“While it will eventually be a larger school with maybe 500 or 600 students in it, the student experience won’t feel as though they’re in that larger building. It will feel as if they’re in a much smaller setting, which we know is better for education,” Gausman commented.

“The teams we have assembled are first and foremost ready to do what’s best for the interest of students and are eager and excited to implement high-quality instruc tion in all our learning environments,” Vercellino said.

Ada Robinson Elementary School staff were able to walk through their new building on Aug. 5 and see year. Lincoln Public Schools announced after the tour on Friday that the opening of the school will be delayed two weeks while crews finish key elements in the building.

“It’s so beautiful. I’m so excited. It’s gorgeous,” said Ali Waite, teacher.

“There was an awful lot of elation from our staff. It was like the very first day of school for them,” added Jeff Vercellino, principal.

Named after a longtime Clinton Elementary School teacher, Robinson Elementary School is located in the Waterford Estates near 102nd and Holdrege streets. This year’s school motto, "Rooted in Relationships," reflects Robinson’s approach to education.

During the tour, staff had the opportunity to see some of the new classrooms, the library and various common spaces. LPS broke ground on the project in May 2021. The school is one of three new schools opening after the com munity voted to approve a bond referendum in 2020.

“I’m so happy we are here. We are finally here,” Waite LPSsaid.serves approximately 41,000 students, and elemen tary students accounted for nearly half of the school district’s population. LPS Superintendent Paul Gaus man said leaders carefully designed the school to best support growth, learning and belonging.

Robinson Elementary and Lincoln Northwest High School opened their doors this fall. Standing Bear High School is scheduled to open its doors in fall 2023.

“We’re both from pretty big families so we can commiserate in how you can get kind of lost in that sometimes,” Anne said.

Through TCA Shay can determine if she wants to follow through with her dream of becoming a veterinarian. The agriculture and bioscience pathway will give her a jumpstart on the journey and prepare for vet erinary school if she chooses.

“Right when I saw her I felt like I already had this connection, like ‘I feel like this is going to be a good TeamMate,’” Shaye added. “She looked like a bright, energetic person and that’s how I am.” Shaye had been paired previously with a TeamMate who had to move.

“Over the years, Anne has really brought out my creativity,” Shaye said. “ I enjoy helping her bring out her creativity as well. I’ve always loved doing little projects and having Anne be able to provide that for me and help me with it, it’s just a really good experience.”

“Shaye is very crafty. I am not,” Anne said while laughing. “She has taught me a lot. One of the best things about Shaye is that she’s not afraid to experiment.”

TeamMates connected Shaye to Anne, which not only developed her strengths but gave her a lifelong friend.

“I remember Ms. Yost at Dawes telling me Shaye’s former TeamMate just kinda left,” Anne said. “I wanted to make sure right away she knew that I wasn’t going anywhere and that I was in it for the long haul.”

High school junior Shaye will start The Career Academy this fall.

“I’d say we’re probably 85 percent fun talk and 15 percent serious talk. I think we both know that we can talk seriously any time we want though,” Anne said.

Shaye said talking with Anne has definitely helped her realize her personal strengths and appreciates the opportunity to have a creative outlet, especially during semesters where she does not have an art class.

“TeamMates is an amazing program. It brings out the best in people. Some peo ple don’t connect with their mentees or mentors, but you just have to find the right person. I feel like you’ll know when you find the right person, like I did with Anne,” Shaye said. “I know she’s going to be the one to stick with me to the end.”

“I love being around animals,” Shaye said. “I just feel like I have this connection with them.” Animals aren’t the only connection Shaye has discovered throughout her academic career. Nearly four years ago, she was introduced to her TeamMates mentor Anne.

Shaye & Anne: In it for the long haul

Anne and Shaye have various shared interests. For example, they both love animals. Shaye loves hearing updates on Anne’s two rescued Yorkie mixes. I love being around animals,” Shaye said. “I just feel like I have this connection with them.”

TEAMMATES OF THE MONTH

The mentoring pair also both come from families with four siblings.

Both agree they spend the majority of their time just having fun, talking about life updates and doing arts and crafts.

Sustainability Sustainability

September 2022 | Community News | Section A A7

The LPS Sustainability Team routinely visits construction sites to monitor the sort ing process and provide support and resources when needed, but this is really a team effort. The project contractor can have dozens of subcontractors on a school construc tion site. They are all included in a part of this goal to sort materials and keep them out of the landfill when possible.

at Lincoln Public Schools

When it came time to pass the 2020 bond issue, LPS was ready to further those efforts and increase the waste diversion goal to 80 percent. We recycle construction materials including wood, metal, concrete, brick, cardboard, pallets, ceiling tiles, light bulbs and ballasts, bottles, cans, paper and PVC pipe. We also salvage some items for reuse, such as wood cabinets and bookshelves, within the school district or community auction.

Due to continued efforts and communication on site, many projects have exceeded the high diversion rate goal. For example, Robinson Elementary School is one of the buildings going above and beyond with waste efforts. The school currently has an 82 percent diversion rate. This team effort at all LPS construction projects has led to more than 10 million pounds of construction waste being diverted from the landfill since construction began. While some of the 2020 bond projects have wrapped up, there are still plenty more in progress or starting soon. LPS will continue working together with the many contractors, subcontractors and local recyclers that make it possible to reach our waste diversion goals.

provision also created a new habit for contractors. They started providing monthly reports of the materials recycled from LPS construction and renovation sites.

Lincoln Public Schools students and staff have a long history of participating in a robust waste management system that includes recycling, composting and reusing materials when possible. Our school district extends those efforts to divert waste from the landfill with our construction projects as well.

LPS updated its design guidelines for all construction and renovation projects to in clude a waste diversion goal of 75 percent after the 2014 bond issue passed. This update means 75 percent or more of the waste produced on a site would be reused, salvaged or Thisrecycled.new

Getting There is Half the Fun! Find Active Ways to Everyday Places.

Here are seven tips to boost your school year's hap piness once the back-to-school excitement starts to fade. Build in the easy button. Find a “home” for ev eryday school supplies such as backpacks, Chrome book chargers and instruments. Establishing this habit will quicken the process of getting out the door with less stress. Have your kids work with you in set ting these spots and reinforce this habit often. Labels on hooks help as a reminder. Make breakfast a priority. Ignite your student’s brain with breakfast. Learning and focus require fuel in their bellies. We encourage families to consider utilizing school breakfast when possible. This allows kids to eat just a bit later while they are more awake. It’s also an excellent chance for them to connect with friends while eating. Skip the morning mess at home and the drop-off traffic hassles with school breakfast. Check your school website for exact meal times. Open your ears when picking up kids from school. Car time is magic with school-aged kids. Notice how much they will tell you in the car compared to when they are distracted by other activities at home. Try using open-ended prompts to spark conversations like “Tell me about your day” instead of “How was school?” This will encourage a greater response than a one-word answer. Also, try to keep car time device-free to help boost conversation. If picking up from school isn’t an opportunity, try setting a 20-minute time aside for distraction-free chats each night.

Be slow with the yes to build success. As attrac tive as being involved is, kids also need downtime and sleep. Before you say “yes” to an opportunity, ask questions about the level of commitment required for participation. Ask about things like practice times and the number of events with required attendance. Work with your kids to strike the right balance.

Discover an amazing resource hub. Lincoln is fortunate to have a one-stop shop to find resources. If you need help with mental or physical health, or nutrition, they are all in one easy-to-utilize app you can find on the web. Go to www.mylnk.app/home to check it out! This resource is partnered with My LNK in creating a local directory for all Lincoln resources. Keep celebrating the joy of your kids. Nothing beats seeing your child grow and accomplish tasks you couldn’t have dreamed of a year or two ago. They are a wonder, from reading their first chapter book to playing an instrument. Is it easy? No way. Growing up and caring for our children are our most demanding jobs. Pat yourself on the back! Make an effort to take a pause and celebrate these milestones. These years do truly go by in a flash. Happy school year!
