MEASURINGACADEMICEXCELLENCEATLINDEN:

Unwavering Commitment to Holistic Student Growth

At Linden, our aim is to meet provincial standards and prepare our students to excel beyond them We foster strong academic skills through a multifaceted and supportive approach to learning, ensuring our students are well-rounded and ready for future challenges.

1. Academic Benchmarks and Standards

For students in Grades 1 through 8, we conduct regular benchmark assessments in literacy and numeracy throughout the year. These assessments allow us to monitor and respond to each student’s growth, adapting our instruction as needed to help every student reach or exceed grade-level expectations

In high school, projects and exams are evaluated against provincial exemplars, ensuring our assessments align with the highest academic consistency and rigorous standards.

2.

BEYONDSTANDARDIZEDTESTING:

Valuing Critical Thinking and Communication

While some standardized tests provide insights into academic progress, these measures only capture some essential skills required for future success

Our focus extends to critical thinking, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities skills cultivated through hands-on, meaningful learning experiences. Here are a few examples of how our students engage with these deeper learning goals:

STEMforaBetterWorldFair

Every year, students from all grades explore a question of personal interest, applying math, science, and research skills to investigate and present their findings This event encourages inquiry, creativity, and scientific rigour.

ModelUnitedNations

High school students prepare for the Model UN in Montreal by conducting extensive research and writing detailed position papers, which they present to peers across Canada This experience builds their understanding of global issues and their ability to argue persuasively.

SeniorPassionProjects

School-WidePresentations

From Grades 1 through 12, students deliver presentations on topics they are passionate about, presenting to the entire school community multiple times a year In our supportive environment, these talks foster research skills, confidence, and public speaking abilities, ensuring the social and emotional development of our students.

MathematicsCompetitions

Beginning in Grade 5, our students participate in the University of Waterloo’s renowned math contests, which challenge their mathematical skills and promote analytical thinking.

In Grade 12, students embark on passion projects guided by industry mentors. Whether developing documentaries, publishing books, or delivering TED-style talks, these projects allow students to pursue meaningful work independently and showcase their learning creatively and impactfully.

3. Gifted Education for All Students

At Linden, we do not believe in restricting advanced learning opportunities to 'gifted' programs. Instead, we integrate the principles of gifted education high standards, space for personalized interests, and project-based learning into all courses

This ensures that regardless of background or initial skill level, all students are encouraged to stretch their potential and maximize their abilities through an engaging, challenging curriculum.

4.

PREPAREDFORTHEFUTURE:

University and Beyond

One of our most valuable indicators of success comes from our alumnae. When they return to share their university experiences, they consistently highlight how well-prepared they felt for post-secondary life after Linden

From confidently participating in large lectures to seeking mentorship during professors' office hours, our graduates report excelling in math and research tasks, thanks to the robust foundation they received at Linden. Hearing that their skills and preparedness are recognized by university faculty is a powerful affirmation that our commitment to academic excellence is yielding lasting results.

“In your first year at university, it can be hard to build connections with your professors because of the class size. My largest class was 700. Linden gave me an advantage because I knew how to interact positively with teachers, in person and over email.

I wasn’t afraid to answer or ask questions. Sometimes I would ask questions on behalf of classmates who were too intimidated to ask for themselves! In that class of 700, the professor knew my name.”

- Toni Spilfogel (Linden alum and published researcher in the field of green chemistry)

Math: PeerTeachingandRealIssues

Math classes encourage seniors to teach younger students, with Grade 12s leading math lessons for Grade 7 students. This peer-teaching approach strengthens seniors’ understanding of math concepts, builds communication skills, and reinforces the importance of mentorship. In Data Management, students also undertake relevant projects, analyzing global issues such as the economic impacts of COVID-19, connecting math to current events and fostering analytical skills

Classics:HistoryComesAlive

Arts:CraftingtheSpotlight

Media Arts students apply their pattern drafting and costume design skills for the Senior Drama production. This project brings together technical skills, creative vision, and teamwork as students design, construct, and refine costumes that enhance the performances of their peers on stage

High school students passionate about ancient cultures participate in the Classics Club, which culminates in a weekend at Brock University for events like chariot races, archaeology challenges, a Roman fashion show, and Latinspeaking contests These activities offer students a unique combination of historical learning, team-building, and fun.

PhysicalEducation:MentoringThroughSport

Through the “Sisters in Sport” program, Grade 11 and 12 students mentor younger students, encouraging them to engage in physical activity and build teamwork skills This program emphasizes sports' mental and physical health benefits, from resilience to stress management, and instills confidence that impacts both mentors and mentees

English:ExpressYourself

The senior English program goes beyond traditional essays, involving students in creative projects such as video essays, contributions to the Linden Literary Journal, and slam poetry that reflects their personal experiences. This curriculum fosters creative and analytical abilities, preparing students for the varied demands of post-secondary writing.

Integration:BridgingSkillsAcrossSubjects

Linden’s interdisciplinary approach connects learning across subjects, offering students a more cohesive understanding of their studies. For example, math students use advanced functions and software like Desmos to create original musical compositions during the annual music night Additionally, Grade 12 students present their multi-year Passion Projects long-term projects that integrate their interests with academic research demonstrating both expertise and dedication

French:DebatesandRealConversations

After a year of engaging with novels, current events, and cultural topics in French, students conduct formal debates on contemporary issues This experience allows them to practice complex vocabulary, articulate arguments confidently, and refine their fluency, preparing them for higher-level language use in real-world contexts.

Graduation: CelebratingEveryVoice

Linden’s graduation ceremony is unique because every graduating student, not just the valedictorian, delivers a speech during the Celebration to Greet the Summer. This tradition celebrates each student’s voice and journey, honouring their contributions to the Linden community and their aspirations for the future
