In Flow is a unique and immersive performance fusing electronic music, gamelan* percussion and visuals. Composed and performed by That’s Life Players in collaboration with Andrew Madec, In Flow brings the audience through a soundscape of electronically processed gamelan percussion and live ensemble performance. Andrew has previously explored gamelan in a non traditional context in his album Gamelan Reimaginings. He now continues on this path with That’s Life Players in an Arts and Disability context. This collaboration has inspired new and inclusive ways of composing for gamelan and electronics. The result, In Flow, is a beautiful atmospheric and textured work which will surprise, enchant and move the audience. *Gamelan is the traditional ensemble music of Java and Bali in Indonesia, made up predominantly of tuned bronze percussive instruments. St Gerald’s College Art and Music Department very proudly presents its sixth annual Spring/Summer Recital. The Music Department is a busy spot in St Gerald’s College with students involved in much music making both in the school and locality. Highlights of the Recital will include: the SGC Trad Group, solo singers, the TY Ukulele orchestra, a medley from the school musical, instrumentalists and various ensembles from 1st to 6th Year. A variety of genres will feature from rock to pop, classical to traditional. All are welcome to see and hear for themselves just how talented these young boys are! Tomas Coimin - Ignominy
The launch of Mayo-based, Tipperary-born Tomas Coimin’s first novel. Two years ago, Tomas had a fall resulting in a C4 spinal injury, leaving him paralysed from the chest down. “It has not been easy”, he says, “but thanks to my faith, I have been able to conquer my disability and move forward with enthusiasm. I have been writing for over 16 years and am thrilled to finally have my book finished and published. My book has been in the works for seven years on and off and I believe the finished product is ready for a good read. Ignominy introduces us to Timothy Fogarty, a jack of all trades and master of many. He has been following and tracking the movements of paedophiles across the USA, and has been planning to terminate the lives of the worst of them. However, he was not expecting romance any time soon - love at first plight, one could say, as they appeared to share mutual interest - and so his life goes into high gear as he steps up the process of eliminating his targets.” Come along and join Tomas to celebrate his first book in print. Harmonia was founded in 2008 by the Retired Teachers’ Association of Mayo, under the baton of Úna Quinn. From its formation, the choir has grown in membership and experience and now comprises over 50 members. It is a choir for men and women whose aims include achieving a standard of excellence in choral singing along with creating a spirit of enjoyment and camaraderie among choir members. It can be said that the choir’s ‘raison d’être’ is singing for enjoyment, a sense of community and bringing music to everyone. The choir’s repertoire includes a wide variety of musical genres, with classical and sacred songs, some of the great Irish language songs and contemporary songs. The choir has performed at the Mayo International Choral Festival each year, and in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet, as well as taking part in many community and charitable events. Johnny Duhan started his career as a fifteen year old front man with Granny’s Intentions, the most popular beat group in Ireland in the 60s. After rousing Dublin with their soul touch, they moved to London, were signed to the prestigious Deram label, enjoyed considerable success and disbanded before Johnny was twenty one. Johnny started writing folk songs, poetry and prose at this stage. YOUTH ARTS: OPEN MIC Wednesday 1st June @ 7.00pm Youth Open Mic
The Idea of a Young Open Mic is to encourage young people to try out the art of performing. Many children and young people play music, sing, or attend classes. However, the chance to play in front of others can be rare. An informal Open Mic also allows for working with nerves in a safe and encouraging place. Even with no experience, the uniqueness of each act shines, making a special event for everyone. So, why not try out a party piece, either alone, or with friends! Perhaps teachers would encourage students to get involved? Others are welcome to listen, learn and build courage. Bring a friend or family member. The Linenhall has previously run Open Mic nights for song and the spoken word. This variation of a Young Open Mic was proposed by Finola Reilly, a previous attendee, who also teaches with Mayo Youth Orchestra. The first production from the newly formed Railway Theatre Group. Three Plus One was devised by both the actors and the writer. The play explores the dynamic relationships of three sisters, the complex and highly nuanced nature of the mother/ daughter relationship and the idea of how three women, each from a different generation, could be connected by making the same mistake. That mistake being to each fall in love with the same man, and not realise the truth about him until, sadly in the case of one character, it is literally too late. An exhibition of mixed-media and installation by Fermanaghbased visual artist Tara Moran-Woods. Tara explains: “The exhibition explores the life of a visually impaired person, based on the experience of a family member who has gradually lost their sight over the past 20 years. The exhibition features personal belongings and household items that have been adapted to adjust to everyday life, and how memory, touch and order become a way to adapt to life without sight. It also addresses the deterioration of sight, the loss of handwriting and reading abilities, and a new reliance on other people.” Tara graduated from Sligo IT with a Degree in Fine Art in 2006 and has exhibited throughout Ireland. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 10th June - Saturday 9th July Tadhg McGrath - The Way Things
An exhibition of large textural paintings by artist Tadhg McGrath exploring memory and contemporary history, applying traditional techniques to current mediated reportage. Tadhg explains: “The Way Things is a series of paintings and drawings derived from imagery of environmental protests in Mayo in 2006-7. The paintings are made in shallow relief in wire and plaster, and then painted in oils. The surfaces are treated to create a mixture of textures. These images are influenced by religious art (such as Via Crucis/Way of the Cross paintings) and things like the stone carved faces at Dysert O’Dea in County Clare, as well as direct experience of attending protests.” Tadhg McGrath is an artist from Dublin. He has an Honours Degree from Central Saint Martin’s in London and a Masters Degree from the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. Kevin Gaffney - A Numbness in the Mouth
A Numbness in the Mouth is an exhibition of new film and photographic work by Kevin Gaffney. The film takes place in an Ireland of the near-future; a self-sustaining, militarized island, where climate change has benefited agricultural production. A spokeswoman for the government- speaking in our popular native tongue- informs us that due to the record crop yield of wheat there is a surplus of flour on the market. Thus, to retain economic balance, consumption rations for bread and other flour products have been issued. Each citizen is requested to consume more than five pounds of flour per day, until advised otherwise. Kevin Gaffney is a visual artist working in film and photography. He was awarded a prestigious Sky Academy Arts Scholarship for this exhibition and was an UNESCO-Aschberg Laureate Artist in Residence at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art’s Changdong Residency in South Korea in 2014. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Thursday 25th August - Saturday 1st October Justyna Gruszczyk - On Nothing
An intriguing exhibition presenting four works, all of which “show some aspects of uncertainty”. Invisible Cities is a series of map drawings of cities that the artist never visited, made on paper with water, where the deformation on the paper “is the only proof that anything was drawn”. Banshee is a sound piece, comprising a recording of spoken word in languages that “have experienced violence or extinction” and which the artist herself does not understand. Pool of Darkness is a series of sculptures and found objects immersed in black water, offering a random invisible contemporary archaeology. Mining Damages represents a dream of a non-existant house: a recorded narration of the dream and a paper house that disintegrates over the course of the exhibition. Justyna is a Polish artist currently based in Co. Wicklow. She has exhibited widely in Poland, Ireland, N. Ireland, Italy, UK and Germany. Adm. Free

St. Gerald’s College Art and Design Department Exhibition 2016 Art students at St. Gerald’s College, Castlebar with their Art and Design teacher Ms. Jean Bourke are preparing for the annual exhibition. “The Art Department in the school is a vibrant environment with on-going projects in a variety of crafts such as Printmaking, 3D work in Clay Modelling, Wire Construction and Plaster of Paris. Students of all abilities are encouraged to express their creative side. All Art students and their parents are welcome to attend the exhibition opening.” Adm. In the early months of 2015, Alison Laredo captured a moment as it unfolded in history. Lesbians and gay men and their supporters came together all over rural Ireland to campaign for a Yes vote in the Marriage Equality Referendum. Yes Equality Mayo took up the fight here and Alison was there every step of the way, from a determined beginning to the victory that emerged from the count on May 23rd. Alison’s photography is renowned for getting to the emotional core, for telling the personal story. Ten Weeks That Changed the World charts the journey of a social movement with beautiful photography. But there is an intimacy here. We see the people who spoke out, who stood out, visible in the community. Alison’s photographs take us to that point where the personal becomes political, where solidarity becomes community and where that translates into revolution. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP CREATIVE WRITING INSPIRED BY THE FIVE SENSES Workshop series for adults with Jean Tuomey Five Fridays commencing 13th May, 11.00am-1.00pm A creative writing course focusing on the five senses - taste, touch, sight, sound, smell. This workshop series is ideal for those who would like to write but find they cannot get started, and offers participants the opportunity to write in an encouraging environment. Each week participants will use triggers from the Linenhall Arts Centre’s offerings to get their ideas flowing. From attending the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s The Magic of the Movies concert in Christchurch, Castlebar (on Wednesday 18th May), and visiting Tara Moran-Woods’ concurrent exhibition in our gallery; to tasting from our coffee shop menu, and exploring the textures and smells in our building; participants will have a whole range of starting points for putting words on the page. Each week, a different sense will be explored and guidance will be provided to support your writing practice. No previous experience of writing is necessary, just a willingness to give it a go. The series is under the guidance of Jean Tuomey, a teacher with over 20 years experience. She trained as a writing facilitator with the National Association for Poetry Therapy in the US, and has a passionate enthusiasm for creative writing. Jean has led many extremely successful writing projects for the Linenhall. CREATIVE WRITING INSPIRED BY THE FIVE SENSES for Adults takes place over five Friday mornings commencing 13th May from 11.00am-1.00pm (continuing 20th, 27th May and 3rd, 10th June). HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: DRAWING WORKSHOP EXPLORATIONS IN DRAWING FOR ADULTS workshop series with Breda Burns Five Mondays from 23rd May, 11.00am-1.00pm A chance to explore drawing across a range of techniques and approaches. Week 1 - Mark Making; Week 2 - Still Life; Week 3 Landscape; Week 4 - Personal Memento; Week 5 - Experimentation building on experiences in the first four weeks. This workshop is suitable for both beginners and those with some drawing experience. Artist Breda Burns will guide participants in a relaxed and supportive workshop environment. Breda Burns is a Westport based artist. She holds an honours degree in Sculpture and has exhibited her work widely both in solo and group exhibitions. Breda has been teaching, leading community art projects & facilitating art workshops for many years. CHILDREN’S ART WORKSHOPS ART PLAY for 2-4 year olds Workshop series with Lucy Hill Three Saturdays, commencing 11th June, 11.15am-12.15pm ART PLAY is a series of three Saturday workshops for children aged 2-4 years to explore their creativity with a parent or guardian. Focused on a variety of visual processes using foraged natural materials and home-made art supplies including paints, pastes and tactile ‘goops’, the workshop will provide plenty of ideas for parents to maximise the use of everyday materials in supporting their child’s creativity. Children get to make their own creative decisions in a safe environment under the guidance of artist and workshop facilitator Lucy Hill. Lucy Hill is a Newport based painter who studied painting in Cork, Dublin and Barcelona. Her work has been exhibited throughout the country and she has been the recipient of numerous awards, public art commissions and residencies. Lucy is currently a PhD student at NCAD researching ‘pedagogical materials for the digital age’. Despite this (!) her workshops exude an air of happy and calm playfulness in an environment where children are free to explore artistic materials as they please. ART PLAY runs over three weeks from Saturday 11th June (continuing Saturdays 18th & 25th June) from 11.15 - 12.15pm. NB. Children must be accompanied by a guardian. PLEIN AIR PAINT-OUT PLEIN AIR PAINT-OUT Open-air Painting/Sketching Event for adults in Castlebar Saturday 18th June 11.00am-5.00pm The Linenhall invites all artists and artistic ‘dabblers’ to come out painting ‘en plein air’ in the environs of Castlebar! Plein air is simply a French term for painting outdoors. Painters and sketchers of all standards are invited to meet up at the Linenhall Arts Centre Coffee Shop at 11.00am on Saturday 18th June, before heading out and painting a scene (or scenes) of their choice. This is a self-directed event, not a taught workshop, and is coordinated by Plein Eire West member Noelle Angley. There is no competition, your artistic results won’t be judged. It is a day out painting for the sheer enjoyment of it. This event presents the perfect opportunity to meet up with other painters, brave it out into public space, and capture the character and beauty of Castlebar town using paint, ink, pastels, or even just pencil. Painters can choose to meet up again at lunchtime, and should reconvene at 5pm at the Linenhall for a coffee to show your work and share your experiences of the day. Depending on the level of attendance an exhibition of works may be arranged for a later date in the Linenhall Foyer. What to bring: easel, chair (optional), with oil/acrylic/watercolour/pastel paints (white, blue, red, yellow minimum), canvas/ board/paper, brushes, turpentine/water, palette etc. Sketchers need only bring a sketchbook and pencils/charcoal. In case of inclement weather (!) please bear in mind that there are lots of ways to attach your umbrella to your easel, and the town is full of archways and canopies! Suitable areas of shelter will also be identified around the town. PLEIN AIR PAINT-OUT is a free event and takes place on Saturday 18th June starting at 11.00am at the Linenhall Arts Centre. Taking place on the inspirational island of Inishbofin, WRITE AWAY is an exciting opportunity to write in an encouraging environment under the popular guidance of Jean Tuomey. This workshop offers a guided, supportive writing environment, and while the craft of writing will be touched on, it is not the primary focus of the course. It is especially suitable for first-time writers or those who have not yet experienced the positive atmosphere of a writing group, however all levels are welcome. The only requisite is enthusiasm. SUMMER WORKSHOPS SUMMER ART WORKSHOPS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE from 5th - 28th July 2016 We have a group of wonderful professional artists who want to share their amazing skills with you, so we are offering a series of 1-day and 3-day workshops throughout July exploring a whole range of different ways to make art. You will need to bring a lunch with you each day and wear loose comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting in a mess. Our Team of Workshop Facilitators These workshops will be facilitated by the Linenhall Arts Centre’s Community Arts Team which currently comprises: Marian McHale studied Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Her medium of choice is paint, and she has many years experience working in the field of interior design. Aisling Holian holds an Honours Degree in Production Design for Theatre, Film & TV from IADT and a Degree in Product Design from CIT. Aisling’s career spans from Architecture to working in Theatre & Film. She has exhibited her Fine Art in both solo and group shows throughout Ireland. Tríona Langan holds a degree in Product, Footwear and Apparel Design from London College of Fashion, and a HDip in Community Education. She has many years experience as a teacher and workshop facilitator, and is the newest member of the Linenhall’s Community Arts Team.

Stop Press! (for 4-7 year olds) Tuesday 5th July 10.30am - 2.00pm, including a 30 min break Print making is an exciting technique that can be used to create fantastic graphic images. Here’s your chance to try it out for yourself using the Linenhall’s table-top printing press. Using a variety of techniques - block printing and monoprint - you’ll end up with your own unique greeting card designs to take home. Adm: €6 per participant
Bring a Story to Life (for 4-7 year olds) Wednesday 6th July 10.30am - 2.00pm, including a 30 min break Beginning with a story-reading and discussion, you’ll turn the story into pictures using a variety of art materials and your own imagination - just like they do in picture books. Finally, using model making techniques, bring your favourite characters from the story to 3D life! Adm: €6 per participant
Shoe Box Circus (for 4-7 year olds) Thursday 7th July 10.30am - 2.00pm, including a 30 min break Create a circus and fill it with all the animals, performers, clowns, trapeze and tightrope acts. Using textured rubbings stencilling, 3d paper craft and paint, you’ll be making your very own circus to run away with! Adm: €6 per participant
Build a Picture (for 8-12 year olds) Tuesday 12th to Thursday 14th July (NB: 3-day workshop) 10.30am - 2.00pm daily, including a 30 min break In this workshop series you’ll start out by creating lots of effects on paper (marbling, cracked wax, blow painting etc...). You’ll then use them to build up a picture of your favourite view, focusing on background, middle ground and foreground. The final step will be to work the 2d layers into a full 3d version of your picture, presented in a layered box frame. Adm: €20 per participant

Explore the Linenhall’s table top printing press using a variety of techniques including mono-printing, collograph and etching, and discover the possibilities of this fantastic way to make art. Paint like a Pro (for 8-12 year olds)
Wednesday 20th July 10.30am - 2.00pm, including a 30 min break Create a still-life painting from scratch. Discover how to plan the art work from sketching out the composition to deciding on a colour scheme. Explore paint application techniques (brush work, layering, creating textures) and put it all together as you create a final painting on canvas. Adm: €6 per participant
Stencil Style (for 8-12 year olds)
Thursday 21st July 10.30am - 2.00pm, including a 30 min break Explore the wonderful world of stencils. Artists have used stencils through the ages, from stencil paintings of hands on cave walls to the works of the Cubists, and from book illustrators and contemporary graffiti artists. In this workshop explore using stencils to make a stunning range of colourful designs, patterns and your own distinctive artworks. Adm: €6 per participant
Monster Me! (for 4-7 year olds)
Tuesday 26th to Thursday 28th July (NB: 3-day workshop) 10.30am - 2.00pm daily, including a 30 min break Here’s an in depth workshop series in which you’ll explore lots of different ways to create effects on paper (marbling, cracked wax, blow painting etc...). Over the next two days you’ll use the results to build your own monsters in 2d and 3d using collage and construction techniques, as well as your own hands and feet. Make them as scary as you like!
