Portrait d’une génération

À partir de la question des mutations qui sera le fil conducteur sous la houlette du commissaire Michel Bouisson (VIA, Paris), l’exposition se donne pour objectif de présenter le travail d’une dizaine de designers précurseurs et chefs de file des différents courants de la nouvelle génération du design parisien, plus conscients de leurs responsabilités, s’écartant avec jubilation des sentiers battus et qui s’affirment dans des démarches réellement créatives et exploratoires.

L’exposition s’attachera à mettre en lumière, pour chacun, une problématique qui caractérise leur démarche actuelle, à travers 5 ou 6 objets, afin de dessiner au plus juste le portrait d’une génération : François Azambourg, Ruedi Baur, Matali Crasset, Delo Lindo, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Matthieu Lehanneur, Jean-Marie Massaud, Cellule Design EDF, R&D. Cette exposition a reçu l’appui financier du VIA (Valorisation de l’Innovation dans l’Ameublement), de la Ville de Paris, de Cultures France, de la Fondation EDF Diversiterre et du Consulat Général de France à Québec.

———— In the context of the 10th MONTREAL IN LIGHTS Festival which, this year features the city of Paris, the UQAM design center will present Paris / Design in Mutation.

Taking off from a question about mutation, the exhibition, under the direction of commissioner Michel Bouisson (VIA, Paris) has, as its connecting thread, the objective of presenting the work of ten designers, forerunners and leaders of different trends in Paris’ new design generation and more conscious of their responsabilities.

They veer off from beaten paths and affirm themselves by using truly creative, exploratory methods. For each designer, the exhibit attempts to highlight an approach which typifies their current work via 5 or 6 objects, defining, as closely as possible, the portrait of a generation : Francois Azambourg, Ruedi Baur, Matali Crasset, Delo Lindo, Jean-Louis Fréchin, Matthieu Lehanneur, Jean-Marie Massaud, Cellule Design EDF, R&D. The exhibition has received financial support from VIA (Validation for Innovation in Furniture Design), the City of Paris, CulturesFrance, the EDF (Electricity of France) Diversiterre Foundation, and France’s General Consulate in Quebec.

Un long « voyage bohème » se prépare dans les secrets de l’atelier, dans l’environnement minéral et aérien qui a vu les balbutiements d’un itinéraire artistique transversal porté par des « voyages intérieurs dans la matière et sa transformation », comme le dit si bien Sylvie Richoux, commissaire de l’exposition Sathal Creatures.

A long « bohemian voyage » will be prepared in the secrets of the workshop, a mineral, airy environment which saw the beginnings of a transversal, artistic itinerary drawn into « inner voyages to materials and their transformation », well said by Sylvie Richoux, curator of the Sathal Creatures exhibit.

Portrait of a generation

2009-2013 Fred, the Shaman, plants her magical universe’s decor in two locations, between fashion and art. An itinerant, two-headed odyssey revealing 20 years of fashion, investigations where the unconscious takes us all the way to vertigo.

« Yes, but not just any fabric. I transfigure it. I take woven fabric and wash, color, pigment and recycle it in a creative movement of weaving, embroidery and transformation… I make it my own. » She takes natural fabrics - linen, silk, leather and du Puy or Calais laces - and submits them to final « insults ».

Female Shaman

Over the years, something has settled in like an intuition, a gesture or even a certain truth. The Musée de la Mode exhibit’s scenography neither choreography nor based on a specific theme - is imagined as the first step of a « bohemian » voyage which will leave Marseille in 2009 and return in 2013.

My Cavern

Like a parallel universe, Fred Sathal invades the FRAC space and moves her workshop there. The Canopy of Heaven is a metal/fabric structure of linen, lace, yarns, sequins and glitter. Raw flax strands and textiles will undergo a metamorphosis « since raw materials awaken a desire to move on to the next world ».

Au fur et à mesure des années, s’installe quelque chose de l’ordre de l’intuition, du geste, jusqu’à la vérité. La mise en scène de l’exposition au Musée de la Mode - ni chronologique, ni thématique, est pensée comme la première étape d’un voyage « bohème » partant de Marseille en 2009 pour y revenir en 2013.

Comme un univers parallèle, Fred Sathal investit l’espace du FRAC, une transposition de son atelier. La Voûte Céleste, une structure métal / textile, lin et dentelles, fils, paillettes, sequins. Ici les mèches et les textiles de lin brut vont subir des métamorphoses, « car la matière brute réveille l’envie d’aller au-delà ».

Dédié à l’innovation Lin dans son ensemble, Linen Dream Lab rapproche industriels et créateurs. Fer de lance de la nouvelle stratégie de communication pro-active de la CELC, LINEN DREAM LAB est un support d’expérimentation des tissus et des matériaux techniques à base de lin, doublement destiné aux adhérents de la CELC et à l’ensemble des professionnels - prescripteurs, bureaux de style et designers mode ou déco.

For Summer 09, Vanessa Bruno launches a new line in airy linen knits, developed using an exclusive technology in a light, voile type knit.

A modern, natural material which, in her view, symbolizes warmth and sunshine. Focus on an extremely involved project.

Pour la partie textile : un team piloté par Marie Demaegdt, chef de projet Création et Produit à la CELC. Deux fois par an, Linen Dream Lab édite un cahier d’inspirations de la saison - Directions -, des pistes tendances et couleurs imaginées par Ornella Bignami du bureau milanais Elementi Moda. En sollicitant le savoir-faire des intervenants de la filière, l’Italien Daniele Aliverti, designer textile inspiré, a carte blanche pour imaginer une collection de tissus exclusifs CELC. Ces tendances CELC inspirent aussi nos adhérents dans leurs recherches et leurs créations. Tous ces tissus sont rassemblés dans une créathèque mise à disposition sur RDV personnalisé. Le lin se plie à toutes les envies. Mélanges luxueux, enductions techniques, mailles diaphanes ou cocons voluptueux, ces créations donneront lieu à des développements sur-mesure pour répondre aux rêves des créatifs les plus pointus.

Knits represent half the pieces in Vanessa Bruno’s collection. For Summer, she wanted a luxurious, breathable, light, sophisticated linen jersey, an evolution of the famous Scottish fiber always present in her lines. Why linen ? For its comfort and softness, its shine, its propensity to absorb dyes and its unquestionable environmental properties.

Also, the more it is washed, the more beautful it becomes.

Dedicated to the entire field of textile creation, Linen Dream Lab brings industrials and designers together : a team led by Marie Demaegdt, CELC’s Creation & Product Project Manager.

The spearhead of CELC’s new pro-active communications strategy, the LINEN DREAM LAB is a place for experimentation with linen fabrics, doubly targeting both CELC members and all industry professionals – decision makers, design offices and fashion or interior designers. Twice a year, the Linen Dream Lab edits an inspiration book - Directions - for the season with trend directions and colors conceived

by Ormalla Bignami of the Milan Elementi Moda office. In soliciting the know-how of industry experts, Daniele Aliverti, an inspired Italian textile designer, has carte blanche to imagine an exclusive CELC fabric collection. These trends also inspire our members in their research and creations. All the fabrics will be assembled in a creative library which can be visited by appointment. Linen gives in to all desires. Luxurious blends, technical coatings, diaphanous knits or voluptuous cocoons, these creations open the way to larger-than-life developments that answer the dreams of the trendiest designers.

Résultat de nombreuses mises au point techniques entre son tricoteur et son filateur tous deux français, cette maille de lin exclusive s’inscrit dans l’excellence au patrimoine de la maison. Côté environnement, la production est 100% locale : les pièces sortent des ateliers de Marmoutier et Troyes, capitale de la bonneterie française. Elle sera déclinée en version côte / jersey tubulaire pour des débardeurs très échancrés, et en version rectiligne pour des t. shirts à manches courtes et col danseuse. En vert tilleul, jaune d’or, ocre rouge, curry, blanc, noir : la gamme chromatique épicée évolue en parfaire harmonie avec les couleurs fortes de la collection principale.

Un lancement appuyé par une scénographie autour de la bobine de fil de lin, à retrouver en février dans toutes les vitrines de la marque.

Et un nouveau succès annoncé pour cette créatrice passionnée d’art contemporain qui se dope à l’énergie des grandes villes et qui s’apprête aussi à commercialiser une ligne « capsule », plus sophistiquée, en attendant l’ouverture de trois nouvelles boutiques au Moyen-Orient et en Chine.

A result of numerous technical adjustments between her knitter and her spinner, both French, this exclusive linen knit is inscribed in the excellence of the company’s heritage. Regarding the effect on the environment, production is 100% local : done in workshops in Marmoutier and Troyes, the French knitting capital. Garments will be developed in a ribbed/tubular knit for fitted tank tops and a cut-andsew knit for short-sleeved T-shirts with dancer necklines. In lime green, yellow gold, red ochre, curry, white and black… a spicy range evolving in perfect harmony with the main line’s strong colors.

The launch will be backed up in February in the company’s store windows by displays featuring spools of linen yarn. More success is also in the works for this designer passionate about contemporary art, who takes energy from the world’s big cities and will soon market a more sophisticated, capsule line in anticipation of three upcoming boutique openings in the Middle East and China.

———— Monica Bagnari tourne résolument la page en ouvrant, en lieu et place de son restaurant le 360°, un nouvel endroit qui se veut accueillant comme une maison et stylisé comme un film de Jacques Tati. Le projet Home - tel est son nom - a été complètement repensé par les architectes milanais Luca Rossire et Riccardo Salvi. Comme dans une maison, les différentes zones évoluent, depuis l’entrée, par un jardin intime vers un salon, offrant tous deux un sas de repos, pur antidote au stress urbain. Pour se rendre dans les salles à manger, il faudra traverser une véranda à la lumière filtrée par des voiles de lin, où la grande baignoire semble vous murmurer que les frontières entre privé et public sont rayées de la carte. Une carte qui s’attarde sur une cuisine italienne raffinée et délicate servie sur des nappes en lin de la maison Rivolta Carmignani. Un havre de paix gourmand en plein cœur de la capitale de la mode et du design italiens.

———— Lee Cooper a cent ans. Pour cette 3e collection en collaboration, Lou Doillon a imaginé le vestiaire d’une militante active. Ses tenues sont chipées aux hommes, plus particulièrement à l’univers du “workwear” avec une touche très féminine. D’inspiration années 50, la collection est un mélange détonnant de délicatesse et de force et se décline en denim et chambray, bien sûr, mais aussi en lin et en coton - lin. Les tonalités sont tranchées et évidentes, rose corail, gris, bleu délavé ou bleu gris.

Pièce phare, la combinaison de mécano devient combi-short, avec deux grand zips sur le devant, ponctués du détail du lien marteau sur le coté.

Bonne nouvelle, la collection été 09 flirte avec le chic urbain et s’adonne au lin. Les couleurs sont épicées : safran, cumin, paprika et lumineux fenouil déclinées en unis, carreau façon madras ou rayure. Côté matières, cotons légers et lins pour des cargos et des pantalons à pinces de l’époque Clark Gable. ———— With the subliminal image of a smoldering Brando strolling On the Waterfront, and directly following the workwear wave that unfurled on summer’s runways, the Dockers brand has become an essential must-have for masculine wardrobes. Good news, the Summer 09 collection flirts with urban chic and is devoted to linen. Colors are spicy : saffron, cumin, paprika and luminous fennel are worked in solids, madras plaids or stripes. ———— Monica Bagnari resolutely turns the page by opening, in the location of her « 360° » restaurant, a new homey spot styled like a Jacques Tati movie. « J’ai toujours été attiré par la fibre et le fil. C’est pour moi le premier état, le degré 0 de la matière; si on enlève le fil, il n’y a plus rien. » Ce qui frappe au premier abord, c’est l’enthousiasme, la passion, l’authenticité. Dans l’atelier perché dans un immeuble de banlieue, partout des maquettes, traces sensibles d’un travail qui s’inscrit dans la matière avec la fibre pour fil conducteur, « quelque chose qui donne une écriture aux objets », un toucher sensuel.

La fibre ne vient pas de l’industrie mais du textile, lié au mouvement, au confort, au vêtement, elle sait être décorative, ornementale, tout ce qu’on demande aujourd’hui. Pour écrire sa modernité sans perdre de vue les richesses fournies autour de lui par la nature, François Azambourg s’est pris au jeu de l’univers du lin, en visitant ses champs, ses teillages, ses hommes qui rendent ses projets possibles, une filière européenne investie et dynamique, consciente que le lin, matière ancestrale aux vertus multiples et reconnues, s’inscrit pleinement dans l’innovation et la modernité.

Le lin, il le travaille depuis un an, pour ses qualités de confort, ses hautes performances identiques à celle de la fibre de verre, l’impact environnemental en moins. Quand Frédéric Morand de Design Composites Solutions le contacte, il ne lui faut pas plus de cinq secondes pour l’entraîner dans l’aventure des fibres naturelles appliquées à la création de meubles. Les machines existaient, il suffisait de les adapter. Pourquoi le lin ? Le lin est plus léger que la fibre de verre, peu gourmand en énergie, offrant « un maximum de résistance pour un minimum de matière ». Une découverte excitante bénéficiant du bagage du végétal, local de surcroît, un potentiel dont on ne voit pas le fond et qui donne aujourd’hui naissance à une collection de mobilier Lin 94 à la ligne enlevée, doublement légère et recyclable (table, chaise, fauteuil, plateau et étagères).

Cet ingénieur, comme le surnomme Giulio Cappellini, reste fidèle à sa technique de sandwich, une mousse recyclée habillée de fibres lin positionnée dans un moule où l’on injecte de la résine Polyester, « même si l’idéal serait une mousse de maïs, du lin et une résine PLA (résine d’origine biologique biodégradable).

Et de rêver à des objets où la fibre de lin resterait brute sur des zones non traitées. Et pourquoi pas des circuits imprimés en forme de napperon, « dans des usines où les ouvrières n’étant plus exposées à la fibre de verre ne ressembleront plus à des cosmonautes » ! Le clivage entre industrie et artisanat tombe. Avec le carbone, on ne peut pas aller bien loin au fond : difficile de rêver et de ramener à des préoccupations domestiques des matières destinées à la NASA ou à la F1.

Visible sur le stand de la Confédération Européenne du Lin et du Chanvre pendant Maison & Objet, la collection est dévoilée dans sa totalité au Salon meuble Paris en janvier, dans le cadre de son exposition rétrospective, 57 Pièces, sur une tribune de 150 m2, « rien que du plaisir ». Une occasion de montrer les coulisses de son travail, « pleins de trucs anciens », des luminaires, des chaises, les mallettes Hermès, des maquettes, des protos, des échantillons. « Ce qui m’intéresse le plus, c’est le parcours », confie-t-il dans un clin d’œil, avec le regret de quelques projets qui n’ont pas vu le jour, comme cet hôpital à Marseille, qui devait accueillir la rénovation du secteur des soins palliatifs, pensé autour d’un jardin japonais pour le bien-être des malades et de leur famille. « Un hôpital a beaucoup de mal à comprendre quand on lui dit « vous allez devoir engager un jardinier ».

Azambourg has been working with flax fibers for the past year. Their comfort qualities and high performances are identical to glass fibers … but don’t impact the environment. When Frédéric Morand from Design Composites Solutions contacted him, Azambourg was quickly drawn into the adventure of creating furniture out of natural fibers. The machines existed, they just had to be adapted.

Why Flax? Flax is lighter than glass fiber and doesn’t require much energy, it offers « maximum resistance for a minimum of material ». An exciting discovery that benefits from today’s focus on vegetation-derived products and locally available raw materials. Flax’s potential with its endless possibilities gave birth to a furniture collection Lin 94 (table, chair, armchair, tray and shelves) with spirited lines that is half the weight and is also recyclable.

The « engineer », as Giulio Cappellini affectionately calls him, remains faithful to his sandwich technique : recycled foam covered with flax fibers put in a mold and then injected with polyester resin « though the ideal mix would be a corn, linen and PKA resin foam ». In imagining items with untreated areas where the material stays raw. And why not circuit motifs in the shape of doilies « made in factories where workers, no longer exposed to glass fibers, don’t look like astronauts anymore ! » The gap between industry and crafts has been narrowed.

In any case, not much more can be done with carbon, it is difficult to use materials for home products that are destined for nasa or Formula 1 car racing.

The collection, shown at CELC’s Maison & Objet stand, will also be totally exhibited at meuble Paris fair in January in a 150 square meter stand, retrospective exhibition called 57 pieces that is « all about pleasure ». ———— Au commencement, déjà l’excellence dans cette Maison dédiée aux étoffes de luxe, créée dans la région de Milan par le patriarche de la famille Benigno Crespi (1777-1854) alors âgé de 20 ans.

Aujourd’hui, la 7e génération fait désormais partie du club très privé des « Hénokiens », une association internationale de sociétés indépendantes toujours gérées par leur famille fondatrice et qui comptent toutes deux siècles d’existence.

Présentée sur Première Vision, la collection été 2010 est une invitation aux vacances à l’italienne dans quatre régions emblématiques : première escale, San Remo, célèbre pour ses fleurs, avec des tissages légers et des teintés-fils dans des tons frais et éclatants - orange, jaune, vert, turquoise - tourbillonnent dans une atmosphère romantique. En poussant vers le sud, nous arrivons à Ostuni, une station de la région de Brindisi, perchée sur 3 collines. Ses murs d’enceinte blanchis à la chaux lui donne l’aspect de villages grecs. Blancheurs mates, au look vintage pour des crêpes lavés, des lins polis par le sable et le vent, usés, métallisés. Cap vers l’ouest et la Riviera toscane, un petit Saint-Tropez verdoyant et son ambiance « marineros ». Les jeux de rayures des marinières se retrouvent en bleu et blanc ou bleu et rouge sur des linscotons, parfois stretch, délavés par le sable et le vent. Pushing south, we arrive at Ostuni, perched on three hills in the Brindisi area. Its white limestone walls are reminiscent of a Greek village and inspire mat white, faded vintage crepes and worn, sand or wind-polished metallic linens. We head west to the Tuscany Riviera for a bit of Saint Tropez green and a « marinero » mood. Professor Ignass VERPOEST of K.U.Leuven’s Metallurgical and Material Engineering Department presents the latest advances of his research on composite materials, already used in the transportation industry.

For the past ten years he has directed a group of 25 people who develop uses for natural fibers like hemp and silk as well as coconut and, of course, flax. «These are interesting fibers for their unusual mechanical properties, especially their rigidity and resistance», he explains enthusiastically. It appears that the best fibers - flax and hemp - are comparable in rigidity with glass fiber, while being half as dense. Flax, a champion of materials, is distinguished by high rigidity, between 60 and 75 GPa (the measuring unit for restriction or rigidity) compared with 72 GPa for glass fiber.

Conduisant depuis dix ans un groupe de 25 personnes, son travail porte sur l’utilisation de fibres naturelles comme le chanvre, la soie, mais aussi le coco et bien sûr le lin. « Des fibres très intéressantes par leurs propriétés mécaniques hors pair, en tout premier lieu pour leur rigidité et la résistance obtenue », nous explique-t-il avec enthousiasme.

Il est apparu, en effet, que les meilleures fibres, lin et chanvre étaient comparables, côté rigidité, à la fibre de verre tout en présentant une densité moitié moindre. Le lin, champion en la matière, se distingue par sa très haute rigidité - entre 60 et 75 GPa, l’unité légale de contrainte ou rigidité, contre 72 pour la fibre de verre. « Pour des applications où le poids du produit est primordial, l’avantage est de taille », renchérit Ignaas Verpoest. « Sans oublier pour autant leurs performances écologiques, naturellement ». Des composites qui s’offrent des débouchés dans l’industrie du transport concernant déjà des pays comme la France, l’Allemagne et la Belgique.

Pour aller plus loin, les recherches s’accélèrent vers des composites d’origine 100% renouvelables, entre autres à base de protéines de blé, ce qui annoncerait à court terme le remplacement de la fibre de verre /polyester par des composites 100% naturels et en plus biodégradables à base de lin.

Le matériau chanvre est également intégré dans le projet de loi sur les bio-matériaux dans le Bâtiment, adopté par l’Assemblée Nationale le 21 octobre 2008. CELC - Skipper professionnelle, journaliste, désormais chargée de mission pour le Ministère de l’Ecologie : un nouvel engagement pour une nouvelle vie ?

C.C - J’ai arrêté la compétition en 2002. Avoir vécu la course au large pendant dix ans a aiguisé ma sensibilité à l’état des lieux de la planète. Pas si simple d’imaginer un bateau propre avec toutes les problématiques liées : gestion des déchets, énergie, matériaux ! Dans mon parcours de journaliste, à travers des documentaires pour France 5, ou les Chroniques du Développement Durable pour Europe 1, je me suis intéressée à la thématique « en général ». Au fond, ce qui m’intéresse ce sont les solutions. Aujourd’hui, nous sommes devant un changement de société, une crise financière doublée d’une crise environnementale.

Avec un fort potentiel de belles idées, un fourmillement, l’imagination des hommes en marche. Pour les mettre en œuvre, il fallait être un peu contraint. Il faut repenser la manière de naviguer, s’interroger pour privilégier les petites embarcations, par exemple.

CELC - Pouvez-vous nous présenter les enjeux du projet NavEcoMat ?

C.C - L’idée, c’est de faire, dans les trois ans qui viennent, la démonstration que l’on peut trouver une alternative économique viable à la fibre de verre et à la résine polyester. Un matériau compostable en lin / PLA* (des pistes étudient d’autres fibres naturelles comme le chanvre ou l’ortie). L’IFREMER travaille aussi sur des bactéries issues des grands fonds marins ou des austers (herbes marines) aux caractéristiques mécaniques intéressantes.

CELC - Quels sont vos partenaires ?

C.C - L’Université de Bretagne Sud pilote les recherches et Plasmor est porteur du projet. Avec Jean-Marie Finot, le plus grand des architectes navals (gagnant des Vendée Globe), un convaincu ; à la conception, IFREMER teste les éprouvettes, et Alstrom se charge de la transformation du lin. De mon côté, je m’occupe de la communication via mon association, Reporter Bleu.

CELC - Quels projets Lin retiennent votre attention ?

C.C - Au salon Nautic, on a vu beaucoup de projets très intéressants.

Catherine Chabaud, 45 ans, skipper professionnelle et journaliste engagée, auteur de deux livres, est la première femme à réaliser un tour du monde en solitaire sans escale et en course, lors du Vendée Globe Challenge, en 1996-1997. Depuis mai 2008, en mission auprès de Jean-Louis Borloo, Ministre français de l’écologie, elle prépare les ports de plaisance à un accueil exemplaire en matière de Développement Durable, avec une action d’envergure dès l’été 09, et traque l’empreinte écologique des bateaux.

CELC - Selon vous, le lin est-il une ressource pour une construction nautique « durable »?

C.C - Le lin est le meilleur support possible pour un composite.

Je crois beaucoup à son avenir. Plus tard, j’aimerais changer de métier, produire du lin, pourquoi pas… Les choses avancent assez vite ! C’est un véritable débouché pour la filière lin et une véritable alternative aux fibres issues de la pétrochimie.

Catherine Chabaud, 45, a professional skipper, dedicated journalist and author of 2 books, is the first woman to do a solo, non-stop tour of the world in a boat race during the 1996-1997 Vendée Globe Challenge. Since May 2008, she has embarked on a project with Jean-Louis Borloo, France’s Ecological Minister, familiarizing boats arriving in France’s marinas with Sustainable Development. This wide-reaching action will, as of Summer 09, trace each boat’s ecological imprint.

CELC - Quelles sont les actions que vous envisagez en 2009 pour sensibiliser les chantiers, les architectes et les équipementiers sur l’impact environnemental des procédés de fabrication ?

C.C - Chaque partenaire est engagé dans un processus de communication. Pour ma part, j’animerai un colloque début avril, sur le thème « Nautisme et Développement Durable », dans le cadre de ma mission au Ministère de l’Ecologie, auprès de Jean-Louis Borloo.

CELC - First a professional skipper, then a journalist, now responsable for a project with France’s Ecological Ministry : a new commitment for a new life ?

C.C - I stopped competing in 2002. Ten years of racing at sea sharpened my awareness to the current state of the planet. It is not simple to imagine a clean boat because of all its innate problems : managing waste, energy and equipment ! In my path as a journalist, through documentaries for France 5 or Europe 1’s Chronicals of Sustainable Development, I became interested in the «overall» theme. Basically, what interests me are solutions. Today, we are faced with a change in our society, a financial crisis doubled by an environmental crisis. With a strong potential for wonderful ideas and a wealth of imagination, mankind will, however, move forward. To put this into work, it is necessary to have a certain restraint, rethink how we navigate, suggest the possibility of having smaller boats, for example.

CELC - Could you tell us about the NavEcoMat project’s challenges ?

C.C - Over the next three years, the idea is to demonstrate that we can find a viable economic alternative to glass fiber and polyester resin, for example, a compostible flax material – PLA* (other natural fibers like hemp or nettles are also being studied). IFREMER also works on bacteria from the ocean depths or austers (ocean herbs) with interesting mechanical characteristics.

CELC - Who are your partners ?

C.C - L’Université de Bretagne Sud pilots the research and Plasmor sponsors the project. Jean-Marie Finot, the greatest naval architect (a Vendée Globe winner), is convinced as well. For the conception, IFREMER monitors the test tubes, Alstrom transforms the flax and I handle communication through my association, Reporter Bleu.

CELC - What Linen projects capture your attention ?

C.C - At the Nautic trade fair, we saw a lot of interesting projects.

CELC - Do you think linen is a resource for a ‘sustainable » nautical construction ?

C.C - Linen is the best possible ground for a composite. I believe strongly in its future. Later, I would like to change my profession and produce flax, why not … Things move forward so quickly ! This is a real outlet for the flax industry and a true alternative to fibers derived from the petro-chemical industry.

CELC - What are the actions you envision in 2009 to help make shipbuilders, architects and component manufacturers aware of the environmental impact of fabrication procedures ?

C.C - Each partner is involved in a communication process. For my part, I will chair a conference in early April on the theme « Water Sports and Sustainable Development » as part of my responsibilities with Jean-Louis Borloo, the Ecological Minister..

Le Pacifique à la rame 100% fibres végétales ——— A l’origine du projet un double défi.

Traverser le Pacifique à la rame en 2009 sur un bateau 100% fibres végétales.

En 2006, Patrick Favre, skipper chevronné, termine deuxième de la première « Rames Guyane », une traversée de l’Atlantique à la rame, 47 jours en solitaire. Il veut tenter le Pacifique. François Rougier, architecte naval, lui présente Florent Girard de la société mopelia (Rougier Ingénierie et la société mopelia collaborent depuis plus d’un an sur le développement du lin composite dans le domaine nautique). Deux des acteurs étant bas normands, le choix s’est naturellement tourné vers la fibre de lin, aux propriétés très intéressantes dans le remplacement de la fibre de verre pour des matériaux composites. Florent Girard répond à nos questions.

CELC - Comment vous appuyez vous sur les professionnels de la filière lin ?

F.G - La filière lin possède un important savoir-faire en vue d’une utilisation textile. Les études et les travaux en cours au sein de notre regroupement d’industriels, sous l’impulsion du Conseil Régional de Haute - Normandie, montrent de très intéressantes valorisations de cette fibre dans le domaine technique. Les synergies avec les professionnels de la filière lin sont donc cruciales en vue d’un développement d’une filière lin technique.

CELC - Quel est votre principal vecteur d’innovation dans ce projet ?

F.G - C’est la synergie entre des industriels (producteurs, peigneurs, tisseurs et mise en œuvre des composites) avec des centres de recherche et de développement. Prenant ainsi en compte les propriétés des fibres, la mise en œuvre et le vieillissement du matériau obtenu dans le temps.

CELC - Avez-vous déjà utilisé le lin pour d’autres applications nautiques ?

F.G - Nous avons développé une planche de Wake Skate dans le domaine de la glisse. Pourquoi ce type de produit me direz-vous ?

Car sa taille très faible (moins de 1m sur 0,5 m) nous a permis de tester mécaniquement le composite à base de lin en milieu réel et de pouvoir appréhender son vieillissement en milieu marin.

At the origin of the project, a double challenge. Row across the Pacific Ocean in 2009 in a boat made of 100% vegetation fibers. In 2006, Patrick Favre, an experienced skipper, finished second in the first « Guyana Row », rowing across the Atlantic alone in 47 days. Now he wants to attempt the Pacific. CELC - How do you get support from linen industry professionals ?

F.G - The linen network possesses significant know-how in the textile area. Studies and ongoing projects within our industry, under the impetus of the Haute - Normandie Regional Council, show interesting uses of this fiber in technical areas. Synergies with linen industry professionals are crucial in terms of developing a technical linen network.

CELC - What is your principal vehicle for innovation on this project ?

F.G - The synergy between industry players (producers, combers, weavers, composite makers) and research and development centers.

We also take into account the fiber’s properties, the implementation and aging of the material obtained over time.

CELC - Have you already used flax for other nautical applications ?

F.G - We developed a Wake Skate board in the glide sport area.

Why this type of product, you might ask ? Because its small size (under 1 by 0,5 meters) allowed us to mechanically test the flax-based composite in a realistic environment and anticipate its lifespan in the nautical environment.

———— C’est autour d’une même passion, la voile, qu’une équipe d’ingénieurs et d’architectes, navals associés à des industriels, ont créé Karver.

L’entreprise basée à Honfleur fournit les bateaux de la Coupe de l’America en poulies et emmagasineurs. Leur dernier-né ? une poulie à base de compound de lin injectable (fibres de lin techniques intégrées à une matrice PLA), « un matériau issu de ressources renouvelables doublement moins impactant pour l’environnement car, ici, il est local », souligne Nicolas Malandain, chef du projet. La fibre de lin nécessite lors de sa production beaucoup moins d’énergie que le mylar ou la fibre de verre, très gourmands en électricité.

The company, based in Honfleur, furnishes boats for America’s Cup with pulleys and storage. Initiée par le skipper Régis Garcia, la conception d’un voilier en fibres de lin s’inscrit dans une logique de performance et de respect de l’environnement. Avec pour objectif la participation à des courses au grand large, le navigateur donne l’impulsion à un projet innovant. Explications de l’architecte naval Julien Marin.

CELC - La R&D est au cœur de l’activité de votre bureau d’étude.

Pour la conception d’une coque de class 40 à base de Lin, quelle est l’orientation principale de vos recherches?

J.M - L’orientation des recherches concerne tout d’abord la caractérisation des fibres de lin en terme de résistance en flexion, compression & tension, puis la définition des caractéristiques globales du panneau balsa/lin tel que défini pour les bordés du bateau. Ce travail a été effectué avec la collaboration soutenue de la société Linéo et du C.I.P.A.LIN (Comité Agricole Français). Enfin, l’étude des comportements en fatigue et aux chocs du panneau balsa/lin doit permettre de valider l’utilisation du lin dans une application dynamique exigeante. L’ensemble est directement lié au process de fabrication des panneaux, développé en partenariat avec le chantier CDK Technologies ; il nous est donc nécessaire de poursuivre les recherches entamées par nos propres tests auprès de l’Université de Lorient.

Cela vise à réduire toutes les approximations entre théorie et application. Cette recherche en laboratoire est accompagnée d’une démarche de suivi, en cours de construction puis tout au long de la vie du bateau. On peut évaluer à deux saisons de course en Classe40’ le temps nécessaire pour recueillir les informations suffisantes pour dresser un bilan définitif quant à l’utilisation du lin pour la construction de voiliers de course au large.

CELC - Le composite à base de lin est-il pour vous un matériau d’avenir applicable aux bateaux de course ?

J.M - Il l’est, dans la mesure où la fibre de lin est mise en concurrence avec la fibre de verre, car leurs caractéristiques spécifiques sont très proches. Mais le domaine de la course n’est pas tout, la fibre de lin peut apporter une réponse efficace à divers niveau, pour des unités de tailles inférieures, pour la plaisance, la voile légère et les sports de glisse. La fibre de lin est également une réponse très intéressante dans le développement des composites biodégradables ; de nombreuses recherches vont dans ce sens, c’est à mon avis le plus grand bénéfice à en tirer dans les années à venir. La fibre de lin est la seule fibre, aujourd’hui, qui allie les caractéristiques mécaniques du verre et la possibilité de réaliser du composite biodégradable.

CELC - R&D is at the heart of your research consultancy.

To conceive a Class 40 hull with a flax base, what is the principal direction of your research ?

J.M - Our research orientation characterizes flax fibers in terms of flexion, compression & tension resistance, then we define the overall characteristics of the balsa/flax panels for the boat’s sides. This work was done with the support and collaboration of the Linéo company and C.I.P.A.LIN (the French Agricultural Committee). Finally, the study of fatigue reaction and shock to the panels will validate using flax in a demanding, dynamic way. Everything is directly linked to the process of manfacturing the panels, developed in partnership with CDK Technologies shipbuilders : it was important to continue the research begun by our tests with Université de Lorient. This reduces our estimates between theory and application. The laboratory research was accompanied by follow-up, construction and check-ups during the boat’s life. We evaluate it over two Classe 40’ racing seasons, the time necessary to gather sufficient information to set up a definitive balance sheet for using flax to construct off-shore racing sailboats.

CELC - For you, is a flax-based composite a material for the future, applicable to racing boats ?

J.M - It is, where flax fiber competes with glass fiber, since their specific characteristics are close. But racing is not the only area, flax fiber can bring an efficient answer at different levels, for smaller leisure boats, light sailboats and glide sport equipment. Flax fiber is also an interesting answer in developing bio-degradable composites ; much research is concentrated on this direction. In my opinion, this will be the biggest benefit in the years to come. Flax is the only fiber today which links the mechanical characteristics of glass and the possibility to realize bio-degradable composites.

———— Le groupe NavEcoMat poursuit des travaux portant sur la fabrication de rouleaux de mats de lin (Alstrom) sur une matrice en PLA (avec UBS et Plasmor), entièrement biodégradable. Les premières pièces attendues au premier semestre 2009 seront des sièges de kayaks et des éléments d’aménagement du Triaskell, dernier bateau sorti des chantiers de Plasmor et disponible dès février 2009. Un éco-progrès plébiscité par un public de randonneurs nautiques.
