Mediterranean style

Hurray the outdoor season is here! I absolutely love the summer season, enjoying outdoor spaces for entertaining and hosting. If you’re seeking inspiration for sourcing outdoor furniture, accessories and how to style your garden in 2023? Then you’ve come to the right place!

To create a slice of Mediterranean in your garden by choosing earthy tones and naturalcoloured outdoor furniture, Get the look: “Think about positioning furniture under a large tree or pergola to create a shaded seating area that would be perfect to enjoy in warmer weather. Another perfect addition would be to add in a outdoor pizza oven to cook your pizza outside, true Italian style. Also plant olive trees, source stone water features and textured outdoor cushion and throws.”

Garden’s however big or small from terraces, courtyard gardens and patios are extensions of our interior living spaces, In 2023 brands and manufactures are launching outdoor furniture that mimics high end living and dining room furniture, that will be equally at home in the outdoors.

Scandinavian

The outdoor living trend is here to stay and it is all about connecting your interior space with the extension of outdoor furniture and outdoor accessories. During Covid we found that the outdoor space provided a place for friends and family to spend quality time together. Now that our daily lives are returning to normal our garden outdoor spaces are still so important for a calming escape, a place to relax and refresh after a long day.

For a contemporary modern sleek garden look, get inspired by Scandinavian style furniture. Get the look “Sleek corner style sofas and pared back design against fresh lush green grass and potted plants and finish with wooden decking or sleek contemporary outdoor patio slabs. Add a outdoor fireplace with a shelf for holding logs, is a great styling option and fire it up once the sun sets.”

Do you want to create a designer look in your garden? Here are my top garden style trends for 2023 and how to achieve that look. 9

Our Home Country cottage

Get the look: “Dark grey and black lightweight aluminium furniture with waterproof upholstered seating, creating a statement that is worthy of a cocktail evening in the garden.”

‘Cottage core’ interior trend has allowed country cottage gardens to still be as trendy as ever.

Outdoor Textiles

Get the look: “Choose rattan style furniture, relaxing padded seating, swinging chairs and rustic garden pots and borders filled with a selection of wildflowers, such as daisies, honeysuckle, foxglove and marigolds. Style you’re seating with soft green patterned outdoor cushions and casual throws.”

Another way to embrace the indoor-outdoor trend is to design an outdoor space that doesn't hold back when it comes to textiles. Make your garden patio a more welcoming space with pillows and rugs designed to be used outdoors.

Indoor ‘Worthy’ statement furniture

Get the look “I sourced this great range of recycled waterproof cushions made from 100% PET with Repellent Lining. Cushion cover and cushion pads are available to order from Jennifer Suzanne Interiors”

Super stylish garden sets that could be worthy of an indoor space, add a fire pit dining table and dining chairs that could look just at home in your dining room.

small area of the garden to provide worktop space look for offcuts of quartz, using colourful tiles to add statement, build storage and a simple open fire or integrated BBQ using interior, existing, upcycled and simple wooden structures painted in beautiful outdoor wood paint to create a cohesive colour scheme

Multifunctional pieces such as a firepit dining table will save you space and money: space, because you have just the one piece that serves as both dining table and firepit, and money, because you’re not spending on extra items that serve the same function.

Living Green Walls

Get the look: “Use the table wherever you would take your meals. Add comfy chairs that can serve for both dining and s’mores making!”

Vertical planting will save you space and bring life to dull outdoor walls. A plant wall is a vertical collection of plants, flowers or other foliage, which grows on or against a wall. Plant walls are brilliant space-savers as they keep the floor clear and can inject nature and colour into even the smallest terrace or balcony.

Outdoor Kitchens Don’t be stuck in your kitchen preparing food for guests while they bask in the sunshine, create an al fresco kitchen to transports your entire prep, cooking and serving system into the heart of your garden so you don't miss out on a single moment.

Get the look: “One way to create a plant wall is with a ready-made kit. These kits usually consist of panels that can be fitted together to cover whatever size is needed. Choose plants that are easy to grow and don’t grow too big.

Get the look “Create a beautiful and simple space for cooking outside can be created in a 12

Choosing a ride-on mower ! Choosing a ride-on mower !

Grass collection or not, or maybe?

The size of your property is a crucial factor in choosing a ride-on mower. Larger properties typically require more powerful and efficient mowers to cover the area effectively and in less time.

Size of area to be cut..

4. Size of Cutting Deck:

Drive type, automatic (hydrostatic) or manual

The cutting deck determines the width of grass the mower can cut in a single pass. Consider your property's size and layout to determine an appropriate cutting deck size, plus any gates to be passed through.

Here's a breakdown of the key points:

1. Collection of Grass: If you prefer a neat appearance and want to collect grass clippings for disposal or composting, look for mowers with built-in grass collectors. These mowers typically have a bagging system or a rear-mounted bin, they can however be fitted with a mulching plug, so you do not have to collect the grass all the time

5. Manual or Automatic (hydrostatic) Manual mowers require you to shift gears and control the speed manually, while automatic mowers have a continuously variable transmission, similar to an automatic car. Automatic mowers are generally easier to operate, especially for larger areas, as they offer smooth acceleration and speed control, definitely better for the elderly to operate as no pressure needs to be applied..

2. Side Discharge: Some mowers offer a side discharge option where the grass clippings are ejected from the side of the deck. This feature can be useful for cutting longer grass or in areas where you don't need to collect clippings, but can never collect grass

6. Mulcher: A mulching attachment allows the mower to finely chop grass clippings and redistribute them back onto the lawn as natural fertilizer.

3. Acreage to be cut: 30

Our Gardens for larger areas.

This eliminates the need for collecting or disposing of clippings and promotes a healthier lawn.

Smooth acceleration and speed control.

Less manual effort required, particularly for elderly legs!

Allows you to focus more on steering and manoeuvring.

5. Power Source: Ride-on mowers are commonly powered by either petrol engines or batteries. Petrol mowers offer more power and longer runtimes but require regular maintenance. Battery-powered mowers are quieter, produce no emissions, and require less maintenance but have limited runtime depending on the battery capacity.

To make an informed decision, you can consider the factors mentioned above and assess your specific needs. Call The Mower Shack, or please pop in we have 25-35 for sale at anytime and we are proud of our friendly staff, we will assist you in choosing the right ride-on mower that aligns with your requirements and budget.

Advantages of Automatic Mowers: •

Convenient and easy to use, especially

Our Health

‘EARS’ the team!! We would like to introduce you to the newest member of our clinical team – Rachel Wunderlich. Rachel is an experienced audiologist with over 21 years in audiology, most recently with Boots Hearingcare. She has already established herself as a key member of the team and the future growth of the business.

plans were already a foot to expand and Hear in Wombourne opened its doors in June 2021 with Jo’s daughter Sophie at the helm. Sophie’s experience as an audiologist and clinical trainer helped create the idea to build a training facility for likeminded professionals to learn and develop their skills. The Audiology Academy was created and has since gone on to be the training facility of choice amongst audiology professionals across the UK and Ireland with its gold standard approach to training led by Chris Cartwright, Director of Audiology, and his team. Jo’s nephew Wyll joined the family business in 2022 as an HCA, his passion and enthusiasm for all things ears has made him very popular with our clients! We are keen to develop new audiologists and so Wyll will begin his training to become a fully qualified audiologist later this year.

Our journey so far . . .

Hear in Rubery is based within Robinsons Opticians and is proving to be a great choice for a clinic. We work closely with Ian and the optics team to provide a local hearingcare service in a purpose built audiology room. Two great services under one roof!

The idea for a family owned independent Hearingcare service was established in the summer of 2019, 4 summers later and we really have grown! A team of 3 is now 15 and we have plans to open 2 more ‘Hear In’ clinics over the next 18mths

It’s been an exciting journey so far, we can’t wait to share the next chapter with you!

Hear in Hagley, was opened in August 2019 by Jo Miller an audiologist with over 30 years experience in both the NHS and private sector. It soon established itself as a successful clinic offering a full range of hearing and clinical earcare services including the very best in ear wax removal and the latest hearing aid technology.

Bohemian Rapsody Boho as a trend is my favourite during the Summer, kaftans & beads, beautiful baskets & fabulous prints. Monsoon have always done Boho brilliantly, inspired by 1970’s Miami poolside glamour, the palm print dress is the perfect holiday dress, cool to wear, no strap lines, just add new season sliders & this gorgeous basket. Whilst 80% of our 500 pupils are British and local to this area, we are home to a wonderfully cosmopolitan boarding community of students from more than 24 countries, with 100 full-time boarders thriving, growing, and bringing so much to our school.

whose personal skills and talents form their individual learning plan. We aspire for academic achievement and excellence for every pupil. Look at our university destinations, they are excellent. What is often lost in the educational landscape of today, is the importance of knowing a child, ensuring that they are fulfilled in their learning, secure in their relationships and confident in themselves. TC nurtures this and when you meet the pupils, you'll see it. When you meet our staff, you'll understand it.

Located in Tettenhall, the school walls create a beautiful boundary for our pupils and is home to a wonderful campus full of heritage buildings, modern facilities, acres of woodland, playing fields, pitches, and a fullscale Victorian theatre. It is quite possibly one of the most wonderful educational settings within the region.

We want as many children as possible to experience and benefit from all that we deliver. As a registered charity we continue bringing scholarship and bursary opportunities to deserving children. We also ensure that every family who commits to being part of the ‘TC family’ is known and valued.

TC is a school that's thriving. Under its Headmaster Mr Christopher McAllister, pupil numbers have never been healthier. The school is going from strength to strength in its 160th year, with a leadership team that is driven, ambitious and experienced. It’s a team that's bringing the school together to make it greater than the sum of its parts.

The world of today is challenging, TC is committed to ensuring all pupils who experiences its education will be well placed to tackle all that they will face with compassion, gratitude, intelligence, and as a citizen of our global world.

There’s a core set of values followed daily at TC: Ambition, Character, Community, Creativity and Opportunity. Simple statements perhaps, yet values are only meaningful when the children understand their meaning and how they can personally bring them to life in everything they do.

We can't wait to meet you and welcome you to TC. A small number of places for certain year groups remain for September 2023. Please contact our Admissions team for more information - admissions@tettcoll.co.uk

HUNTER’S CHICKEN “A pub favourite” 46

Our Food & Drink

Serves 6

METHOD

Useful Info

Heat the oven to 180oC and bring salted water in the pan to the boil. Add in peeled and chopped potatoes and boil until soft.

Push the potatoes through the ricer into a bowl and then add in the butter, 100ml of double cream, a few gratings of nutmeg and fold in with a spatula to create a smooth mash.

Whilst the potatoes are boiling, lay the slices of charcuterie on top of the chicken breasts. Melt 50g of butter, mince the garlic and chop the parsley then mix together and drizzle over the chicken breasts. Season with a little maldon sea salt and pepper.

Bake the chicken breasts for about 20 minutes or until the centre is 75oC on the probe. If you don’t have a probe, slice one of the chicken breasts underneath to check doneness. (no pinky bits)

Pan fry the mushrooms in olive oil and season. Set aside. In the small pan add 25ml of sherry vinegar, 350ml of chicken stock and 300ml of BBQ sauce. Allow this to reduce down a little. Don’t let the sauce become too thick, you want a nice runny sauce.

When the chicken is cooked top with mozzarella and put back in the oven for 4 to 5 minutes to melt and brown the cheese.

Put on the plate then top with the mushrooms, a nice big dollop of mash and then pour over the sauce.

Serve with green vegetables such as spring greens or stem broccoli.

Our Food & Drink CHEESECAKE

Honeycomb method

Unsalted butter (75g) Digestive biscuits (225g) Full fat cream cheese (775g) Medium free range eggs (6) Soured cream (300g) Lemon juice (1.5 tsp) Vanilla paste (1.5tsp) Cornflour (3 tsp) Doubler cream (100ml)

Line a deep 8” square pan or similar with parchment paper

Heat the sugar and golden syrup together until it forms a golden brown caramel.

Sprinkle in the bicarb soda, whisk in and pour into lined pan and allow to harden.

Equipment

Line a deep 12” cake pan or similar with parchment paper

Melt the butter and blitz the biscuits and then combine well. Press into the cake pan and push up the sides a little and bake for 5 minutes

Add the sugar to your pan with 3 tbsp of water on a low heat and allow to dissolve fully.

Set aside a tbsp of the caramel and put the rest into the bowl of your planetary mixer with the cream cheese and mix until smooth, then add in the eggs, soured cream, vanilla, lemon juice and cornflour and mix again.

Turn up the heat and bring the sugar water to the boil then continue to cook over a medium heat until a deep amber colour is formed. You can swirl the pan around to mix but don’t stir otherwise it will form crystals.

Pour the cheesecake mixture into the lined cake pan, smooth the top over and bake for 50 minutes. It should have a bit of a wobble in the middle. Leave to cool for half an hour then place in the fridge until fully chilled.

To serve garnish with broken chunks of honeycomb, some whipped cream and then warm the left over caramel to loosen and drizzle over the cake. Slice and serve with a dessert wine or coffee.

Experience a little Irish Charm in the city of Cork. by Rebecca Underwood, Travel Journalist

Schull Harbour, Cork Chris Hill

road from the city. The castle dates back to 1446 and was built by Dermot McCarthy, King of Munster. The lower walls are fifteen feet with an angle tower built by the McCarthy’s of Muskerry. The castle was then occupied by Cormac McCarthy, King of Munster, whom it is said, sent four thousand of his men to support the forces of Robert the Bruce at the battle of Bannockburn in 1314. According to legend the Scots gave half of the Stone of Scone to McCarthy in appreciation of his support and this stone was incorporated into the battlements of Blarney Castle. Those who kiss the Blarney Stone, and the majority of visitors do so, are said to be rewarded with the gift of eloquence.

I was most fortunate to encounter a little Irish charm when I opted for a relaxing weekend break in Cork. This intriguing city, located on the banks of the majestic River Lee, is separated into two channels and the centre of the city nestles on an island formed by those channels. To the east of the city centre the channels reunite and quays and docks lead the way into Lough Mahon at the high end of Cork Harbour, one of the world’s greatest natural harbours. A popular spot to visit for a local lunch is the English Market, which has been trading since 1788 and is located on Prince’s Street along the tree- lined Grand Parade. The market attracts hordes of locals and visitors alike and when her majesty Queen Elizabeth II visited in 2011 she was said to be delighted. I browsed along the stalls, crammed with traditional Irish fare and culinary delights from around the world. Settling down on a perch, at one of the stall side counters, I sampled a few slivers of blood sausage, known as 'drisheen', and then tasted ‘battlebord’, a delicious dish of fresh buttered eggs and dried salted ling, followed by a boiled pig’s foot, known as a Crubeen.

Feeling a trifle fatigued after all my excursions, I checked into the sumptuous Hayfield Manor located on Perrott Avenue in the centre of the city. Accommodations are beautifully furnished with tasteful antiques, plush fabrics and comfortable beds with plump pillows, ensuring a deep slumber for weary explorers. I was fortunate to stay in a grand suite, which measures 750 square feet and includes a living room with a three piece suite and a marble fireplace. The large windows flood the space with natural light and provide sweeping views across the manor gardens.

I also visited Blarney Castle, another popular attraction, which is only fifteen minutes by 50

Our Travel Partial to a late night tipple and some traditional Irish music, I went along to 'Sin è' which translates to ‘That’s it’, in reference to the funeral parlour next door! This lively and popular pub, located on Coburg Street, first opened in 1889 and has been presenting ‘live’ traditional Irish music for more than 50 years. The most popular musicians play on Tuesday, Friday and Sunday and you can expect some spontaneous and energetic dancing and singing and I was easily persuaded to join in a hearty rendition of Paddy McGinty’s Goat!

Grand Suite at Hayfield Manor

‘Now Patrick McGinty, an Irishman of note, fell in for a fortune, and he bought himself a goat. Say’s he ‘sure of goat’s milk I’m going to have me fill’, but when he brought the nanny home, he found it was a bill.’ Spend a weekend in Cork and you’ll be charmed. Stourbridge Golfers win Pebble Beach Pro Am Stourbridge golf professional Mark Male along with three amateur golfers, Barry Corbett, Neil Barrett and Simon Markey, all long standing members of Stourbridge Golf Club travelled to the amazing Pebble Beach golf resort to play in the Pro Am competition and returned victorious after three hard fought days of competitive golf. The team from Stourbridge were aware that the competition was going to be very tough as they were to be against top professional golfers some of which had won several European Tour events and had even been ranked in the top 100 in the world at the time. They were going to have to be at the top of their game to be competitive but with all the team clothing sponsored by Arbury Motor Group they at least were going to look the part.

Spyglass Hill course, host to previous US Amateur championships. All advice was this was going to be the most difficult of the courses they were facing. A solid first round 81 points assisted by birdies from Barry and Neil had the team in a creditable 4th place.

Day one was played at the remarkably tough 56

The second day was played at The Links at Spanish Bay where the team had a great day with three birdies from Mark Male and another from Neil to be joint winners on the day with 85 team points and moving them up to second place overall. Going into the decisive final day three points behind the leaders they needed a quick start which came courtesy of an eagle at the par 5 second hole from Mark. Further birdies followed on the 11th and 13th from Neil. Standing on the iconic 18th tee with a tee shot out over the water required, it took some fantastic golf for all three amateurs to par the last and set up a victory by three shots. “This was an absolutely marvellous experience for us, the best we have ever done by far. We referred to it as a trip of a lifetime but it was so good, we must do it again! Thank you to Pro-Amtour.com for some stunning memories never to forget.” 57

Skoda Kodiaq SE L Executive was pleased to see there is no intrusive noise thrown in to the cabin from tyres.

The market place for a family SUV is awash with various models the Skoda Kodiaq should be high on your list, it was after all a 2023 Car Wow Buy It award winner, writes Bob Hickman. It has an abundance of bonus features and essential items. The exterior appearance is one of a large vehicle, and this certainly becomes noticeable when you look at the interior of the vehicle.

The 2-litre diesel automatic, is quite an exceptional vehicle, it has an option of front or a 4-wheel drive and my derivative came with the 4wd complete with a 7-speed automatic gearbox. The quoted power output is 150 p.s. sufficient for a 0-62 in 9.8 seconds and a claimed top speed of 124 mph.

The particular Kodiaq that I had on test was a 7-seater, someone with a large family would enjoy this derivative. Surprisingly the rear 2 seats were actually useable, having said that if you do occupy all 7 seats the luggage capacity is restricted.

Skoda suggests that 50mpg should be obtainable, however, during 700 miles return trip to Scotland it was managed on one tank of fuel and the computer indicated 55mpg which for a vehicle of this size and carrying capacity I think is exceptional.

With it size and height the Kodiaq is a really easy companion, superb visibility all round. The steering is light but not too light on open roads but manoeuvrability in and around town and the elusive car parking space makes for an enjoyable ride. On the motorway the suspension proved to be more than adequate and on pot holed roads it swallowed up the bumps without making too much noise and I

On the motorway the Skoda was an enjoyable, useful friend and companion, on twisty roads despite the size of the Skoda it actually cornered quite well, there is very little rock and roll, having said that if you are carrying 7 passengers you do not want the rear passengers to be overcome by car sickness due to the vagaries of the handling.

Our Motoring to you. There is a virtual cockpit system but I prefer to stick with the digital display so that I know exactly what speed I am doing, and to see miles left, the range and the economy of what we are doing.

Passengers have not been overlooked and it is noticeable that cup holders in the back and also one in the very rear, almost in the boot, if the 2 last seats are incorporated. There was ample head, knee and shoulder room and because the front seats are slightly raised it means that the immediate rear passenger are given that little bit of extra space.

Skoda Kodiaq models will intrigue you by the little hidden features that are included, for example the ice scrapper inside the fuel filler cap, and an umbrella hidden away in the front door, very impressive.

Rear seats are comfortable and what I did like is they can move forward and backwards so if you are not carrying the full 7-seater capacity those in the rear seats have extra space and more space for the boot if you so wish, in 7-seater mode you could get a couple of small overhead locker air craft type suitcases in the boot space. If you drop the last seats down you have a huge amount of capacity especially if you fold all the rear seats down, somebody suggested that you could actually fit a bicycle in there without taking the wheels off, certainly it is a huge van-like carrying capacity if there is just the driver and front passenger.

The all-round parking sensors are an excellent standard feature and the reversing camera that was fitted to my vehicle, makes parking very easy. The Kodiaq range has a 3-year warranty, in addition it has 3-year paint warranty and a 12year body warranty and I am reliably informed that Skoda are now offering flexible servicing options. The Kodiaq as tested with the various extras including the very special Velvet red Metallic paint at an eye watering £1045 was priced at £44960.

The infotainment system works quite well, if you are familiar with the VAG group then a lot of the instrumentation will be like a friend

The Benefits of Clinical Canine Massage for your Dog to complete a full body Swedish massage on my own dog.

There are nearly 13 million dogs living in the UK, which is a 12% increase since ‘Lockdown’. Our four-legged friends are very much part of the family, and there is often nothing we wouldn’t do for them to ensure that they live their very ‘best’ lives.

There is no such thing as a placebo effect for dogs. They either benefit, or they don’t, and it was clear to me that Tilly had certainly benefited from massage both mentally and physically. I couldn’t believe how receptive she had been. I was so excited about the health benefits of massage for dogs, I took the plunge and enrolled for the 2-year Clinical Canine Massage Practitioner Program, changed my career, and became a Clinical Canine Massage Therapist.

Before becoming a ‘dog mum’ some 25 years ago, I wasn’t quite sure how I might get on living with a dog. But from the time my first dog ‘Jamie’ set foot in my home, I couldn’t imagine living life without one. About 9 years ago, one of my dogs, Tilly, developed some challenging health problems. I started researching massage because I wanted to offer her some respite and distraction from her health condition, and it was something I thought she might enjoy. I found a ‘Beginner’s Guide to Canine Massage’ workshop through the Canine Massage Therapy Centre - https://www.k9-massage. co.uk. This one-day workshop taught me how

How does Massage Work? To be able to function effectively, muscles need oxygen and nutrients. It’s our blood circulatory system which transports oxygen, nutrients, and hormones around our body. Exercise and movement increase our heart rate, which in turn increases blood flow around 62

Our Pets the body, but following injury or surgery, we are often unable to exercise properly. Massage mechanically increases blood flow around the body, so if your dog is on enforced crate rest following injury or surgery, massage can aid the recovery process.

Since massage stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, it is also a wonderful way to calm an anxious dog. But don’t take my word for it. The Canine Massage Guild, in conjunction with Winchester University have just undertaken the world’s first clinical trials on Canine Massage. Click on the link to read more about it.

Massage also promotes stimulation of the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system drains fluid from tissues in the body and returns it to the bloodstream. It also removes toxins from the body and absorbs fats and vitamins from the digestive system and transports them to the bloodstream which promotes cell growth. Stimulating the lymphatic system can help to reduce swelling and promotes faster recovery.

What can I expect from a Canine Massage? When treated by a Canine Massage Guild therapist, your dog will receive an in-depth consultation prior to treatment which will include a gait and posture analysis and a full muscular health check to help formulate an individual treatment plan to suit their needs. Following a 40-to-50-minute massage treatment, dependent on the size of your dog, you will be given advice on aftercare.

Massage also stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system which brings the body into a state of calm and relaxation and promotes homeostasis. It also releases endorphins which can help to relieve pain, stress, and improve our sense of wellbeing, as well as stimulating the muscles of our digestive system.

Prior to treatment, clients will need to obtain written consent from their vet in accordance with The Veterinary Surgery (Exemptions) Order 2015, which

How can Massage Benefit my Dog? So how does the science of massage translate for your dog? Because massage helps to move blood and lymph mechanically around the body, it brings oxygen and nutrients to injury sites and helps to remove toxins, thus speeding up the recovery process. It can also help to restore your dog’s mobility, as massage helps to break down scar tissue, which can restrict movement. So, massage is a great way to complement conventional veterinary treatment to speed up recovery from soft tissue injuries and surgery.

stipulates that manipulative therapies such as chiropractic, physiotherapy or massage therapies can only be carried out under the direction and referral of a vet. This ensures that we have all the necessary information regarding your dog’s medical history prior to treatment. A full Veterinary Report will be completed and forwarded to your vet following treatment.

Massage is also a natural form of pain relief and helps to relax tight muscles which can cause painful trigger points. By increasing blood flow and improving mobility, it can help to support chronic orthopaedic conditions like hip and elbow dysplasia, Osteoarthritis, Spondylosis, Luxating Patella or Cruciate Ligament Disease and can address overcompensation issues. 63

Tax Freedom Day: How savvy are you?

Siobhan Record Our Lifestyle’s Financial Expert

and shares ISA.

Tax Freedom Day is the day when Britons stop paying tax and start putting their earnings into their own pocket. In 2022, data from the Adam Smith Institute (ASI) estimated that British taxpayers worked a gruelling 159 days for the taxman before they started earning for themselves. We are effectively working for the government for the first five months of the year!

Pensions – pension contributions attract tax relief at your marginal tax rate and therefore are a great way of reducing your tax bill while at the same time building a fund for the future. Capital Gains Tax Allowance (CGT) – despite the reduction to £6,000 in this tax year and further reduction to £3,000 next tax year, making use of your annual CGT allowance can still help you to save tax on the eventual sale or gift of an asset. On the sale of an asset, married couples and civil partners can also transfer assets into joint names, effectively pooling both tax free allowances.

To keep your Tax Freedom Day as low as possible you must ensure you are using the available tax reliefs as effectively as possible. Is your tax code right? Are you claiming the correct allowances? Are your affairs arranged in the most effective way if you are married and one of you is a non or lower tax payer?

Maximising your available tax allowances can be complex; getting the basics in place will help to make your Tax Freedom Day come as early as possible.

Marriage allowance – you can transfer £1,260 of your unused personal allowance to your husband, wife or civil partner reducing their tax by up to £252.

ISAs - Interest rates have now risen and hence it is all the more important to keep your savings sheltered in a tax-free ISA. You have an ISA allowance of £20,000 each year, which can you use across a cash or stocks
