Honoring history at Standing Bear High School Lincoln Public Schools on Oct. 7 held the official groundbreaking ceremony for the new Standing Bear High School scheduled to open in fall 2023 at the corner of 70th Street and Saltillo Road in the southeast corner of the city.

Elected officials, LPS administrators and community members were joined by members of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and several direct descendants of Chief Standing Bear, some of whom drove from as far as Columbus, Neb., to attend the historic event.

“To have someone like Chief Standing Bear from our tribe be picked is just a huge honor for our people,” said Larry Wright Jr., chairman of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska and one of the event’s speakers. “And I think really for natives in general, to have a school named after one of our own and to know that everybody that comes through those doors will learn about that name and who he was, what he represents and who we are today.”

Other speakers also stressed the historical significance of the construction of a new high school named after Chief Standing Bear.

“Today will go down in Lincoln history as we break tradition by naming a high school not by direction but instead to honor a heroic person who so justly deserves this honor,” said Lincoln Board of Education President Connie Duncan.

“We gather today to celebrate, to reflect and to remember that we are on land which for centuries has been and still today is and into the future will be the homeland to indigenous peoples,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel.

Page B3 Lincoln Board of Education Member Bob Rauner was the chair of the naming committee that unanimously decided on Standing Bear High School. He thanked his fellow committee members, as well as Wright.

“I really want to thank Larry for the discussions we had,” Rauner said. “We talked about what the implications of this are and how it can be a teaching opportunity, which is of course what we’re all about.”

Standing Bear High School is one of two high schools along with Lincoln Northwest High School, set to open in 2022 - that are made possible through a $290 million bond issue that Lincoln voters overwhelmingly passed in 2020. The bond issue also included funds for a new elementary school in northeast Lincoln and several other major school improvement projects throughout the city.

Learning Lunch series is back for 2021-22 The annual Lincoln Public Schools Learning Lunch series is back after a year off and this year it will be virtual! The next presentation will be Wednesday, Nov. 17. Each monthly Learning Lunch this school year will typically be held on the third Wednesday of the month (full schedule below). It can be accessed on the front page of LPS.org shortly before the beginning of the program.

The presentations begin at noon, with questions-and-answers at roughly 12:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Jan. 19 “Cultural Perspectives and the Role of LPS Bilingual Liaisons” With the ever-changing demographics within Lincoln Public Schools, currently serving students and families representing 152 countries and speaking 130 languages, LPS must be ready to provide language and cultural support. A panel of LPS Bilingual Liaisons representing seven of the major ethnic groups in this community will provide a glimpse into their roles and responsibilities when working with immigrant and refugee families.

Services will examine the McKinney-Vento Act and how LPS addresses the needs of over 300 students and their families who experience homelessness and how you can help to support and identify those students and those at risk.

Wednesday, March 23 “Sustainability at LPS: Connecting Facilities, Students, and Community Through Climate Action” Learn about the LPS Sustainability Programs that are supporting green school initiatives in the areas of waste, energy, water, transportation and air quality. LPS Sustainability Coordinator Brittney Albin will show how there are plenty of ways to get involved at our schools, just in time for Earth Day in April.

Wednesday, April 20 “How Does Science Really Work? Dogs and Turnips.”

In the wake of the pandemic, science has certainly been put under the microscope. Engage in an activity with LPS Science Curriculum Specialist Betsy Barent that will deepen your understanding about what science is and what it isn't - and you’ll have some fun, too!

Tuesday, May 17 - “Lincoln Youth Symphony, 65 Years of Musical Excellence” As is tradition, the final Learning Lunch of the school year will feature student music. This year it will be the Lincoln Youth Symphony as it celebrates its 65th anniversary. LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen and the symphony’s director, Clark Potter, will provide the rich history of the symphony and the program will feature a live student performance.

October TeamMates of the Month

Michal and Mike: Someone I Can Trust It doesn’t feel like you’re in a school building when you’re in the TeamMates room at Moore Middle School. Moore’s TeamMates facilitator, Bob Ruisinger, has assembled the ultimate lounge, where matches can choose from ping-pong, foosball, arcade-style basketball and even a miniature pool table.

On Thursday mornings, you’ll find eighth-grader Michal and his TeamMate, Mike, dueling over ping-pong. However, their love of games comes in fourth on Michal’s list of their commonalities.

“One, we wear hearing aids. Two, we have the same name. Three, we agree on different things.”

Michal and Mike first met in 2017 at Pyrtle Elementary School.

Michal recalls feeling a little confused initially as to what they were going to do in their weekly meetings. Pretty quickly, though, “he was raring and ready to go,” says Mike.

The pair have had no challenge in finding activity ideas. They invented a tennis ball wall-toss game, played basketball and floor hockey in the gym, put together puzzles, and even completed a volcano kit. Occasionally they’ll go with classic board games such as checkers and chess. When the pandemic school closure caused them to switch to Zoom, Michal created a modified checkers game he could screen-share and operate.

Conversation topics vary as much as their activity choices, but one unique subject they have enjoyed exploring is weather systems. Michal loves the “Storm Chasers” docuseries and has watched all five seasons three separate times. “I really got a kick out of it,” he says.

With the help of TeamMates, Mike was able to refer Michal and his mother to contact a previous coworker of his who now heads Lancaster County’s Emergency Management for a tour to see various weather systems. “That was an awesome opportunity,” Michal recalls.

Mike envies his mentee’s knowledge of weather, science and math, but also commends Michal’s personal characteristics. “I’m always there for someone if they need help,” Michal explains.

“It’s a whole period to get out of class to do something fun, and I’m with someone I can trust and respect.”

“I’ve seen him in action,” confirms Mike. “Once, somebody dropped their books in the hallway. He ran right over and helped them pick everything up.”

Michal appreciates his mentor highlighting his strengths. “He gives me confidence and appreciation,” Michal says, which he finds helps him maintain a positive attitude throughout the school day.

They agree they are both generally optimistic people and always look forward to their joyful visits. “When you see a kid running down the hallway when he knows that you just got there, it lights up your day,” says Mike.

“It’s a whole period to get out of class to do something fun,” jokes Michal, adding sincerely, “and I’m with someone I can trust and respect.”

Southwest librarian wins inaugural state award The Nebraska School Librarians Association (NSLA) has named Sara Friest of Lincoln Southeast High School the 2021 Nebraska School Librarian of the Year. The award is in its inaugural year and recognizes outstanding work in the school library field. The award’s criteria are based on an individual’s demonstrated creativity and innovation in the profession through instructional opportunities and programming.

Friest was nominated by Joy Harvey and Emily Jacobs from the Lincoln Public Schools Library Services Department.

In their nominations, they said that Friest “has worked hard to make the library an inclusive and fun place for all students.”

One way she’s done this is by collaborating with Southeast English teacher Julie Krueger to create a monthly program called “Community of Learners,” in which they collaborate with students

to plan games, crafts, photo booths and other activities with the goal of creating a sense of community and friendship.

The award was presented to Friest at the Southeast library on Oct. 15 by Mandy Peterson of the NSLA. Also on hand were Jacobs, LPS Director of Library Services Chris Haeffner, Southeast administrators and Krueger’s class.

“The Southeast library is the place to be and that is because of her hard work, dedication and vision,” Haeffner said during the surprise award presentation.

The NSLA’s Peterson echoed that sentiment. “Sara is a tremendous example of a modern school librarian and the value school librarians bring to the table. It is evident from the time I was able to spend with her, her coworkers and her students in the school library that she is doing great things. We are wildly proud of her.”

Welcome Center changes location When any Lincoln Public Schools employee is asked to describe their educational philosophy, a phrase you're likely to hear is "All means all."

LPS wraps its arms around every student and embraces their uniqueness.

There’s no better example of this than the LPS Welcome Center, which opens its doors to embrace families and students from around the world. The Welcome Center serves hundreds of families year-round.

“No matter where they come from, no matter what cultural perspectives they bring and no matter what languages they speak, we want them to know that they are welcome here,” said LPS Cultural Specialist and Bilingual Liaison Coordinator Oscar Rios Pohirieth.

Now LPS can even better serve those families and students. The Welcome Center recently moved from Park Middle School to a new location at 70th and X streets. The new location offers more space for LPS staff to meet with immigrant families as they enroll in LPS. “This location will help us build the trust and engagement of our families,” said LPS Director of Federal Programs Linda Hix. “The ability to meet with three family groups at the same time allows students to get started at school as soon as possible.”

LPS has a diverse student population, with roughly 2,500 English Language Learners. These students and their families represent 152 different countries and speak 130 different languages. For many immigrant families, the Welcome Center is their introduction to not only LPS but Lincoln.

LPS works closely with resettlement agencies

such as Lutheran Family Services and Catholic Social Services to know when there are new students ready to be enrolled. Other times families go directly to the Welcome Center.

“Either way, the acculturation and integration process for new Americans starts at the Welcome Center,” Rios Pohirieth said.

Middle school art teacher honored as state’s best A Lincoln Public Schools middle school art teacher has been named the best in the state.

The Nebraska Art Teachers Association recently honored Pound Middle School art teacher Shelby Rix as the 2021 Middle School Art Teacher of the Year. She also was honored with a formal resolution at the Oct. 12 Lincoln Board of Education meeting.

“It is something really special to be acknowledged by your peers, especially after the year we have all had. I have a lot of people who have helped me in my time of teaching, from my grandma who did crafts with me as a kid to my college professors I still keep in contact with and all of the hard-working humans in LPS who I love dearly and get to work with,” said Rix, who taught at Mickle Middle School prior to this year. “I love my middle school kids. They are going through such a unique time in their lives. I hope that each student who walks into my classroom knows that they are seen, they are valued, and that they are special in their own way.”

One of her nominators for the award, Mickle Instructional Coordinator Jason Brunott, had high praise for Rix and her dedication to teaching.

“Shelby strives to do her best as an art educator and challenges her students to reach their full potential. Her willingness to take suggestions, modify lessons and experiment with new strategies demonstrates her motivation and growth related to teaching and learning,” Brunott said. “Shelby takes pride in teaching the visual arts. She exhibits a growth mindset, as she is always looking to improve lesson design and instruction. Ultimately, she consistently provides opportunities for students to enjoy and focus on the journey through the art-making process.”

Building/Department: Dawes Middle School Teaching Assignment/Role: English Why did you want to become an educator? I wanted to become an educator to show students that they are capable of so much and that they are deserving of a quality education.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? My favorite part of working for LPS so far has been all of the professional development opportunities I’ve been given because they help me become a better teacher.

Building/Department: West Lincoln Elementary Teaching Assignment/Role: Special Education - Behavioral Why did you want to become an educator? My own personal childhood is very relatable to the students I get to help.

I understand where they come from and what their struggles and successes are. I enjoy making the connections and building those relationships with the students to let them know they’re safe and cared for. I also enjoy giving them the right amount of “push” they need to continue being successful. Knowledge is power. I want the students to know they have access/the opportunity to become, do and be better - not bitter - with their lives.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? I really enjoy how the whole district is supportive with new teachers. I love that I am able to contact anybody and everybody when I need help with something. Also, I really appreciate how the district holds high expectations for everybody to follow and ensures that their teachers are able to meet those expectations with proper support. I love how the staff at West Lincoln Elementary - actually, all the schools I went to - are so open to helping others and are comfortable with answering my hundreds of questions that I bombard them with.

Where did you attend college? Hastings College What is your favorite part of being an educator? My favorite thing about being an educator would be building those relationships with the students, staff, parents, etc. I enjoy getting to know the students, what their passion is, and giving them the tools to achieve their dreams in their own way. I love letting students know that if they’re doing their best, that’s the best thing they can do.

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students. During my student teaching last year, in a general education 4th-grade classroom at Adams Elementary, the students created a whole booklet on what they enjoyed about my time being with them. One of the students wrote about how sad they were about me having to leave for the semester but how thankful they were on helping them not only with their work but how to manage their stress and anxiety.

What is a fun fact about you? One of my personal narrative papers from college is actually published in a book, “What Began As Potential: The Story of Success.”

Did you attend Lincoln Public Schools as a student? If so, which school(s)? I attended Brownell Elementary, Mickle Middle School, and Northeast High School.

Where did you attend college? UNL What is your favorite part of being an educator? My favorite part of being an educator is my ability to connect with students and help them grow.

What is a fun fact about you? I can say the alphabet backwards in less than three seconds.

Building/Department: Belmont Elementary School Teaching Assignment/Role: First grade Why did you want to become an educator? I became an educator because I love building relationships with not only the kids in my room but the families and the community around school buildings.

What has been your favorite part of working for Lincoln Public Schools? There is so much support around teachers and students. I never feel like I am alone.

Where did you attend college? Christopher Newport University, Newport News, Virginia What is your favorite part of being an educator? Making a difference in students’ lives and watching them have their light bulb moments.

Describe a time that you knew you made a difference for a student or group of students. All I want is for students to look back and think, “Man I loved when Mrs. Imoehl did ___ or showed me ____.”

I moved from Virginia (taught three years there) and I have students’ families messaging me and still using me as supports for their family. I love continuing to help the families and kids I once served!

Hartley celebrates 100 years Paul Blumer attended Hartley Elementary School from 1932 to 1938 and still vividly remembers his years at the school located at North 33rd and Vine streets.

"It's been a good experience to have been in Hartley," said the 94-yearold Blumer, who met his future wife while at Hartley. "A lot of good people. A lot of good teachers."

Blumer was among the many alumni, staff and current students who attended an event on Sept. 27 to celebrate the school’s 100th anniversary. There was a short ceremony on the school’s front yard, followed by tours and snacks inside.

“Obviously this school has meant a lot to people for them to come back 100 years after its formation and celebrate with us,” said Principal Rob Rickett. “We have the best students, the best families hands down that I have ever come across. I’m so blessed to work here each and every day.”

Superintendent Joel announces retirement plans During the Lincoln Board of Education Regular Meeting on Sept. 28, Lincoln Public Schools Superintendent Steve Joel announced his plans to retire at the end of the 2021-22 school year.

Joel said this is a decision he does not take lightly. “Being able to finish my 37-year career as a superintendent in Lincoln is a dream come true,” Joel said. “Not only is LPS nationally recognized for its work, but also offers a supportive school board and Lincoln community that have proven time and again they are willing to roll up their sleeves and support our staff, students and families.”

Joel went on to say that while the pandemic has created new challenges, he feels the school district continues to make great progress and announcing his plans now allows the school board time to open a national comprehensive search and recruit a quality candidate.

“LPS is widely respected and thought of in national administration circles and I have no doubt there will be quality candidates showing interest in the position.”

Blog: There’s still work to do I have so appreciated the incredible opportunity to be a part of Lincoln Public Schools these last 11 years. For someone to begin as a teacher and coach in Wilber, Nebraska and end up as superintendent of arguably one of the top large districts in the country is something I never expected. My educational journey has been filled with incredible opportunities to assist young people achieving their dreams and improving their lives. I recognize it takes an entire village to be successful, and LPS is blessed with the finest staff and most supportive community in all of America.

There is still much work to be completed this year. The Board has recently initiated the process to select a firm to assist in a national search for the next leader. Look for more information on how the community can be engaged in the process and a timeline once the firm is identified by the Board. As I consider this to be the best leadership position in the country, I anticipate there will be significant interest.

We will continue to work through the pandemic. While everyone is tired of face coverings, we know that they have played a significant part in driving and keeping our numbers low so that more of our students and staff are able to be in school. We continue to be

appreciative of the leadership of the health department and their guidance.

We had a nice enrollment surprise at the beginning of October. The increase of more than 200 students is greater than what we had projected this summer. The return of a number of home school students is taken as a vote of confidence in our ability to keep our children and staff safe.

With pandemic learning loss at the top of every school district’s “to do” list, we have worked hard to leverage federal ESSER funds to provide additional learning time and academic intervention for students who need assistance. We are excited to roll out video lessons during the second quarter for students who have had to miss class due to being isolated or in quarantine after a COVID-19 exposure.

Many thanks go to the teachers across the district who have volunteered to provide this for our students.

As always, thank you for your tremendous support of our work during these difficult times. We are looking forward to better days ahead.

2020-21 MOSAIC Display Lincoln Public Schools Library Services

T

he MOSAIC Committee selects, reviews, and promotes books that authentically and realistically portray the diversity of all students, from both historical and contemporary perspectives.

MOSAIC began as an initiative by the Lincoln Public Schools Library Services Department to meet the Nebraska Department of Education Rule 16 (later rolled into Rule 10) requiring libraries to provide current and unbiased multicultural resources.

In 1991, the first multicultural committee formed to review books for the first MOSAIC exhibit displayed at the district office. The MOSAIC has grown from a small in-house display to a regional exhibit visited by administrators, school staff and students, professors, college students, parents, grandparents and community members from around the southeast Nebraska area. For years, many LPS librarians hosted the display in their school libraries for a few weeks offering students and teachers the opportunity to review and read the books.

The MOSAIC has continued to evolve to meet the needs of our changing and digital society. In 2016, the display was reformatted to be more interactive for students and staff.

Books were paired with QR codes leading students to further their learning through videos, audio clips, and book trailers.

The display included interactive experiences such as access to popular music from around the world and virtual reality technology which allowed students to experience historical sites and major world cities.

In 2018, the committee created a digital MOSAIC display.

Students and teachers now access book reviews, eBooks, audiobooks, and extension videos from this online display.

The digital display also includes three promotional videos for teachers and librarians to show to students to encourage them to read a variety of books that reflect all kinds of lives. The physical display continues to be on display every fall at the LPS district office, and the books and materials are available to borrow from LPS Library Services.

MOSAIC Book Selection Each year, the LPS Library Services MOSAIC Committee comprised of literature-savvy teachers and librarians scour educational journals and review sources to select newly published multicultural materials to review for the MOSAIC. Resources are purchased from both major publishing houses and small independent publishers. Every resource is reviewed by committee members for accuracy, authenticity, content and perspective, characterization, setting, and literary quality. Only the "best of the best" resources are included in the MOSAIC display. The committee members' reviews are added to the LPS online catalog and included in the digital display. Our committee members also select high-quality extension resources to include in the digital display.

Charming as a Verb

By Ben Philippe Henri “Halti” Haltiwanger is a high school senior who is one charming, hustling, hardworking 18 year old in New York City. He has created a webpage for a fictitious dog-walking company to help him look legitimate while earning money to help his parents, Haitian immigrants, make ends meet. He attends an elite college-prep high school, and Halti’s father’s dream for him is to attend Columbia University. Halti is blackmailed by a socially awkward fellow student into elevating her social status, and true to high schoolers’ nature, he falls for her.

Corinne Troy is so opposite of Henri that it’s hard for even him to believe. Corinne opens his mind to new possibilities outside of his father’s plan for him. Then Henri, like many goal driven, overly ambitious kids, makes a huge mistake, putting his family’s respect, his girlfriend and his future in jeopardy. The book’s witty tone, believable situations and well-drawn, diverse cast of characters make this book a recommended one for grades 9-12.

Students, staff practice reunification process Lincoln Public Schools on Oct. 15 held its third training exercise in the last four years of what’s called a reunification process, another step that LPS takes to ensure the safety of students and staff in case of an emergency. Reunification would occur after students and staff evacuate their building, walk to their school’s designated relocation site, but are unable to return to school because of continued safety concerns - for example, a gas leak or a fire. At that point, they would be bussed to another safe, alternative site, where parents could pick up their children.

The weighty issue of kids’ health trends and COVID

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT LPS Wellness Facilitator The Centers for Disease Control and research have found a significant spike in weight struggles for kids. From March to November of 2020, it was found that across the board, kids ages 2-19 years gained weight, but especially kids who were already fighting weight.

Gains were around 7.3 pounds for our most at-risk kids, gaining between 1-1.2 pounds per month. Those who tend toward a healthier weight range gained on average 2.7 pounds over that time. (If you want to read more, search CDC, kids, weight and COVID to find the research.)

Naturally, kids gain some weight as they grow, but historically about two pounds per inch of growth to maintain their weight for height growth curve. That amount of added weight gain on the small frames of kids is much different than it is for our adult bodies and brings with it some real potential for other serious health issues. Youth blood pressure and early onset diabetes are possible, but so are issues of social-emotional issues in our Instagram world.

We at LPS want families and kids not to become overly scale focused, and worse yet to start kids into the adult dieting cycle of shame and frustration.

Please don’t. It can cause irreparable harm to kids. Most kids who are still growing should not be encouraged to lose weight. Period.

Instead, kids can just hold at their current weight and grow into it. If you have questions about your child’s particular situation, please consult their health care provider. Just as it is for us as adults, our weight is an end result of many complex factors.

tling the scale during these stay-at-home times. Fewer steps, organized sports, outdoor play and gym time. More baking, comfort foods, stress, screens/gaming/movies/streaming and couch time have been the norm.

This is also true for our kids. Unfortunately for many, this has now become engrained as comfy habits.

Work toward finding a new happy medium for your kids. Start nudging them back outside. Consider building new family habits with more pet/ family walks now that the weather is milder, or work your way back into some of those most valued movement-based activities. Return to time limits/bedtimes for devices and screen time. This may be the hardest battle - as a mom of two guys, I get it. It only will get tougher as they get older if you don’t tackle it now.

Keep snacks to fruits and/or healthier, easy to grab options when possible.

Get back to using water between meals instead of sweetened beverages that provide extra calories (and cavities) but aren’t filling. Keep teaching kids healthy cooking skills, such as how to prep fruits and vegetables.

Most importantly, keep communicating with your kids. Talk about the stressors they are facing. Our kids of this generation are dealing with issues we never dreamt of and we as parents don’t always have the roadmap to easy answers.

Stay connected with your school’s counselors/social workers, who may have access to resources you don’t know are available. These weighty issues kids are dealing with go far beyond the classroom and stress plays a big part in all aspects of health.

We need to keep collaborating for kids, as we continue to learn what impacts the world are having on them. Together we can help them build a brighter future.

Back to the future

If you are a fan of the movie “Back to the Future” you have likely contemplated what it would have been like to live in the times of your parents.

I kind of look wistfully back to the days of Encyclopedia Britannica and being able to go off the grid. It’s best my parents didn’t know as much as I do today about where my kids are. I digress…

As much as things change, some stay the same. The one challenge that has changed little is getting out the door in the morning for school with a breakfast in the tummy. Every minute counts, right?

The drop-off process for those who can’t walk or bike to school can be a big stressor to kids and parents alike who worry about getting to work or school on time. Not to mention the mess left from breakfast or trying to get a lunch packed.

I present to you an option for a much easier and money-saving future.

Fast-pass by the drop-off worries by having your students take advantage of the free student breakfasts and lunches for all students this school year.

Students will get breakfast, you will get to work/back home earlier, you won’t have a mess to clean up or the costs of buying foods for breakfast, and your kids will skip the worries about being late/tardy to class. No more missing lunch bags. Mischief managed.

It also gives students the chance to visit with friends while they enjoy breakfast so that when class starts, they are ready to listen and learn.

Schools are seeing a serious uptick in kids eating breakfast and lunch at school, but we want to make sure all parents are aware of this amazing resource for families.

We might still be waiting for a future without wheels but for now, free breakfast and lunch might be the road to a much brighter future for your student today.

Northwest High School unveils mascot and colors Lincoln Northwest High School unveiled its mascot and colors Sept. 30 live on social media from Arnold Elementary School. Principal Cedric Cooper, with help from Arnold Elementary School and Schoo Middle School students, announced Northwest High School will be the Falcons with purple, white, and gray as the colors.

Northwest staff asked the students and families from Arnold and Roper elementary schools, along with Park and Schoo middle schools, to vote between Aviators, Jets and Falcons for the mascot. Early on it looked like Aviators was going to be the number one choice, but in the last 24 hours of the voting window, the Falcons edged ahead.

Students also had the choice between light blue and purple, or just light blue or just purple. In

the end, purple, white, and gray were chosen to be the official colors.

Cooper said student and family input was key to finding the mascot that represented their community.

“We held a lot of engagement opportunities at the schools, meeting with students and families to gather their input during the months of August and September,” Cooper said. “Nothing rallies a community like a school and we enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing their opinions.”

Once the mascot and colors were picked, the Northwest staff went to work with the Lincoln Public Schools Graphics team to develop

the look for the mascot, the fonts, the colors and the logos. While the falcon was the focus, Northwest staff also wanted to tie in the aviator connection for the Air Park community.

“That is where the aviator goggles on the Falcon comes into play,” Cooper said. “The Fighting Falcon aircraft is part of the U.S. Air Force, and Air Park was once an Air Force base. We feel this really represents our community in northwest Lincoln.”

Northwest High School, located at Northwest 48th and West Holdrege streets will open in the fall of 2022. It will also house a Medical Science Focus Program for juniors and seniors in partnership with Bryan College of Health Sciences.

Snapshot of enrollment shows return to modest growth Lincoln Public Schools released their enrollment as of Oct. 1 for the 2021–22 school year. Despite the ongoing pandemic, there was an increase of 204 students for a total of 41,766 students at Lincoln Public Schools.

“We are pleased to see the Oct. 1 snapshot represent a return to modest growth for LPS,” said Associate Superintendent for Instruction Matt Larson. “Last year’s decline in enrollment appears to be an anomaly because of the pandemic and not a trend.”

Prior to the pandemic, LPS added an average 250 students each year since 2017.

Please note: The Lincoln Public Schools official snapshot of student enrollment is recorded each year on or near Oct. 1.

Other numbers of note: • Belmont is the largest elementary school with 829 students, followed by Kooser with 821.

• Wysong Elementary School grew the most by 103 students, or approximately 18 percent over last year.

• Scott continues to be the largest middle school with 1,182.

• Lincoln High School is the largest high school with 2,310 students.

• There are currently four LPS high schools with enrollments over 2,000 students, and three have more than 2,200 students.

• The K-8 Remote Learning Program serves 203 elementary students and 143 middle school students for a total of 346.

• Kindergarten enrollment includes 3,008 students – an increase of 143 over last year.

• Home school enrollment is down 7.6% since the end of last school year, or 155 less students.

BANDS COMPETE AT 40TH ANNUAL LPS INVITATIONAL Music filled the air at Seacrest Field on Saturday, Oct. 16 when 23 bands competed in the 40th Annual Lincoln Public Schools Marching Band Invitational Contest.

The awards for Outstanding Color Guard and Outstanding Percussion both went to Lincoln Southeast High School.

Bands could earn a rating of I for Superior, II for Excellent or III for Good.
