LPS breaks ground on new high school Lincoln Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 11 at the site in the northwest corner of the city where its seventh high school will open in the fall of 2022. The high school at Northwest Holdredge and North 48th streets is one of the projects funded by the $290 million bond issue that Lincoln voters overwhelmingly approved in February. "We're here to celebrate something that is a community celebration,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel. “This is an opportunity for us to pause and say thank you to so many people who made this happen.” Lincoln Board of Education President Kathy Danek said the new high school is a way for LPS to give back to the community, particularly those who live in northwest Lincoln. "I am so thrilled today that we can put this high school in a neighborhood that has long served Lincoln Public Schools," she said. "It's time for us to serve you." Lena Cortez-Philpot is currently an eighth-grader at Schoo Middle School and will attend the new school when it opens. "This high school will give students a fresh start," she said.
