Don Stiffe
Don Stiffe is one of the greatest singer/songwriters to have emerged on the Irish Folk Scene in recent years, receiving critical acclaim and awards both at home and abroad. A passionate and talented performer, his version of The Dimming of the Day won Vocal Cut of the Year at the Live Ireland 2010 Awards, a song that featured on his debut solo album Start of a Dream, released in 2006. In 2011 Don was a finalist in RTÉ’s All Ireland Talent Show, and was awarded Song of the Year at the Live Ireland 2011 Awards for his song Somebody Special, sung by Matt Keane. 2016 saw the release of Don’s new recording 1916 Classic Irish Ballads, and saw him touring America and Europe with Mary Black, Lúnasa, Maura O’Connell and Cherish The Ladies. ART TALK Tuesday 8th May @ 8.00pm Nolde: Talks on Tour
In order to continue to make the National Gallery of Ireland’s collections and exhibitions more accessible to audiences throughout Ireland, this particular programme sees Emil Nolde: Colour is Life go beyond the gallery walls and out into the community. In partnership with regional art centres around the country, a series of free illustrated talks on Emil Nolde’s life and work will take place for the duration of the exhibition. Delivered by Shane Morrissy, a member of the National Gallery’s education team, these hour-long talks will give those who wish to visit the exhibition in Dublin a wonderful introduction to what they’ll experience, while those who can’t make it to the exhibition will have the opportunity to see and hear about these unique works. Voxfusion is a relatively new singing group based in the West of Ireland with 15 members, including Mentor and Director Kathy Fahey. Its members are from a variety of musical backgrounds - Classical, Gospel, Jazz and all contemporary styles, and the group work with a 5-piece band which has a vast experience in accompanying all genres of music. They perform a wide range of music using close harmonies, and have chosen a very varied repertoire for this special intimate showcasing performance. They will open the concert with some Wedding Ceremony appropriate songs, followed by upbeat party/dance music. Harmonia was founded in 2008 under the baton of Musical Director Dr. Úna Quinn. Over the years the choir has grown in membership and experience and now comprises forty-five retired teachers from all over Mayo. Harmonia is a mixed choir of men and women whose aims include achieving a standard of excellence in choral singing along with creating a spirit of enjoyment and camaraderie among choir members. The 4-part choir has built up an extensive repertoire that ranges from the 16th century to modern day compositions and includes Church music, secular songs, American folk songs and Irish songs as Gaeilge. The choir has performed in Bealtaine concerts in Belmullet, Balla and Ballindine and participates regularly in the annual Mayo Choral Festival. This will be the third concert at the Linenhall. The choir has also entertained patients in Mayo hospitals at Christmas. Come and enjoy! Named after the villain from the classic ballad, Lankum is a fourpiece traditional folk group from Dublin, Ireland, who combine distinctive four-part vocal harmonies with arrangements of uilleann pipes, concertina, Russian accordion, fiddle and guitar. Their repertoire spans humorous Dublin music-hall ditties and street-songs, classic ballads from the Traveller tradition, traditional Irish and American dance tunes, and their own original material. Katie Moore - Entropy
Katie Moore is a visual artist based in Co. Mayo. Her latest work is an installation, Entropy. She says: “My work is very conceptually driven. Each process and action within the process is very considered. The materials I use are influenced by experiences in isolation and the theme I am working with. Human conditions such as empathy, isolation, trauma, loss, memorialisation are recurrent themes within my practice.” Katie graduated from GMIT Galway in 2015. She was Artist-in-Residence at the Jackie Clarke Collection, Ballina, creating the installation Paper Bloom and a limited edition publication. She created work for On Sight 2016 sculpture trail at National Museum of Ireland and for 186th Annual RHA Exhibition. Other residencies include A – Z West in California; 2×2 Part 2 at 126 in Galway; D.I.V.A at Electric Picnic; and A4 Sounds, Dublin. She received the Upstart Bursary from Mayo County Council Arts Office, with work at Mayo University Hospital, and had a solo show at the Custom House Studios in Westport in 2016. Adm. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 8th June - Saturday 14th July Mary Conroy - Ofrendas
Ofrendas is an installation of objects and images created after the death of Conroy’s sister. Upon her passing, her sister, also an artist, left a collection of objects and unfinished work in her studio. The task of ‘disposal’ of these objects fell to Conroy and after a long resting period the decision was made to burn them. Among these objects was Dia de los Muertos skull, a symbol used to honour the dead in Mexican culture. Conroy cast clay multiples of the skull and included them in the firings, creating new objects embodying traces of a previous life. “By using a familiar process, combining it with ceramic techniques and fuelling it with stories, cultural traditions and symbolic objects, this work reflects on the impermanence of life, the power of objects and the condition of death.” Mary Conroy’s practice explores humanity’s place within the natural world through sculpture, intervention, dialogue and imagery. Her work incorporates ceramics, installation, social practice and participation. She has a BA and MA from Limerick School of Art & Design and has exhibited in Ireland, the UK and Latvia. Adm. VISUAL ART: GALLERY Friday 20th July - Saturday 1st September Aideen Farrell - Showroom
Aideen Farrell is a Dublin-based installation artist whose practice explores the systems and physical structures that shape, represent, and impose order on our built environments. She uses a combination of found materials, wood, metal, wire and plaster casts to construct navigable contingent forms that break up and react to the existing spaces. Her work weighs the polished, fixed designs of architecture and urban planning against underlying conditions of precarity and collapse. Aideen is a recent graduate of the National College of Art and Design with a Degree in Fine Art Painting and Visual Culture, and is a member of Ormond Studios in Dublin. In 2017 she was awarded the Fire Station Graduate Sculpture Award, was highly commended in the Undergraduate Awards for her degree show work, and exhibited as part of the Catalyst Arts Centre Graduate Show, Symbiosis. The Cabinet of Wonders The Cabinet of Wonders is an ongoing curated visual art project presented in the foyer of the Linenhall. The project takes its inspiration from the fashion for Cabinets of Curiosities, which found their beginnings in the Renaissance and were still popular until the late 19th century. Inspired by the eclectic approach of the original collector-curators, it presents a range of works “to engage, intrigue, surprise and delight” delight”. Cabinet of Wonders #6 features works by a selection of contemporary visual artists: Declan Byrne, Michelle Colfer, Fiona Harrington, Dympna Heanue, Rebecca Lyons, Lisa Mc Lurg, Noel Molloy, Jane Queally, Fiona Reilly and Ian Wieczorek. VISUAL ART: FOYER/ BEALTAINE LAUNCH Tuesday 1st May - Saturday 26th May
HEARTH - Art for Older People at Home
HEARTH is a Mayo based arts programme for older people living in their own homes. It targets rural isolation through the medium of creativity. Participants are visited weekly by a professional artist/facilitator who introduces them to quality art materials, enables them to gain confidence and gradually build their own personal art programme at home. This exhibition includes art works by the HEARTH participants from Belmullet and Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo. HEARTH runs in Co. Mayo with the assistance of Pobal, the Department of Health, Mayo LCDC, the Healthy Ireland Fund and in association with Mayo Arts Service, Mayo Co Co. The opening will include speakers from the Hearth project and a presentation of the findings from the most recent run of the HEARTH. The HEARTH project has significantly impacted on positive mental health and social inclusion of vulnerable people. It is hoped that this run of the HEARTH project will develop into a feasible model for longer term mainstreaming of this initiative. Adm. Free OFFICIAL OPENING/BEALTAINE LAUNCH The official opening takes place on the 1st May, the start of Bealtaine and Mayo County Council Arts Service will launch its Bealtaine Festival Brochure for County Mayo as part of this event. Bealtaine is the national festival celebrating creativity as we age organised by Age & Opportunity. OfďŹ cial opening and launch will take place on the 1st May at 2.30pm. All welcome.

VISUAL ART: FOYER Wednesday 30th May - Saturday 23rd June Martina Faherty - Yell 2
Yell 2 is an exhibition of prints by Mayo artist Martina Faherty that explores themes of rebellion and letting go. Exhibitions of Martina’s work include a solo show at Custom House Studios, Westport, and groups shows at LORG Printmakers, Bridgewater Court printmakers, GMIT Diploma show, Mayo Artists Show, Ballina Library, Journeys at National Museum Turlough Park, Mayo General Hospital Arts Group, and also Lost Shadows 2 in Berlin. She has received Materials and Exhibition Assistance grants from Mayo County Council. Martina has a Diploma in Painting and Printmaking from GMIT Galway, and has been a member of Mayo Art Squad. Adm. An exhibition of paintings by service users of RehabCare in Mayo showcasing recent work in acrylic on canvas. “The Art Group comprises artists who have been painting and exhibiting for several years,” explains art tutor Emma Gallagher. “This summer’s exhibition is entitled Blàthanna and displays the wonder, energy and beauty of our floral world.” Adm. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: DRUMMING WORKSHOPS One World Drumming Workshops for Adults with Anthony McNamee Four Fridays from 18th May, 2.00pm-3.30pm Explore rhythms from around the world, using a whole range of drums and percussion instruments which are fun and easy to play. Learn some African and South American Rhythms, how to solo and play together as part of a large drumming group. Over the course of the workshop participants will combine the rhythms they have learned to construct a dynamic piece of drumming music. No previous drumming experience is needed. The One World Drumming workshop series is designed and facilitated by Anthony McNamee. Anthony is a freelance drummer and music educator experienced in a wide range of musical styles and settings. He has worked with dance companies, bands, arts festivals, schools, community groups and disability groups. An experienced recording artist and live drummer, Anthony maintains a busy teaching schedule. One World Drumming Workshops for Adults takes place over four Friday afternoons commencing Friday 18th May (continuing 25th May; and 1st & 8th June) from 2.00pm-3.30pm each Friday. HERE’S YOUR CHANCE: PRINTMAKING WORKSHOP EXPLORING PRINT-MAKING WORKSHOPS FOR BEGINNERS (ADULTS) with Elsa O’Reilly Four Mondays from 21st May, 10.30am-1.00pm Join us for an introduction to print making over four sessions as follows: Week 1: Getting to know the various tools and techniques involved in print-making; creating a monoprint using simple mark-making and textures. Week 2: Creating a design and learning the basics of relief carving in order to transfer that design onto a lino plate. Week 3: Focus on experimentation and the use of a traditional printing press. Week 4: Simple stencil making used in conjunction with print techniques already tested, to develop designs further, and to create a mixed media print or series of prints. No previous experience required, just a willingness to give it a go. All materials provided Elsa O’Reilly is a Mayo based textile designer with a great enthusiasm for all things print, pattern, colour and design. She has many years’ experience working in the fashion industry. Exploring Print-Making For Beginners Workshops for Adults takes place over four Mondays from 10.30am to 1.00pm commencing 21st May (continuing 28th May; and 11th & 18th June). CERAMIC WORKSHOP MEMORY BOX CERAMICS WORKSHOP FOR ADULTS with Mary Conroy Saturday 9th June 1.30pm-5.00pm Join artist Mary Conroy for an afternoon working with clay. The focus of this workshop will be on ‘slab building’ techniques, and printing and embossing on clay. Participants will each create an individualised ‘memory box’, and are invited to bring along small objects that have fond memories attached which they will use to stamp and create imprints in clay. A souvenir from a holiday, a trinket, a lucky penny, whatever is your fancy! Workshop activities will include creating templates, design layout, stamping and embossing, and manipulating, assembling and gaining an understanding of clay slab structures. Artist Mary Conroy will be on hand to guide the participants and share her skills as a ceramic artist. The workshop will include a tour of Mary’s exhibition Ofrendas (see p11). After the workshop the boxes will be taken away for firing and they will be available for collection at the Linenhall from mid-July. Mary Conroy is an artist whose work incorporates traditional ceramic techniques, social practice methodologies and innovative digital process. Her work has been shown in solo and group shows both nationally and internationally. She holds a Bachelor of Design and an MA in Social Practice and the Creative Environment from Limerick School of Art and Design. Memory Box Ceramics Workshop for Adults takes place on Saturday 9th June from 1.30pm-5.00pm including a short break. Cost per head for the workshop is €35. WRITING WORKSHOP WRITE AWAY Inishbofin Creative Writing School for Adults with Jean Tuomey Monday 27th August - Friday 31st August 2018 Back by popular demand, this hugely popular writing workshop returns for 2018. Taking place on the inspirational island of Inishbofin, WRITE AWAY is an exciting opportunity to write in an encouraging environment under the popular guidance of Jean Tuomey. This workshop offers a guided, supportive writing environment, and while the craft of writing will be touched on, it is not the primary focus of the course. It is especially suitable for first-time writers or those who have not yet experienced the positive atmosphere of a writing group, however all levels are welcome. The only requisite is enthusiasm. The course is under the guidance of Jean Tuomey, a teacher with over 20 years’ experience and a passionate enthusiasm for creative writing. Jean has trained as a writing facilitator with the National Association for Poetry Therapy in the US and has led many extremely successful writing projects for the Linenhall. You will need to bring a lunch with you each day and wear loose comfortable clothes that you don’t mind getting in a mess. Our Team of Workshop Facilitators
Marian McHale studied Fine Art at the National College of Art and Design and Galway Mayo Institute of Technology. Her medium of choice is paint, and she has many years experience working in the field of interior design. Jeni Roddy is a costume designer. She holds a Degree in Costume for the Performing Arts from London College of Fashion, and has worked extensively in this field including Wexford Festival Opera, Gate Theatre, Corn Exchange Theatre, and with performer Mario Rosenstock. Jeni has also worked in the field of performance art as a curator, performer and collaborator. Pamela Gray is an artist and illustrator. Her educational background includes a Diploma in Textile Design and an MA in Illustration. Her work has been exhibited in both solo and group shows, and she is a current member of the Linenhall’s Community Arts Team. Anthony McNamee is a freelance drummer and music educator experienced in a wide range of musical styles and settings. He has worked with dance companies, bands, arts festivals, schools, community groups and disability groups. An experienced recording artist and live drummer, his previous workshops at the Linenhall have been hugely popular. Edel McDonnell specialises in music education for children and has extensive experience working with children and facilitating workshops based on the Kodaly Method throughout the country. She a Masters in music performance and teaches in the Musicianship Department at Cork School of Music and on the BA in Early Childhood Care and Education in Cork Institute of Technology.
