Hi folks Yes, that salutation should be the giveaway that it isn’t Marie writing to you this brochure – no it is I, Maura, who has been given the honour this time round. Why? You might ask and honour you might wonder…reason being we are celebrating 25 years, yes 25 wonderful years of Linenhall Arts Centre. So, congratulations to one and all for being part of our reaching this milestone, yes, one and all because we could not have done it without you – you, our audience, friends, supporters and volunteers. Now I could go on to mention MY top moments or indeed performances over the years but that might just be too self indulgent and might also upset those who may have other favourites and at a time of celebration I’m not going to be the one to burst the bubble. But when I joined Marie 25 years ago, (yes I know we hardly look old enough to have been anywhere for 25 years!), it was my first real introduction to classical music and subtitled films – neither of which would have appeared on my list of ‘things I like’ BUT here I am, 25 years later, loving both. It’s amazing now when I look back to see how the space has developed on a number of levels, if you’ll pardon the pun. As in starting off in 1990 we had no ground-floor existence, all of our performances took place in the gallery space, with our audience seated on a man-made tiered seating arrangement that had to be taken in and out each time. Our office on the first floor had one ancient clickety- clack manual typewriter, 2 basic desks, 1 telephone, 1 Marie and 1 Maura! We recorded all ticket sales and reservations by hand in an A4 notebook…known to all as The Booking Book. But NOW look at us, 25 years on, quite the modern hub of culture with our newly refurbished, multi-functional and multi-disciplinary theatre space, our super-friendly ground floor coffee shop and the staff of 2 has magically transformed into a number of teams: coffee shop; community arts and office! It has to be said though, that while we do have a number of teams within the organisation including our Board of Directors, we just have one overall super-team, aka the Linenhall. So, might I suggest we raise a toast to the Linenhall, to 25 years of the finest art, film, music, theatre and things literary and as my darling Dad would say… go mbeirimid beo ag an am seo arís, which loosely translates as may we all be alive this time next year, or indeed 25 years time! As always please read on as the brochure is packed with the usual goodies and we look forward to seeing you regularly throughout this, our celebratory year. All the very best,

Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Patrick Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger has been touring the country for the past year to popular and critical acclaim including performances in the Irish Cultural Centre in Paris and the Cathedral Quarter Festival in Belfast. Generally considered to be Patrick Kavanagh’s finest work, The Great Hunger sharply delineates a life of economic and imaginative privation. A large part of the hunger the poem describes is sexual; its protagonist is bachelor farmer Patrick Maguire who has spent years at his mother’s beck and call. When she finally dies aged 91, he himself is 65 and has missed the boat in terms of finding a wife and having a family of his own, a source of acute sorrow and regret to him. The launch of Westport poet Ger Reidy’s highly anticipated third collection of poems, Before Rain, published by Arlen House. Ger Reidy has won several national poetry competitions. The Music Department is a busy spot in St Gerald’s College with students involved in much music making both in the school and locality. Highlights of the Recital will include: the grúpa ceoil, solo singers, the brand new TY Ukulele orchestra, instrumentalists and various ensembles from 1st to 6th Year. Gabriel Foley is a middle-aged bachelor farmer, who lives with his elderly mother. He has been unlucky in love many times, much to his mother’s frustration, and she thinks she’ll never get rid of him. Then he meets upmarket, Hazel Myers and joins the posh drama group in the nearby town in order to romance her. He is unaware that Chrissie McCabe - a cheerful countrywoman, who comes in to help him and his mother - fancies him. By the time Chrissie makes her feelings known to Gabriel, he has already got Hazel’s attention. He and Chrissie decide to try going out together. For the past fifteen years, Chris and Lynda Huxley have studied and photographed County Mayo’s unique marl lake, Lough Carra, setting up the website www.loughcarra.org . Now they are publishing their illustrated book on the Lough, which will be launched on Friday in conjunction with an exhibition of Deirdre Walsh’s impressionist paintings of the Lough and Lynda’s photographs. The book covers a wide range of topics from archaeology and art to angling and ecology, and is illustrated with Lynda’s photographs and Deirdre’s paintings. On Saturday afternoon, there will be a series of illustrated talks in the auditorium: Chris Huxley - Lough Carra’s wildlife; Cilian Roden Lough Carra’s aquatic ecology; Deirdre Walsh - her painting; and Yvonne McDermott - Burriscarra friary and the mendicant friars. [On Sunday morning, there will be guided walks around the Doon peninsula on Lough Carra. Joanna MacGregor is one of the world’s most dynamic and innovative musicians, appearing as a concert pianist, curator and collaborator. Midland 2/ Lár Tíre 2 is a multimedia installation of photographs, notebooks, maps, prints, audio clips and video focusing on the North West section of de Brí’s Midland Project. Taking inspiration from the culture and heritage of the railways and their location, and focusing on the former Midland Great Western Railway which traversed Ireland from East to West, the Midland Project interweaves history, folklore, hearsay, stories, memory, beliefs, nature and natural history, in an attempt to record the patina and texture of place. The work has been on-going from 2011 to the present. Pamela explains: “I am interested in the convergence of art and social documentary, how objects and images from the past embody cultural memory and characterize the future. My art presents a perspective on temporality and on an everevolving world, critiquing values and trends that result from social change.” Pamela has exhibited widely in Ireland with solo exhibitions in Galway, Kildare, Westmeath and Dublin, and group shows in Ireland, Wales, England and Australia. Born in 1988 in Cobh, Jack Hickey graduated from Crawford College of Art & Design in 2011. Following his degree show he has received considerable critical acclaim and a purchase prize from the OPW. In 2013 he began a new body of paintings entitled The Nocturnes, dealing with the social nightlife experience amongst Ireland’s young adults, which “illustrates the beautiful, the ridiculous, and the menacing of the clouded contemporary cityscape. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 6th March - Saturday 11th April DavId Begley - Breathe

Breathe is a solo exhibition of new works in charcoal animation by David Begley. Each animation is made of thousands of hand-drawn images using charcoal made from driftwood. David allows the process of drawing and erasing to prompt his images and narrative. Shimmering figures move between dark and light, haunting flickering worlds of water, breath, forests and fire where nothing is permanent and birds can transform to become islands, clouds and strange beasts. Combining recorded sounds of sea, wind and birdsong as well as piano recorded at The Tyrone Guthrie Centre, David has also composed the soundtracks for these works. David Begley’s drawings and paintings have been exhibited in America, Australia, Europe, China and he exhibits regularly in Ireland. Recent exhibitions include The RHA Annual Exhibition 2014, Irish Wave 2013 (Beijing, Shanghai), Eigse Carlow 2013/14, 12; and VUE National Contemporary Art Fair 2012. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 17th April - Saturday 23rd May Vicky Smith - A Final Soar Into Orbit

Featuring an atmospheric installation, photography, film work and figurative clay sculptures, Vicky Smith reflects on “the disappearance of an RAF pilot, the legacy that has resulted over three generations, strong independent women and an obsession with flight and missions to space.” The nature of the work is inspired by her great grandfather, the book Astronaut Wives’ Club by Lily Koppel, the Life magazine images taken from this time, her grandfather’s photographs and the re-appropriated fictional TV character Arthur Daley. Within this installation the artist examines this legacy resulting in a fictional end to the story. Vicky Smith’s practise explores the tendency of art to be effective in the real world, and miscommunication and translation between art forms and concepts. Smith is a visual artist based in Engage Arts Studios in Galway. She has an MA from NCAD’s Faculty of Visual Culture, an MA in Arts Administration and Cultural Policy from Goldsmiths College, London, and a BA from Crawford College of Art. VISUAL ART: FOYER Saturday 13th December - Saturday 31st January Kawaii Comics

Kawaii Comics is a group of young comics creators in Castlebar. Throughout autumn they worked with artist Maeve Clancy to explore graphic reportage and the use of comic form as a mode of expression in non-fiction contexts. This exhibition of large-scale comic strips is the outcome of three months of work wherein the group explored the work of a selection of organisations, groups and activities available to young people in Mayo, and reported on it in comic format. The exhibition features the work of Melissa Duffy, Anna Dreimane, Jane Faull, Chloe Hawe, Emily Nolan, and Rebekah Ryan. Maeve Clancy is an illustrator, animator, and paper artist. She has had a number of solo and group exhibitions, and her pop-up books feature on the music videos of Lisa Hannigan (Lille and I Don’t Know) and a 2013 Samsung advertisement. She has facilitated a number of workshops at the Linenhall Arts Centre, and is working on a graphic novel. MAN UP is about one simple but powerful thing – men showing pride and leadership, challenging abuse and violence and supporting women and children. Andrea Zipoli, a photographer from Milan and living in Galway, worked with SAFE Ireland and the MAN UP campaign to tell a photographic story about the positive role of men in the lives of women and children. He beautifully captures moments when men are supportive, encouraging and kind to women and children in this exhibition. VISUAL ART: FOYER Monday 9th - Wednesday 18th March St Gerald’s College Art Exhibition

The Art Department in St Gerald’s College is a vibrant environment with on-going projects in a variety of crafts such as printmaking, 3D work in clay modelling, wire construction and plaster of Paris. Linoprinting involves design skills with simplification of a drawing then transfer of design to lino and then carving and cutting the lino to achieve a variety of marks. The lino is then inked and printed to achieve a series of prints. The works on exhibition are evidence of the students’ design, cutting and planning skills combined with creative choices. Students of all abilities are encouraged to express their creative side. Adm. free

An exhibition of paintings by artist Deirdre Walsh and photographs by Lynda Huxley, presented in conjunction with Chris and Lynda Huxley’s Lough Carra Booklaunch, Art & Illustrated Talks at the Linenhall. Based in Partry, Co. Mayo, Deirdre Walsh is an established artist of many years standing, specialising in working en plein air. The nearby Lough Carra has provided an ongoing inspiration for her work. “Light is my inspiration... I chase the fleeting west of Ireland light. I am left in awe with every attempt to catch it.” Deirdre has exhibited widely in Ireland, and also in the US and N. Ireland, and has works in many collections including Leinster House and the OPW. In this creative writing workshop series, participants will delve into the poetry of Patrick Kavanagh, and select elements of it as starting points or triggers for putting words on the page. To get the ideas flowing the course will begin with attendance at Peter Duffy’s powerful theatrical performance of Kavanagh’s poem The Great Hunger. Each week elements from the work of Kavanagh will be considered and guidance will be provided to support your writing practice. No previous experience of writing is necessary, just a willingness to give it a go. The series is under the guidance of Jean Tuomey, a teacher with over 20 years experience. She trained as a writing facilitator with the National Association for Poetry Therapy in the US, and has a passionate enthusiasm for creative writing. Jean has led many extremely successful writing projects for the Linenhall. FASHION DESIGN WORKSHOP FOR YOUNG PEOPLE Passion Fashion for 9-12 year olds

with artist Vivianne Maloney Four Saturdays commencing 24th January, 11.00am-1.00pm If you’re young and love style then this workshop is for you! In this whirlwind introduction to the fashion design process you’ll learn how to develop a fashion design idea, from the initial brainstorming process, through to your finished fashion illustration. Participants will explore the core components of Fashion Design beginning by creating a fashion journal and engaging in brainstorming activities. You will explore the possibilities of, fabric and texture, colour-ways and prints, and finally, complete the process by learning how to produce fashion illustrations. Vivianne Maloney studied Fashion at Limerick School of Art and Design. She worked in the fashion industry for eight years and her Fine Art work has been exhibited in numerous group shows. Vivianne is currently a member of the Linenhall’s Community Arts Team devising and delivering our Visual Art Programme for Schools. workshop series with Betty Gannon 11.30am-1.00pm, for ﬁve Mondays from 9th February Here’s your chance to explore and develop your drawing skills with guidance from an experienced artist. Drawing, like handwriting, is a very individual thing. Discover your unique way of drawing and create your own techniques. In this relaxed series of workshops participants will explore a variety of themes such as looking and observing, line, mark making, texture, form, space, light, shade, measurement, and composition. Drawing materials such as pencils, charcoal, biros, crayons - whatever makes a mark - can be used. From each workshop you will begin to build up a visual vocabulary of mark making to use in your drawing. Betty Gannon lives and works in Westport. Her workshops here at the Linenhall are hugely popular. She studied Fine Art at GMIT and works mainly in drawing, painting and 3D work. She has exhibited in both solo and group shows throughout Ireland and beyond, and her work is in several private and public collections. She is also a visiting artist to various National Schools in Co Mayo. ART LECTURE SERIES Art in the Twentieth Century Lecture Series with Philip Shiels

Five Wednesdays commencing 25th February, 8.00-10.00pm Modern Art is often described as difficult, challenging, formidable, aloof, arrogant and inaccessible, verging on the nonsensical, frivolous and sometimes the downright ridiculous. But art in the Twentieth Century is also the story of dynamically changing practices inspired by, and reflecting, the turbulent history of that century. The aim of these five lectures is to consider the historical background and events, important artistic movements and crucial moments that have shaped and influenced contemporary art. Not so much a detailed blow by blow account of art history but more a survey of some of the most important movements and many “voices of art” from the last 150 years and how they relate to art we encounter today. 1) New Freedoms: Revolutions and the Avantgarde: The break with tradition and authority, the invention of photography and the birth of modernism. 2) The Construction of a New Century: Technology, Devastation and the Aftermath. The period from 1914 to 1945. 3) Brave New World: Developments in America and Europe. From abstract expressionism to pop art on the one hand, to reconsidering the “weight of history” on the other. 4) Mimimalism and Post-Modernism: “From “less is more” to “ornament is not a crime”. How art, architecture and popular culture won the day. The strange story of consumerism and art versus the development and spread of conceptual art. 5) Contemporay Directions and Musings: Regionalism in a globalised world. Artists and the art world today at home and abroad. This course is open to all and will appeal to anyone with an interest in the history of art, contemporary art and students studying for the Leaving Cert. Phillip Shiels is an artist and art historian. He holds an M.A in Philosophy and Modern Visual Culture, and has worked as a lecturer at colleges and third level instituitions for 25 years. Four Saturdays commencing 7th March, 12.00pm-1.00pm Are you ever too young to be introduced to great works of Art? We don’t think so! These short workshop series aimed at young children explore the work of some of the Great Masters. Inspired by artists like Claude Monet and Picasso we will make art that focuses on colour, line and shape, using a variety of materials. Experimentation and exploration are key elements of these workshops which are offered as a fun and relaxed start to your Saturday. Mary Noonan holds an MA in Fine Art (painting) from NCAD and has presented numerous solo exhibitions both in Ireland and abroad. Her work is in the collections of the OPW, Wesley College, Irish Life and Meath County Council. She has delivered several very successful workshops and workshop series here at the Linenhall Arts Centre. HEREâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S YOUR CHANCE: SINGING WORKSHOP Sing Out Loud, Sing Out Strong with Anne Marie Gibbons

11.00am-1.00pm, for eight weeks commencing Friday 13th March Back by popular demand, amazing singer and singing teacher Anne Marie Gibbons will work her magic in a series of eight workshops designed for adults who want to add some sparkle / gravitas / je ne sais quoi to their singing. This course will take the form of an introduction to singing for adults. It is designed as a confidence-building exercise which will give those taking part the techniques and skills required to sing a song from beginning to end with self-assurance and expression. Anne Marie will coach participants in vocal techniques (such as breathing) while also helping them to overcome nervousness to put a song across. Former attendees are more than welcome to return. A new element to the course will include opportunities for ensemble singing. Plenty of fun along the way is guaranteed!!

Anne Marie Gibbons is a mezzo soprano. She studied at the DIT Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin and subsequently at the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester. She was company principal at the English National Opera for three years, and has performed multiple operatic roles including among others Dorabella in Cosi Fan Tutte, Flora in La Traviata, Anna in The Trojans at Carthage and Pippo in La Gazza Ladra. She has an wide-ranging oratorio and concert repertoire, and has extensive experience as a singing teacher. Sing Out Loud Sing Out Strong takes place over eight Friday mornings commencing March 13th from 11.00am-1.00pm (continuing 20th, 27th Mar; 10th, 17th, 24th Apr; 1st, 8th May) Note that there is no class on 3rd Apr Good Friday. ART DOCUMENTATION WORKSHOP Art Documentation For Artists: How To Photograph Your Work with Tim Durham

Saturday 25th April, 10.00am-5.00pm Good quality imagery is essential for artists when making submissions and documenting their work. This workshop offers a practical introduction to photographing your own paintings, drawings, textiles and prints for use in portfolios, websites, etc. Photographer and lecturer Tim Durham presents a step-by-step methodical process to obtaining the best possible results with your digital compact camera or digital SLR. It is about getting the very best quality results from the equipment you have. The course will cover: exposure, ISO, white balance, apertures, depth of field, jpg quality, resolution of images, tripod use and much more. Tim Durham is a photographic artist living in Westmeath. He has been a practising artist since 1990 and teaching photography since 1992. Part of Tim’s work is digitally recording the work of other artists. Art Documentation For Artists takes place on Saturday 25th April 10.00am – 5.00pm. The cost for the workshop is €55 and booking is essential. (NB: Places are strictly limited, booking ESSENTIAL). Participants will be required to bring their digital camera (and manual if possible), blank memory card, fully charged battery (and spare if possible), cable for downloading images, tripod if you have one, and a piece of art work to photograph.
