An entire city has worked hand-in-hand with schools and students during a water shortage to preserve our supplies. Community stakeholders come together to talk about how the future of LPS facilities can best accommodate our children’s futures. Students lend a helping hand with local non-profits, people come together to clean up their school grounds, schools raise awareness and donations by walking for weekend food backpacks.

These are just a few examples of our amazing community and why we are proud to be an active partner with Lincoln.

April TeamMates of the Month

Carrie and Monika: ‘Take Care of It’ Whether friendship drama, school stress or other life struggles, Monika can count on her TeamMate of five years to remind her to “take care of it,” a maxim that encourages the eighth-grader to deal with issues rather than avoid them. With Carrie’s consistent support, Monika has been able to improve her habits, grades and relationships.

Carrie and Monika were first matched when Monika was in third grade at Hill Elementary School. Monika received an announcement in her Friday take-home folder about TeamMates and learned that her grandma had been a TeamMates mentor, compelling her to participate in the program. Similarly, Carrie’s grandfather had a great passion for TeamMates and dreamed of watching his mentee graduate from high school. Sadly, he passed during his mentee’s senior year. A mental image of her grandfather’s mentee sitting by his bedside while in hospice left an indelible mark on Carrie’s memory.

As with many matches, the first few meetings felt a bit awkward. But then, Carrie discovered that Monika enjoyed the outdoors, so they began taking walks. As they walked, Monika opened up, and their bond formed.

“We play a lot of Uno, and I always win,” Monika says.

“That’s because you cheat,” Carrie retorts with a smile.

Over the five years of walking, talking, playing games and growing their friendship, Carrie has seen Monika change. “She is more confident, more focused in school and has shown academic growth. She’s turning into a wonderful young lady.”

The trust that has been built over the years allows Carrie to be more straightforward and real about life issues. “She’s resilient,” Carrie says. “She’s been through tough things, and here she is with a smile on her face.”

Because Monika hopes to be a volleyball player in high school, one day Carrie enlisted the help of Monika’s counselor, Mrs. Beatty, to help them work on Monika’s overhand serve. The only place available to practice was a hallway near the gym. The crazy serving lesson, balls bouncing off the walls and ceilings of the hallway and curious looks by other students stands as one of their favorite memories. “I was embarrassed but also thankful for the help,” Monika says.

Both Carrie and Monika believe they are an excellent match. “We just clicked. I can easily talk to her, and we trust one another,” Carrie says.

Although they love to joke around, Carrie knows that, at this point, they can discuss hard things, knowing that Monika will listen to her. “She knows she can depend on me.

The individual attention she gets doesn’t happen much in our world.”

“We always wish we had more time when we meet,” Monika says. The two talk about their families, friendships and the struggles of life. “When we meet, Carrie boosts me up.”

What surprises Carrie most about TeamMates is how meaningful their relationship is. “It’s such a small amount of time that has such a big impact. It’s a little thing, but it’s making a big difference in both of our lives.” Her own experience with Monika along with the memory of her grandfather and his mentee remaining bonded until her grandfather’s death speak to the long-lasting influence of TeamMates.

Monika feels the impact, as well. “I have a person to talk to, someone to help me, someone to connect with.” With Carrie by her side, Monika is celebrating accomplishments and facing difficulties. She’s “taking care of it” and experiencing success.

Plaster masks take shape at Rousseau Elementary Fifth-graders in Tabi Zimmerman’s art class at Rousseau Elementary School recently finished what is traditionally a favorite project among her students: the creation of personalized plaster masks.

“Throughout the years I have done this project, students will say they have kept their masks through high school and longer because they were proud of their work,” said Zimmerman, who has taught with Lincoln Public Schools for 23 years.

Creating the masks was a multi-step process that spanned several weeks, beginning with research about masks throughout various cultures during different periods of history. Students drew at least three ideas for their masks and shared them with classmates to reflect and revise. Over two days, students worked with classmates to make their base plaster masks. Finally, students painted their masks and added any final artistic flourishes based on their designs.

Zimmerman said the mask project pushes students to explore their creativity, problem solving and flexibility.

“This, as with most art challenges, offers students a way to connect their personal interests and ideas with their art,” she said, adding: “The process of creating gives students opportunities to plan, design various outcomes, examine results and make decisions as to what to use in the final design.”

Her students gave the plaster mask project rave reviews, as usual.

• Amaris: “I liked this project because using the plaster, making the mask and also experiencing it being made on me was fun and exciting.”

• Gavyn: “In fourth grade I was really looking forward to making plaster masks. Now when I did it I absolutely loved it! I loved making it with my creativity.”

• Kai: “I like it because it lets us kinda let go and be creative.”

• Tanea: “I was looking forward to this project because it sounded super fun. Also it was giving us a chance to be creative. I liked the process of it.”

Schoo social studies teacher sings history to life Cody Thatcher is definitely not a vocal music teacher.

“I can’t sing at all,” said the seventh-grade social studies teacher from Schoo Middle School.

What he can do is teach history - and teach it very creatively. Thatcher is known among students, colleagues and parents for incorporating history lessons into parody versions of popular songs. Under the alias DJ Thatch, he writes the lyrics, records the songs, then posts them as YouTube videos with the lyrics displayed on the screen while the song plays.

Thatcher is the subject of the latest episode of “Stories from Lincoln Public Schools,” the new weekly podcast about the people, activities and programs that make LPS so special. This episode includes snippets of Thatcher’s songs during an interview in which he talks about how he started writing these parodies, how they have evolved and how they help him connect with students.

So far he’s recorded four songs: • “Silk Road Anthem,” a parody of “Dirt Road Anthem,” by Jason Aldean.

Thatcher’s version focuses on the ancient network of trade routes formally established during the Han Dynasty of China. This was Thatcher’s first song, recorded during the 2017-18 school year. It’s still his most popular, with more than 1,000 views on his YouTube channel.

• “That’s How I Live That Caesar Life,” a parody of “That’s What I Like,” by Bruno Mars. The DJ Thatch remake includes the lyrical gem, “Republic to empire, overnight/I’ll be dictator for life/That’s how I live that Caesar life, that Caesar life, that’s how I live that Caesar life, that Caesar life/Great statues honoring my life/Paved roads and Coliseum fights.”

• “Alexander,” a parody of “Blank Space,” by Taylor Swift. This instant classic offers a four minute, 13 second overview of the life of Alexander the Great from Macedon.

• “The Crusades Are Finally Over,” a parody of “Closer,” by the band Chainsmokers. Thatcher’s version includes the lyrics, “Christians lost Palestine and Antioch/’Cause Pope Innocent won’t stop/No Pope Innocent won’t stop.”

Thatcher’s parodies play off popular radio songs that most middle school students would recognize. Something they can already hum.

“I’ve had tons of kids say that during tests, or when they need this information, they can play the song in their head,” he said.

His fellow teachers play the songs in their classrooms. You can occasionally hear one of them blaring from the Schoo gym during a physical education class. Students have been known to play his music in the car on their way to and from school.

“History gets a bad rap for being boring - and it can be boring if you choose for it to be boring. I refuse for it to be boring.”

Thatcher has nine more songs in the bank. His next release, “In My Paintings,” covers the Renaissance and is sung to the tune of “In My Feelings,” by Drake.

His work as DJ Thatch is just one way he tries to make history fun and engaging for students. He sometimes wears costumes that relate to the material they’re studying. Earlier this week he dressed as a plague doctor - complete with black robe and beaked mask - for their unit on the Black Plague. He’s also donned a white toga with a gold-colored sash as he welcomed students to “Caesar Thatcher’s Classroom.”

“The biggest compliment I get from kids at the end of the year is, ‘I never liked social studies until I had you,’ or when parents say, ‘I wish you would have been my social studies teacher.’ History gets a bad rap for being boring - and it can be boring if you choose for it to be boring. I refuse for it to be boring.”

Learning Lunch gives audience a taste of budget process The crafting of the Lincoln Public Schools budget is a complex, year-round process. It’s filled with difficult decisions every step of the way. At the February 26 LPS Learning Lunch, those in attendance got a small taste of what it’s like to make those decisions.

LPS Associate Superintendent of Business Affairs Liz Standish offered an overview of the budget and the budget-making process, then asked audience members to participate in a hands-on activity with others at their table. They were tasked with prioritizing more than a dozen budget items, such as elementary school teachers, counselors, utilities, deferred maintenance and instructional supplies.

All groups reported at the end of the activity that they struggled to make such decisions. It’s the same balancing act for the Lincoln Board of Education and LPS administrators, Standish said.

“I think that’s what’s great about Lincoln. We care about serving students well - we also care about having great places for students to learn and for employees to work,” she said.

Tips to Finish Strong

by Michelle Welch, RD, LMNT, LPS Wellness Facilitator After a long, tough winter, each of us is glad to be soaking up a little spring fever. That said, the distraction of spring activities and longer days may make focusing on this last quarter of school success a bit more challenging. How do we as parents help keep our kids on track to finish this school year strong?

Schedule fun. After a long day of working hard, kids (and adults) need time for active play. If your kids are lucky enough to be able to bike or walk to school, it already gives them a chance to build more movement into their day. If your student(s) is not engaged in spring or summer sports that keep them active most days of the week, do what you can to build in active fun. It’s great for the brain and a healthy hour of movement may help them be ready to get back inside and refocus on successful homework completion. It may also lead to much improved sleep.

Keep sleep. With more hours of light and spring activities, bedtime can accidentally drift late. Build earlier starting bedtime routines, such as set technology turn in/turn off times as well as bath times to help keep kids from having sleepy starts.

Break the fast. Most kids feel the weight of testing that happens during much of this month. Full bellies help them do their best.

Using school breakfast is a great way to destress kids (and parents). Breakfast is just a bit later than it would be at home and can lead kids to be less hungry mid-morning. It also keeps you away from the distraction and drama of the pick-up/drop-off high traffic and potential for tardiness. Most every parent

would celebrate one less item to deal with in the morning and dealing with toast sweat may be checked off the list. Check with your school to find out their specific breakfast time. Finally, it’s a great chance for kids to have some social time with friends and be ready to take on classwork after the bell rings.

Support positive thinking. Helping our kids frame their day in a positive way can have much to do with how we approach them.

Keep supporting your students in finding their strengths. Keeping mealtimes positive is one great tool. The same may be said for our interactions at drop-off and pick-up times. When you can, schedule 15-20 minutes of focused time with your child daily as connection time.

Reading a book, taking a walk, playing a game or whatever fits your child. When you can inject little moments of focused positive time, it opens up conversation and trust.

Help kids seek help. If your child is struggling academically or with their mental or physical health, help them seek the support they need. Often kids don’t know how to seek the right kind of help. Keep your eyes peeled on Synergy and help them find support earlier versus later in the quarter. Trust, but verify.

School counselors and social workers are great resources to help find LPS resources. On the health frontier, establishing a medical practice/ provider as your medical home is helpful. They can also help you with referrals if you need help in managing physical or mental health. In Nebraska, one resource for those needing mental health support is at the Nebraska Family Helpline at 888-866-8660.

There’s a first for everything, including the Thank You Teacher recognition breakfast. For the first time in 20-plus years of hosting the event, a surprising amount of snow that fell in Lincoln overnight on March 7 forced Lincoln Public Schools officials to cancel the annual breakfast at the Governor’s Mansion due to unsafe winter driving conditions.

Even though the event wasn’t held as planned, we are honored to announce this year’s Thank You Teacher award winners.

“Anyone who chooses to work in a middle school is either a saint or insane,” wrote Lincoln East High School senior Veronica Chapman in her nomination of Valerie Bergo, Irving Middle School counselor. “At a time in our lives when many students were feeling closed off and lost, Mrs. Bergo was a welcoming beacon of light.”

Five educators were selected among 500 written nominations in the annual Thank You Teacher contest, which asks students throughout the community to write about how a favorite teacher impacted their lives.

Lincoln Southeast High School English teacher Julie Krueger inspired Southeast junior Trinity Babcock not only in class, but in her community interactions, as well.

Babcock wrote: “Mrs. Krueger changed my perspective on how I go about everyday life by showing me that no matter who you are, you are able to stand up and make a difference. I now feel like I can make a difference too and by setting strong goals I am able to accomplish anything.”

A hand-written letter from Jackie Stoebner, third-grade student at Meadow Lane Elementary School, described how her teacher Ardis Koehn is supportive and encouraging of her classmates: “If anyone is having a bad day, she will make us feel a thousand times better than before….”

For a Rousseau Elementary School Early Childhood parent, it was the great strides that her son, Owen, had made – thanks to his teacher, Stephanie Emry. Owen’s mother, Mary Monahan, wrote: “The first weeks were hard but she said that they would meet him where he was at… Five months later and he loves school.”

A team of first-grade teachers at Riley Elementary School wanted to honor the work and dedication of former colleague, retired teacher Kathy Wortman. Wortman still substitute teaches within the school and impacts the lives of children daily.

“She truly loves working with children, and helping them to be the best version of themselves,” wrote Vickie Neilly, Jenna Adamson and Nikki Janssen. “I watched the wonderful things she did with students and could see that she was a special kind of teacher.”

New program offers different path to high school diploma There are many potential reasons why students drop out of high school, even when they’re just a few courses away from walking across that stage to receive their diploma.

Some need to work full time to help support their family.

Some experience traumatic events that throw their lives into chaos. One recent student moved between cities and states so much in one year that she collected six W-2 forms.

For 19-year-old Linh, it was a series of setbacks that led her to drop out of Lincoln North Star High School last year.

“Just a lot of personal issues,” she said.

There currently are close to 1,000 young men and women under the age of 21 living in Lincoln who dropped out of school at some point and have not re-enrolled. Graduation Pathways, a pilot program through Lincoln Public Schools, provides some of these former students an alternate way of attending school again and earning their diploma.

“Our goal is to support academic success by providing a different delivery setting - one with flexible schedules for students,” said Chris Schefdore, LPS Youth Development Team navigator. “The end result would be that students will become re-engaged in their education.”

Graduation Pathways offers night classes on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 6-8 p.m., at the Bryan Community Focus Program building near 48th and O streets. Students can take Oral Communication, the Take Charge financial literacy course, a Work Experience course and various eLearning options. To be eligible for the program, students must have earned at least 200 of the 245 credits required to graduate from LPS. Roughly 100 of the 1,000 students in Lincoln who have dropped out are currently eligible.

The program began with the 2018-19 school year and its enrollment has steadily increased from five students to its current level of more than 30. The program produced its first LPS high school graduate in November.

“As we see the number of student participants increase, we know that the program is addressing a need. We’re happy to support students who understand the importance of completing their high school degree,” said LPS Director of Federal Programs Linda Hix. “These students will be ready for college and career opportunities and that will benefit our community.”

Graduation Pathways has been a savior for students such as Linh, who started in January. She usually comes to class straight

from her full-time job at a nail salon.

“I think it’s much easier for me. I can work at my own pace and it’s not too many classes too many days of the week,” she said. “That works around my work schedule. It’s perfect for people who have harder work schedules that aren’t so flexible.”

Linh needs four courses to graduate. She’ll take three of those through Graduation Pathways and her final course during summer school. After that, she’ll continue to work full time and possibly attend Southeast Community College to earn an associate’s degree.

No matter what she does, she’ll have options.

“I’ll be a high school graduate and that means a lot.”

CELEBRATING EARTH

incoln Public Schools and a host of community education partners held the 25th annual Earth Wellness Festival at Southeast Community College on March 20-21. The event drew roughly 3,000 Lancaster County fifth-graders to the college’s Lincoln campus for a series of creative and hands-on lessons in the areas of water, land, air and living resources. Festival organizers worked closely with LPS and other districts to ensure the activities and materials correspond with their fifth-grade curriculum. The 300 volunteers and presenters included educators, environmentalists and government representatives.

This annual celebration reminds parents, students and school personnel that fueling up at breakfast also means winning in the classroom.

During the week of March 4-8, Rousseau Elementary School piqued student interest and even doubled student breakfast participation with week-long activities including taste-testing new products, a “build your own parfait” day, “bring a friend to breakfast day” and special visitors from the police and fire departments.

Moore students create signature donuts, raise money Students in Amber Oligmueller’s sixth-grade family and consumer science course at Moore Middle School were treated to a pretty sweet baking lesson recently.

They not only created their own signature donuts, they also had their donuts judged by Moore’s school resource officer, Lincoln Police Officer Alan Pickering. His top five choices were forwarded to Hurts Donut, a donut shop in downtown Lincoln, who then picked the top two student-made donuts.

Hurts Donut recreated the first- and second-place donuts and sold them on March 24. All of the proceeds went to Moore and its fundraising efforts for the BackPack Extra Mile Walk.

Students worked in pairs. Ruby Sitzman and Katelyn Obuchowski were the winning bakers and they actually created two donuts that work in tandem.

The donuts were formed in the shape of a butterfly, one with different shades of yellow frosting to represent sunlight, the other in shades of blue to represent moonlight. The cake donuts were decorated with edible pearls, gummy worms and googly eyes.

“When I was little I used to like to catch butterflies so I thought it would be cool,” Obuchowski said.

“And we thought of using bright colors and dark colors like day and night,” Sitzman added.

Kalli Rhodes and Hope Gibbons created the second-place donut with the theme “Under the Sea.” Oligmueller said the lesson incorporated creativity and teamwork, as well as a chance to involve Pickering in a classroom activity so he could continue to build relationships with students.

“The donuts were just a perk,” she said.

North Star Life Skills students create Nebraska masterpiece Life Skills students at Lincoln North Star High School recently painted an eye-catching collage of the state of Nebraska, with each student completing four or five counties by using alternative methods of painting and materials.

Students in the Life Skills art class taught by Kolbi Stahl and Tiffany Wiley used materials such as bubble wrap, yarn and sticks, as well as different kinds of paint brushes, to create the colorful work of art that now hangs outside their classroom. Above the collage is the phrase, “It’s not for everyone,” a nod to Nebraska’s new tourism campaign slogan, “Honestly, it’s not for everyone.”

“Oh my gosh, they had so much fun. They were covered in paint and they loved it,” Stahl said. “They did a really great job.”

Life Skills programming is for students working more than three grades below grade level. Students learn academics, as well as job-related skills and others that help them live more independently, such as how to do laundry, interact appropriately with others and communicate effectively.

Construction Club a prime example of community partnerships Lincoln’s Community Learning Centers (CLCs) offer students from Lincoln Public Schools the opportunity to participate in about 520 after-school clubs per week, spread out among all 26 CLC sites.

Nearly all of these clubs are made possible through community partnerships and volunteers. There’s no better example than the Construction Club at the Arnold Elementary School CLC. The idea for the club was hatched during a conversation between Dayna Krannawitter, the Arnold CLC school community coordinator, and Katie Wilson, executive director of the Associated General Contractors Nebraska Chapter, a statewide construction trade association.

“We started talking about getting employment experience and job skills experience to kids early on in life, earlier than middle school and high school,” Krannawitter said.

Students in the Construction Club learn through a variety of activities, such as building a detour around a bathroom to account for traffic flow and using concrete forms and wooden blocks to build structures they design.

One of the club’s volunteers, Steve Ragoss from MTZ Construction, said it may be on a smaller scale but the students are learning about what construction professionals do every day. “You draw a plan, you build, you execute the plan and see if it works,” he said.

Olivia, a club member and third-grader at Arnold, said she’s learned even more than that.

“Sometimes things don’t work out but you can make different things that do,” she said.

“And you can share your ideas,” added fellow club member Emily, a fifth-grader at Arnold.

Krannawitter emphasized that the Construction Club - and other clubs like it - offer hands-on, real-world learning experiences that aren’t usually available during the school day.

“We could not do as much as we do without our community partnerships,” she said. “We have lots of great partners that come in and provide these great learning experiences for our kids.”

Fresh powder, fresh idea for P.E. unit

Lefler Middle School physical education teacher Jeff Pappas had an idea earlier this month to turn a negative - all of that snow that fell on Lincoln - and turn it into a positive: a cross-country skiing unit for his eighth-grade classes.

“I don’t want them to think that just because it’s winter we can’t be active,” Pappas said.

Aside from all that snow, he also realized that Lefler is perfect for cross-country skiing because of the abundance of wide-open, flat land to the east and south of the school.

Lincoln Public Schools rented 30 sets of skis, poles and boots from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Outdoor Adventures Center for students to use the week of March 4-8. All of the students had two class periods to ski.

Matt Avey, LPS curriculum specialist for health and physical education, applauded Pappas for his ingenuity.

He said LPS has incorporated flexibility into its physical education curriculum so teachers such as Pappas can act on ideas when they have them, while still meeting state standards.

“It’s a unique opportunity that our kids wouldn’t get otherwise,” Avey said.

That was definitely the case for at least one of the students, Izjeilah.

“I thought it was a fun experience, just being able to ski,” she said. “I’ve never been able to ski before."
