Welcome Colleagues I am delighted to welcome you to the 2017-18 Research Skills Development Programme. It is an exciting time for the University of Cumbria research degree programme as we start our 10th anniversary as the University of Cumbria, and during 2017-2018 our ability to award our own research degrees will be reviewed by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). We have a full agenda during this academic year, so please take a few minutes to read the information in this brochure. This year’s programme will enable you to:
Consider the techniques and skills required for research Interact with your fellow researchers and practitioners Contribute to discussions on the future direction of your and others research Explore new and different ways to develop your research Consider ways to develop engagement, influence and impact of your and others research Contribute to the discussion on the standards, ethics and governance to do research

This will also include the importance of proof reading and consistency in referencing style and organisation, printing and binding, and final submission. Research Skills (RDF A1) Research Methodologies Grounded Theory Seminar Facilitator: Dr. Andy Lowe Grounded Theory is an inductive methodology which can be used with either quantitative or qualitative data. It is a set of research procedures leading to the theoretical explanation of the action(s) that resolves the main concern of the participants in a substantive area. Research Skills (RDF A1) Research Methodologies Qualitative methodologies: Investigating power Facilitator: Dr Alison Jackson This session will invite participants to investigate what power might be, drawing on some ideas from theorists (e.g. Marx, Foucault and Bourdieu). Research colleagues will then be able to consider the effects of power on their own research methods, looking at such elements as data collection through interviews, observation and surveys, and the power of language, power relations and the researcher’s obligation to their participants.

Research Skills (RDF A2) Analysis & Evaluation Quantitative & Qualitative studies compare and contrast Facilitators: Associate Professor Theo Bampouras & Dr Konstantinos Papadopoulos The workshop will cover the main aspects of qualitative and quantitative research designs, the data collection methods and tools, their use and application, as well as common pitfalls, using worked examples from our research. The aim is to gain new perspectives on our writing and our writing habits in order to be more productive in the future. Research Skills (RDF A1) Research Methodologies Deliberative Methodology in Research Facilitator: Robert Ewin (PgR student) In thinking about Action Research, co-operative or deliberative inquiry, is described to involve two or more people researching a topic through their own experience of it, using cycles to move between their experiences, reflecting on the topic together (Heron, 1996). Personal Effectiveness (RDF B3) Professional & Career Development Induction for Teaching Facilitator: Professor Pete Boyd If you are a postgraduate research student pursuing a doctorate, part-time or full-time, then you may wish to develop some teaching experience in higher education as part of your wider professional development. Teaching in higher education is challenging but enjoyable and will give you a taste of academic life. You need to negotiate the possibility of gaining some teaching experience with your supervisor and within your department, but before beginning any teaching you need to attend a Graduate School induction workshop to be introduced to some of the key principles and practical arrangements involved 18 Jan 2018

It will explore the impact of undertaking artist’s residencies to kick-start the process, and illustrate ways of pulling in connections from art and life.
