychology of the different characters. - Rotterdam International Film Festival 2014 “There is a wonderful charm and a sensuous languor in this Japanese movie from Kôji Fukada. Guided by the spirit of Eric Rohmer... What a lovely film.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian “The spirit of Eric Rohmer blows like a head-clearing breeze through every frame... a film that’s an irresistible mix of the fresh and familiar” – Robbie Collin, Daily Telegraph Adm: €5

TRADITIONAL MUSIC Thursday 19th November @ 8.00pm Martin Hayes & Dennis Cahill

Irish fiddle virtuoso Martin Hayes and American guitarist Dennis Cahill possess a rare musical kinship, ranking them among the most memorable partnerships of our era. Together they have garnered international renown for taking traditional music to the very edge of the genre, holding listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances. Martin Hayes is someone who needs little introduction. Dennis Cahill is a master guitarist, whose innovative accompaniment is acknowledged as being a major breakthrough for guitar in the Irish tradition. Together they create a musical alchemy that is truly magical. “If you were limited to a single concert in the entire year, then you’d be either crazy or foolish if you didn’t pass that precious time in the company of Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill.” - The Irish Times “Sparsely accompanied fiddle music has rarely sounded so complete and so essential.” - Q Magazine Adm. €20 / €18 (concessions)

FOLK MUSIC Thursday 26th November @ 8.00pm Chris Wood

For this event which takes place on International Day of Persons with Disabilities, Paul has worked with Irish Sign Language interpreter Mairéad Hegarty to develop Irish Sign Language interpretations of selected poems from his most recent collection The Days of Surprise. “Durcan is a charismatic performer whose voice haunts the printed pages of his books.” - Fran Brearton, The Guardian “Ireland’s most playful poet.” - The Irish Times “Durcan is the poet of many moods, carefully calibrated or appearing to run wild - off the leash - into manic comedy that will have you snorting up your sleeve.” - Paddy Kehoe, RTE Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions) / €10 (ISL users) UPSTART is an initiative of Mayo County Council Arts Office and this event acknowledges the support received under this scheme this year.

THEATRE Thursday 10th December @ 8.00pm

Seamus O’Rourke - Victor’s Dung (The Whole Story) Victor’s Dung is the comic tale of Victor Maguire, a crude, vulgar, un-PC Cavan farmer who gets a surprise one Friday morning with the news that he hasn’t long to live. His existence and the existence of a God are brought into question as Victor cartwheels into memory, fantasy, poetry, despair and eventually love… love for his deceased wife Josie, his dog, his rooster, his good friend Fr. Johnny, his eccentric neighbours, but most of all his rural life. Actor and author of the play Seamus O’Rourke once again takes on the role of Victor on his own little farm with its own little dung heap and a variety of animals and characters portrayed by two very special actors, Tommy Sharkey and Charles McGuinness. Originally a one-man play with over 130 performances, rave reviews and standing ovations, Victor’s Dung has now been developed and redesigned into a full theatrical production. Hold on to your hats… and your sweets (because there may be Cavan people in the audience)… this could get messy. “O’Rourke is a natural storyteller.” – The Edinburgh Fringe Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 15th December @ 8.00pm

The New Girlfriend (Une nouvelle amie)

France 2014 107mins Language: French with English subtitles Claire (Anaïs Demoustier), devastated by the death of her best friend, makes a promise to watch over her husband (Romain Duris) and newborn child. Battling through a fog of depression and a lack of responsiveness from her own husband, she reluctantly drags herself to the plush suburban home of her friend’s widower only to make a startling discovery about the form his grief has taken. At first shocked and resistant, then progressively seduced, she ultimately finds expression for her own crippling anguish and repressed desires. Demoustier and Duris give superb performances, perfectly attuned to the film’s pointed observations about gender, class and consumerism while conspiring with Ozon to paint a thick layer of normalcy over the disruptive, deliciously subversive story... gloriously conceived, sublimely realised. - Clare Stewart, BFI London Film Festival 2014 “Smart, insightful comedy... Duris, a performance of such loveliness it might just make your heart burst.” - Cath Clarke, Time Out “Delectably entertaining.” - Jusin Chang, Variety Adm: €5

Conor O’Grady - Green Carnations

“If you are not like everybody else, then you are Abnormal, if you are Abnormal, then you are Sick… These three categories: not being like everybody else, not being normal and being sick are in fact very different but have been reduced to the same thing.” - Michel Foucault Green Carnations is the inaugural solo exhibition of Visual Artist Conor O’ Grady. The exhibition is the culmination of an ongoing practice which references several aspects of societal, cultural and artistic modes of consumption. The exhibition uses traditional art approaches to re-present the contemporaneous experiences of Irish gay people, focusing particularly on those most at risk of experiencing societal, political and emotional oppression. Green Carnations reflects consistent signifiers of our shared histories; images of isolation, alienation and otherness that are evoked in traditional Irish culture, and substitutes them for experiences that characterise the palpable sense of trauma and societal estrangement expressed throughout entire generations of Irish gay people.
