National Nomination For North Street

South Bristol’s very own North Street has been nominated for the Great Street award in the 2014 Urbanism Awards.

The Urbanism Awards include five categories, each with three finalists. North Street in Bedminster is in competition with Park Lane / Poynton High Street in Cheshire, and Lamb’s Conduit Street in London for the street award.

Bedminster Named As A Portas Pilot Success Bedminster has been named as a ‘Portas Pilot’ success as it has recently seen a rise in the number of occupied retail units.

Special Sundays

Bristol played host to its first ever Make Sundays Special event in the city centre this June, where selected streets in the old centre were closed to traffic and opened up to people so they could enjoy family focussed fun events.

The June event was the first in a series of monthly Make Sundays Special activities in the centre and the programme will run on selected Sundays throughout the summer until 20th October.

The next Make Sundays Special event is going to be taking place on Sunday 21st July with further events planned for Sunday 18th August, Sunday 29th September and finally Sunday 20th October.

Green Kids

Pupils from Victoria Park Primary School recently visited Arnos Vale Cemetery and took part in some vital clearance to help support the charity.

The pupils, who were from year 6, took part in works as grounds volunteers. Among the work that was completed, the pupils cut back brambles, tidied graves, cleared paths to make access easier and created log piles for wildlife.

The pupils also learnt about the local area, including the wildlife, history and geography, while completing their task as grounds volunteers.

The children also discussed ways in which they could help to raise money for the Brislington charity, as Arnos Vale is their class charity for the year.

Happy Harbourside

Bristol Harbour Festival will be returning to town this month for its 42nd year - and this year the ‘State of Happiness’ - affectionately called the world’s 207th nation - will be the centrepiece for the festival.

Local charity Happy City alongside their Agents of Happiness - will be running the amphitheatre area of the festival, and will include music, theatre and affordable

activities designed to promote the idea of a happier planet.

Over 250,000 festival fans are expected to visit the two mile stretch along Bristol’s waterfront to party, dance, relax and enjoy the harbourside. This year the festival is going to be taking place from 26th - 28th July.

Dog Boarders

Grass Roots!

An area of grass in Victoria Park that borders St. Mary Redcliffe Primary School could become a wildflower meadow under plans being drawn up by Victoria Park Action Group (VPAG).

Bristol City Council, which owns the land, is working with VPAG to turn this area of the park from mown grass into a meadow of beefriendly flowers.

VPAG’s wildlife sub-group has applied to The Co-operative’s Plan Bee project for a grant to purchase wildflower seed to plant in the area.

It is hoped that the pupils of St. Mary Redcliffe Primary School will be able to help with the transformation by aiding the planting, and when the work has been completed, it will be used as an outdoor classroom.

Local charity Guide Dogs is appealing for volunteers in the Southville and Victoria Park/ Windmill Hill area to board its trainee dogs.

Potential boarders must be able to have the trainee guide dog in their home, feed and groom it on a daily basis and follow guidelines from the dog’s trainer.

Boarders also need to provide a safe secure enclosed garden or yard, so that the dog cannot escape, and if possible, a concrete area for the dog to relieve itself.

Lucy Risk of Guide Dogs said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to have the benefits of caring for a dog without the full-time responsibility.

It’s also rewarding to be involved in the upbringing and training of a guide dog, which will one day

provide independence to a blind or partially-sighted person.”

The charity supplies basic equipment and covers all veterinary and feeding expenses. Advice is also given regarding handling skills, basic first aid and the general care and welfare of the dog.

Support is available for the boarders from a friendly team of specialist Guide Dogs staff. Volunteers will have the dog for about 12 weeks in the evenings and weekend.

It is important that the charity finds enough homes to bring the trainee dogs closer to areas where their future visually impaired partners live.

Consumers in the South West say they’re buying more British products than ever before according to a recent survey.

Recent research published by rapeseed oil manufacturer Mr Hugh’s, revealed that nearly 9 out of 10 shoppers in the South West region say they want to buy British wherever possible – with 48% saying they’d be willing to pay more to achieve this.

Classic Quarter

A local man recently ran the Classic Quarter - a 44-mile coastal run - to raise money for Princess Alice Hospice.

The run takes place from Lizard Point (most southerly point of UK mainland) to Lands End (the most westerly point).

Matt Breech from Totterdown ran the Classic Quarter on his own for the first time to raise money for a charity that helped a friend who sadly died of cancer. At the time of writing, Matt had raised over £1,000 for Princess Alice Hospice.

Parks Consultation

Bristol residents are being asked to give their views on what sort of antisocial behaviour in the city’s parks they want action taken against.

The consultation - which will be running until 13th September - aims to find out if there are particular nuisances, such as loud noise, fires being lit or camping.

Gillian Douglas, Interim Service Director for Safer Bristol, said: “We want people to have the freedom to use parks and green spaces and to feel safe in doing so.

Sometimes, to ensure everyone’s enjoyment we need to tackle antisocial and nuisance behaviours.

“Where there are particularly common problems it will help to have the backing of specific byelaws to give officers the power to warn persistent offenders and as a last resort to take enforcement action.”

Mayor George Ferguson would like to see Bristol become the first solar panel city in the UK. Mr. Ferguson spent time in June visiting Barcelona, looking at their use of solar panels - and he hopes to see one gigawatt (GW) of electricity generated by photovoltaic panels by 2020 in Bristol.

Turner Painting

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery recently acquired a painting by the artist JMW Turner, which was painted by the artist in 1791 when he was just 16 years old.

The painting sold for £40,000, although the council did not spend any of its own money.

Julie Finch, from Bristol Museum, said: “We hope that this acquisition will be of great interest to our national and international visitors. The watercolour will help to explain and illustrate the aesthetic and historical relevance of the Bristol landscape.”

Bedminster’s Fresh Coat Of Paint Over this year’s May bank holiday, visitors in their thousands gathered to see artists from across the globe take part in Europe’s largest urban street art festival, Upfest.

Bedminster became a canvas for over 300 artists over three days as the festival commenced for its sixth year.

From painted bowling balls at Victoria Park to a giant cat with piercing amber eyes on the side of the Masonic pub - painted by French artist C215 - Bedminster saw it all at Upfest 2013.

The children’s area was larger than ever before, with many youngsters trying their hand at badge making, hat making, and painting - and of course, the children themselves became canvases for some creative face-painters.

As part of the festival, the Tobacco Factory, Dean Lane Skate Park and North Street Green all hosted live music, with DJs playing the best urban sounds.

For another year, Upfest helped to raise money and awareness for The National Association for Children of Alcoholics (NACOA).

Professor Julia Verne, director of the South West Public Health Observatory, said: “While we realise there are some people who cannot engage fully in physical activity, small increases in activity, even for those who can’t be fully active, would still develop big health benefits.”

Lack of physical activity could cause as many as 3,606 premature deaths in the South West each year, according to statistics recently released by charity Sustrans and the South West Public Health Observatory (SWPHO).

The statistics show that levels of physical activity among people aged between 40 and 79 are currently low - and that across England, inactivity could be responsible for 36, 815 premature deaths in this age group.

It is recommended by the government that adults undertake two and a half hours of moderate activity each week - or 30 minutes of exercise, five days a week.

Sunscreen and Youth

Australian researchers have recently reported that regular daily use of sunscreen appears to slow the ageing process of the skin among middle-aged men and women.

The results come from 4.5 years of tracking sunscreen use and its ultimate impact on skin quality among more than 900 men and women under 55.

All of the participants had been randomly assigned to two sunscreen groups, and the first group were given instructions to use SPF 15 sunscreen on a daily basis. They applied it to their head, neck, arms and hands every morning, and reapplied after bathing, heavy sweating or spending a few hours outside.

The second group was not told to avoid sunscreen, but rather to use it when they wanted.

After the years of study, those in the group that used sunscreen every day were found to have experienced much less skin ageing compared with the group that applied it as they wished.

Study co-author Adele Green, lab head and senior research fellow with the Queensland Institute of Medical Research at Royal Brisbane Hospital, said: “This has been one of those beauty tips you often hear quoted, but for the first time we can back it with science. Protecting yourself from skin cancer by using sunscreen regularly has the added bonus of keeping you looking younger.”

Dr. Beth McLellan, of NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, said: “We already know that sunscreen can prevent skin cancer and this study shows that regular use of sunscreen can also help prevent ageing — all the more reason to incorporate sunscreen into one’s daily skin care regimen.”

TIPS FOR APPLYING SUNSCREEN • Apply sunscreen 15 minutes before going out in the sun.

• If you don’t have much hair, apply sunscreen to the top of your head, or wear a hat.

• Reapply at least every two hours.

• Give babies and children extra care in the sun. Ask a health care professional before applying sunscreen to children under 6 months old.

Students’ Award

Six pupils from Bedminster Down School, who rescued a girl from a swollen river and helped over a hundred other young people to cross safely, have received special awards to mark their achievement from Avon Fire and Rescue Service.

The fifteen-year-olds from Bedminster Down School were competing in the Ten Tors Challenge on Dartmoor when they used a throw-line to help a girl who had fallen into the river between the third and fourth Tor. Their rescue attracted international publicity.

On the first day of the trek, and having made good time, the team, led by Matt Hunt, decided to find a safer place to cross a dangerously swollen river.

Steve Christie, Bedminster Down School business manager said: “We are very proud of the team; it’s great that they’re receiving this extra recognition.”

Briswool Project

Paper Village Community Arts, which created the hyperbolic crochet reef and the underwater wooly wonderland, are planning to create a 3D representative model of Bristol from all kinds of materials.

Features of the city such as the SS Great Britain, Bristol Zoo, Ashton Court and Millenium Square will be knitted, crocheted, and needle felt to create a model of the city.

The project will include lots of

free get-togethers to share ideas and help create ‘Briswool’ - and Paper Village will develop some patterns for some of the tricky bits to make, such as sailing boats and balloons.

The completion date for the project is May 1st 2014, with the aim that following completion, the project will be exhibited around Bristol.

Local cemetery Arnos Vale recently announced that £6,000 was raised at their community run and toddle, which was sponsored

by Puddle Ducks.

Runners, toddlers, volunteers and spectators all contributed to the family day, and over 100 participants took part in the run and toddle to raise the money.

All the money raised for Arnos Vale will go towards Heritage Lottery Fund’s Catalyst Endowment Challenge. When funds are raised, the Heritage Lottery Fund will match them to help the long term sustainability of Arnos Vale. The money raised from the run will double to £12,000.

Stagecoach students at the Long Ashton and Portishead centres have recently celebrated outstanding exam results in their Musical Theatre exams.

Administered by Performing Arts Awards, the exams measure a student’s individual achievement in singing, dance and drama skills during a timed performance with their peers. These are similar to a graded exam for flute, ballet or piano, but cover all areas of a stage performer’s skill base.

All of the ninety-three Stagecoach students entered earned well above the standard Pass mark; sixty-three were awarded Merits, showing strong skill, and thirty were awarded Distinctions for excellence in the performing arts.

Principal Heidi Hollis said: “Our results are astonishing! I’m

especially proud of our eldest students, Rosie and Taynee, who took on a huge challenge with Grade 6, and they both got Distinctions!

“When our students attend their weekly classes, they are challenged to use their imaginations, speak clearly, work together as a team, and use their physical skills in inventive ways.

This sets them up beautifully to excel in these exams, but more importantly to present themselves with confidence to the wider world.”

Whilst they by no means invented the concept of alternative rap, they are certainly synonymous with it; marking the first foray of many hip-hop beginners into something a little more esoteric.

Even now, with innovators like Kanye West, El-P and Le1f leading the alternative charge, Jurassic 5 have lost none of their power.

he World’s End marks the end of the Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy of films by Simon Pegg and his former Spaced colleague, producer and director Edgar Wright, beginning with Shaun of the Dead in 2004 and its follow-up Hot Fuzz in 2007.

It’s Victorian England and Candida is married to a highly respected clergyman. She fulfils the domestic role of wife and mother but when a beautiful young poet enters the family home her relationship looks likely to crumble.

en years ago, phoning someone using a computer sounded like something very complicated or science fiction.

Nowadays it is simple and Skype is an everyday word that almost everyone understands.

When you can call family and friends for free from any wi-fi device, why wouldn’t you? Even more astonishingly, you can see the people you are calling if you have a webcam, which most modern laptops, smartphones and tablets do. Many people are suspicious of free things, but in this case you don’t need to bethere is no catch.

You need to download Skype’s free software onto your computer or an app onto your smartphone/ tablet. Then register with the company and set up a username and password for the account.

Once you have set up your account and tested your hardware, you will be able to search for other family/friends who use Skype.

In order to protect you Skype has a system of introductions, you have to accept a friend in order to talk to them, and request permission from your friends to be accepted!

The clever thing about Skype is that you can see which of your contacts is online and available to chat by the colour of the symbol next to their name. (Green means they are online and available). If your contact is not online, you

Football Friends

Over a thousand pounds has recently been raised in memory of an actor from Southville.

Thomas Hare’s friends decided to hold a five-a-side football tournament in honour of him, after he drowned in March when taking part in an event to celebrate the Mekong river in South-East Asia. The tournament attracted over 20 teams.

Hare’s friend Wayne Loud, who organised the tournament, said: “We were hoping to get between ten and 15 teams but ended up having 25. We were wanting to raise £500 but it was more like £1,200.”

The event, named A Tournament for Tommy was held at Goals Bristol North in Filton. The money has been donated to the Creative Youth Network.

European Capital

The city of Bristol has recently been named European Green Capital 2015!

The successful bid by Bristol means that the city will have the chance to be recognised on an international stage for making the city as green as possible.

Bristol had been placed first or second in each of 12 categories in the initial stage of the bid, meaning that the bid for European

Green Capital was stronger than ever before.

This was followed by a presentation in Brussels this May and the announcement of the winner was then made on June 14.

Bristol saw off competition from Brussels (Belgium), Bydgoszcz (Poland), Dublin (Ireland), Glasgow (UK), Kaunas (Lithuania), Kutahya (Turkey), and Ljubljana (Slovenia) who were all nominated for the award.

Double Award For Ocean’s Lettings Team On Friday the 24th May Ocean attended the letting agency of the year awards at Lancaster Hotel, London. Ocean is pleased to announce that they were voted The Times and Sunday Times Medium Letting Agent of the Year in Bristol and the South West. This was voted for by an independent panel of industry experts headed by the Property Ombudsmen and the Chairman of the NFOPP (National Federation of Property Professionals). The judges stated that ‘there is a thriving lettings industry in Bristol and competition among the local agents is strong but it is the agent that responds to its clients’ needs in the most innovative ways that comes out on top’.

Ombudsmen team and Mark Hayward who is chairman of the NFOPP, Ocean was selected as the best medium sized letting agency in the South West. The competition was fierce and Ocean was finally shortlisted against 13 other candidates in their category. It was obvious to the judges that there was a passion for the business at Ocean and its proposition was in a ‘different class’.

The judges then went onto say that Ocean are full of clever ideas, also ensuring they are active across all social media, keeping their blog up to date, making an app available to clients, and also producing an in-house magazine.

The application process was via a very detailed entry form and a subsequent telephone interview that took place. Ocean was then mystery shopped and judged by a panel of industry experts, whom under the auspices of Christopher Haymer who is part of the Property

In addition to this, Ocean were also awarded bronze award nationally in the customer service category.

This is a huge achievement given the competition they were up against. With the customer satisfaction rate sitting at 95%, the judges agreed it is ‘definitely an agent that has not lost sight of good

Community Chest

Each year GBCP has about £20K (thanks to the council) to distribute as small grants to groups working to improve the neighbourhoods of Ashton, Bedminster and Southville.

These groups are among the around 100 or so organisations that are the partners within GBCP along with the police, council and some local businesses.

Our decisions were made in June.

Winter Lanterns Group, which is preparing for their third lantern parade in December. The Winter Lantern Parade is developing into an important annual event for BS3.

Acta Community Theatre are hoping to develop their building and their grant will assist in drawing up plans. We made a contribution to a sensory garden in Luckwell Improvement Project (LImP), secured a small contribution to money already raised to improve Luckwell Park, and we gave a small sum to under-pin a history project on Bedminster’s tobacco women.

The biggest grant, £2532, went to further develop the community garden in the Marksbury Road area.

There’s so much going on that we were not able to help every group, but we will be encouraging them to seek support from other sources.

Each year the awards panel, itself composed of local people, is

amazed by the variety, imagination and enthusiasm of our neighbours.

Farewell to Mary

Readers will know that GBCP’s big project for 2012-13 was the reinvigoration of our retail streets.

Phase one has now ended with the spending of the Mary Portas funds received early in 2012. The new Business Improvement District (BID) has formed a company called Bedminster Town Team Ltd and had its first board meeting in June with a minimum income of £80K pa for at least five years. The aims of the project remain the same: get the 450 businesses to work together to improve the streets; attract more shoppers, especially from the local community; and encourage new businesses to invest in the streets.

Not easy in a lack-lustre economy, but, with your help, we will do it.

Dawn Primarolo It has been a very busy few weeks in the constituency and as such, I wanted to use my Pigeon column this month to let you know about the local events I have attended recently in the BS3 area.

I was delighted to be invited to officially open the new Bedminster Post Office at the top of East Street in early June.

This Post Office branch has recently relocated from its former site around the corner in Cannon Street and has had a complete redesign in the process, making it much more modern, so I was very pleased to declare the new facility open as I cut the ribbon alongside the Post Office staff.

During my visit to the new branch I was able to meet the Subpostmaster, David Andrews, and the valuable members of his team who are clearly very committed to providing high levels of service to all Post Office customers.

The same range of products and services are available as before, but helpfully, the opening hours have been increased so the branch is now open to customers from 8.00am – 6.00pm from Monday to Saturday.

I am sure that these extended hours will be appreciated by local residents who previously had difficulty getting to the Post Office during the day if they worked full time or had other commitments and I’m certain this new branch will be well used by both Bedminster residents and businesses.

calls for a more frequent local rail service at Bedminster and Parson Street stations.

Unfortunately, it is currently the case that rail passengers can wait for up to an hour for their next train at Bedminster or Parson Street at certain times of the day.

Local transport group, Friends of Suburban Bristol Railways (FOSBR) - who believe that the neglected railways can make a crucial contribution to Bristol’s transport issues - are currently campaigning for a new timetable with a halfhourly service at these two local stations. This is an aim that I fully support.

I know many local residents already choose to travel by train to and from Bedminster and Parson Street, in particular those commuting for work purposes, but there is undoubtedly potential for yet more people to travel by train if they knew they could rely on a regular and frequent service.

I have long been supporting plans for a Greater Bristol Metro which would see an improved integrated rail network across Bristol to help to make local train travel a viable alternative to the private car.

It is clear and widely agreed that we need substantial investment in infrastructure to bring about better local rail services and I have been pressing Transport Ministers on this issue.

I can assure you that I will be working with local transport groups to continue to make the case for improved rail.

Parking Schemes

City Football Club are preparing to consult with local residents on plans to expand Ashton Gate. Legal wrangles have delayed Bristol City’s proposed move to Ashton Vale, and the club are now considering whether to seek to redevelop Ashton Gate instead.

Sean, who lives five minutes walk from Ashton Gate Stadium, said: “I have always been supportive of the club’s ambition. Personally, I would prefer to see them in a modern, purpose built stadium in Ashton Vale, with all the economic benefits that a new stadium would bring to the area.

“However, I recognise the club have to be pragmatic, and can see why they are looking again at how they could redevelop Ashton Gate.

While I am sympathetic to the principle, I will be working to make sure that local residents are genuinely consulted throughout, and that their views are properly taken into account.

Again, please do let me know what you think about this, so that any representations I make can properly reflect the breadth of local opinion.”

I shall be working to make sure that any residents’ parking scheme here will solve our parking problems without hampering businesses or costing car owners too much.

Our area needs different solutions to protect against commuter parking in the streets near the New Cut, while enabling shoppers to use local shops and services. In the future, the BCFC proposal for a rail station at Winterstoke Road is a realistic way to move thousands of fans on match days, but until this is in place we need to be creative about match day parking. Please look out for consultation meetings.

Many thanks to those local residents who continue to get in touch with the local councillors about the mayor’s proposals for residents’ parking schemes.

Sean has made statements to the mayor and the commission who scrutinise his work on transport, asking him to allow local residents to take the final decision on whether there should be a residents’ parking zone.

Sean said: “It looks likely that residents’ parking is going to dominate Bristol’s political landscape over the next few months.

“At the moment, the mayor wants to bring these zones into a large zone around the city centre, which will stretch right to Winterstoke Road south of the river. I believe that he needs to change tack. Undoubtedly some of our streets do have problems with commuter parking, and residents should be able to choose whether or not they should have residents’ parking. But I know that these proposals will leave many local residents baffled.

“There is, for example, little or no commuter parking in Ashton, and I would completely understand why residents here would wonder why they are being expected to pay to park their cars to solve a nonexistent problem.”

Now the mayor has started a debate about residents’ parking, Colin and Mark would like to hear about where there is a problem with commuter parking in Bedminster Ward - and where there isn’t.

Dear Editor, I am currently helping a friend search for a flat with two bedrooms in the Southville area for her and her daughter.

This has been a real eye opener.

We have been viewing properties that are supposedly two bedrooms that could not fit a single bed in the room. The second ‘bedroom’ was a box room. But mostly my friend has experienced extreme prejudice, ‘no DSS’ - why is this allowed?

Landlords, please take note. DSS can be hardworking individuals who cannot work full time due to childcare needs. Why is it acceptable to refuse?

I think the art work is interesting.

I don’t think it makes Bedminster look more run down. I love the new graffiti on the side of the Malago guest house - it’s sorely needed on such a drab, treeless street. The graffiti on the shutters help make the streets look lively when the shops are shut in the evening. Even if they are not to everyone’s taste,

they are much more interesting to look at than grey metal. I also think that Upfest puts Bedminster/Southville on the Bristol map - like the carnivals in St. Paul’s and St. Werburgh’s it brings people to our community who might not otherwise know how fab it is here.

Having said all that, I think Upfest could be improved by having a better area for families. Last year it didn’t feel like a great place to take under-5s, as it was far too busy.

I loved the North Street fair last year - just the right balance of liveliness while still feeling safe for small ones, and lots of familiar faces to bump into.

the crossroads of North St & Upton Road has been coned off down one side for No Parking.

The cones were there primarily to ensure the safety of the road workers and to make traffic flow better.

Some moronic mindless motorists must think these cones were street art and to be ignored so they can have a parking space. Plenty of knuckleheads have moved these cones, some even mounted the pavement to park. One night an ambulance with blue lights flashing was delayed. No doubt these numbskulls would be the first to complain if the emergency services were delayed in coming to their aid, their water supply affected for longer or had to wait in traffic or even had to WALK to the Tobacco Factory Theatre or market. Plus of course the idiots who persist in driving in excess of 20mph: even through the road works!!

It really beggars belief that some people are so STUPID!

Dear Editor, Surely I’m not the only person who agrees with George Ferguson on the Residents’ Parking Schemes for Southville?

I’m finding it more and more difficult to park near my home in the heart of Southville, especially if I need to go out in the afternoon as commuters take up the spaces for the whole day. The parking scheme will prioritise local residents.
