Happy New Year Everyone.

Oisín here, some of you probably know me from seeing me about the building. I am Technical/Buildings Manager for the Linenhall and have been working here for nearly twelve years. To be honest the twelve years feel more like one, time just zips by. My role here now is mainly based around my duties as Technical Manager. This means I get to see what a show looks like before it is unloaded from a van, I meet all the background people involved in getting the shows to the finished product you see on stage. It still amazes me when we start lifting in the gear or moving a set into place how we always manage to pull it all together in time for the audience to take their seats, and hopefully have a wonderful night’s entertainment. I count myself extremely lucky that I get to see the whole magic, be it a theatre show from truck to stage to lights to performance and back to truck on the same day. Or working with a visual artist on an installation in the gallery and helping them make their ideas real. All of the great musicians I’ve set up for, whose talents soar through the sound of beautiful instruments. But I can be spotted doing other bits and pieces around the Centre. If something is broken, blocked, stuck, flooded, falling, freezing, overheating, or just not working, I get called. One job I love is meeting, greeting and seating our audiences and I have to apologise for sometimes not recognising you - (I am looking at the seat numbers on your tickets). I also help run our wonderful coffee shop. This is our gateway to the Linenhall and without a doubt the friendliest cup of coffee in town thanks to the great Angela, Mary, Anne and Breda. In truth, my job is really to ensure you are safe and comfortable each and every time you visit. So all I have left to say is, turn to the next page, and the next, and keep reading to see what a wonderful programme we have lined up for you this Spring. And I look forward to welcoming you all in 2016.

[Director] Philippe Le Guay brings us another delicious, smart and cruel comedy about the pleasures of playing with words, arguing, discussing and rehearsing a play. CONTEMPORARY GUITAR Thursday 25th February @ 8.00pm Preston Reed

Blending multi-voiced grooves, soaring melodies and polyrhythmic percussion within story-telling compositions, Reed’s visionary approach fully exploits the orchestral potential of the acoustic guitar. From his roots in blues, rock, funk and jazz to explorations in Middle Eastern and neo-classical styles, Reed’s music embraces familiar sounds in a fresh and original way. His jaw-dropping skill and unrivalled musical creativity make for a mind-blowing live performance not to be missed. “… widely thought of as the world’s most gifted guitarist.” - Total Guitar “Spectacular… the best one-man show this reviewer has seen since Bruce Springsteen… A terrific performer.” - The Irish Independent “Remarkable…. WORLD CINEMA Tuesday 1st March @ 8.00pm The Wonders (Le Meraviglie)

2014 Italy 110mins Italian with English subtitles Alice Rohrwacher’s richly textured sophomore feature centers on a family of beekeepers living in stark isolation in central Italy. The dynamic of their overcrowded household is disrupted by the simultaneous arrival of a silently troubled teenage boy taken in as a farmhand, and a production crew recruiting local farmers to participate in a cheesy televised celebration of ancient Etruscan culture. Both intrusions are of particular interest to the eldest daughter, Gelsomina, who is struggling to find her footing in the world, and Rohrwacher manages to convey her adolescent sense of wonder and confusion with characteristically graceful naturalism. – Rotten Tomatoes website “Utterly unique. It is like being privy to a marvelous story that Rohrwacher is telling herself.” – Peter Keough, The Boston Globe “A personal, intimate film riffing on the wonderful strangeness of families - equally capable of love and destructiveness, happiness and despair, often all at the same time. Lyrical and warm... with tenderness and a winning sense of humour.” – Dave Calhoun, Time Out Adm. €5

THEATRE Thursday 3rd March @ 8.00pm Charolais

Charolais is an age-old tale of female rivalry with a new twist: the other woman is a cow, a literal one, a purebred Charolais heifer. Siobhan’s boyfriend is a farmer who devotes considerable attention to his prize heifer at the expense of his very pregnant girlfriend. Siobhan has developed a homicidal jealousy for this Charolais and is feeling equally murderous towards her snobbish soon-to-be mother in law. A dark comedy of love and longing: rarely in Irish theatre are the challenges of farming life and the joy of sex expressed so frankly or with such charm... Winner of Bewley’s Little Gem Award, written and performed by Noni Stapleton, directed by Bairbre Ní Chaoimh. Duration: 60 mins Suitable for ages 14years+ (mild sexual references) “A fast-paced, witty, and intensely emotional tale filled with laughter, loss and despair.” - Irish Times “Often hilarious, spectacularly humane and still keeping the bizarre elements in the mix. Stapleton is a rising star. ” - Cork Evening Echo “Hilarious take on rural life and love: superficially crude, it’s full of wisdom and tenderness.” - Sunday Independent Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

MUSICAL COMEDY Thursday 10th March @ 8.00pm The Nualas

With scorchingly brilliant new songs (and possibly a few old favourites too), red hot new chat and blistering new shoes, The Nualas are jetting into The Linenhall for one night only to leave you helpless with laughter, delirious with pleasure, and a little disorientated if you can’t remember which door you came in. The Nualas were formed in a Dublin kitchen in 1995, when Susan Collins, Anne Gildea and Tara Flynn got together over the leftovers at a party. And the rest was hysterical... Calling it a day in 2001, The Nualas triumphantly re-launched in 2011 (with Maria Tecce replacing Tara Flynn), to an instantaneous standing ovation, and have been touring ever since. If you’ve seen them before you’ll know why. If not, brace yourselves for a night of top entertainment, Nuala-style… “Astoundingly hilarious lyrics. Simply resonantly hilarious.” - The Event Guide “Beautiful vocal skills and a natural facility for artfully wry banter.” - Time Out “Wackily original.” - The New York Times Adm. €18 / €16 (concessions)

JAZZ Monday 14th March @ 8.00pm

Andy Sheppard - Shakespeare Songs

‘The great English poet of the saxophone’, jazz virtuoso Andy Sheppard joins forces with drummer Christophe Marguet and pianist Guillaume de Chassy in a musical journey across Shakespeare’s world. Part-improvised and part-written, the music draws inspiration from Renaissance composers, with the trio unleashing an extraordinary palette of sounds to conjure up everything from star-crossed lovers and brooding Danish princes to the rustling advance of Birnam Wood. West Country saxophone colossus Sheppard has composed over 350 works and collaborated with artists as varied as percussionist Nana Vasconcelos, violinist L. Shankar, pianist Joanna MacGregor, songwriter John Martyn and a myriad of leading jazz figures, including Carla Bley, George Russell and Gil Evans. De Chassy and Marguet, who share writing duties on the project, have between them collaborated with such luminaries as Paul Motian, Mark Murphy, Enrico Rava and Buddy de Franco. “Shakespeare Songs... a magical performance” – The Jazz Breakfast “Sheppard... an ability to make even the simplest melodic fragments sound profound and beautiful.” – The Jazz Mann Adm. €16 / €14 (concessions)

The Grump (Mielensäpahoittaja)

2014 Finland/Iceland 104mins Finnish with English subtitles Dome Karukoski directs this poignant and comical adaptation of Tuomas Kyro’s popular novel about an independent and curmudgeonly 80-year-old farmer who reluctantly goes to live in Helsinki at his son’s house for rehabilitation after twisting his ankle, while his mild-mannered son attempts to look after the farm in his absence. His career-oriented daughter-in-law clearly resents his presence, and the feeling is mutual, neither comfortable with altering their daily routines, while the Grump is also out of his comfort zone surrounded by the trappings of modern urban living. When his entrenched attitudes threaten to derail a business deal being brokered by his daughter-in-law, his presence threatens domestic catastrophe for the household and his son’s marriage. “Well crafted culture clash comedy.” – Jenny Kermode, Eye For Film “A Scandinavian film with a wicked sense of humor.” – Jesse Evans, The West End Magazine “A touching story about tolerance and closing the generation gap.” - Alissa Simon, Variety Adm. €5

Robbie O’Connor & Aisling O’Mara - Rebel Rebel

It is Dublin, on 24th April 1916. Ireland’s leading actors abandon a matinee performance of Cathleen Ni Houlihan. Stepping out of their costumes and taking their revolvers from beneath the Abbey stage, they march to Dublin Castle. Firing the first shots of the insurrection they destroyed the status quo and changed forever the course of Irish history. Helena Molony and Sean Connolly rehearsed for rebellion, carried out rebellion and suffered the fatal and living conquesences of their participation. Derived from reallife testimonies, Rebel Rebel chronicles the moments when a play spilled revolution from the stage onto the streets. Directed by Louise Lowe, performed by Robbie O’Connor and Aisling O’Mara. Presented in association with ANU Productions, first produced as Show in a Bag 2015 – a partnership between Fishamble: The New Play Company, Irish Theatre Institute and Tiger Dublin Fringe. “Artful, complex, and touching... directed with impressive verve and precision... a total pleasure to watch.” - Sunday Independent “Both actors bring an arresting intensity to their characters... Tana Bana

Ireland/India 2015 75mins Language: Hindi with English subtitles For more than two thousand years, so legend has it, the Muslim silk weavers of Varanasi have been working their trade, spinning, dyeing and weaving beautiful silk saris on simple wooden looms. But now their way of life is under threat from computerisation: a single operator can work four automated looms at the same time, and thousands of small family businesses are closing down. Pat Murphy’s documentary takes us on a journey through a day in the life of the men, women and children in the silk trade. Free from judgment, and filmed with an eye for poetic detail, Tana Bana offers a snapshot of a society teetering on the edge of a brutal modernity, with all the opportunities and losses that entails. - JDIFF ***Please note: Tana Bana’s director Pat Murphy will be in attendance, and will take part in a Q&A session after the screening. “Murphy’s fascinating documentary [is] beautifully appointed... while rich with luscious shots of fabrics, dye and crumbling architecture, remains rigorous in its focus.” - Donald Clarke, The Irish Times Adm. €5

A MAYO ARTISTS SHOW 2O15

VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 15th January - Saturday 13th February Cathy Carman - Diary

A sculptural installation encompassing bronze sculptures, floor drawings, found objects and sound. The show explores the timeline in the making of the sculpture. “The fundamental concern of my artistic practice is bearing witness to interior weather through the use of the figure in sculpture. My work explores the interior psyche, looking for the poetic moments in the female form, the primal image from the subconscious. My figures are carriers – some of burden, others joy – exploring the desire for love and belonging counterpointed by loss and fracture.” Cathy Carman was born in Portlaoise and studied sculpture at NCAD. She is widely acclaimed for her figurative work in wood, stone, bronze and ceramic. Her expressionist style is also evident in the many public commissions she has undertaken. She continues to exhibit regularly, both in-group and solo shows both in Ireland and abroad, and her more recent work has used digital imaging, natural materials found objects and sound to contextualize and counterpoint the figure. Her work is held in numerous public collections. Cathy is a member of Aosdana. Adm: Free Official opening on Friday 15th January at 7.30pm. All welcome.

Kathleen Lynn: Insider on the Outside, which runs concurrently in five visual arts venues around Mayo, is a creative investigation into the life and work of Kathleen Lynn by thirteen contemporary Irish artists and is curated by Catherine Marshall. Born into an Anglo-Irish family in Mullafaghry, County Mayo in 1874, Kathleen Lynn went on to play a significant role in 1916.
