THEATRE Wednesday 29th April @ 8.00pm

Asylum Productions - The Chronicles of Oggle

Meet Pakie. An orphan, a storyteller, an adventurer, a survivor. He may not be the sharpest sandwich in the toolbox, but Pakie’s got secrets. Secrets the God fearing people of Oggle may not be ready to hear… The Chronicles of Oggle is a tragicomic life story of Pakie, a man in his 50s and a by-product of institutional Ireland. His childlike wisdom questions the very fabric of the society that has spawned him, a society of fanatical and institutional madness - a society that has fundamentally failed him. Although severely disadvantaged, Pakie is indomitable, and he prevails no matter what the obstacles. Written and performed by Peter Gowen, and directed by Donal Gallagher, this is a hilarious and heart-breaking story of small towns and even smaller minds, underpinned by a tour de force central performance. “…excellent performance and writing.” Irish Examiner “…a comic tale of our times - startling, enjoyable and sad – a sharply faceted performance.” - Irish Times “Gowen… has the audience reeling.” - Playstosee.com “Funny, lyrical... evocative.” - Irish Theatre Magazine Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

AMERICAN ROOTS/OLD-TIME Wednesday 13th May @ 8.00pm Foghorn Stringband

The Foghorn Stringband is the present day shining gold standard for American string band music, with eight albums, thousands of shows, over a decade of touring under their belts, and an entirely new generation of old-time musicians following their lead. Through all this, they’ve never let the music grow cold; instead they’ve been steadily proving that American roots music is a never-ending well of inspiration. The band’s music today, as heard on their new album Devil In The Seat, revolves around four master musicians: Oregon-based Caleb Klauder (vocals, mandolin, fiddle) and Reeb Willms (vocals, guitar), and Yukon-based Nadine Landry (vocals, upright bass) and Stephen ‘Sammy’ Lind (vocals, fiddle, banjo). Each member comes not only from a different part of the American roots music spectrum, but leads the pack in their field as well. Onstage, they gather around one microphone, balancing their music on the fly, and playing with an intense, fiery abandon. “On Devil in the Seat, Foghorn Stringband proves once again that they are still the Chosen Ones when it comes to down-home, footstomping, ass-kickin’ old time music.” - Stuart Mason, FiddleFreak “Effervescent energy.” – Tom Franks, Folk Words Adm: €16 / €14 (concessions) / €10 (special Bealtaine rate for 65+)

THEATRE Thursday 3rd September @ 8.00pm

Declan Gorman - The Dubliners Dilemma

The Dubliners Dilemma is the hit theatrical show adapted from the stories of James Joyce. Declan Gorman’s acclaimed oneman tram-hurtle through James Joyce’s Dubliners has wowed audiences from Ireland to Moscow since its launch in 2012. It was the top-selling and top-billing event for Bloomsday at the James Joyce Centre in 2014 before transferring to The Garden of Genius Festival at Yasnaya Polyana in Russia. Set in 1914, London publisher Grant Richards has determined to re-read Joyce’s controversial manuscript, eight years after rejecting it over fears it might breach British and Irish obscenity laws. As the racy, comic stories of Joyce’s childhood and young adult world spring to life around him, Richards relives his frustrating correspondence with the petulant Irish writer. Should he risk everything second time around and be the one to launch this volatile but brilliant genius on a world about to descend into the madness of war? “Gorman holds the audience enraptured throughout with a truly mesmerising performance... Remarkable” - Metro Herald “Ingenious... very entertaining one man show.” - Mail on Sunday “Compelling… animated and intelligent.” - Irish Theatre Magazine Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 17th April - Saturday 23rd May Vicky Smith - A Final Soar Into Orbit

Featuring an atmospheric installation, photography, film work and figurative clay sculptures, Vicky Smith reflects on “the disappearance of an RAF pilot, the legacy that has resulted over three generations, strong independent women and an obsession with flight and missions to space.” The nature of the work is inspired by her great grandfather, the book Astronaut Wives’ Club by Lily Koppel, the Life magazine images taken from this time, her grandfather’s photographs and the re-appropriated fictional TV character Arthur Daley. Within this installation the artist examines this legacy resulting in a fictional end to the story. Vicky Smith’s practise explores the tendency of art to be effective in the real world, and miscommunication and translation between art forms and concepts. Smith is a visual artist based in Engage Arts Studios in Galway. She has an MA from NCAD’s Faculty of Visual Culture, an MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy from Goldsmiths College, London, and a BA from Crawford College of Art. She is currently joint Project Coordinator of Engage Art Studio Project. Adm. Free

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 29th May - Saturday 4th July

Thomas Brezing - Why Stop Dreaming When You Wake Up?

An exhibition of painting and installation that reflects the artistic opportunity to prolong childhood through play and possibility. “Most thoughts going into my current art practice are informed by what I experienced as a child, in my dreams, visions, in silence and in my actual life. ‘Day dreaming’ for an artist is essential. These works are loosely based on the notion of landscape and location, woods, water, in some cases the human presence and how we interact with our environment and respond to it. The paintings are not pre-planned, but rather the actual act and pleasure of painting takes over and chance and looseness play as much a role as concrete thinking… striving towards a totality that is impossible to achieve.” Thomas Brezing was born in Germany in 1969 and moved to Ireland in the 1990s. He has exhibited widely in Ireland and also in Germany, Wales, England, Finland and Belgium. “It is Brezing’s insatiable curiosity - intellectually, spiritually and philosophically - and the remarkable generosity of will that he invests in his art and life that makes him such a considerable artist.” - Patrick Graham Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 29th May at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 10th July - Saturday 22nd August Diane Henshaw - Drawing from the Land

An exhibition of drawings by artist Diane Henshaw. A modern IrishEnglish dictionary translates the word dinnseanchas as ‘topography’ (the science of place), but its etymology is more complex, originally referring to an ancient genre of mythological geography that gave a poetic account of place names. Diane is seeking in her works to express the spirit of dinnseanchas in a modern idiom, as a ‘cognitive-imaginative mapping’ of the environment through forms of artistic engagement. Diane deals with the abstract and her work is known for its pared down lines and formulated composition. Her artistic process displays the history of marks of decisions past, of the time spent, and the material layers used to build up her images. The overall impression is that the drawing process may contain anything, but its success depends upon combining its parts into a cohesive, spontaneous unity. Over the past 20 years Diane has exhibited in Europe, North America, Asia and Indonesia, and has held numerous artist residencies both in Ireland and internationally. She is a founding member of Outland Arts and The Drawing Box. Her work is in many private collections. Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 10th July at 7.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 28th August - Saturday 3rd October Conor O’Grady - Green Carnations

“If you are not like everybody else, then you are Abnormal, if you are Abnormal, then you are Sick… These three categories: not being like everybody else, not being normal and being sick are in fact very different but have been reduced to the same thing.” - Michel Foucault Green Carnations is the inaugural solo exhibition of Visual Artist Conor O’ Grady. The exhibition is the culmination of an ongoing practice which references several aspects of societal, cultural and artistic modes of consumption. The exhibition uses traditional art approaches to re-present the contemporaneous experiences of Irish gay people, focusing particularly on those most at risk of experiencing societal, political and emotional oppression. Green Carnations reflects consistent signifiers of our shared histories; images of isolation, alienation and otherness that are evoked in traditional Irish culture, and substitutes them for experiences that characterise the palpable sense of trauma and societal estrangement expressed throughout entire generations of Irish gay people. Adm. Free Official opening on Friday 27th August at 7.30pm. All welcome.

EXHIBITION CALL-OUT Landscape in Line: an invitation to be a part of an exhibition!

?

?

?

? ?

?

?

??

?

We’re inviting all of YOU to be part of the Linenhall’s Landscape in Line exhibition! Here’s a chance to take part in a collective art project and celebrate the act of drawing to mark this year’s National Drawing Day (see p.17 of this programme). The idea is to create a joined up ‘ribbon’ landscape made up from lots of individual drawings that are all linked only by a common horizon line. What we’re asking is that you take an A5 piece of paper or card and draw a landscape on it following the guidelines below. And then send it to us here at the Linenhall so we can present it as part of a big, joined up landscape to be exhibited in the Linenhall Foyer. GUIDELINES FOR INCLUSION (NB - we’re being strict with this!): 1. Use a single A5 piece of paper or card (dimensions: 148 x 210mm - fold an A4 piece of paper in half and there you have it!). 2. Use any drawing medium – pencil, pen, marker, crayon, charcoal… - and DRAW your imagined view of a landscape. Urban, rural, historical, exotic, psychedelic: it’s up to you... IMPORTANT: - The horizon line MUST be at the same height at the left and right edges (- what happens in between is up to you!).

- What you draw is completely contained within the piece of paper – ie nothing should ‘bleed’ off the edges (so that each drawing can be joined up to the next) as smoothly as possible. 3. Put your name and contact details (name, tel no, email, address) on the reverse of the drawing. 4. Post or drop in your submission to the Linenhall Arts Centre, Linenhall Street, Castlebar, marked ‘National Drawing Day’. 5. One submission per person. Closing date for entries is Friday 8th May at 5.00pm. Works will not be for sale. After 23rd May, works may be collected from the Linenhall (NB: sorry, no postal returns unless you send an appropriate sized stamped, self-addressed envelope.) Please note uncollected work will be retained only until 30th June. Have fun, and help us put the ‘line’ into Linenhall!...
