Welcome from the Co-Chairs Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is an honor to welcome you to tonight’s extraordinary 150th Anniversary Gala. Since 1869, the San Francisco Dental Society has been committed to promoting the oral health of the community and elevating the dental profession in the City and County of San Francisco. On September 4, 1869, several San Francisco dentists met for the first time to discuss forming the first dental association in California. The San Francisco Dental Association (later renamed the San Francisco Dental Society) held its first formal meeting on September 11, 1869, with the bylaws accepted and signed on October 3, 1869. These early SFDS members, including the first president Calvin C. Knowles, knew that an association would help foster communication among dentists, share the most up-to-date technology and science, and help establish a standard for the profession. It is in this spirit that the SFDS has conducted business for the past 150 years. We are excited to have you all with us this evening to celebrate not only the past 150 years, but also the present and the bright future of our profession. Thank you to everyone who has made tonight possible, including and especially the diligent 150th Anniversary Steering Committee members and our SFDS staff who have worked for the past year to make tonight a reality. Today, the SFDS is a vibrant, thriving local component of the American Dental Association and the California Dental Association, with over 1,000 members and over 800 student members. President’s Message Dear Friends and Colleagues, It is my profound honor to welcome each and every one of you to our night of celebration, a huge milestone for all of us. The San Francisco Dental Society has long been recognized as the leader in oral health for the City and County of San Francisco. We’re now 150 years old! As we reminisce about the past and look forward to our future, it becomes obvious that the key component of our success is our “people”. Our San Francisco Dental Society members and staff are the heart and soul of our society and the cornerstone of our strength, longevity, and relevance. Our dental society is tightly woven into the very fabric of San Francisco. We maintain close relationships with a number of agencies including the San Francisco Department of Public Health, the San Francisco Unified School District, and both dental schools, UCSF and the Dugoni School of Dentistry, just to name a few. We do not isolate ourselves, as we work closely with the San Francisco Dental Hygiene Society and the San Francisco Marin Medical Society. We are proud to work with every community group that has a stake in the dental health of this City, from CavityFreeSF to Project Homeless Connect. As a native San Franciscan, it makes me immensely proud to witness and learn of what we have accomplished. However, this also motivates me to carry on the community service of the last 150 years. Let this milestone serve as a new beginning, an awakening to serve this great community of San Francisco, to promote the oral health and general well-being of all its citizens. Please join me in celebration, but also in the excitement for what lies ahead of us. Cheers!

JEFFREY JANG, DDS — SFDS PRESIDENT 2019
Dr. Jeff Jang is a San Francisco native and is the epitome of a huge Giants fan. Dentistry runs in the Jang family so after graduating from UC Berkeley with a degree in biochemistry, he went to UCLA School of Dentistry. After finishing, he came back to San Francisco and completed an orthodontic residency at UCSF School of Dentistry. When he was done, he started working in San Francisco and now he has offices in both San Francisco and Daly City. Dr. Jang has served on the SFDS board and committees on and off since 1991, including as the chair of both the Community Dental Health Committee and the Nominating Committee before becoming president-elect in 2018. Dr. Jang is married to Terri and has two sons, Mitchell and Brent. Outside of the office, he enjoys spending time with his family and is a Bay Area sports fan, cheering on the Giants, Forty-Niners and Warriors. He can also be found coaching youth sports, traveling, cooking, skiing and playing golf. CARLOS NOGUEIRO, DDS — SFDS PRESIDENT-ELECT 2019
Dr. Carlos Nogueiro was born in Cuba and in 1968, at the age of eight, his family entered the United States as refugees from the Castro regime. From speaking no English and having nothing but 80 pounds of clothes, his family worked hard and Dr. Nogueiro was eventually accepted to U.C. Berkeley. He graduated with a degree in biophysics and was accepted into the UCSF School of Dentistry. Upon graduation, he was hired by Dr. Mitchell J. Bilafer, from whom he eventually purchased the practice. Dr. Nogueiro has served on many SFDS committees, on the Board of Directors since 2006, serving in many capacities including treasurer, secretary, and governance committee chair. Dr. Nogueiro is married to Anna and has two children, Laura and Eric. His family is what he values the most. When he isn’t doing dentistry and spending time with his family, he enjoys design projects, working with his hands, woodworking, hiking, golfing, and photography. SAN FRANCISCO DENTAL SOCIETY

From the Executive Director As we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the founding of the San Francisco Dental Society (SFDS), I’ve enjoyed researching and learning about our history. I’ve gained some newfound perspective this year, with the realization that while we have evolved, much of what moves us forward today is why dentists came together in 1869. The SFDS, then the San Francisco Dental Association (SFDA), organized in 1869 to ensure the “ethical practice of dentistry,” and to elevate dentistry to a “profession” and to “share knowledge.” The first SFDA Constitution declared among the objectives of this association “To cultivate the science and art of dentistry and cognate sciences . . .To elevate and sustain the character of the profession . . .To promote mutual improvement, both professional and social.” In an effort to establish standards, the first members of the SFDA wanted a dental school in California and in 1870, at the very first meeting of the California State Dental Association (CSDA), the idea of a dental school was the first item of business. Finally, in 1881 the University of California Dental College opened in San Francisco followed by the establishment of The College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) in 1896. In 1918, P&S dropped its medical and pharmacy schools to focus solely on dentistry and is now recognized as the University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry. Over the past 150 years, dentistry has evolved from a trade to become a profession with a basis in science. We now have two dental schools in San Francisco. We’ve seen the advent of fluoridation, managed-care, dental insurance, infection control, hazardous waste protections, amalgam separators and computers in dentistry. We’ve gone from one meeting a year to many meetings; from the first association in the state to one of 32 components; from a handful of members to over 1000 members; from no staff to a dedicated team that partners with our SFDS volunteer leaders, contributing knowledge, experience and expertise to support the dental profession and the people it serves. SFDS leadership has evolved, as well. Our leadership is diverse in age, in culture, in gender, in nationalities, as well as in interests and specialties. The “cause” in 1869 was to “elevate and sustain the character of the profession” while at the same time promoting mutual improvement and building community. Throughout the 150 years since there have been various causes that continue to bring dentists together. profession and the patients you serve or to develop new tools to help you with the day-to-day practice of dentistry, organized dentistry at the national, state and local levels has been here working on your behalf. While dentistry has evolved, so too has the SFDS. We will continue to evolve as the needs and interests of our members evolve, and at the same time, we will continue to stay true to our core reasons for being—to protect the profession, to share knowledge and to provide community. As the SFDS turns 150 years old, I am also celebrating my 19th year as Executive Director of the Society. I am happy to report that the SFDS is thriving and can look forward to many more great things in the future. It has been my honor to serve such a distinguished profession and caring community of dentists.

SAN FRANCISCO 1869 It was 1869 when our predecessors met to form the first dental society in California, the San Francisco Dental Society. California had only been part of the country for 25 years and a state for only 19 years.

San Francisco had grown from 250 residents in 1846 to 34,000 after the Gold Rush of 1849 and to almost 150,000 after the Comstock Lode discoveries in 1859. Some of these dentists could have lived in one of those marvelous redwood Victorian houses that were sprouting up. This same year, 1869, the transcontinental railroad linked both coasts, erasing much of our isolation. These dentists must have been accustomed to rapid change in their environment and in their profession.

Few dental schools existed at that time, with none on the west coast. Licensing boards were forming but were not well enforced. Some of the dentists may have still been trained under apprenticeship. It wasn’t easy to get around SF at that time, except by foot. Most of the city’s population lived and worked in the northeast section of the city, as did most of the dentists. They frequently had their office on the ground floor and lived upstairs in the same building. Sometimes there was an assistant who helped clean and boil instruments. At lunchtime, he might have gone to one of the many nearby bars, where they served free food as long as you were having a drink. He enjoyed hearing music on the streets, where musicians made the streets their concert hall. I hope the music compensated for the constant odor of all those four-horse-team coaches or the noisy steam coaches.

Historical equipment were available? Let’s look at what they had—and what was on the horizon: • Did they have adjustable, reclining chairs? No, but the dental manufacturer SS White had invented a standalone, attachable headrest for any chair. The first pump-type hydraulic dental chair soon came in 1877. • Did they have high-speed, air-driven handpieces? No, they only had hand drills to supplement their hand instruments. In 1871 Morrison patented the first commercially manufactured foot-controlled dental engine, and Green the first electric dental engine. • Did they have local anesthesia? No, but ether, chloroform, and nitrous oxide could be used. • What materials did they have? Although silver amalgam was being introduced, the best restorative material was the cohesive annealed gold foil method introduced by Arthur in 1855. Barnum developed the rubber dam, held in place by small weights around the tooth or with a wide band holding it around the head. (And isn’t that still the best method for isolation and cleanliness?) The molding process for vulcanite dentures began in 1864. Some gold dentures were being made, both with porcelain teeth. • After work, what did these dentists do for fun or recreation? For a nickel, he could ride a street car to the beach or take a ferry ride to Oakland. By 1873, our dentists were appreciating the invention of the cable car by a Scottish immigrant, Andrew Hallidie. After earlier streetcars driven by steam or horses, San Francisco became the first city in the world to introduce cable cars into its traffic system.
1955 California Dental Association Service (CDS, later renamed Delta Dental) incorporated
I’m confident that our dentist predecessors were forward-looking, like most dentists. They treated their patients the best they could with the science, technology, and materials available, just like we do. But humankind always wants to make progress and improvements. Dentists were already turning their attention from mostly extractions of teeth to saving teeth and preventing disease. Tube toothpaste would not be available for about 20 years, but dentists made dentifrice for their patients in powder or liquid form in porcelain jars or bottles. They designed instruments for scaling to treat and prevent periodontal disease. Because of that transcontinental railroad, not only goods, but knowledge reached these SF dentists faster. In Missouri, a Union Army veteran dentist named Greene Vardiman Black was back in his office developing the fundamentals for tooth preparations and for improvements in our foot engines and our instruments. This development would soon lead our local dentists into the twentieth century.

SOME OF OUR MORE RECENT EFFORTS . . . CAVITYFREE SF CavityFree SF Children’s Oral Health Collaborative, a collaboration of multiple disciplines and sectors of committed organizations and individuals, is working to achieve the goal of zero cavities for all San Francisco children. The SFDS has been a part of CavityFree SF since 2013 and has helped work to eliminate disparities in oral health care so all San Francisco children can be cavity-free and healthy. SUGAR-SWEETENED BEVERAGE TAX The SFDS advocated against the overconsumption of sugary beverages and soda. To fight the ever-increasing marketing and sales in San Francisco, especially to young people, the SFDS endorsed the San Francisco Sugary Drinks Distributor Tax (SDDT). The tax, approved by voters in 2016, generates revenue, some of which is used to help reduce the consumption of sugary drinks and mitigate the impacts of sugary beverages with a focus on the populations most burdened by health-related diseases – including dental disease associated with consumption of these products. AMALGAM SEPARATORS AND WASTE WATER The San Francisco Dental Society (SFDS) worked successfully with the City for eighteen months in crafting a wastewater discharge permit program prior to program implementation in August 2003. This successful stakeholder process between the SFPUC and the San Francisco Dental Society, with help from CDA team-members, helped San Francisco’s dental offices, as good environmental stewards, to collaborate in the virtual elimination of amalgam waste discharges to the sewer system. TOBACCO TAX SFDS supported and campaigned for passage of Prop 56 – Tobacco Tax – which established an increased tax on cigarettes, including e-cigarettes. The money collected from this tax is earmarked for health care and dental disease prevention programs, including Medi-Cal, Denti-Cal and the state oral health program overseen by California’s dental director. Additionally, funds are allocated to student loan repayments for those willing to take Medi-Cal Dental patients into their practices/clinic. SFKIDS VS BIG TOBACCO SFDS joined a coalition of doctors, parents and other non-profit and community groups supporting an ordinance originally passed by the City and County of San Francisco Board of Supervisors to restrict the sale of flavored tobacco products. SFDS POSTER CONTEST This annual tradition, started more than 44 years ago, has been a much-anticipated staple each year. The contest, held every February during National Children’s Dental Health Month, is open to all San Francisco public and private kindergarten through fifth grade students. Each year, hundreds of elementary school children submit colorful artwork based on an oral health theme and 60 winners are chosen, with prizes awarded including the grand prize – the Dr. Dennis Shinbori Award, named for the long-time chair of the contest. In 2020, Dr. Shinbori will be passing the torch to his long-time co-chair, Dr. Stafford Duhn and this wonderful tradition will continue. PROJECT HOMELESS CONNECT (PHC)/SFDS CITY SMILES CONNECT PHC excels in connecting the most vulnerable San Franciscans to vital resources throughout the city, including medical and dental care. SFDS member dentists donate their time and talents at PHC’s one-stop shop events. Additionally, SFDS launched a City Smiles Connect denture project to address an identified need of PHC clients that live on the streets and cannot find a job due to their physical appearance of edentulism. Many have benefited from this program. KINDERGARTEN SCHOOL SCREENINGS Each year, the SFDS partners with the SFDPH and SFUSD to help promote proper oral hygiene and provide oral health screenings to kindergarten students enrolled in San Francisco’s public schools. SFDS member dentists volunteer their time and talents to screen every kindergarten class in public schools across the city. This program, in conjunction with other efforts, is making a difference.

OLYMPIC CLUB HISTORY The Olympic Club started in 1860 with 23 members. It is fitting that we celebrate our 150th at such a venerable location which, like the SFDS, is noted as a community that links the past, present and future. The Olympic Club started as an informal gymnastics training organization and turned this focus into a lasting institution. Some notable early members were Mark Twain, William Randolph Hearst, Charles Crocker, Leland Stanford and others. The Club is home to many U.S. Open champions.
