Flax thrives in the temperate and humid oceanic climate of an area that stretches across a 90,000 hectare wide* coastal belt, from Caen in France to Amsterdam. The human hand is crucial to the process. When flax is harvested, it is not cut but pulled out of the ground, so as to preserve the full length of the fibres contained in its stalk. In June-July, when a third of the lengths of the stalks have lost their leaves, they are pulled and then laid on the ground in swathes (layers of flax one meter long).

The first processing phase – retting – is natural.

The alternation of rain and sunshine (from July to September) and the combined action of micro-organisms and bacteria naturally present in the soil ensure the fermentation needed to separate the textile fibres from the woody part of the stalk. The fibres are then extracted from the stalk’s external envelope, and the wood at the centre of the stalk is removed (the shive).

L’alternanza della pioggia e del sole (da luglio a settembre) e l’azione congiunta di microrganismi e di batteri presenti naturalmente sul terreno assicurano la fermentazione necessaria per separare le fibre tessili dalla parte legnosa della pianta. Le fibre vengono in seguito estratte dal fusto e liberate dal legno ancora presente (le anas).

After harvesting, the long roots that have remained in the ground fertilise the soil and make it healthier, thereby giving flax its reputation as an excellent break crop. Renewed in rotation every 6 to 7 years, flax farming naturally produces optimal soil quality, thereby increasing returns on the following crops from 20 to 30 % more.

Dopo il raccolto, le lunghe radici rimaste nella terra fertilizzano e bonificano il suolo conferendo al lino la sua condizione di eccellente supporto nella rotazione dei raccolti. The next step, scutching, is an entirely mechanical process that takes place throughout the year. During this process the two types of fibre are separated: the long fibres (line flax) and the short fibres (the tow), as well as the by-products, including the shive.

The flax plant grows fast: sowing takes place between 15 March and 15 April and the plant takes 100 days to reach maturity.

The flowers bloom in June. The plant consists of a single stalk about a meter high, from which 80 to 100 leaves sprout, and of equally long roots. The production of flawless long fibres and the exceptional mechanical qualities of European flax fibre are the fruit of expertise that is recognised worldwide.

The flax seed industry is a real centre of excellence that benefits farmers. The volumes and quantities of seeds produced – all GMO free - meet almost all of European producers' needs. In France, for instance, certified seeds are controlled by the official control and certification service (Service officiel de contrôle et de certification) that guarantees the very high level of germination with an average rate of 96.1%, whereas the rate set by the certification standard, already very high, is 92%.

La filiera delle semenze è un vero polo di competenze al servizio degli agricoltori. I volumi e le quantità delle semenze, tutte prodotte senza OGM, coprono la quasi totalità del fabbisogno degli agricoltori europei. It requires neither irrigation nor defoliant, and stores carbon. From an environmental perspective, these characteristics make flax a remarkable plant. A generous plant, and useful right down to its roots, flax produces no waste. Long fibre, short fibre, seed and shive: every part of the plant is used for a number of purposes.

During its growth, the flax plant absorbs the CO2 released into the atmosphere. One hectare of flax retains 3.7T/Ha of CO2 annually. On a European scale, this equates to 450,000 TEQ of carbon avoided annually. This contribution to the reduction of GGEs – Greenhouse Gas Emissions – meets the requirements of the European Union and of the Common Agricultural Policy, which promotes a more competitive and greener Europe.

The soils’ resources are sufficient to feed the plant, which needs little nitrogen and cultivating - it requires very little input (fertilisers and phytosanitary products) to preserve its natural resistance.

Compared with cotton, flax requires five times less input.

Growing flax thus contributes to preserving the quality of rivers and groundwater.

Grown in countries with a temperate climate, flax – contrary to most natural or cellulose fibres – requires no irrigation other than natural rain*. The annual water savings, on a European scale, are estimated at 850,000 million cubic meters of water, the equivalent of the water consumption of a town the size of Antwerp.

Flax fibre is used for textiles, paper, matting; flax seeds and oil, for varnishes, linoleum; shive for gardening, insulation, litter; dust for compost etc. Each part of the plant is used.

Today, flax fibre is also an ideal material for developing high performance bio-composites for technical purposes, in the construction, automotive and sports equipment industries.

Flax is a hollow fibre, which explains its ability to breath in summer and its insulating quality in winter. In summer, linen can even be worn as a very light knit without being too warm.

In winter, it retains the heat. Whether used on its own or mixed with other fine natural fibres such as wool, alpaca, cashmere or silk, it allows for the creation of top-range fabrics that combine the qualities of the materials used and are warm.

Linen is the strongest natural textile fibre: it’s long lasting without pilling or losing its shape. It is lightweight and one of its mechanical properties is its high tensile strength, a benefit exploited in the production of carpets.

The production of a wide range of linen innovations is meeting the demands of sophisticated entertaining: embossed or damask, embroidered or printed, linen can accompany any meal, whether every day or a special occasion.

Using heavier yarns than for clothing, or blended with nylon, linen provides long lasting covers for armchairs, sofas and chair seats.

Not only does flax fibre absorb shock better than glass fibre, its inelasticity makes its rigidity comparable to that of both glass and carbon fibre. Many products have already been developed in the field of sports and leisure (tennis rackets, bicycles, mountain bikes, helmets, skis, etc.). Thanks to the excellence of the fibre processing, from plant to yarn, Europe's flax industry is now a laboratory of ideas and innovations. Since the end of quotas on Chinese textile exports, on 1 January 2005, 70% of global textile production takes place in China. Yet Europe has maintained and developed its lead in terms of quality.

Even so, 80% of European flax production is currently being exported to China, usually post scutching. A gradual relocation of the processing stages could occur in the future. As one of the major challenges for a sustainable economy is the reduction of global carbon emissions, the volumes of goods in transit will need to be reduced.

European spinning is rigorous and has bred the development of new textile knitting processes and innovative technical uses. In China, hackling, spinning and weaving are carried out by local workers using a variety of different industrial procedures and produce textiles with a quality / price ratio in line with mass market consumer expectations.

Tuttavia ad oggi l’80% della produzione europea di lino è esportata in Cina, generalmente dopo la stigliatura. Una tendenza verso una rilocalizzazione degli stadi di trasformazione della fibra sarà possibile nel corso dei prossimi anni. In effetti, se una delle scommesse maggiori dell’economica sostenibile risiede nella riduzione delle emissioni di carbonio a livello planetario, i volumi trasportati dovranno quindi essere ragionevoli.

Circular and flat-bed knitting, or lace, it is present in everything in our wardrobe. New linen piqué or sweatshirt fleece are on offer alongside outdoor, stretch, and reversible linen… the result of many years of research with European spinners, weavers and knitters.

Flax is beginning to be used for technical products and could become a major agro-resource for eco-innovation. From industrial innovations to eco-design, flax has a visionary potential outside of its traditional uses. Flax fibre offers unique properties, which are ideal for eco-friendly high-tech products made from agromaterials and bio-composites.

Noble, spirited, creative Linen has survived through time and trends; it can adapt to the seasons and the creative mood. For stylists and textile professionals, linen is easy to work with: it is easy to dye, can easily be blended with other fibres, and lends itself to customisation!

Often seen on catwalks, linen is the perfect answer for responsible fashion, echoing the principles of slow fashion. MANUTENZIONE: Materiale nobile ed autentico, il lino è lavabile a mano o a macchina con un detersivo neutro.

Per il candeggio è consigliabile utilizzare prodotti a base di agenti ossigenati al posto della candeggina (il lino ingiallisce se non risciacquato immediatamente). Il lino bianco si lava fino a 95° e quello colorato a 40° o 60°.

Una centrifuga moderata per evitare la formazione di pieghe, l’asciugatura naturale o in tamburo, la stiratura del capo a rovescio ancora umido, permettono di conservare le proprietà di questa fibra lunga senza deformazioni né formazione di pelo, ma che invece migliora con i lavaggi.

Una vera rivoluzione: il lino lavato non necessita di stiratura!

La sua rigidità equivale a quella del vetro e a 1/3 di quella del carbonio, ma se prendiamo in considerazione la densità, il lino presenta migliori prestazioni della fibra di vetro. Inoltre, osservando in particolare la rigidità in torsione, le qualità della fibra di lino si avvicinano a quelle della fibra di carbonio”.

Designers are attracted by flax fibres’ qualities similar to those of glass fibre. Linen shives are used for manufacturing lightweight and very dense particle boards, perfect for partitions, door carcasses and work tops. Using a vegetable based adhesive, they guarantee healthy and acoustic insulation of a high environmental quality.

CARE INSTRUCTION : For a noble and original fabric like linen, correct care is very important. Hand or machine-wash with a neutral detergent. For whites, use oxygenbased products rather than bleach (as linen can go yellow if not rinsed immediately). The most resistant and natural of fabrics, white linen can be washed at 95°C, and colour at 40°C or 60°C. Spinning on a low speed avoids creasing, drying naturally or in a tumble drier, and ironin damp on the inside will all ensure that the qualities of the long flax fibres are maintained without pilling or losing their shape. In fact linen will even improve and soften with age and washing.

Many linen-based anti-static soft furnishings can be vacuumed or drycleaned. And - revolutionary!

- pre-washed linen needs no ironing!

“Flax fibres are natural polymers”! In stiffness, they are equal to glass and of about a 1/3 of carbon, but when the density is taken into account, flax performs better than glass fibre. And, when looking at the specific stiffness in bending, the values of flax fibres approach those for carbon fibres.”

Economie importanti dalle risorse naturali Le innovazioni tecniche si affidano a una fibra di qualità eccellente, base per la resistenza dei materiali compositi e del prodotto finito. La fine annunciata dei prodotti a base di petrolio induce a privilegiare l’utilizzo di fibre naturali come il lino. I biocompositi a base di lino rappresentano già in Europa un’economia annua di 50.000 teq di petrolio. L’industria automobilistica prende in considerazione i materiali naturali per la produzione di parti in sostituzione della plastica. Riciclaggio ottimizzato, rigidità e leggerezza, riduzione del peso, rispetto dell’ambiente sono i molteplici vantaggi della fibra (dovrebbe permettere di raggiungere gli obiettivi ambiziosi del 95% di riciclabilità di una vettura entro il 2015).

Fonte di ispirazione per costruzioni per bio-architettura e eco-design Le fibre di lino attirano i designer per le loro caratteristiche simili alla fibra di vetro. Le anas del lino entrano nella produzione di pannelli di frammenti leggeri e molto solidi, perfetti per tavolati divisori, anima per porte o piani di lavoro. Incollati con dei leganti di origine vegetale assicurano un isolamento sano ed acustico di alta qualità ambientale.
