LPS breaks ground on new high school Lincoln Public Schools held a groundbreaking ceremony Oct. 11 at the site in the northwest corner of the city where its seventh high school will open in the fall of 2022.

The high school at Northwest Holdredge and North 48th streets is one of the projects funded by the $290 million bond issue that Lincoln voters overwhelmingly approved in February.

"We're here to celebrate something that is a community celebration,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel.

“This is an opportunity for us to pause and say thank you to so many people who made this happen.”

Lincoln Board of Education President Kathy Danek said the new high school is a way for LPS to give back to the community, particularly those who live in northwest Lincoln.

"I am so thrilled today that we can put this high school in a neighborhood that has long served Lincoln Public Schools," she said. "It's time for us to serve you."

Lena Cortez-Philpot is currently an eighth-grader at Schoo Middle School and will attend the new school when it opens.

"This high school will give students a fresh start," she said.

October TeamMates of the Month

Justin and Rusty: Listening and Understanding Rusty is a seventh grader who excels at drawing, enjoys playing video games and reads science fiction. Justin is a father of two, works in aviation sales, and loves sports. On paper, they don’t have a whole lot in common. But over the past three years, they have become the closest of friends through the TeamMates program.

“We’re both communicators and we both like to talk,” explains Justin. “We can both talk non-stop when we get going.”

Typically, TeamMates are paired together based upon shared interests. For some, personality is the primary commonality. Justin believes the school facilitator who matched them saw an opportunity to bring together two talkers. “That’s why we hit it off,” Justin confirms. “Our interests are completely opposite and I think that’s what makes us a good crew, believe it or not, because I enjoy learning about what Rusty brings to the table.”

Rusty admits that although they can chat about anything now, he didn’t always know what to talk about with his new mentor. “I was kind of nervous about ‘What do I say? What do I do?’ so I just got a pencil and paper and started drawing,” he explains.

Rusty’s drawings are impressive, says Justin. “They went on my fridge for a lot of years alongside my son’s stuff.” Together, Rusty and Justin have made use of Schoo’s 3D printer. “The stuff he would design was pretty incredible,” Justin shares.

Although they currently meet via Zoom, favorite activities also include Stratego and Uno. “Whenever me and my friends are playing a game, we usually just talk about the video games we play, but when I play games with Justin it’s just this bond between me and him.” It’s a bond he finds difficult to describe, affirming Justin is simply his best friend.

Although Justin is the mentor, Rusty is a friend and a teacher to him as well. “I learn a lot from him by listening and understanding what kids are going through, their daily battles and their interests,” explains Justin. “He’s a teacher to me in a lot of ways, of understanding other ways of going through life,” he continues.

“But 100 percent a friendship.”

Lincoln High alum wins Nobel Prize in economics A 1955 graduate of Lincoln High School has won the Nobel Prize in economics.

Robert Wilson, a semi-retired Stanford University professor, shares the award with one of his former students, Paul Milgrom. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences made the announcement Oct. 5. They won the award, which brings with it a $1 million prize, for “improvements to auction theory and inventions of new auction formats.”

The Nobel committee said their work showed “why rational bidders tend to place bids below their own best estimate of the common value.”

This can translate into an item selling for less than its worth or perhaps not to the bidder who wants it most - neither of which should happen if an auction is working as it should.

Wilson called the work that he and Milgrom did together “very exciting.” “I’m very happy to share this acknowledgment with him,” he said.

Wilson was born in Geneva, Neb., and spent most of his childhood in York before moving to Lincoln for his junior year of high school.

He earned a scholarship to Harvard University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, a Master of Business Administration degree and a Doctor of Business Administration. He joined the Stanford Graduate School of Business faculty in 1964 and was inducted into the National Academy of Sciences in 1994.

Elliott staff surprise longtime custodian Dan Davis has a laugh that fills the hallways of Elliott Elementary School. As a custodian, one thing he does not find very funny is glitter, which is notorious for being hard to clean up.

But on Sept. 25 even he had to laugh. The entire staff surprised him after school and honored him for his 20th anniversary at Elliott. Everyone presented him with cards that featured pictures of his favorite musical performer, Janet

“It’s been a fun 20 years,” he said, clearly smiling behind his face covering.

They also used a lot of glitter, but he didn’t mind.

“Thanks for all the love.”

Elliott Principal Kathleen Dering said Davis is the kind of person who can bring a smile to anyone’s face.

“He will go out of his way to help a staff member when they have a need,” she said.

“Dan’s positivity and love for what he does is a bright spot in our Elliott community and we are very thankful for him.”

Youth Mental Wellness

Our youth are our future’s greatest asset. Schools, parents, caregivers and communities all play a role in providing supportive pathways for our youth as they navigate childhood and adolescence.

SCIP (School Community Intervention and Prevention) is partnering with Lincoln Public Schools, Bryan Independence Center and the Lancaster Prevention Coalition to put on a series of valuable presentations about how to support the health and well-being of our community’s youth. These events are open to parents, students, school professionals and community members.

The mission of QPR is to save lives and reduce suicidal behaviors by providing innovative, practical and proven suicide prevention training. QPR will train people to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade and refer someone to help. This training is presented by Abbe Edgecombe with School Community Intervention & Prevention (SCIP) in partnership with Region V Systems. Lincoln Recycles Week November 15th is America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful initiative that is a nationally recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States. The City of Lincoln has organized a week of activities to celebrate and support recycling opportunities in our community, starting with the LPS Scrap Metal Drive.

LPS Scrap Metal Drive

Tuesday, November 10 The scrap metal drive, which raises funds for the Lincoln Public Schools (LPS) Recycling Program, kicks off on November 10th and runs through Earth Day, April 22nd, 2020. The partners are Sadoff Iron and Metal Company and Alter Metal Recycling, and all types of scrap metal will be accepted, including aluminum and tin cans, pots and pans, appliances, wiring, sinks, bathtubs and electric motors. Residents who want their recycling revenue to go to LPS should notify Sadoff or Alter when dropping off items. The donations will help LPS replace worn out steel recycling containers. The old containers will be recycled and replaced with containers manufactured from recycled steel, closing the recycling loop.

HAZTOGO

Wednesday, November 18 HAZTOGO, Lincoln’s Hazardous Waste Center at 5101 North 48th St., offers free household hazardous waste drop-off services on Wednesdays from 9 am - 1 pm. This program of the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) also accepts household hazardous waste on the third Saturday of the month with an appointment. Accepted items include pesticides, old gasoline, cleaning products, aerosol containers and items containing mercury. For a checklist of what to bring, visit haztogo.com.

Recycling Collection & Bin Buddies

Friday, November 13, 4 pm to 6 pm Volunteers with the Bin Buddies Recycling Assistance Team will be at the Seacrest Field parking lot (70th and A. Street) to help answer recycling questions about the City Consumer Recyclables Collection Sites. Are food purchasing trends reflected on your table?

By Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS Wellness How much has your family’s eating changed over these past few months?

Are you doing more food prep at home? Eating more take out? Is your sourdough starter still running? You might want to catch it! (Sorry, couldn’t resist—insert groan here) As a registered dietitian, food trending is especially fascinating to me.

What we have learned is that when the world went on pause and people were at home, their choice of foods really changed. Food choices were also impacted by not going out to buy groceries nearly as often, or choosing differently due to using grocery pick up or delivery services.

One example of this is how dairy purchases changed. Purchases in the dairy industry went up approximately 17%, but it was more about growth in use of sour cream, cheese, yogurt and butter, along with the standard glass of milk. Families were buying more items that had longer shelf life and were cooking so much more at home. That’s happy news for our neighborhood cows, as most fluid dairy we consume comes from less than 30 miles away—the definition of local.

At the same time, intake of fresh fruits and vegetables may have shifted more toward the hearty baby carrot, frozen and canned items, since it’s hard to not create fuzzy fruits and vegetables in the “Crispers of Doom” if you are trying to buy one or two weeks of fresh items at a time. Fortunately, we can now get out a bit more, though there’s no shame in the frozen fruit and vegetable game. In fact, depending on the fruit or vegetable, there can be more nutrients present in frozen versions, since they are processed at their peak, often within hours of harvest.

How have your protein sources changed? Are your kids old enough that you taught them how to make eggs? Eggs are always one of our most economical protein sources. If dollars are running tighter than usual, a breakfast supper or nice slow cooker soup can really stretch the dollar (and use up some of those odd and ends).

Finally, I’m really glad to see that when the going got tough, the carbs were back in favor once again. Our bodies are meant to be nourished by all foods, just in a reasonable balance. Breads and particularly whole grains have great value to our health.

Most of all, I’m hopeful that as our world creeps back toward activities and events, that families find a way to stick with a family meal or snack time more often. One of my biggest joys was having my college kid and high school senior back around the table with us for meals - it was a true silver lining of this pause.

Where I’m From C AV E T T E L E M E N TA R Y

This is part of a series of stories, “Where I’m From,” about LPS elementary school teachers who returned to teach at their old schools.

Aug. 14, 2017, the first day of school and the first day of teaching fifth grade at Cavett Elementary School for Kelsey Halverson. She returned to the school she attended, the school she held close to her heart. The memories came flooding back during the all-school assembly to kick off the year.

As everyone started to sing the school song, Halverson realized she still knew every word.

“It felt pretty surreal to be back,” she recalls.

She was a second grader at Cavett when it opened in 1995. She remembers touring the school that summer and how excited she was to be part of something new. She spent the next five years making memories that will last a lifetime: voting for the school mascot and colors; watching the principal at the time, Barb Jacobson, do cartwheels; posing for an all-school aerial photo on the basketball court; participating in student council, chorus, band and after-school clubs.

“I just remember how much fun I had at school as a child so I try to replicate that with my own students now,” Halverson said. “I believe school should be memorable and fun because that is exactly what I experienced.”

Shout it, shout it, shout it, shout it Shout it 'til you fly!

Through the years, the best will always be! Hey! She loves sharing memories with students. She tells them how it used to be fields of sunflowers to the west of the school. She and her friends would sneak in caterpillars after recess and try to hide them in their pencil boxes. The fields are long gone but the trees she and her classmates helped plant are still there.

There are multiple teachers still at Cavett from when she was a student, including one of her fellow fifth-grade teachers. Every year she has students guess which fifth-grade teacher’s name was included on her fifthgrade report cards.

“Every year I tell the students that fun fact but I never tell them who,” she said. “It’s really fun to watch them guess.” (Stephany Madsen Martinez shhhh.)

“I felt that love as a student from so many of my teachers and I hope students today feel that same love here at Cavett.”

Halverson is now raising another Cavett Cardinal. Her daughter started preschool this year. Add all this up - the past and the present - and it equals a teacher who couldn’t imagine being anywhere else.

“The teachers, staff members, families and surrounding businesses are so supportive. The school is full of really dedicated teachers that go above and beyond to love their students and support them as they learn and grow,” she said. “I felt that love as a student from so many of my teachers and I hope students today feel that same love here at Cavett.”

Physical education brings yard games, lifetime sports to life

By Michelle Welch RD, LMNT, LPS Wellness With our better late than never Husker season upon us, you might notice that your kids have stepped up their skills in outdoor games. This is thanks in part to creative minds working to take skills learning outdoor for physical education. The results might lead to some heated matches of corn hole at a family tailgate between you and your students.

With all the unique challenges of this school year, our physical education teachers collaborated to look at physical skills students are focused on learning but presenting them in a way that works outdoors with more physical distance.

Games such as bean bag toss (corn hole), ladder toss, giant cup stacking and more have woven their way into some fun fitness learning.

Though students have taken amazingly well to wearing face coverings, being able to give them a chance to spread out, take a mask break and have some physical learning has gone especially well, thanks to lots of planning, efforts and communication between our physical education experts and our district P.E. curriculum leader, Matt Avey.

“We’ve always worked to get students outside for physical activity, but this year has issued so many new opportunities to think differently,” Avey said. “We continue to keep evaluating what works and it will be great to see what innovative approaches stick with us once world circumstances change.”

We hope that students newly learned physical skills provide them with great lifetime sports enthusiasm and gives you a fantastic excuse to get out in the yard and play. That said, get ready for some serious banter from your kiddos about tailgating game skills. You might want to brush up yourself. Have a great time being active with the family.

LPS, UNL launch joint program at Northeast Lincoln Public Schools and the College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are joining together to launch the LPSUNL Early College and Career STEM Program at Northeast High School. LPS and UNL celebrated the launch of the program during an event at Lincoln Northeast High School on Sept. 21.

Through hands-on, immersive experiences and early college pathways, the program will prepare Northeast students in the areas of food, energy, water and societal systems, which are collectively known as FEWS2. Pathways are designed for students who wish to pursue a two- or four-year college degree, as well as for students who plan to enter the workforce after graduating from high school.

“This is an exciting new opportunity for our students and aligns our goals of empowering our students to find academic success through authentic learning opportunities, rigorous standards and individualized learning,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel. “We have had many successfull partnerships with UNL, and this is just another example of the great collaboration between our two institutions that will benefit our students and community.”

The program is designed to provide pathways for learners at Northeast who are interested in FEWS2. Examples of these pathways include: • Students who plan to enter the workforce after high school graduation can earn non-credit competencies in certain areas that will give them an edge as they look for employment.

• Students will be able to earn college credit for classes that will transfer to UNL and other post-secondary institutions.

• Students who earn a certain number of credits can earn a certificate of college credit, which they can use to seek work after high school or can put toward a four-year degree.

• Most importantly, students will be able to explore careers in agriculture and natural resources.

• A summer enrichment program built around FEWS2 concepts will take place in the summer of 2021.

Beginning in the fall of 2021, FEWS2 concepts will be integrated into Northeast’s 9th and 10th grade math and science curriculums. In the fall of 2022, 11th and 12th graders will begin to enroll in early college credit classes and explore non-credit pathways, too. On- and off-ramps are built into the program for students who decide it’s not for them, decide to enroll later in their high school career or who drop out of the program and then decide to rejoin.

“As a first-generation college student who pursued an education and career in agriculture and life science, I know I would have benefited greatly from a program like this,” said UNL Chancellor Ronnie Green. “I am personally so excited for the Lincoln Northeast students whose career options are going to expand because of this partnership between UNL and LPS.”

“We built this program to meet students where they are at and help prepare them for future careers in the growing areas of food, energy, water and societal system.”

The program is designed to be affordable and accessible to students and their families.

Non-credit experiences will be available to students free-of-charge. Student who opt to take classes for college credit will receive reduced tuition.

LPS and CASNR have a long history of collaborating to create enriching, hands-on programming related to agriculture, life sciences and natural resources.

Nearly 20 years ago, LPS, CASNR and the Lincoln Children’s Zoo joined together to launch the Our Zoo to You program, in which animals from the Lincoln Children’s Zoo lived in LPS elementary classrooms for six weeks and were incorporated into reading, writing, science and math curriculum. Other successful programs, including Bug Bash and the Summer Soybean Institute, followed.

Tiffany Heng-Moss, dean of UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, says all of these programs challenged LPS students to use design thinking and scientific inquiry and have prepared them to meet the challenges of a changing world.

The Early STEM program is no different.

“We built this program to meet students where they are at and help prepare them for future careers in the growing areas of food, energy, water and societal systems,” said HengMoss. “In Nebraska, one in four jobs is related to agriculture and natural resources, and a prepared workforce with highly developed problem-solving and critical-thinking skills will be essential to Nebraska’s future success. I am so proud of this partnership and the opportunities it will bring for students and for Nebraska.”

Pyrtle celebrates National Blue Ribbon School honor Pyrtle Elementary School on Oct. 14 celebrated its recent honor of being named a National Blue Ribbon School with an assembly attended by its fifth graders and leaders from Lincoln Public Schools.

Principal Kristen Finley said the journey that led to this honor began two years ago, when teachers and staff began collaborating and developing data-driven strategies to improve their students’ academic success.

They focused on learning targets, opportunities to respond, cooperative learning and feedback. They also never lost sight of the vital role that social-emotional development plays in a student’s academic journey.

“The teachers at Pyrtle never give up. They take on challenges and problem-solve anything that is sent our way,” said Finley, who went on to thank the school’s students for their hard work, as well as their families for their unwavering support and partnership.

Pyrtle joins 367 other K-12 schools in the country honored by the U.S. Department of Education. It’s one of only six schools in Nebraska honored this year and only the seventh LPS school honored since the award’s inception in 1982.

“Years from now,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel, “if you want to win an argument when people try to tell you they went to a better school than you, you can say, ‘But I bet you never attended a National Blue Ribbon School.’”

Joel was joined on Wednesday by Lincoln Board of Education President Kathy Danek, board member Connie Duncan and LPS Associate Superintendent for Instruction Matt Larson.

The school’s colors are blue and yellow and most of the students, teachers and staff wore blue clothing on Wednesday.

“You’re wearing blue because you are one of the few,” Danek said.

The event also featured two student speakers, fifth-graders Vasya Mironov and Bryar Ashby.

“Pyrtle is the best school because Pytrle has very good friendships, awesome teachers, and a great, honest principal,” Mironov said.

Bryer began her remarks by thanking the teachers but said they’re not the only ones worthy of praise.

“They are not the only heroes in our school,” she said. “Our staff gives us a great environment to learn.”

The U.S. Department of Education recognizes schools in one of two performance categories, based on all student scores, student subgroup scores and graduation rates. Pyrtle received the Exemplary High Performing School award. Schools in this category are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.
