DEPARTMENT OF ACCOUNTING ANNUAL REPORT | Spring 2016

From the Department Head Dear Friends, The Spring 2016 Annual Report highlights this past year’s accomplishments and activities in the University of Cincinnati’s Department of Accounting. This year was a time of great change and activities – and we want to share a few of them with you.

Our accounting programs grew to over 900 majors. This includes around 100 MS Accounting students and over 50 students in our online MS Tax and Tax Certificate programs. Our programs are also gaining national recognition: U.S. News & World Report ranked our MS Tax as the #1 Public Online MS Tax Program in 2015, and #2 in 2016. The 2015 Public Accounting Report ranked our MS Accounting Program #8 and our Undergraduate Program #13 for its size faculty.

The annual Fall recruiting Meet the Firms Night in the Alumni Center had close to 200 students talking with recruiters from almost 40 different organizations, including all medium and large public accounting firms in the Cincinnati area. Thanks go to Beta Alpha Psi, their advisor Molly Rogers, and Lindner career services for all of their hard work.

In December we held the 48th UC Income Tax Conference at the Duke Energy Center in downtown Cincinnati – and it was again a success with 300 people attending.

With lots of retirements and the growth of the accounting programs, we made major faculty recruiting efforts. Please look at the names, pictures and brief bios for 4 new tenure-track faculty and 4 new Educators who started Fall 2015. We also welcomed a new part-time Administrative Assistant, Susan Stringer. We recruited again this year, and 3 additional new tenure-track faculty and 1 annual Educator start Fall 2016. Except for filling the Geis Chair with a person to lead the PhD program, the accounting faculty is finally close to full strength.

 Study Abroad  Beta Alpha Psi

newfaculty Mark Bell, MBA, CPA, Assistant Professor-Educator of Accounting Mark graduated Miami University with a BS in Accountancy and his MBA is from the University of Maryland. He is a CPA and worked a dozen years in accounting, including for KPMG LLP, Thomson Newspapers, and Baltimore Gas and Electric Company. He taught the entire accounting curriculum teaching at Miami University as a Visitor or while Accounting Department chair at Mount St. Joseph University. At UC, Mark teaches Financial Accounting and Not-For-Profit and Governmental Accounting. A native of Pittsburgh, he enthusiastically supports the Steelers.

Erik Boyle, PhD, CPA, Assistant Professor of Accounting Erik completed his PhD in Accounting at the University of Utah in 2015.

He is a CPA with a BS and MS in Accounting from Brigham Young University. He was an auditor for 3 years with KPMG. His primary research interests revolve around 3rd party perceptions (e.g., management, audit committees, jurors, etc.) of auditors/auditor decisions.

His dissertation examines the impact of industry norms on management perceptions of audit quality under ambiguous accounting guidance. He taught Auditing several times during his doctoral program, and at UC teaches Auditing and Fraud Examination.

Raqule Crawley, MS Accounting, CPA, Assistant Professor-Educator of Accounting Raqule is a Lindner Honors Plus graduate from the University of Cincinnati, where she earned her BBA and MS in Accounting. She is a CPA and worked four years in Audit for Deloitte & Touche LLP. For the past 7 years she worked at Procter & Gamble in various accounting functions, most recently as a Senior Cost Analyst for Febreze. Raqule is a member of the Ohio Society of CPAs and was part of the P&G African Ancestry Leadership Network. She teaches Financial Accounting at UC.

Brian Goodson, PhD, CPA, Assistant Professor of Accounting Brian graduated with his Accounting PhD from the University of Mississippi in 2015. He earned his MBA with a focus in Accountancy and his BBA in Accountancy from Troy University. He is a CPA and worked in Audit at Ernst & Young, LLP for two years. His primary research interests relate to judgment and decision-making issues in auditing and financial accounting; and he currently focuses on how auditor reporting influences investment decisions and judgments of auditor negligence. At UC he teaches the capstone course in the MS Accounting program and Auditing.

newfaculty Elizabeth Kohl, PhD, Assistant Professor of Accounting Elizabeth completed her Accounting PhD at the University of Connecticut in May 2015. She earned her MBA at the University of Oregon and her BBA in Finance at Texas A&M University. Elizabeth worked as an auditor in public accounting for four years with the Houston, Texas, office of UHY (now BDO USA). Elizabeth is interested in empirical, economics-based research emphasizing sustainable reporting, voluntary disclosure, labor, crowdfunding, managerial accounting, and sport. Her forthcoming article in Critical Finance Review is titled, Corporate Sport Sponsorship and Stock Returns: Evidence from the NFL. Elizabeth teaches Managerial and Cost Accounting at UC Paul Ordyna, PhD, JD, CPA, Assistant Professor of Accounting Paul completed his PhD at Purdue University in 2015, and he earned his JD and MS in Accounting from the University of Mississippi. He is a CPA and worked for over 6 years in accounting, including experience with PricewaterhouseCoopers LLC, Comcast Cable Communications, and Alpine Health Products. His research interests include financial accounting, capital markets, corporate disclosure, litigation risk, bankruptcy and tax. Paul’s dissertation was titled: Voluntary Going Concern Disclosure and Bankruptcy Planning. He has other working papers that explore corporate tax structure, tax professional effort and financial reporting quality. Paul teaches Taxation courses, and Estate and Gift Tax Planning at UC. Aaron Pennington, JD, CPA, Assistant Professor-Educator of Business Law & Accounting Aaron earned his JD at the University of Tennessee and his BBA and MS in Accounting at the University of Georgia. He is a CPA and worked 4 years in accounting, including Audit with Deloitte & Touche LLP. For the past 5 years he was Assistant Professor of Accounting and Law at York College of Pennsylvania where he taught Business Law, Auditing, Financial Accounting, and Managerial Accounting. Aaron is active in the Academy of Legal Studies in Business. At UC he teaches Business Law and Financial Accounting.

Whitney Westrich, JD, Assistant Professor or - Educator of Business Law Whitney graduated from Miami University with a BS in Business Management and she earned her JD from the Salmon P. Chase College of Law. Whitney was In-House Counsel for Luxottica for 11 years. For the past 3 years Whitney taught Law part-time both live and online for UC’s CECH-Paralegal Studies Program. She teaches several undergraduate and graduate level Business Law courses for Lindner.

Laughs, hugs, tears, and memories were shared during the Accounting Department’s annual Retirement, Recognition, and Student Awards Banquet held on March 17th at the University of Cincinnati Alumni Center. Professor Dave Burns, Professor Joe Burnett, and Professor Tim Sale were honored and lauded for their tireless contributions to the University and for being an integral part of the Accounting Department’s success. The three beloved professors have served UC for a combined total of over 129 years.

“We want to honor and recognize their accomplishments, years of service, and contributions to the Lindner College of Business” said Rob Larson, Head of the Department of Accounting. “I have very much appreciated their wisdom, support, and friendship.“

retiree& honorees David C. Burns, Ernst and Young Professor of Accounting received his MBA and DBA degrees from Indiana University and his BBA degree from the University of Cincinnati. He served on the faculty at UC for almost 40 years. Prior to joining the faculty at UC, Professor Burns served on the faculty of the Department of Operations Research and Administrative Sciences at the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California.

Professor Burns also served as Invited Lecturer on the faculty of the Bank Administration Institute School for Banking for 12 consecutive years during the summer sessions of 1980-91.

At UC, Professor Burns served as advisor or co-advisor of Beta Alpha Psi, the accounting student honorary fraternity, for more than 20 years. During 5 of these years he organized and participated in a student Jazz Band that performed on the annual Beta Alpha Psi Riverboat Cruise. Professor Burns also served as President and student advisor of the UC Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma for more than 15 years. Beta Gamma Sigma is the premier academic honorary fraternity in the business arena.

Professor Burns’ primary research interests focus on the areas of auditing, internal control, audit risk assessment and professionalism in the accounting arena. He co-authored the 9th Edition of the Auditing Standards and Procedures textbook with Arthur Holmes. He also coauthored three auditing cases that facilitated the classroom use of 9th Edition textbook as well as other competing auditing textbooks.

Professor Burns published articles dealing with his research interests in many journals including: The Accounting Review, Auditing: A Journal of Practice & Theory, Journal of Accountancy, Internal Auditor, EDP Auditors Journal, Internal Auditing, Accounting Historians Journal, Ohio CPA Journal, Government Accountants Journal, Journal of Bank Accounting and Auditing, and the CPA Journal.

Professor Burns was principal investigator on two Office of Naval Research Grants. He also served as co-investigator along with Horton Sorkin and Steve Mar on a research project sponsored by Bank Administration Institute and the Institute of Internal Auditors. This research project resulted in the publication of a monograph dealing with auditing EDI and open network controls. Professor Burns served as either Editor or a co-editor of Internal Auditing for 18 years

retiree& honorees Professor Joseph (Joe) Burnett, MBA, CPA has been with UC over 40 years. He joined the Accounting Department in September 2011 as an Assistant Professor of Accounting. In 1975 Joe began teaching in UC’s University College in their Business Technologies Department, and in 2003 joined the Hospitality Management program in the College of Applied Science and later the College of Engineering and Applied Science. He earned a BBA and MBA from the University of Cincinnati and an honorary MA from Brown University. He has been practicing as a CPA since 1975 with over 100 small business clients. He served as the production accountant for a 2013 movie, "Easy Rider, the Way Back". He also served for one year as the MS in Taxation Academic Program Director.

Teaching interests are financial accounting, managerial accounting, Income tax and hospitality management, and his research interest is in taxation.

Professor J. Timothy (Tim) Sale has served on the UC faculty for over 50 years and is a Professor of Accounting and Information Systems, the Norwood C. Geis Fellow, and a Senior Fellow at Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria.

He previously served on the faculty at The Ohio State University. Dr. Sale has articles published in leading American and European accounting journals including The Accounting Review, Accounting and Business Research, Management Accounting, CA Magazine, Cost and Management, Journal of Accountancy, Journal of Accounting and Business Finance, and Artificial Intelligence in Accounting and Auditing. He also co-authored a monograph entitled Financial Control of Divisional Capital Investment published by The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants in England. He has been Editor of Advances in International Accounting since 1998.

His teaching interests include: managerial accounting, financial accounting, systems analysis and design, international accounting, and consolidated financial statements.

Dr. Sale was honored as the Outstanding Educator in International Accounting by the International Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association in 2011 and was given the President’s Award for Exemplary Service by the Ohio Region of the American Accounting Association in 2010.

He has also been either chairman or a committee member on 49 doctoral dissertations in the Department of Accounting and the Lindner College of Business. In 1970 he earned the first PhD in Accounting given by UC, where he had previously earned his BBA and MBA.

Outstanding accounting students were also recognized for their hard work and dedication at the Accounting Department’s annual Retirement, Recognition, and Student Awards Banquet. Numerous awards and scholarships were awarded to our students.

Students, faculty, and department friends were able to visit with each other over a delicious meal and enjoy a slideshow presentation featuring the department’s newest faculty and staff. Dr. Larson gave a warm welcome to the group and shared a video titled, “The Importance of Accounting.”

studyabroad Did you know that more than 300 Lindner students study abroad each school year?

On these trips (led by college faculty) students learn first-hand through lectures and discussion with leading academic and professional experts, company visits and cultural sightseeing: Queretaro, Mexico (April 30 - May 8, 2016) Doing Business in Mexico was a great success. The trip was led by Professor Margaret Reed assisted by Paul Ordyna.

The group visited five businesses while in Mexico including Crown Equipment Company (headquartered in Ohio), Rancho El Milagro, Freixenet, Ole Language Academy and Sayer Lack.

Santiago & Concepcion, Chile Buenes Aires, Argentina Rio de Janeiro & SĂŁo Paulo, Brazil (March 12 - April 14, 2016 ) Professor Rick Warne was faculty assistant for the Spring 2016 Lindner Honors-PLUS trip to South America.

This group was led by Professor Jeri Ricketts and Professor Susan Sadlier.

From Agora to Unilever—the group visited a total of 26 businesses while in South America. The students also attended classes at the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago and also visited their campus in Concepcion.

studyabroad London, United Kingdom (March 18 March 27, 2016 Accounting Professor Molly Rogers was the faculty assistant to Professor Catalin Macarie on an inaugural student program to study UK’s economy. The program included 24 freshmen and sophomores who attended a class prior to spring break to study the economic policies, taxing regulations, and UK’s upcoming vote on the European Union.

Once in the UK, the student visited some UK startup companies, attended lectures on UK’s economy, the Bank of England, and toured and visited with UC’s former Assistant Dean, Marianne Lewis.

New Cairo, Egypt (March 20 - March 24, 2016 Professor Erik Boyle was part of a crossdisciplinary group of faculty from the University of Cincinnati who participated in the university’s partnership program with Future University in Egypt (FUE).

As a visiting faculty member at FUE, he taught undergraduate accounting classes, conducted research seminars, and advised research assistant faculty on their current research projects. In turn, select students at FUE will have the opportunity to visit UC during the summer to engage with students and faculty on campus. This partnership provides a great opportunity for collaboration between these two institutions of higher learning. Professor Boyle stated, “I’m grateful for the chance to represent UC!”

betaalpha psi The University of Cincinnati Beta Alpha Psi (BAP) chapter hosted, along with the University of Dayton, the BAP regional meeting on April 1st and 2nd. BAP is an Accounting, Finance and Information Systems honor organization. The April meeting hosted over 50 regional chapters in competitions on presentations on chapter operations, student mentoring, and record keeping. UC’s chapter did an outstanding job of hosting and facilitating this two-day event.

During the school year, BAP conducts networking events with CPA firms and local businesses to further advance our students. In the fall, BAP hosts an annual Meet the Firms Night which brings over 40 employers and over 200 students together for a night of elevator talks, co-op opportunities and resume sharing.

BAP also conducts weekly meetings with local firms such as Deloitte and Touche, Ernst & Young, KPMG, PwC, Grant Thornton, Fifth Third Bank, Macys, American Financial Group, Inc., Western & Southern Financial Group, and many more. Students learn proper interviewing and job search skills at these meetings.
