Step Afrika! visits Clinton Step Afrika! is a professional performance group dedicated to the African American art form of stepping and they performed recently at Clinton Elementary School. The school visit was in advance of the group's performance of its new program, "Drumfolk," at the Lied Center. Step Afrika! blends percussive dance styles practiced by historically African American fraternities and sororities, traditional African dances, and contemporary dance and art forms. The performers read to the students, taught them stepping and shared its cultural history.

The first program was held Wednesday, Sept. 15, and featured local historian Ed Zimmer. The next presentation will be Tuesday, Oct. 19. Follow the experience of LPS children and youth as they navigate the homeless experience while trying to attend school. Ellen Reilly from LPS Homeless Services will examine the McKinney-Vento Act and how LPS addresses the needs of over 300 students and their families who experience homelessness and how you can help to support and identify those students and those at risk.

Members of the LPS Federal Program’s student advocate team will talk about their work with students and families, particularly within the African-American and American Indian communities.

They’ll examine the culturally specific barriers and challenges unique to these communities, as well as how they identify barriers to success and assist these students and families to overcome them.

Wednesday, Jan. 19 “Cultural Perspectives and the Role of LPS Bilingual Liaisons” With the ever-changing demographics within Lincoln Public Schools, currently serving students and families representing 152 countries and speaking 130 languages, LPS must be ready to provide language and cultural support. A panel of LPS Bilingual Liaisons representing seven of the major ethnic groups in this community will provide a glimpse into their roles and responsibilities when working with immigrant and refugee families.

Tuesday, May 17 - “Lincoln Youth Symphony, 65 Years of Musical Excellence” As is tradition, the final Learning Lunch of the school year will feature student music. This year it will be the Lincoln Youth Symphony as it celebrates its 65th anniversary. LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen and the symphony’s director, Clark Potter, will provide the rich history of the symphony and the program will feature a live student performance.

September TeamMates of the Month

Neely and Sarah: Building trust Southwest senior Neely and her TeamMate Sarah look like they could be sisters. Ironically, Neely’s being an only child was one of the reasons a Scott Middle School counselor thought she would appreciate having a TeamMate. “It sounded really fun,” says Neely. “My cousins were in a different mentoring program and I thought, ‘Huh, maybe I should try this.’”

Sarah credits many women who were informal mentors to her as motivation to become a mentor four years ago. “I feel like part of the reason I have gotten as far as I have is because of the other adults in my life,” she says.

Although Neely says she felt excited to be matched, she recalls she was also a reserved eighth grader, grieving the loss of some relatives.

“Maybe you weren’t sure whether you could trust me at first,” offers Sarah. “But we are way past that,” she says, making them both laugh, considering their closeness now.

“You can’t force trust, right? You have to build it,” says Sarah. “And we did.”

Neely was surprised to realize some mutual past experiences, which she found helped her to open up. “She shared stuff about her family and her past with me, so I knew that she’s been through some of the same things as me.”

Both athletes, the pair have discussed balancing sports amongst school, friends, and family.

While Sarah was a cheerleader growing up (and now a fitness instructor), Neely is a talented golfer who has competed in tournaments all over the country.

Neely says golf is just a part of her, and while she loves it, admits it can be stressful. “I’m really hard on myself,” she says. She says Sarah helps her relax by talking through the pressure and offering another perspective. “She’s like, ‘Tell me what happened and I’ll listen and then we’ll digest it.’”

“In all problem solving, we are using her strengths in Neely’s way of living,” says Sarah.

She finds discussing Neely’s strengths happen organically and naturally rather than always explicitly.

“Maybe you weren’t sure whether you could trust me at first,” offers Sarah. “But we are way past that,” she says, making them both laugh, considering their closeness now.

They look forward to taking the CliftonStrengths assessments this year, provided by a partnership between TeamMates and Gallup.

Whatever Neely’s top five may be, Sarah is confident they will continue to serve her well.

“Neely is so organized. She is on top of it. She has goals; she has dreams. She’s motivated and a good human.”

After graduation, Neely plans to pursue early childhood education and play golf at the collegiate level. Until then, they’ll keep meeting weekly at Southwest, enjoying each other’s company and chatting away. “Have we ever done an activity?” Sarah asks her TeamMate amusingly.

“We just talk!”

LPS is hiring for bus positions now!

Lincoln Public Schools is still hiring bus drivers and bus paraeducators for the 2021-22 school year. LPS still want to hire roughly 20 drivers and 30 paras.

Drivers and paras receive on-the-job, paid training, as well as up to $1000 in bonuses the first year. Both positions offer a stable salary and great benefits - but that’s not all.

“These jobs really offer people a chance to make a positive difference in the lives of children and families.” said LPS Director of Transportation Ryan Robley. “You’ll be joining a committed team of professionals and working for a school district that not only cares about its children, but its employees, as well.”

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Storage Materials Management When it comes to managing waste in our schools, we have district-wide programs in place for our standard materials such as paper, cardboard and even food scraps. But storage rooms and basements across the district may accumulate unused items such as VHS tapes, furniture or toys. What happens to those materials? When Everett Elementary School needed to clear out a large basement storage area to make room for a new mechanical room, the LPS Sustainability team was able to assist with this process and develop standard storage materials management procedures.

Items were separated into these categories: 1. LPS property to be returned to the Distribution Center for reuse or recycling 2. Hazardous waste to be managed by the LPS Environmental Department 3. Items available for donation 4. Recycling 5. Landfill

LPS BUILDING CLEANOUT PROCEDURE Follow these procedures during school or office area clean outs in order to reduce, reuse, or recycle the majority of material. All office and school clean outs should be coordinated with administrative and custodial staff.

When reusing and discarding materials, the priority of reusing and discarding should be as follows: distribution center, hazardous waste, donations, recycle, then landfill waste.

Distribution Center All LPS property with an LPS tag must be returned to the Distribution Center for surplus. All unused electronics and curriculum materials should be sent to the distribution center to be reused properly.

Hazardous Waste If you have chemicals/cleaners/paints/aerosol cans/etc. that are no longer needed or wanted please do NOT discard in the regular trash. Follow the procedure below to have LPS Environmental Department remove your items from the building: Step 1: Create a list of what you have including the product name, number of containers, and quantity (i.e. Two, half-gallon bottles of Elmer’s glue).

It can be easy to look at these storage areas and feel overwhelmed, and in the past this may have led to all of the items being thrown into a roll off container destined for the landfill. The new procedures give simple steps for schools to keep those items out of the landfill and give them a second life when possible. Through donations to Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity, Everett was able to divert 4,120 pounds of material from the landfill. In addition to diverting waste through reuse, approximately 500 pounds of materials were recycled.

This is a great reminder to think about what items we may have in our homes that could be reused or recycled as well! The City of Lincoln Recycling website has information on options for reducing, reusing and recycling in the community.

Step 2: Contact your custodial supervisor or the main office and have them put in a TMA Work Request for you. They will need two pieces of information. (1) the list of items you don't need, and (2) the room number where the items will need to be picked up from.

The (TMA) work order request field needs to include "HAZMAT: Please pick up chemicals for disposal; Attn: Environmental Dept." AND the list of items.

Step 3: Put items in a box and label with tape or a piece of paper saying “Chemical Waste for Disposal - Attn: Environmental".

DO NOT send items through the school mail. A list of items MUST accompany the TMA Work Request.

An Environmental Staff member will pick up the items from your building and dispose of them properly. Any questions can be directed to the Environmental Office at Operations, 402-436-1072.

Donate Designate which items can be reused, repurposed, or donated. All of the organizations below are able to pick up donations on a ground floor level. Options for donations are not limited to these organizations. Call and/or email the following

The challenges of change Being forced to change the way one has to live is never easy and always subject to spirited debate. I understand that. As a young person growing up in New York, I well remember my father (a proud New York police officer) being incredibly upset at two changes he vehemently disagreed with – seatbelts in cars and the elimination of public smoking on airplanes. He often told me that he didn’t fight in World War II to have his rights as an American limited. I think the discussions we had at our dinner table influenced my desire to become a history teacher, as I desired to learn more about his generation and why certain social changes were often met with controversy. It helps me understand our challenges today, especially regarding masks.

Truth be told, nobody likes to wear masks. However, we believe that our ability to keep students in school and our classrooms open is tied to requiring masking all of our students and employees. The decision to mandate masks in compliance with the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department’s Directed Health Measure was not without much internal and external debate. At the end of the day, however, we believe our responsibility is to the collective safety of more than 50,000 human beings.

Despite objections from some in the community, the “science” we follow is that of our local medical professionals and health department. We also relied on our past success in avoiding major building closures last year due to spread. That tells us that masks, distancing and hand washing were the key factors. We also are aware that a mask only on one person is not going to be as effective in reducing spread as masks on all persons. Thus, requiring masking of all is our best strategy at this time.

Our hope is to have the masks removed as quickly as the medical professionals feel it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we appreciate the tremendous support we receive from our parents, students, staff and community.

While we are debating how to keep our students and staff safe during the pandemic, others are worried about loved ones in Afghanistan during the Taliban takeover of the country. Our bilingual liaisons reached out directly to the families impacted by the news and provided them with resources and supports. We understand this news also impacts those in the military (and their families) who served numerous tours in Afghanistan over the last 20 years. LPS embraces our staff, students and families who are feeling the impact of recent events.

The opening days of school were exciting as we saw many students, parents and staff eager to begin. I so enjoy those moments and know that the experiences our staff provide for children will create lasting memories. We welcomed more than 300 new and eager teachers this year, which is about average for the last decade. We are truly fortunate to be able to recruit, develop and retain outstanding educators and leaders.

It is also exciting to see construction progressing on the new Northwest High School and Robinson Elementary School. They are beginning to look like school buildings ready for students and staff. Next fall will be an exciting time for students and families in those communities. The fall of 2023 will also bring the opening of Standing Bear High School in south Lincoln.

I close by thanking our parents, staff and community members who continue to believe in and support the public school mantra of “all means all.” We will get through this pandemic and LPS will continue to provide high quality educational experiences for all of our students.

Northeast, Mickle build on 60 year bond High schools and their feeder middle schools within Lincoln Public Schools strive to build strong connections. It can ease the transition to high school, build school spirit and help establish a shared culture.

There’s no better example of this than Lincoln Northeast High School and Mickle Middle School, located only a half-mile apart on either side of North Cotner Boulevard. Their strong connection spans all the way back to when Mickle opened in 1960 and was named for longtime Northeast Principal Robin S. Mickle.

Mickle first-year Principal Jason Shanahan noticed the connection immediately.

“One of the first things that has become apparent to me is the strong connection and pride both schools share for the northeast Lincoln community. I very much like the feeling of serving a community within the community, and that is exactly what we have here,” Shanahan said, adding that many Mickle teachers attended both Mickle and Northeast and jumped at the chance to work at their middle school alma mater.

Keri Applebee is in her fourth year as principal at Northeast. She’s noticed an “important and special bond” between the two schools.

“I believe it is essential for high schools and middle schools to foster and build these important connections with one another because ultimately it is what is best for kids,” she said. “Partnerships allow for early opportunities to build positive relationships with incoming high school students. And as we all know, positive relationships are absolutely critical in helping students have successful transitions to their high school.”

Shanahan added, “By establishing a strong bond with a high school, we afford ourselves a longer runway to work with kids. We essentially go from having them for three short years, to establishing a partnership and culture that students can flourish in for seven years of their academic career.”

Applebee and Shanahan met this summer to discuss how they could establish intentional opportunities for Mickle and Northeast to further strengthen their schools’ historic connection.

One idea came to fruition Aug. 20 when the Northeast marching band’s drumline welcomed Mickle students as they arrived in the morning.

They heard the rat-a-tat-tat of drums as it filled the air.

And for most of them, they heard their future calling.

COLLEGE PREP 12 Things Seniors Need to Know

Having a “game plan” and being organized can eliminate a lot of stress and make your college journey much more enjoyable!

Here are some things to consider: Find your voice. Advocating for yourself is the first step in becoming a responsible adult! Learn to promote yourself, get involved, and showcase what you have to offer to others!

Stay on top of assignments, deadlines, and commitments.

While in college, it’s your responsibility to be organized. Start now by setting reminders on your phone, and carry a planner with you to ensure that you don’t miss any important dates.

Think about your future career.

What are your interests and what classes are you good at?

Explore majors that will lead to

your future career. There are six major career fields, but there are countless jobs that you can pursue under each of those fields. Check out this list of sites to explore careers Apply for colleges that offer your major –Talk to College reps who visit your school, research college websites, and use College Profiles to help you find colleges that offer majors you are interested in. Begin applying to college(s) early in the fall of your senior year of high school, and keep your options open!

Figure out how to pay for school.

Attend a virtual Financial Aid presentation hosted by EducationQuest. You’ll learn about the types of financial aid available to help pay for college and receive information on completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

You could even win a $500 scholarship toward college for attending!

Talk to your professors about careers in your major. College professors typically have the best knowledge of what you can do with your degree, and often have connections to help you secure internships or future employment.

Participate in internships to build your résumé. In college, you’ll want to complete an internship prior to your graduation. This will give you the opportunity to gain some valuable hands-on experience and make you more marketable in your job search.

So much will change over the next 4 to 6 years. Remember that college is supposed to be the “time of your life”. This is where people typically figure out who they really are and what they believe in. Friends will change, your perspective on different topics might change, but that’s all part of maturing.

Some of the best parts of college don’t happen in the classroom – You’re going to experience so many firsts while in college. Embrace the fact that you’re adulting and able to make some decisions on your own. Go on adventures, make new friends and remember, life begins at the end of your comfort zone!

Finding the Right College Courtesy of Education Quest These steps will help juniors narrow their college choices, and will help seniors prepare for the college application process.

Step 1: Research colleges.

Start by asking your school counselor for college-search advice and resources. Here are other things you can do: • Learn about the types of colleges and their degrees.

• Talk to admission representatives when they visit your high school.

• Attend a College Fair or Educational Planning Program where you can talk to college representatives.

• Use our College Profiles to match colleges with your interests.

• Another good resource is BigFuture from the College Board.

• Explore the websites of colleges that interest you.

Step 2: Go on campus visits.

• This is the most important step you can take to determine if a school is the right fit for you!

• Start your visits in the spring of your junior year and revisit your top choices in the fall of your senior year.

• Contact the admissions office at least two weeks in advance to schedule a campus visit.

• Visit while school is in session. You won’t get the full campus experience during school breaks, finals week, or summer.

• Meet with an admissions representative and financial aid counselor to discuss how to apply and pay for college.

• Ask to meet with faculty in your areas of interest.

• Ask a lot of questions!

Step 3. Narrow your college choices.

Now that you’ve done your research and gone on campus visits, it’s time to compare notes and pick your top college choices. Compare schools based on academic programs, size, location, career preparation, internships, and social climate.

If you attend a community college, you may be required to take the Accuplacer or Companion placement tests.

Step 5. Apply for admission.

Be aware of deadlines and apply to your top 3-4 colleges in the fall of your senior year. Most will require: • The application and fee • Official high school transcripts which will show: • Your grade point average and/or class rank • That you completed high school coursework • ACT/SAT test scores If your school conducts an Apply2College event, you’ll get help with your applications during the school day. Step 6: Create a student portal.

Once you’re accepted for admission, the college will instruct you to create an online student account/portal for communications about financial aid, admissions, or other college-related matters.

Step 4. Take college entrance exams.

Step 7: Select a college.

You’ll take the ACT in the spring of your junior year, and you may want to take the SAT as well. Retake the exam(s) in the summer and fall – colleges will use your best score for scholarship and admission decisions. You also have the option of retaking a single subject of the ACT.

In the spring of your senior year, compare your top colleges and make your final decision. Then, complete these tasks: • Sign up for your college’s online student account or portal.

• Submit the application form and deposit for campus housing.

• Register for new-student orientation.

• Notify the other schools of your decision and decline their awards.

• Apply for student and/or parent loans, if needed.

Visit ACT and College Board for sample questions, test dates, registration, and fees.

Making it through the season of candy

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness October is the unofficial kick-off to the season of sweetness.

Mind you, much of the fall candy has been in our stores since July. We know how tempting it is for we as adults, so likely our kids may have even bigger struggles. In reality, this season often runs through Valentine’s Day or May Day, depending on your family and neighborhood culture. Yep, five to eight months of the year.

Is candy such a big deal? Truly, all foods should be able to fit into a healthy eating plan. It’s more about the volume, the timing and the frequency. A piece of candy, every once in a while, can be just fine. Though if your child and/or family are dealing with dental issues, weight issues, diabetes or other health management, the times and ways you include those sweet items may have an impact.

Here’s the great news. Due to food allergies and other health-related issues, it’s extremely rare that students in LPS are receiving food-related awards, including candy. That said, other supports around your children may be less aware, such as daycares or clubs they attend. I used to be amazed at the amount of candy used as rewards in our youth church activities, for example. Ask questions.

Here are some other tips that might help take a bite out of candy season for you: • Wait until as close to the holiday as possible to purchase any treats. It will avoid the freshness-testing and rebuying cycle we have all experienced.

• Don’t breach the seal. Once that seal is broken, our resilience weakens. Keep that puppy closed!

• Avoid going to the store when hungry or extra-stressed. You know, those times when our resilience is weakened and it’s not hard to convince ourselves that we need a reward.

• Consider alternatives such as popcorn packets and bottled water. I’ve had kids come to my door trick or treating saying they heard we had bottled water and were actually excited. Trick or treating is thirsty work.

• Buy items less tempting to you. For example, if I offer sour candy items along with other options listed above, they hold zero temptation for me. You know you.

• Consider using non-food items more often as rewards.

Kids love little items that can be bought at dollar sections or stores. Even better, they hold over from season to season.

• Set guidelines in your household, then stick to them. It might be that they are allowed a certain amount per day or that they sort through and choose a certain number of pieces. Each family manages this differently. Our method was to count the pieces and have them donate a portion of it, getting to pick out their favorites. Keep the best, leave the rest, is our reoccurring theme.

• Keep it out of sight. As busy humans, we tend to eat whatever is most convenient for us. If we have fruit sitting on our counter, we are more likely to eat it than if it is tucked away in a crisper drawer. Gosh, maybe that’s the best place to store holiday treats, as people rarely look in there!

Again, a less nutritious treat now and then is fine. It’s more about finding the balance and teaching our kids about what that balance can look like to build a healthy future. Here’s wishing you and your family a happy, healthy and successful season of sweetness.

No cavities? Secrets to better dental results

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Especially with the changes in the world these past 18 months, more cavities and increased deep cleaning needs are being noticed by dental offices. How can we help our kids have dental visits become a routine, no-big-deal positive experience?

Build in brushing to morning and night routines. Until about age seven, dentists recommend assisting and/or supervising brushing for kids, as they are unlikely to hit all surfaces with those brushes.

Spin brushes can make the job a bit easier if you have them, no matter the age. Even if your family is staying home, make sure this routine happens - for them and for you.

Drinking water across the day.

In schools, most students are allowed to have water bottles with them throughout the day. Do what you can to promote water at snacks and between meals at home. The rinsing of the teeth that happens from drinking water can greatly support dental health.

Behold the power of snacks. We often think of sweet, sticky snacks as the main cavity culprit, but how often do you consider crackers, chips and salty snacks? They are major cavity culprits if they are allowed to stick around on tooth surfaces, just like sweet snacks, because they feed the bacteria in our mouth that leads to cavities. Again, brushing after snacks, drinking water or even them rinsing out their mouth following snack time can help.

Timing is everything with drinks.

Every once in a while, we might crave a sweetened drink. Having those with a meal is actually better for your teeth than having them solo. Why? The shorter time these bathe our teeth, the less damage they cause. You are much better to have a sweet drink with a meal and be done with it, instead of sipping one all afternoon, continually bathing your teeth in sugar. Keep that water flowing between meals. If you are struggling to kick the habit, switch off between flavored drinks and water to give your teeth a chance and use sugar or calorie-free options for flavored beverages.

Pay attention to the teeth of your youngest child. If they are often taken along to activities and are kept busy with drinks and snacks throughout an extended period, they might be more likely to fall prey to more dental issues. This can also lead them to be pickier at meals. When meals are delayed due to family activities, be sure to have water be the drink for the road and when you can, pack more items such as fruits and veggies for those on-the-go snacks. Using snack items that you might be likely to serve them at meals helps you keep their nutrition habits on track.

Keep preventative appointments in place. If you’ve lost your dentist visit groove, get back on track. Waiting may only lead to more expensive and potentially uncomfortable issues. If kids can have more “no problems” visits, it may help them have dental appointments in the future be a much more positive experience.

Give me a break! Tips to shake off tension

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT LPS District Wellness Now more than ever, incorporating both mental and physical breaks within the day is important. Giving yourself a chance to shake off the tension and refocus can do us all a world of good.

You might notice your student bringing home or talking about some football themed activity sheets that focus on moving more.

With the limited football season last year, LPS Wellness had the feeling people might be ready to boost their power with some football themed fun.

This fall, LPS continues to focus on finding meaningful ways to incorporate movement and mental breaks into learning. To add some pep to this movement, LPS Wellness has provided all schools with resources to help give both students and staff a way to boost their power through brain boosting breaks.

Students will complete bingo cards, do scavenger hunts and potentially take part in spirit week activities focused on brain boosting breaks. Not all breaks are about increasing heart rate. Staff will be using both energy expending movement breaks as well as activities that work toward calm and focus.

If you happen to have students in the K-8 realm, one fun, free resource that you can utilize at home is www.gonoodle.com. Once you register and pick an avatar, your student can continue using both the activating and calming brain breaks. With each activity completed, the avatar morphs a bit, which students absolutely love. One added bonus of Go Noodle is it is designed to be completed in tight spaces such as classrooms, so it can be a great way for your student to blow off some steam while staying indoors on poor weather days.

One other creative activity we offer students is to make a game out of five “found” objects, anything from

the environment where they are.

Then they teach others how to play.

It could be an obstacle course or other means of creative play, but it both stimulates the brain and activates the body. Once my sons came up with a wacky version of table tennis using movie CD cases as paddles. Another time they invented a game where they blended soccer ball juggling and basketball.

Have fun joining in when you can and giving yourself a break. We all need one now and then. Fire up your silly and see what can happen.

Southwest Spanish teacher honored with courage and excellence in education award Lincoln Southwest High School Spanish teacher James Hill has been honored with the 2021 Christa McAuliffe Prize for Courage and Excellence in Education.

“He makes his students feel better about Spanish and what they can accomplish in Spanish.

Personally, I have countless examples of where Jim took one of my students who struggled in Spanish, and with extra time and hard work, got the student to perform at a higher level than the student ever anticipated.”

The annual award, presented by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s College of Education and Human Sciences, recognizes a Nebraska teacher who exemplifies the character of McAuliffe, the first teacher in space, who died in the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster.

Hill can also be found supporting his students at sporting events, performances and other school activities. This allows him to better know his students and lets them know he cares about them as individuals, not just students in a Spanish class.

It’s the third time in five years that an LPS teacher has won the award.

"Being the recipient of the Christa McAuliffe award for Courage and Education is a great honor, especially following a year that was as challenging as the 2020-21 school year,” Hill said. “In reality, this award could have gone to nearly any educator across the globe for making last year work, and I honestly just feel privileged to be included in the same category as those who have received it before me."

Hill was also honored with a formal resolution at the Sept. 14 Lincoln Board of Education meeting.

Those who nominated Hill said he is known for

meeting students where they are in the curriculum and taking their learning further than they thought possible. He constantly tinkers with his craft, trying new strategies to better activate the learning process. When one of his students is struggling, he is quick to individualize the learning process to help advance their knowledge.

“Once a student has Mr. Hill, they do not want any other Spanish teacher,” said one nominator.

“Mr. Hill is committed to providing students with a highly engaging instructional experience,” another nominator said. “He goes above and beyond to build positive relationships with each of his students, using what he learns about who they are to tailor his instruction to their individual strengths and interests.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hill was one of the first teachers to welcome students back into the building, was vocal about the need for evaluating the progress of all learners, and helped other teachers determine the best way to achieve their objectives under such unprecedented circumstances.

Board of Education passes 2021-22 budget The Lincoln Board of Education at its Sept.

14 meeting voted to approve the proposed 2021-22 budget.

LPS is again making reductions to keep the budget relatively flat, representing the second consecutive year of budget reductions. That requires a reduction of approximately 1.8% in every area to balance the planned budget growth through salaries, benefits, fixed costs and the start-up cost for new schools.

The goal is to ensure programming and staffing decisions are sustainable and stable over time.

This is a residential property revaluation year, and property valuation increases in 2021 will lead to major reductions in State Equalization Aid for 2022-23. In the past, LPS used the residential revaluation year to add to the cash reserve - a practice that offsets the negative impact of State Equalization Aid dropping significantly the following year. Since 2019, LPS experienced a significant drop in State Equalization Aid - approximately $30 million. It is possible that state equalization could drop $10-20 million next year.

The LPS approved budget totals about $463 million, an expenditure budget increase of one-half of one percent. Currently, the preliminary budget proposal provides a decrease of one penny in the overall property tax levy.

NEW EDUCATOR SPOTLIGHT Ana Garbison

Building/Department: Campbell Elementary School Teaching Assignment/Role: 3rd grade Why did you want to become an educator? I became an educator because I wanted to inspire and grow young minds and help students find their passions.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? My favorite part has been working with everyone in Lincoln Public Schools. Everybody has the same goal for all of our students and we are all continuously improving.

Did you attend Lincoln Public Schools as a student? If so, which school(s)? I attended Everett, Morley and Lux. Where did you attend college? University of Nebraska-Lincoln What is your favorite part of being an educator? My favorite part about being an educator is when I see a student that has worked so hard at a certain topic and then they finally get it! It's amazing to see their smile get so big and they are so proud of themselves. That is my favorite part.

What is a fun fact about you? I have been dancing at the same studio since I was 8!

Steven Nevarez

Building/Department: Lincoln Northeast High School Teaching Assignment/Role: Social studies Why did you want to become an educator? Growing up I always knew I wanted a career that involved helping people and making the world a better place. During my freshman year of college, when I was trying to figure out what exactly that would be, I began reflecting on the people that had the biggest impact on me growing up. To me it was my social studies teachers, and the rest is history (pun intended).

Toni Tupper

Building/Department: Lincoln High School, Special Education Teaching Assignment/Role: High School Life Skills Why did you want to become an educator? I wanted to become an educator because I wanted to be a difference maker in the lives of kids. I had many teachers throughout my school career who I had great relationships with. I wanted to be that person for as many students as I could be.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? My favorite part of working for LPS is working alongside great people. I have formed great friendships with my colleagues and I know they are always here for me when I need help.

Did you attend Lincoln Public Schools as a student? If so, which school(s)? Yes. Riley Elementary School, Mickle Middle School, Lincoln Northeast High School Where did you attend college? University of Nebraska-Lincoln (undergrad) & University of Nebraska at Kearney (grad school to get certified) What is your favorite part of being an educator?

My favorite part of being an educator is witnessing my students succeed in something they have been working so hard on.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? My favorite part about working for LPS is the incredible support that they offer their teachers and how welcoming every single person in the district is. If I ever have a question or issue I know all I have to do is ask a colleague and I will be pointed in the right direction.

What is your favorite part of being an educator? My favorite part about being an educator is the relationships that I get to develop with students. I believe that every student deserves to have a teacher that genuinely enjoys their presence in the classroom and makes learning fun. It is my goal to be that teacher for as many of my students as possible.
