What an unusual experience for a designer to be able to master the very creation of a raw material ! What could be more natural for me, as a Dutch woman, to choose flax, a fiber with a unique identity and endless creative possibilities ! The « Flax (Lot Gz59 – West) » exhibit at Zeeuws Museum sums up the unique Christien Meindertsma by / per Roel van Tour

character of this exercise. A flax that I planted and harvested myself, helped me design every day, easy-to-live-with objects. A closeness that is, at the same time, cultural, sensual and maternal !

Che esperienza insolita per una designer poter controllare anche la creazione della sua materia prima ! E’quanto di più naturale per una olandese come me scegliere il Lino, fibra autentica e supporto inesauribile di creatività ! L’esposizione “ Flax (Lot Gz59 – West) ” al Zeeuws Museum riassume il carattere unico del progetto. Un Lino che ho potuto seminare e la cui raccolta mi ha permesso di immaginare oggetti familiari e facili da vivere.

Petit h grows up ——— by valérie leboucq

Creating on-off objects out of workshop remnants is the concept behind Hermès’ new line which, after just one year, has made a considerable impact.

Its unusual approach offers new ideas to the iconic French luxury brand.

We met with creative director Pascale Mussard and one of the collection’s wizards, Brazilian designer Gustavo Lins.

Creare oggetti unici a partire dagli scarti e dai ritagli di un atelier è il concetto di questa nuova linea di Hermès che si è imposta nel giro di un anno. La sua visione originale apre nuove prospettive per il marchio iconico francese del Lusso. Incontro con la direttrice artistica Pascale Mussard e con uno dei geni del marchio, il creatore brasiliano Gustavo Lins.

A doorstopper made from a Kelly bag handle and a block of Saint Louis cristal. Hanging lamps constructed from teapots, a small animal in colored leather… There is a touch of Lewis Carroll in Pascale Mussard’s office but nothing with the quirkiness of Alice in Wonderland. Just a desire to have fun, view objects differently and “ not take things too seriously ”. The Pantin workshop where she creates “ poetic, unidentified objects ” for the ‘ Petit h ’ line looks more like a hardware store than the cave of Ali Baba. Everything has its place : shoeboxes full of buckles and clasps, a huge wardrobe of “ damaged ” scarves and silk squares (with pulled threads or imperfect motifs). Elsewhere on long shelves lengths of cashmere not used in the collections await a spark of inspiration, a “ designer’s watchful eye ” as Pascale puts it, which turn them into unique creations. Nothing is wasted at Hermès. As a girl, she played in the treasure-filled wardrobe of her great-grandmother who never threw anything away. Later, as a new recruit at Hermès, she noticed how leather craftsmen cut watchbands out of handbag scraps. This was Upcycling before its time ! “ Here we seek imperfection, the task one sets oneself using skill and imagination is to create a new, perfectly finished object, worthy of its heritage, that will stay beautiful for 25 years ” she says. Alongside other artists and designers like Godefroy de Virieu, Gilles Jonneman or Alice Cozon, Brazil’s Gustavo Lins is one genius behind this “ re-creative ” operation supported by a half-dozen craftsmen.

Un fermaporta costituito da un manico di borsa Kelly e da un blocco di cristallo Saint Louis, sospensioni luminose costruite utilizzando teiere, un mini-bestiario di cuoio colorato... Lewis Carroll e Pascale Mussard hanno punti in comune. Ma il mondo di Pascale Mussard non è così strano e inquietante come quello del padre di Alice nel Paese delle Meraviglie. C’è solo la voglia di giocare, di volgere uno sguardo differente e leggero sulle cose in generale.

A Pantin, l’atelier, nel quale immagina gli “ oggetti poetici non identificati ” della gamma “ Petit h ”, assomiglia più al negozio di un venditore di colori che alla caverna di Ali Baba. Tutto è al suo posto : scatole per scarpe con le fibbie e i fermagli, un grande armadio con pile di sciarpe e foulard in seta “ fallati ” (filo tirato, disegno imperfetto). Lunghi scaffali con metri di cachemire “ fuori collezione ” aspettano la scintilla, lo “ sguardo amorevole del creatore ” come dice Pascale, che ne farà dei pezzi unici. Niente si perde da Hermès. Quando era piccola, giocava già con l’armadio pieno di tesori della sua bisnonna che conservava tutto. Più tardi, appena arrivata da Hermès, vide come gli artigiani pellettieri tagliavano i cinturini degli orologi negli scarti di cuoio delle borse.

L’upcycling era già alla moda ! “ Cerchiamo l’imperfezione, una macchia che sarà trasformata con astuzia e fantasia per creare un nuovo oggetto perfettamente finito, degno della sua firma e che rimarrà bello per 25 anni ” spiega Pascale. Al fianco di altri creatori e designer - Godefroy de Virieu, Gilles Jonneman, Alice Cozon - il sarto brasiliano Gustavo Lins è uno dei geni di questo lavoro di “ ri-creazione/ricreazione ” con il contributo di una mezza dozzina di artigiani.

Figlio di chirurgo e architetto di formazione, fervente ammiratore del lino, ha imparato a controllare le tecniche di sartoria osservando le tavole di anatomia di suo padre. Ha conservato il gusto della precisione e del dettaglio. Come per il chimono che ha trasformato senza pietà, per “ Petit h ”, lavora sui “ frammenti ” di abiti : il collo, le maniche, il risvolto. A partire da due strisce di pelle di coccodrillo tagliate in polsini e da un metraggio di seta, immagina uno scialle bolero. Un lungo collo di cuoio con una fodera in seta o in cachemire diventa uno scamiciato. Un occhiello e un pezzo in pelle che mirano a mascherare un difetto di stampa, strutturano il grande foulard che si drappeggerà attorno al collo senza bisogno di annodarlo. “ E’ come l’acquerello, bisogna lavorare velocemente, non ritornare indietro e non essere troppo cerebrale ”.

The son of a surgeon, trained as an architect and an unconditional fan of linen, he learnt tailoring from observing his father’s anatomical drawings. From these beginnings, he has retained an appreciation of precision and an attention to detail. Such as, the kimono he ruthlessly deconstructed. At ‘Petit h’, he works on what he refers to as clothing “ fragments ” : a collar, a sleeve or a lapel. Here he turns two strips of crocodile skin, cut as cuffs, plus a meter of silk into a bolero shawl. Here a long, silk or cashmerelined leather collar becomes a jumper dress. Or a buttonhole and leather swatch hides a printing error to structure a giant square that drapes around the neck untied. “ It’s like watercolor : you have to work fast, never go backwards and not think too much ”.

A living fashion legend of the 60’s and 70’s, designer Valentino chose Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli to succeed him when he retired from his label. We meet with the two designers, special guests at Pitti Uomo in January 2012

Some brands follow fashion. Others escape from its dictates to create luxury with elegant perfection. Valentino is a reassuring label which has contributed to updating a notion of timelessness.

In this style, linen plays a role with its noble touch.

Leggenda vivente della moda degli anni 60 e 70, il creatore Valentino ha scelto Maria Grazia Chiuri e Pier Paolo Piccioli quando ha lasciato il suo marchio. Incontro con due designer, ospiti speciali di Pitti Uomo a gennaio 2012.

Valentino Garavani, who created his fashion house in Rome in 1959 and Giancarlo Giammeti, who joined him a year later as director, both retired in January 2008. In 2007, they handed over responsibility to Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli who had both been designing the brand’s accessory lines since 1999. As creative directors of ready-to-wear, haute couture and the younger R.E.D. line, the designers have created a modern line which alludes to the label’s couture origins. They have adapted the Valentino style to the modern lives of their contemporary clients. We met them in the sumptuous Valentino salons on the Place Vendôme. the journal about linen and hemp ~ When did you begin working together ? m.g.c. : I worked in Florence for the second line of Fendi, Fendissime, and brought Pier Paolo into the company when we needed another designer.

Ci sono marchi che seguono la moda e altri che la fuggono a favore della elegante perfezione del lusso. Valentino fa parte di quelle firme rassicuranti che hanno contribuito a lanciare la moda dello stile intramontabile. Uno stile che permette al lino di esprimersi con nobiltà.

Valentino Garavani che aveva creato la sua Maison a Roma nel 1959 e Giancarlo Giammetti che l’ha raggiunto un anno più tardi alla direzione generale, hanno lasciato nel gennaio del 2008. Questo duo ha ceduto il posto a Maria Grazia Chiuri e a Pier Paolo Piccioli nel 2007, che creavano già nel 1999 con Valentino le linee di accessori della Maison. Alla direzione artistica delle collezioni di prêt-à-porter, di alta moda e della giovane linea Valentino R.E.D., questi due designer immaginano una collezione moderna ma fedele alle origini del marchio. Si tratta di uno stile adattato alla vita di una clientela rinnovata. Incontro nei sontuosi saloni Valentino di Place Vendôme.

jalh ~ Who does what when you work together ? m.g.c. ~ I think what we have in common is a good sense of analysis. We are capable of imagining each product, but can also think of the Valentino project overall as a collection. We have a communal vision of the brand.

jalh ~ How would you define the Valentino style today ? m.g.c. ~ We want to update the brand’s values with a more contemporary direction for a woman who has changed since the era of Monsieur Valentino. Before, one could define a Valentino woman or a Chanel woman, they rarely moved from one brand to another.

Today they are freer, they like to mix labels. p.p.p ~ We evolve the Valentino style towards a more modern beauty. Today, everything is more personal and individual. To be elegant is no doubt the most fashionable thing you can do. In the 60’s, Valentino was very innovative. Today it is more important to be provocative.

sflc ~ Quando lavorate insieme, chi fa cosa ? m.g.c. ~ Ciò che abbiamo in comune è una buona capacità di analisi. Siamo in grado di immaginare ogni prodotto ma anche di interpretare il progetto globale Valentino e il senso della collezione.

Abbiamo una visione comune del marchio.

jalh ~ How do you see this house in 20 years ? m.g.c. ~ Oh ! We would like it to be as big as Chanel (laughs) ! I like the impact that type of global label generates.

jalh ~ Come definireste lo stile Valentino di oggi ? m.g.c. ~ Vogliamo solo attualizzare i valori del marchio, con una direzione più contemporanea, per una donna che è cambiata dall’epoca del Signor Valentino. Prima si parlava di una donna Valentino o di una donna Chanel, ma che passava raramente da un marchio all’altro. Le donne oggi sono più libere, a loro piace mescolare i marchi. p.p.p ~ Facciamo evolvere lo stile Valentino verso una bellezza più moderna. Oggi, i prodotti sono più personali, individuali. Essere elegante è senza dubbio la cosa più alla moda che si possa fare. Negli anni 60, Valentino era molto innovativo. Oggi, bisogna essere più provocanti. jalh ~ Come vede questa Maison tra 20 anni ? m.g.c. ~ Oh ! Vorremmo che questa Maison fosse grande come Chanel (risa) ! Il potere che può creare un marchio globale come questo mi affascina.

Composite flax and hemp solutions ——— Electric scooter [01] This prototype is an electric scooter equivalent to 125 cc and the ek’O structure and body panels consist of 15 parts compared to the 50 used in a conventional scooter. Besides being easier to construct, it delivers a weight saving of around 20%. The chassis is composed of two panels made of a flax fiber/tannin resin composite. The suspension arm is also reinforced with flax fiber.

The eco-mobility challenge ——— The sustainable transport market is particularly interested in the advantages of natural fibers. By 2015, all motorized two-wheeled vehicles, electric cars and other light vehicles must meet European directive 2000/53 which requires 85% of an automobile’s components to be recyclable and 95% to be recoverable. Besides optimizing recyclability, flax and hemp fibers offer a substantial weight gain to finished products, reducing energy consumption.

These natural fibers can replace glass fibers because they have the same mechanical qualities plus they have better vibrations and noise absorption qualities.

Linen conveys important symbolic values. It is synonymous with nobility, history and is typical of European style – relaxed and chic !

sflc ~ Più precisamente, quali sono le loro aspettative ? si & ys ~ La materia deve essere piacevole da portare in qualsiasi stagione, di facile manutenzione e deve invecchiare e abbellirsi con l’andare del tempo e con l’uso, prova della sua qualità. Il lino federa e porta avanti importanti valori simbolici. E’ sinonimo di nobiltà, di storia, emblematico di uno stile europeo – disinvolto e elegante.

jalh ~ Over the years, we see in the Vlas Blomme collections that linen knits have always been important si & ys ~ From the beginning, we regretted the almost total absence of linen knits and jerseys in the readyto-wear market. We wanted to make a supple sweater that could be worn everyday. Yoriko Sakurama, Vlas Blomme’s designer developed an entirely handmade collection of linen knits : a first in Japan.

Perfecting our linen jersey, a technical challenge, took three years of research and tests. The “ brushed ” version developed for the winter collections retains heat perfectly and has a beautiful hand.

sflc ~ Nel corso delle collezioni, una constatazione: per Vlas Blomme, la maglia di lino è sempre messa in evidenza. si & ys ~ Fin dall’inizio, deploravamo una quasi assenza del lino lavorato a maglia e del jersey di lino sul mercato del prêt-à-porter. Avevamo l’idea di un pullover morbido, da portare nella vita quotidiana. Yoriko Sakurama, stilista di Vlas Blomme, ha sviluppato la nostra collezione in maglia di lino, interamente fatta a mano : un’innovazione in Giappone.

La messa a punto del nostro jersey di lino, vera sfida tecnica, ha richiesto tre anni di ricerche e di prove. La sua versione “ garzata ” elaborata per le collezioni d’inverno conserva perfettamente il calore e la mano piacevole.

jalh ~ Following the recent, dramatic events, Japan had to lower electricity consumption by almost 15%, a trend which may increase. si & ys ~ In winter, the Japanese people now try to maintain indoor temperatures between 18 and 20°C. We have long analyzed the heat-regulating qualities of linen. Unlike synthetic fabrics, it doesn’t irritate the skin. With linen we needn’t worry about getting over-heated, perspiring or itchiness. Abbiamo lungamente analizzato la qualità termoregolatrice del lino, che non provoca fastidio alla pelle, contrariamente ai tessuti sintetici. Con il lino, non ci sono problemi di “ surriscaldamento ”, di traspirazione o di prurito. Gli articoli di lino e di cachemire di qualità sono stati testati nel catalogo Autunno-Inverno 2011 : l’interesse è stato immediato !
