To be modern is to be "of the time." For over seven decades, one building system has been inspired and responded to growing environmental consciousness, changing lifestyles, and the demands of daily living. Ever of the time.

LlNDAL MODERN

i

Lindal modern. It began with the Lindal Classic. Lindal Elements is the product of over seven decades of refinement. The launch of the Elements system one decade ago introduced a new approach to the creation of highly personalized homes, enhancing our ability to design with efficiency, flexibility, and predictability.

Today, the Elements portfolio showcases over 100 designs created by the Lindal team; signature designs by collaborating architects, and, for the first time, Elements Classics; designs with more traditional architectural form. Personalize one or let them inspire your one of-a-kind Lindal Elements design.

In Toronto, Sir Walter Lindal was creating a building system that celebrated the same standards: efficiency, flexibility, and environmental responsiveness. Lindal utilized the efficiency of a post and beam system to create a strong skeletal framework and enable open and lofty interiors, providing the flexibility of placing

valleys to the highest peaks. The bold transparency was enhanced with roof beams that seamlessly pierced the glass walls from the inside to form deep overhangs on the exterior. The overhangs also performed the vital functions of shading the glass and protecting the exterior walls from the elements.

desirable for enduring quality wooden structures.

The iconic Lindal prow became the centerpiece of many Lindal plans developed over the next seven decades. Under the leadership of the Lindal family, the Classic, as we refer to it today, became the industry’s gold standard for system-built home designs. Sir Walter Lindal understood the importance of offering his system in a wide range of sizes and configurations as pre-planned and pre-priced kit homes that could be personalized for each client.

Founder Sir Walter Lindal

The number of choices is matched by the complexity of climatic, zoning, and green-building standards. The early Lindals were weekend homes built on secluded sites. Today, we often design primary homes for small, urban sites. Privacy, setbacks, height restrictions, and respect for a neighborhood's architectural tradition are as important as views. In increasing numbers, we design homes with accessory dwelling units for multigenerational living, private offices for professionals who work from home, and spaces that will evolve from one use to another over time. Planning a new home is a complex undertaking in an age when schedules include demanding professional, family, and community priorities.

Every Lindal home is produced with sustainable materials of extraordinary quality. We use wood sourced from the Pacific Northwest; premium quality framing materials; laminated Douglas fir beams, cedar siding, and trim; energy-efficient windows and doors, architectural-grade beams; and high-grade hardware. Lindal's is the industry's only building system covered by a lifetime structural warranty. A legendary system that creates and produces one-of-a-kind homes that utilize efficiency to control cost.

17

A modern approach to design Lindal's process and products respond to the concept of “home and the pressures of daily life. Here is a little insight into how we created the proprietary Lindal Elements system that provides the rare synthesis of efficiency, flexibility, and predictability: Increased efficiency and the capability to create and refine custom designed homes in less time. We began by returning to Sir Walter Lindal’s original concept of a system of interchangeable parts, organized to maximize the structural efficiency of each component, create open floor plans, and provide transparency to the natural environment. A disciplined modernization of the system allowed us to reduce the number of parts dramatically. For example,

Any roof on any plan.

we reduced the number of window widths by utilizing the optimal post and beam spacing consistently. We

You can select different roof styles for any floorplan.

reduced the window sill heights above the floor by defining the sill height required for each type of use and desired transparency. That reduced the number of window sizes from thousands to hundreds, while maintaining the full range of glass areas.

Unlimited window and door configurations are available.

Increased exibility of the post and beam kit. The Lindal post and beam kit enables flexibility through the ability to organize the structure in an infinite number of configurations. In the Elements system, the reduced number of parts makes it practical to offer material options for each part without affecting design and engineering efficiency. This enables us, for example, to supplement our cedar window offering with aluminum clad, vinyl, fiberglass, and steel window options in each system size and configuration. Increased predictability to inform the design process and control cost. By reducing the number of component sizes, we built a pricing system that includes the price of each option for each system part. This enables us to predict and refine cost as needed by selecting various material options and understanding their cost impact on any Elements design. The system predicts the cost impact of adding or changing windows, or using aluminum clad, fiberglass, or vinyl windows instead of cedar. Instantly. By repeating this process with every major component – siding, door and hardware styles, and trim systems – the Elements system predicts and helps control cost with no peer.

The flexibility of the Elements system allows you to transform a design with a flat roof to a more traditional pitched-roof design without changing the floor plan.

Conceived for a narrow beachfront or in-town site, this home is opaque on one side, while the glass-enclosed great room wraps around a covered deck and yard on the other. A shaft of two-story space forms the home’s daylit spine and creates a floating social area on the upper level.

A case study in Elements flexibility and efficiency Design a custom home or let our experts personalize an existing plan from our portfolio like this customized Seafoam 2010. 1.

The upper level bedroom area overlooks the great room and enjoys the loftiest views in the home. The ground floor suite is private and serviced by a nearby hallway refreshment center for midnight snacking or morning coffee.

2.

To one side of the covered main entry, the centrally located great room of this customized Seafoam 2010 features a multi-zone kitchen. The dining or lounging area is defined by its two-story height and lofty glass corner.

3.

Elements designs stay true to a pattern of window style and placement that feels balanced and provides plenty of natural light.

4.

Floor-to-ceiling glass panels at the ends of hallways make a trip down a hall feel like a nature walk.

5.

On the other side of the entry, a private area with three exposures enables the flexible placement of windows and added height. The space can function as a gracious living room, a media or music room, a kids’ play area or billiards retreat, or a professional home office.

The Columbia was originally designed for a young family on a narrow sloping site in a traditional urban neighborhood. The primary living spaces are farthest from the street with private rear and side yards. The central entry joins the home to a private suite; designed to evolve from an ADU for aging parents to a professional office and finally a master suite, without any renovation.

The Didyma (meaning twins) is a single continuous vaulted space with a monopitch roof that floats above a band of clerestory windows. A horizontal level above the doors and main windows connects all the walls and flat ceilings. This results in a calm composition that anchors the main volume to the ground. The two roofs rising in opposite directions create a dynamic visual crowning of the home.

The Taliesin and the Lindal teams collaborated to create three Lindal Mod.Fab designs of 470, 700, and 800 square feet. A warm wood siding option was introduced as a more traditional choice. These and other accessory dwelling unit designs are a popular modern lifestyle choice for many of our clients.

Prior to the creation of the Elements system, Lindal launched its modern design program with nine bold and fresh designs created by Turkel Design. The immediate success of these designs confirmed that Lindal Modern would be at home in both rugged, rural, and more urban sites.

Lindal homes designed by Turkel Design have been built throughout North America and in several international locations. Sweeping horizontal lines with multiple roof planes and gently sloping butterfly roofs cap these graceful and wellproportioned designs that hug the ground. The stunning interiors make subtle distinction between communal and private spaces with varied ceiling heights. Circulation ways are two-story shafts of space naturally lit from above. Thoughtful layouts offer a great deal of functional flexibility and accommodate evolving lifestyles. The Lindal/Turkel Design collaboration became the most successful entry in the Dwell Homes Collection and was also showcased in TIME’s 2009 Green Design 100 special issue.

Designed with a growing family in mind, this three-bedroom, three-bath home features ensuite bedrooms on both floors. In the great room, an operable wall of glass opens the house onto a shaded deck. Above, the studio/workspace is the perfect tree-fort getaway. Open to the fireplace below and the trees beyond, it is an ideal refuge that will both inspire and soothe.
