In the hallway outside the library at Hill, look up and you’ll see a square piece of clear plastic amidst the while ceiling tiles. Through the plastic you’ll see a dangling dirty work boot. It’s believed the boot was left there by a construction worker during a project in 1975. It was discovered seven years later.

Fifth-grade teacher Heidi McInerny was a sixth-grade student at Hill when the mysterious boot was discovered. The story still brings a smile to her face. “The teachers had a great time trying to creep us out,” McInerny recalls. “‘Who was in here? What were they doing?’ It was a lot of fun and when the building was remodeled they kept the boot. Pretty fun memory.” McInerny has plenty of fun memories of her time attending Hill and growing up in the neighborhood. She was a member of the school’s first kindergarten class in 1976. Hill is known for its artwork throughout the building and much of it was created when she was a student. She remembers the two-block walk to and from school every day. “I like having childhood memories so close,” said McInerny, now in her tenth year at Hill. “I also like being able to share with my students that I was a Hill Hawk.” Sometimes those childhood memories are very close. Two years ago she had a student who currently lived in her childhood home. They discovered the student’s room was her old room.

like being able to share with my students that I was a Hill Hawk.” she played on the playground at the Southwest Clubhouse on Tipperary Trail - just like they do now. She tells them about playing at the pond and along the creek at what is now Peterson Park just south of Highway 2 just like they do now.

“For me, that was super cool,” McInerny said, adding that the student wasn’t nearly as excited.

Every year she has students complete a writing assignment in which they draw a map that brings back memories. She always draws a map of the neighborhood so she can tell stories about her childhood.

Students are more interested in her memories of growing up in the neighborhood. She tells them about how

December TeamMates of the Month

Sara and Alexa: Foundation of laughter “I can count on one hand the amount of times I’ve won in our three years and counting,” says Sara. “If we happen to have that one time where I’m ahead, the rules seem to change.” Sara and her mentee Alexa laugh. The pair loves to compete over card games like Trash, Qwixx, and classics like Slapjack and Uno. “I don’t change the rules!” retorts eighth-grader Alexa, amused. “She remembers a rule she didn’t remember at the beginning,” clarifies Sara with a smile. “My daughter is the same age, so I understand. I don’t win at home either.” Laughter is the foundation of this TeamMates match. They recall a time recently when a class its their usual meeting place. They had to play cards in the back of a study hall full of Alexa’s classmates, as the pair stifled their giggles and competitive banter. Alexa, a student at Cathedral of the Risen Christ (which happens to be Sara’s alma mater), is the oldest of six children and is the only daughter in the family. Sara praises Alexa’s maturity and helpfulness. “By being the oldest sibling, she has responsibilities to help with the younger kids. She is able to do a lot of things that not a lot of people her age can do.” Alexa enjoys having another female in her life to visit with. “Meeting with Sara gives me something to look forward to for the week and then after the weekend. We get to talk about things I may not want to talk about with my siblings.”

“I get to break up my day and just hang out with her. I learned early on that TeamMates is as rewarding for us mentors as the mentees.” Their carefree weekly visits also provide a light-hearted break in a stressful year. “For me,” says Sara, “It’s just knowing that with all the craziness of work and the world and everything, there is this thing that is not too serious; it’s laid back. I get to break up my day and just hang out with her. I learned early on that TeamMates is as rewarding for us mentors as the mentees.”

For Alexa, continuing her mentorship with Sara has provided some familiarity and consistency in a year unlike any other. “It was exciting to see her again, and just being able to leave the classroom like we normally would, and talk to her and play games and just have fun.”

Community Awareness Series

Youth Mental Wellness Our youth are our future’s greatest asset. Schools, parents, caregivers and communities all play a role in providing supportive pathways for our youth as they navigate childhood and adolescence. SCIP (School Community Intervention and Prevention) is partnering with Lincoln Public Schools, Bryan Independence Center and the Lancaster Prevention Coalition to put on a series of valuable presentations about how to support the health and wellbeing of our community’s youth. TCA pathway leads student to teaching career, back to LPS As a senior at Lincoln Southeast High School, Zoe Prenda was unsure about her college plans - or if she would go at all. Then she enrolled in the K-12 education pathway at The Career Academy (TCA). “I was not very good at school and I was looking for a way to be engaged again,” she said. “TCA really ignited the spark I needed to love school again.” Prenda graduated from Southeast in 2016, attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and now is among the first students from the K-12 education pathway to enter the teaching profession. She started teaching first grade at Everett Elementary School this year. “I have always dreamed of teaching at LPS,” Prenda said. She credits TCA with cementing her decision to be a teacher and preparing her for college. She also was able to immediately start taking courses for her education major because of the credits she earned while at TCA, which is a partnership with Southeast Community College. “I could go on and on about TCA. I loved the program, I loved the teachers, I loved being able to do that as a high schooler,” Prenda said. LPS Associate Superintendent for Human Resources Eric Weber said the school district hopes to continue to draw upon the pool of TCA graduates who eventually move into teaching jobs. Simply put, they have an inside track when applying for an LPS teaching job. “Zoe is a perfect example of what we want that program to do. She came

through LPS, she had this opportunity she didn’t know was going to be there and she took advantage of that,” Weber said. “She came through TCA strong, went into her four-year program and when she came out and we had the chance to recruit her, it was a no-brainer.” Another no-brainer? Being a teacher, Prenda said. “It’s the best profession in the whole wide world.”

Sustainability at Lincoln Public Schools

Keeping construction waste out of the landfill Many people know about our school recycling and composting programs, but our waste diversion efforts are not restricted to the school-day activities. There are several 2020 Bond Issue projects starting up this school year that will have construction and demolition waste to be sorted, as well. LPS has Construction Waste Management guidelines that all contractors must follow, whether they are building a brand-new school or renovating existing spaces. All sites must divert at least 80% of their waste from the landfill through salvaging and recycling efforts. Standard materials that get recycled include scrap wood, metal, concrete/block, and cardboard. As with all waste-sorting efforts, signage and communication is critical. Thanks to funding from the Nebraska Department of Environment and Energy Waste Reduction and Recycling Grant Program, magnetic signs for those standard materials were designed to include both English and Spanish descriptions and images of the accepted items. These designs come from Recycle Across America, an organization that is dedicated to providing a society-wide, standardized labeling system for recycling bins to make it easier for people to recycle correctly. We also strive to salvage and reuse materials when possible. For example, if a classroom ceiling is updated, the old tiles may be saved and reused elsewhere in the school whenever one is damaged. Or a cabinet that no longer fits in a renovated space may be reused at another building or auctioned to the community. More than 2,900 tons of material was recycled from the 2014 bond projects, and that number is expected to be even higher for all of the 2020 bond projects!

Kicking off 2021 with a twist By Michelle Welch, RDN, LMNT, LPS Wellness Now that we’ve been able to kiss 2020 goodbye, how do we make the most of 2021 with our families? Goal set as a group and individually. No matter if you are five or 55, writing down goals that are meaningful can have powerful impact. Teaching kids how to set specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time specific (SMART) goals will be a tool they will use for a lifetime. Goals can be anything from memorizing your mom’s phone number within a month, to cleaning out the corners of your bedroom monthly, to fun travel goals when conditions and budgets allow. Wear more bright colors. This may sound a bit silly, but winter doldrums can be battled with simple efforts such as increasing color in our wardrobe or surroundings. Sometimes it’s the little things that can enhance and brighten moods. Seeking sunlight and walks on milder days can help fight off the impact of wintery weariness, as well. Mix up your meals. Be it different spices or sides, making a meaningful effort to jazz up your family meals can add a fun twist to the new year. One easy example is trying different types of apples and oranges. You just might discover a new family favorite. Tackle tech habits. Sometimes opportunities such as the start of a new year give you the courage to set new habits in place. Since most devices give you usage information, having real discussions about how to shrink screen time to a reasonable level can help harvest back time to have fun with the family or return to hobbies that have been lost in the glow of screens. A place to start: Set consistent curfews for phones to be turned in and kept in parents’ bedrooms to help boost sleep and cut back on distractions. Celebrate the twist of silver linings. As we near a year of life lived much closer to home, keep connecting with your kids over what they have found to be positive about these times. What would they love to see stick with how your family functions? Much of what you might find is that though we all love being out and about, they greatly value more face time with you and potentially eating more meals together as a family. Here's wishing you and yours a happy and healthy 2021!

LPS receives historical donation of 700 guitars At first, Gary Reber thought it must be a typo. Reber is the annual and major gifts officer for the Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools. He was the one who first read the message from someone who wanted to donate 700 guitars to the school district. “I initially was skeptical,” Reber said. But it’s true: Local guitar shop owners Dennis Zager and his, Dennis Zager Jr., are making the donation, one of the largest ever for LPS music instruction. The guitars were received at the LPS distribution center the week of Dec. 7 and delivered to schools the following week. The donation was fortuitous. Reber and LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen recently spoke about the need for more guitars.

“Donor generosity is something that never ceases to amaze me,” said LPS Supervisor of Music Lance Nielsen. “It is humbling to know LPS students and staff have so many people looking out for them.” The elder Zager was part of the musical duo Zager & Evans, who found fame when they wrote the number one song of 1969, “In the Year 2525.” Zager and his son, both of whom live in Lincoln, now make guitars that are sold around the world. “The guitar really changed my father's life growing up and he wanted to give that opportunity to other children,” Zager Jr. said. “Lincoln's also been wonderful to our family and we just wanted to give a little back.” Nielsen added, “Music is one of those important classes that inspires and engages students to do well in school and having

an opportunity to play a guitar might be that defining moment for a student, just like it was for Denny Zager.”

Lincoln High theater qualifies for state one-acts Lincoln High School qualified for the State Play Production Championships, the only representative from Lincoln Public Schools and one of only six schools in the state. Cast and crew performed their one-act play, "Lafeyette No. 1," Dec. 11 at the Johnny Carson Theatre in Norfolk.

LPS and BCHS announce new Medical Science Focus Program to open in 2022

A partnership between Lincoln Public Schools and the Bryan College of Health Sciences will launch the Medical Science Focus Program set to open with the new high school located at Northwest 48th and West Holdrege streets in the fall of 2022. “LPS continues to look for opportunities to collaborate with community partners that will engage our students and enhance their experiences while we prepare them to graduate college and be career ready,” said LPS Superintendent Steve Joel. “We look forward to working with Bryan College of Health Sciences in providing students with this exciting choice for exploring careers in the medical sciences.” BCHS President Rich Lloyd hopes getting high school students to explore medical sciences will help increase interest in an industry with growing demand. “The need for qualified health care workers in Lincoln and surrounding areas is not going away. To start building interest in the medical sciences early on, is imperative to building our work force well into the future. We look forward to partnering with LPS to build a meaningful pathway into the medical sciences for high school students,” Lloyd said. Through hands-on, immersive experiences and dual-credit classes, the program will prepare students for a variety of careers in the medical field. Students will begin course work their freshman and sophomore years as health science curriculum will be integrated into math, science and health classes. Juniors and seniors will be able to enroll in the dual-credit courses to earn early college credit.

Face to face courses will include Certified Nurse Aid (CNA), Phlebotomy and Anatomy and Physiology. Labs and classrooms for the focus program will be located inside the new high school. Focus program students will also be matched with BCHS students as part of a mentoring program, and there will be shadowing opportunities available. James Blake, LPS director of strategic initiatives and focus programs, says this program challenges LPS students to explore fields in medical sciences and will prepare them to meet the demands of advanced medical careers. “For students who know they want to enter the medical field, they will be highly engaged in this program," Blake said. “For those who do not see a medical career as their end goal, this will still enhance their problem-solving and critical-thinking skills. These skills are essential to future success in any field.” The focus program is designed to be affordable and accessible to LPS students and their families. Non-credit experiences will be available to students free-of-charge. Students who opt to take classes for college credit can do so at a reduced tuition rate. The Foundation for Lincoln Public Schools will also raise funds to help with scholarships for the program.
