Next-level physical education at Randolph

Randolph Elementary students took physical education to new heights last month.

The students participated in the global “Stack Up” cup stacking challenge in their PE classes over a three-day span. They joined more than 650,000 cup stackers worldwide to set a new world record.

“This is a great way to engage both sides of the brain,” Randolph PE teacher Mallory Nutt said. “We're using both our right hand and left hands. It’s a great way to emphasize movement.”

Students worked on hand and eye coordination by learning various cup stacking sequences. They tested their new skills by competing against their classmates in a tournament. The races also taught another crucial lesson – sportsmanship.

“I liked this lesson because I got to cheer on my teammates and have fun,” Randolph Fourth Grade Student Oakley said.

“I felt like they wanted me to win really bad, and they were cheering so I could win and that made me confident,” classmate Sami added.

The “Stack Up” challenge has quickly become a tradition at Randolph. This is the sixth year Randolph has joined. Nutt said this is one of her favorite lessons to teach her students. She hopes her classes learn the importance of lifelong fitness while learning a new way to move.

“They’re going to need to be active for the rest of their lives to stay healthy. We talk about their heart health. This is just a different way to catch some lifelong movers,” Nutt said.

According to the World Sport Stacking Association (WSSA), nearly 740,000 stackers and more than 2,300 schools and organizations participated this year. Participants did help set a new record – breaking the previous one by almost 100,000 more stackers.

TEAMMATES OF THE MONTH

Natalie and Cara: Staying interconnected

November 2019 marked the end of elementary school for Natalie, but the start of her mentoring relationship with Cara.

“I remember playing a lot of games,” Natalie said. “Didn’t we play Connect 4 and UNO? We were just getting to know each other.”

“We just talked about this the other day, how we used to play games and we haven’t played games in a long time. We just talk,” Cara answered.

After a few months, the dynamic of the pair’s relationship shifted. The COVID-19 pandemic reached Lincoln and schools closed. Natalie and Cara got creative to keep their bond going. They were one of more than 500 TeamMates that utilized Zoom mentoring.

“I feel like trust built for us during the pandemic,” Cara said. “I remember when your cat would jump up on your desk, or we’d take turns talking about things in our home like you would show on your Chromebook, ‘I just moved my room around.’”

The Zoom meetings allowed the two to connect on a deeper level by showing aspects of their personal lives. Natalie and Cara have dogs at home, which created several laughs for the pair.

“Like when her puppy is tired, he comes to her door and cries like a little toddler,” Natalie said, “So she lets the dog in, but then he doesn’t want to go to bed.”

Storytelling is central for them. In fact, Cara included “funny” and “family” on her list of top three ways to describe Natalie who loves to tell stories about members of her large family. Her delivery is what makes Cara laugh.

“If I’m having a bad morning, I have someone to talk to about it and going into the rest of my day…it’s better,” Natalie said.

“I feel you often remind me that even when things are hard and stressful that things are going to be okay. It’s kind of your approach. I think adults think it is a way to give back, but it’s really a two-way thing,” Cara said.

The Magical Reality of Nadia

Fast-paced, funny, and full of cultural details, this book is as educational as it is exciting! Readers will love the graphic novel format that is woven into the story. The larger than life characters not only walk readers through Egyptian culture, but also through real-life friendship scenarios that any reader can relate to. With many opportunities to solve problems, connect to the plot and think deeper about a new culture, readers will be disappointed when this adventure is over!

CeCe Rios and the Desert of Souls by Kaela Rivers

Author Kaela Rivera draws you into the action right off the bat as 12-year old (almost 13 she is quick to point out) Cece Rios finds herself in a dangerous situation. She is lost in the hills of the desert outside of her town and comes face to face with a criatura that has escaped Devil’s Alley. Cece saves the creature and this sets her on a whirlwind adventure that involves creatures, captured souls, true friendship, and self discovery. Cece Rios shows us that it is possible to be brave and kind and that one must love who they are as we all bring our own unique gifts to the world. The book is filled with fantastic creatures as Rivera pulls from the folktales of her Mexican heritage and weaves them into an action packed battle between good and evil that is fueled by an intense love of family. A glossary to define terms that may be unfamiliar to the reader is included at the back of the book. You will be rooting for Cece all the way through!

The Words in My Hands by Asphyxia

The author is a deaf person who, like Piper, the main character in the book, was raised as an oral deaf child who learns Auslan (Australian Sign Language) later in life. Readers will gain insight into what it can be like to be deaf and how non-deaf person’s behavior with them makes an impact. Another character, Marley, is a CODA (Child of Deaf Adults) so the reader sees what his life experiences have been. The thoughts, emotions and experiences of the characters are well developed and draw the reader into their world. As Piper struggles to find her place in life, she meets Marley who introduces her to a Deaf community and a network of civilians who are determined to help end the food shortage by gardening and eating what the government labels “wild food”. Piper is also a talented artist and her journal is her coping mechanism. The pages of the book are filled with her drawings and colorful detailing on the edges.

Harvesting Connections: School Gardens Gathering

The Lincoln Public Schools Sustainability team harvested some new connections with its second quarter school gardens gathering. The team brought together parents, volunteers, staff and community partners who are passionate about supporting gardens and outdoor learning.

Prior to the event, students led a tour of the greenhouse at The Career Academy. Attendees could view student projects, tower gardens and various plants.

During the gathering, Lincoln Board of Education member Lanny Boswell and Dawes Middle School Garden Club Coordinator Lora Carpenter-Janike along with others shared the impact of gardens. Student leaders also shared their projects regarding pollinators.

“I truly believe it was one of the most rewarding and beneficial seminars I have been to for LPS,” Kasey Dils said. Dils is a Pershing Elementary School teacher and Perennials Club leader.

Several community partners also highlighted the resources and programs they have available to aid school garden success.

No garden event would be complete without some fresh produce! Attendees were able to enjoy fresh local greens donated from the Beyond School Bells Freight Farm while listening to presentations.

In the United States, children start using social media around 11 years of age (American Academy of Pediatrics). Snapchat, TikTok and Instagram are among the most popular social media platforms used by youth. While there are positive aspects of social media, there are also potential risks. Join us for this important community presentation to learn how to help youth navigate the world of social media in a healthy way. Dr. Melissa Lafferty, Clinical Psychologist at Nebraska Mental Health Centers, will discuss the following:

• The positive and negative consequences of social media consumption;

• The “addiction” cycle of social media consumption;

• The consequences of that cycle on how others connect with each other

• Strategies for finding balance with social media consumption while still making meaningful connections off-line.

Tips for parenting tech-savvy kids in 2023

Parenting challenges exploded within the lifetimes of our kids. This is largely due to the lure of technology combined with the two-and-a-halfyear challenge of keeping kids home and healthy starting in 2020. Far more than usual, kids in the U.S. are experiencing unprecedented levels of depression, anxiety and social-emotional behavior struggles. Their gap in social skills is very noticeable in schools. The online world’s stimulation makes the real world’s pace and expectations seem unappealing. Finally, kids have a friend-to-friend tech support team that is fantastic at figuring out workarounds to any firewalls parents try to put in place. So, what can parents do? Here are some tips:

Utilize the New Year as a tool for a family restart. Work with the caregivers in your household to ensure buy-in and support so you aren’t taking this on solo. Put your tools in place first. Did you know you can create settings to toggle on WIFI or quickly change passwords if needed with many providers? Then provide some warning for your family and set expectations such as the start date of the restart.

Set firm rules for parent access to devices and tracking capabilities. It is critical that parents have passwords and access to any apps and devices. Parents need to ensure that kids maintain the “find my location” functions on devices that are open to parents but closed to others. Apps such as Snapchat have maps that show users’ exact locations to their friends. If kids know the expectation of devices being accessed by parents at any time, they may reconsider problematic content.

Recognize sneaky ways people can get into your kids’ ears. Back in the day, checking texts was an easy way to know what kids were doing. Now savvy kids are communicating in parent-untraceable methods. Snapchat is the most popular, but so are other apps like Twitch, Reddit and Twitter. Earbuds make hiding even easier.

Be aware of secret secondary accounts. Most kids have second and third secret Instagram accounts where they “Dear diary” any thought that comes to mind. If you wonder where all of the mean comments and battles are happening, there is your answer.

Set bedtimes for devices – have devices sleep and charge in parent spaces. The appeal of devices is strong. If devices are charging in public areas or bedrooms of kids, they will find their way back into late-night activities. Being firm in keeping to this one rule will make a major difference in your kids’ sleep and late-night safety.

Develop a secret parents network with other parents. Why did we behave as kids? Likely we knew other parents were teaming up with our parents in the “neighborhood watch.” As your kids are gaining friends, make connections with other caregivers. Exchange numbers, find each other on social media and plan to look out for each other’s kids. Adult-to-adult sharing is likely how you might help one another keep up with what apps are being used by kids in this ever-changing digital landscape. It’s a job none of us can do alone.

Keep kids busy offline. If kids are playing sports, performing music, participating in clubs or helping others, they naturally gain social skills. They’re spending face time with other people, making friends and spending less time on devices. It may take some heavier nudging than was needed in the past, but it’s nudging worth doing.

Devices aren’t all bad. They just require us to find the balance. Kids are highly unlikely to do this on their own and need protection. They need us to be the leaders in our families.

LPS has endless opportunities for kids to get involved and reconnect with the world, no device needed. Help your student plug into the real world again and build a brighter future.

ROPER STUDENTS

Each year, one Lincoln Public Schools elementary school is chosen to participate in Backstage at the Ballet, an educational outreach program through the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company. This year, the ballet company visited Roper Elementary School Dec. 6-8. Students rotated through three stations - choreography, makeup and costumingduring specials time. The event culminated in an abbreviated performance of the “Nutcracker Ballet” on Monday, Dec. 12 in the Roper gym. The performance included several Roper students, who performed part of a dance they learned during their choreography workshop.

“The kids have loved this week,” said Shari True, artistic director for the Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company. “We’ve had so much fun, especially in the choreography lessons. They’ve really gotten to try new skills that some of them didn’t even think they could do.”

“The choreography station is my favorite because I really like to dance,” said Estelle, Roper Elementary fifth grade student.

Classmate Judah chimed in, “My brother really enjoyed it yesterday and he made me do the whole entire dance for like an hour and a half last night.”

The Lincoln Midwest Ballet Company’s Backstage at the Ballet program has been inspiring elementary students in Lincoln for more than 33 years.

“I got to learn something new every single day of this week, and I’m just really lucky to have this opportunity at my school,” added Estelle.
