Flowering June La floraison Though the linen flower only lives a few hours atop its supple stem, all flowers in a field do not bloom on the same day. This is what gives the landscape a delicate blue-ish color for a few weeks, moving like an impressionist sea in the wind.

Harvesting July L’ arrachage We don’t reap linen, we pull it up ! It is pulled up when the leaves have dropped off the bottom third of the stem. The plants are then placed in swaths of cloth (onemeter wide linen sheets) which give the field a graphic beauty. The capsules holding the seeds take on a brownish-yellow color.
JUILLET On ne fauche pas le lin, on l’arrache ! L’arrachage commence lorsque les tiges sont défoliées sur le tiers de leur longueur depuis le sol. Elles sont ensuite déposées en andains (nappes de lin d’une largeur d’un mètre) qui donnent aux champs une beauté graphique. Les capsules contenant les graines prennent alors une couleur brun-jaune.

Retting August Le rouissage The first phase of transforming the plant to fibers : Mother Nature takes over. Sun, dew and rain help detach the fibrous skin from the central wood, the stems take on a beautiful russet hue. Then comes the time for gathering.

Scutching Le teillage The second phase for mechanically transforming the plant into fibers : to use the linen fibers which surround the central wood, as a skin, it is necessary to separate them. Scutching, a specialized mechanical process, includes shelling, stretching, grinding and threshing. The sunny, sensual fragrances of cut grass and warm bread float in the air. Deuxième phase de transformation mécanique de la plante en fibre : pour exploiter les fibres de lin qui entourent le bois central, comme une peau, il faut les séparer. Processus mécanique spécialisé, le teillage comprend l’égrenage, l’étirage, le broyage et le battage. Flottent alors des effluves solaires et très sensuels d’herbe coupée et de pain chaud.

Combing Le peignage Combing is the preparation for spinning, a homogenization of fibers into soft, lustrous ribbons like ash blond hair.

Spinning La filature The third phase of transformation : from fiber to yarn. Untangle, regularize, stretch, thread fibers. The metric number (Mn) corresponds to the number of kilometers of yarn made out of 1 kilogram of fiber. The higher the figure, the thinner the yarn : from Mn1,8 for furniture fabric to Mn90 for an extremely fine handkerchief. For fashion, the standard is Mn26.
Troisième phase de transformation : de la fibre au fil. Démêler, régulariser, étirer, filer les fibres. Le numéro métrique (Nm) correspond au nombre de kilomètre faits avec 1 kg de fil. Plus le chiffre est élevé, plus le fil est fin : de Nm1,8 pour l’ameublement jusqu’à Nm90 pour un mouchoir extrêmement fin. Pour la mode, le standard est Nm26.

16th century – François I and his Camp of the Golden Draperies, Henri III and his Mignons ; the French Court launched codes of elegance for collared linen shirts, ruffs and garter belts in the finest, embroidered linen or rich lace edgings. An abundance of trinkets had their apogée at the Spanish court when oversized ruffs appeared. A luxury that provoked not a few downfalls !

In the 11th century, Hildegarde von Bingen, a Benedictine nun, mystic and musician already spoke of linen’s curing benefits for the skin and advised using linen compresses. Today, we can relieve allergies or resolve hyper-sensitive skin problems by wearing linen clothes or dressings and using creams with a flax oil base. Even the term “toilette” comes from toile (broadcloth - of linen), the only fabric suggested for use on the skin.

Jan Van Eyck (1390-1441) invented oil paint made out of … linen oil. Beginning in the 15th century, Venetian painters used canvas, it was then used in Flanders following Rubens’ influence. In linen, we use the fruit’s grains and then the stems for everything else. A linen plant is one meter of long fibers and one meter of roots which remain in the soil after the plant is pulled out to fertilize the ground for the next planting.

The Masters of Linen brand is awarded to CELC member weavers meeting criteria of European traceability, quality and creativity. The specifications include over 60% European yarn supply, strictly controlled. It is available for accredited mills and their clients, editors, designers, brands, providing product guarantee for the final consumer.
La marque Masters of Linen est décernée aux tisseurs membres de la CELC alliant traçabilité européenne, qualité et créativité. Le cahier des charges requiert des approvisionnements de fils européens à plus de 60%, strictement contrôlés. Elle est disponible pour les tisseurs certifiés et pour leurs clients, éditeurs, designers, marques, offrant ainsi une garantie produit au consommateur final.
