Hi there, Ian here, it’s my turn to greet, meet and welcome you to our latest Linenhall programme. While you may not see as much of me as the other staff (they keep me up in the attic - but it’s not as bad as it sounds, honest!), you’ll almost certainly have read some of the fruits of my labour. I’m the PR person here, and it falls to me to get the word out there to all you good people who, ultimately, are the reason for the Linenhall’s existence. Additionally, I’m also responsible for in-house design and layout, one of the results of which is the publication you have before you right now. So, having spent the last while writing, editing and putting this issue together before it headed off for printing, I feel reasonably qualified to give you a taster of some of the great things that are coming up at the Linenhall from now until January (- is it me or was that a really quick year?). American folksters Anna & Elizabeth will not only beguile you with their eloquent musical charms, but they’ll also introduce you to the art of storytelling with ‘crankies’. Intrigued? Check them out. Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill will be weaving their special magic, Alan Kelly and Eddi Reader are back for a joyful night of Folk’n’Trad, Furnace Mountain brings us another blast of their intoxicating bluegrass Americana and, not forgetting our own, Castlebar troubadour John Hoban launches his new double CD. National tour organiser Music Network continues to deliver top class musical treats and international stars to our doorstep. In the coming season we have electrifying Classical piano and a stunning harp/clarinet duo, Hot Club of Cowtown (love that name!) and a Traditional music/dance treat from the top drawer. Theatre treats include Danger Money, Seamus O’Rourke’s latest one-man play of heartache and humour, Mayo’s own theatreWorksWest with Edward Albee’s The Zoo Story, and Bryan Burroughs’ five-star barnstormer Beowulf: the Blockbuster. There’s also theatre for younger audiences in the shape of Conor: At the End of the Universe and Monkeyshine’s epic Voyage. Those last two are both being brought to you as part of this year’s RoolaBoola, our annual children’s arts festival over the October Bank holiday. We’ve highlights of the festival in the main brochure, but be sure and check the dedicated RoolaBoola programme to get all the workshops, exhibitions and other events that will be taking place over one of our favourite weekends of the year. We’ve a range of literary events too. As well as spending an evening in the company of Michael Harding, you can settle into a fascinating night of dialogue and readings between author Donal Ryan and poet Martin Dyar, and we’re delighted to be hosting some of Castlebar’s latest literary festival, Wild Atlantic Words. And for something truly different, check out BLUES, a live multimedia performance where music and painting fuse in an original creative collaboration and a work of art is created by artist Fabrizio Simeoni and musician Derek McGowan. Oh, and finally, as part of our current visual arts programme in the Linenhall Foyer I’m delighted to be presenting The Cabinet of Wonders, an ongoing installation project that I’m curating with work by selected contemporary artists. Castlebar singer/songwriter/author John Hoban launches his new CD, his visionary and unique fifth solo album. An Tobar - The Well is a double album: the first CD consists of original, covers and traditional songs accompanied by 12 string guitar and mandocello; the second CD is traditional, original, instrumental fiddle music accompanied by mandocello, banjo and mandolin. The recording captures the quality and energy of a live performance. Big Guerilla Productions - Danger Money Actor/director Seamus O’Rourke is back. For his latest oneman play he teams up with Cavan writer John McManus for a beautiful close-up of rural Irish life full of heartache and humour. London was only ever meant to be a stepping stone for Teddy ‘The Mucker’ Tucker but somehow he stayed there for over thirty years until one day he abruptly abandons his friends and his job and returns home to North Leitrim. Now he must come to terms with his bewildering new-found situation. Fabrizio Simeoni, Derek McGowan & Michael Gannon - BLUES BLUES is a multimedia art project collaboration: a live art performance with artist Fabrizio Simeoni and musician Derek McGowan on stage, accompanied by a video projection by photographer Michael Gannon. Over the course of the performance, Fabrizio Simeoni will realise a new painting with original music from Derek McGowan’s solo album Rainlight, which was released last year to critical acclaim. Fabrizio explains: “The performance is based on a fusion between Painting and Music. The paintings are the result of this fusion, the video its narration and the music its sound track. This synthesis is not simply an emotional response to the music, it happens in the technical execution of the painting itself: where the music generates, through sound vibrations, its own design/pattern on the canvas. BLUES allows the viewer to enter the two-dimensional space of the canvas, in a way to experience the sensations that an artist feels during the process of the making, facilitated by the live music.” A fascinating and immersive performance originally presented as part of The Acoustic Yard Music Festival in Westport. BOOK FESTIVAL Friday 7th - Sunday 9th October Wild Atlantic Words
Look out for the first Castlebar weekend of words - poetry, music, new writing, lively discussions, book launches, local history - and a few surprise guests as well. Wild Atlantic Words will celebrate the literary heritage of our rugged coastline over a weekend of readings, recitals, debates and reflection, while also acknowledging our new and emerging writers. This year’s debut event will have a particular focus on the centennial history of Mayo and its place in literature. Panel discussions will take as their theme the events of the last hundred years, but there will be plenty of time for input from the floor, and contrarian views will be expected and indeed welcomed! Wild Atlantic Words will also have the aim of fostering new young creative writing talent, and there will be attractive prizes on offer to school entries in prose and poetry. Young French pianist Nathalia Milstein won the 2015 Dublin International Piano Competition with what one critic described as an “electrifying” performance. Possessing phenomenal technique, Nathalia has also been lauded for her wonderfully expressive, heartfelt playing and quickly earned a reputation as an outstanding chamber musician as well as for her solo performances. For two decades Hot Club of Cowtown have been setting stages ablaze with their intoxicating blend of jaw-dropping virtuosity and down-home melodies, weaving together country, ragtime, big band jazz and blues to awesome effect. Based in Austin, Texas, the globetrotting trio are long-serving musical ambassadors for the US State department, bringing a barrel of joy to venues from Azerbaijan to the Sultanate of Oman, while touring with everyone from Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson to Roxy Music. Oozing warmth and charm, bassist Jake Ervin, guitarist Whit Smith and fiddler Elana James use every trick in the book to get those feet tapping: playing loose with tempos or ratcheting up the intensity with fretboard-blistering guitar licks, virtuosic fiddling and a Rockabilly-tinged slap-bass style. Hearts and Minds: An evening with Donal Ryan & Martin Dyar
Booker-nominated novelist Donal Ryan and Patrick Kavanagh Award-winning poet Martin Dyar present a special evening of collaborative and interactive explorations of their work. Reading in a special ‘call-and-response’ format, the two writers will also offer reflections on their creative processes and the centrality of rural Ireland to their writing. The event will be followed by a signing, with special-edition books available on the night. Donal Ryan is the author of novels The Spinning Heart and The Thing About December, and short-story collection A Slanting of the Sun. The Spinning Heart won the Guardian First Book Award, the EU Prize for Literature, and was shortlisted for the International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. His third novel, All We Shall Know, will be published worldwide in September 2016. Martin Dyar grew up in Swinford, Co Mayo. His debut book Maiden Names was a Book of the Year selection in the Guardian and Irish Times and was the winner of the 2009 Patrick Kavanagh Award, and the Strokestown International Poetry Award in 2001. Eve is a classically trained soprano from Castlebar. She has been a member of many musical groups including Anúna, Trinity Singers, Peregryne, Collegium and the multi-award winning chamber choir New Dublin Voices. Eve has been a soloist in numerous choral concerts in both Dublin and Galway. She won first prize in the Feis Ceoil’s Mná competition in 2014 which is for Irish-language unaccompanied singing for women. Eve began her vocal training in Castlebar with mezzo-soprano Anne Marie Gibbons before continuing her training with Mary Brennan, music lecturer in the Royal Irish Academy of Music. Eve sings with a purity that makes her performances captivating and unique. For this concert she will perform a selection of French Songs, Lieder and opera arias from Handel, Bach, Schumann, Gounod and more, as well as a selection of Celtic music accompanied by a traditional Irish Harp as well as a festive classic or two. An intriguing exhibition presenting four works, all of which “show some aspects of uncertainty”. Invisible Cities is a series of map drawings of cities that the artist never visited, made on paper with water, where the deformation on the paper “is the only proof that anything was drawn”. Banshee is a sound piece, comprising a recording of spoken word in languages that “have experienced violence or extinction” and which the artist herself does not understand. Pool of Darkness is a series of sculptures and found objects immersed in black water, offering a random invisible contemporary archaeology. Mining Damages represents a dream of a non-existent house: a recorded narration of the dream and a paper house that disintegrates over the course of the exhibition. Justyna is a Polish artist currently based in Co. Wicklow. She has exhibited widely in Poland, Ireland, N. Ireland, Italy, UK and Germany. Adm. Free Official opening on Thursday 25th August @ 7.00pm. Amongst these quirky, loveable animals, you will find a flying horse, a tortoise with a secret story and a toucan in disguise! Created by leading Irish and international artists from materials ranging from bronze, woods, ceramics and steel, you can learn about the techniques used to create the artworks and feel samples of the materials used. The Beautiful Beasts exhibition is made up of some of The Ark’s favourite pieces from its collection which spans its 21 years of commissioning professional artists to create work for children. The Cabinet of Wonders
The Cabinet of Wonders is an ongoing curated visual art project presented in the Foyer of the Linenhall. The project takes its inspiration from the fashion for Cabinets of Curiosities, which found their beginnings in the Renaissance and were still popular until the late 19th century. Inspired by the eclectic approach of the original collector-curators, it presents a range of works “to engage, intrigue, surprise and delight”. The current manifestation of The Cabinet of Wonders (on show until 24th September) presents a series of objects mined from the creative imagination of a selection of contemporary visual artists Fiona Coffey, Sandra Corrigan Breathnach, Medbh Gillard, Sarah Lundy, Bennie Reilly, Mary Ryan, John Waid and Ian Wieczorek. An exhibition of paintings by Mayo-based artist Fabrizio Simeoni, presented in conjunction with the multimedia art performance BLUES, which takes place on Tuesday 4th October at 8pm (See page 6).) “The paintings are the result of a fusion of painting and music, where the music generates, through sound vibrations, its own design/pattern on the canvas.” Born in Rieti, Italy 1965, Fabrizio is a graduate of Academy Lorenzo Da Viterbo. In 1992 he moved to the UK where he worked both as an artist and an Art Lecturer at the Liverpool Community College. Since 2001 he has lived and worked in the West of Ireland, where he continues developing his work alongside his commitment to delivering art classes as complementary therapy in the rehabilitation of service users within Mayo Mental Health Services. Adult workshop with Eithna Joyce Friday 14th October 10.30am-1.00pm We are delighted to offer this new workshop on modern calligraphy for beginners. A fresh and contemporary approach to the age old skill of beautiful writing, this revived and reimagined style of calligraphy is proving popular with type-lovers the world over. During this workshop you will be introduced to the joys of writing with dip nib and ink by learning the basic techniques, letter forms and how to compose words and phrases. Eithna Joyce is an artist working in a variety of media including oil, ink and collage. Solo exhibitions include Íontas, Castleblaney; Ballina Arts Centre; and Ennistymon Courthouse Gallery. A recipient of the EV+A curatorial award (2007), Eithna holds a degree in Fine Art in Art History, Paint and Professional Practice from GMIT. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: STAINED GLASS WORKSHOP Beginners Stained Glass Workshop for Adults
with Gabrielle Bishop Saturday 15th October 11.00am-5.00pm A one day introduction to stained glass for adults. Participants will make a small stained glass panel using the traditional techniques of leading, soldering, cementing and polishing. The history of stained glass will be touched on, as well as the technical details in relation to the various types of glass used. The workshop will connect traditional and contemporary stained glass practice with reference to Johannes Itten’s colour theory and the stained glass windows of Cologne Cathedral by Gerhardt Richter. Gabrielle Bishop has worked with stained glass for over 20 years both in restoration (Rose Window, Iglesia de Santa Maria Magdalena de Ponteulla, La Coruna, Spain; St Patrick’s Church, Louisburgh etc..) and as a creator of work in this medium. She holds degrees in History and Fine Art, and her work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows including AIB Eigse Open, Visual Carlow; Toradh Gallery, Ashbourne; Claremorris Open; Hyde Bridge Gallery, Sligo. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: ART WORKSHOPS Exploring the Techniques of the Great Masters
Adult workshop series with Peter Burns Six Mondays from 7th November 10.30am-1.00pm each day This series of combined lectures and practical workshops will explore the work of six renowned visual artists. The focus will be on painting and each week participants will investigate the work and techniques of one artist, as well as creating their own work in response. The workshops are open to both beginners and more advanced painters. Artists featured are: Jack Yeats, Jackson Pollock, Gwen John, Giorgio Morandi, Eugene Boudin and Edouard Manet. The aspects covered will include; Portraiture, Landscape, Still Life Object, Flower Painting, Abstract/Action Painting. Each participant will work on a new painting each week. The aim is not to have a finished piece at the end of each session, but rather to have gained a much better understanding of the processes these artists employed, and to have explored their work in a practical sense. These workshops will be investigative and exploratory and will be run in an informal and relaxed manner. Peter Burns has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions. Solo exhibitions were held at Fenderesky Gallery, Belfast; Hillsboro Fine Art, Dublin; and Claremorris Gallery. Selected group exhibitions include Last, Douglas Hyde Gallery, Trinity College, Dublin; Making Familiar, Temple Bar Gallery; and Futures 12, RHA Gallery. He holds a BA in Sculpture and MFA in Painting from The National College of Art & Design, Dublin. He has worked with Hugh Lane Gallery and National Gallery of Ireland as Artist/ Facilitator and as a visiting tutor for the MA in Painting, National College of Art and Design. He lives and works in Co. Mayo. Exploring the Techniques of the Great Masters takes place over six Monday mornings commencing November 7th (continuing 14th, 21st, 28th November; 5th & 12th December) from 10.30am1.00pm each day. CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOPS Great Masters for Tiny Masters, for 2-4yrs
with artist Mary Noonan Four Fridays commencing 11th November, 10.30am-11.30am Are you ever too young to be introduced to great works of Art? We don’t think so! This short workshop series aimed at young children explore the work of some of the Great Masters. Inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock and Jack B Yeats, we will make art that focuses on colour, line and shape, using a variety of materials. Experimentation and exploration are key elements of these workshops which are offered as a fun and relaxed start to your Friday. Mary Noonan holds an MA in Fine Art (painting) from NCAD and has presented numerous solo exhibitions both in Ireland and abroad. Her work is in the collections of the OPW, Wesley College, Irish Life and Meath County Council. She has delivered several very successful workshops and workshop series here at the Linenhall Arts Centre.
