What a Wonderbowl World Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl Opening in Lincoln This Fall The bowling alley experience you’re used to probably looks a little like this: 60-foot lanes, 15-inch pins, a variety of bowling balls ranging from 6-14 pounds, and maybe a few bumpers if your bowling skills aren’t totally up-to-par. Shoes that are guaranteed to ruin your outfit are required, and it always smells like greasy food and sweaty feet. You never know what to expect when it comes to the music they decide to play, and unless you are avid bowlers, it’s typically a laughable family adventure. Regardless of all the silly quirks regular bowling alleys contain, we love and enjoy them anyway. If you’re looking for a small change in scenery and something to do in your “spare” time, then Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl should be next on your bucket list. Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl is similar to your traditional bowling experience, but everything is smaller — it’s mini bowling! The lanes are about half the size, the pins are 7 inches tall, and the bowling balls are the size of a grapefruit. They

2 |

fa l l 2022

all weigh 2.5 pounds, which means less time figuring out which bowling ball weight will work best for you. These mini bowling balls don’t have any holes, so your fingers aren’t at risk of getting stuck. Half the size, twice the fun, and no untrendy shoes are required here.

“Lincoln is a great community with a vibrant entertainment scene and we’re excited to be a part of that. We hope to cater to both families and adults looking for a night out.” - The Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl Team

The Lincoln location will have a two-lane party room that can accommodate up to 40 guests, so birthday parties are sure to be a hit here. Wings, pizzas, phillies, sliders, hot dogs, pretzel bites, jalapeno poppers, and fries — you name it, and it’s probably on the menu. Food can be ordered a-la-carte or set up as a buffet. There’s even a full bar available for the adults! Wonderbowl is a great place for team building, date nights, family outings, and everything in-between. Whether you’re 6 or 96, you’ll be sure to enjoy yourself here. The expected opening is mid-to-late October.

Namesakes Bob and Willie King were the inspiration for Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl. They were a husband and wife bowling team who were extremely active, participating in at least 10 leagues a week from 1955-1980. Bob and Willie were well-known and well-respected throughout many local lanes. If you’re ready to try a different bowling experience, we invite you to check out Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl this fall. It might seem like “just a mini bowling alley” but this place is different. The atmosphere is cozy, inspiring, and full of life. The alley mixes modern and traditional, creating something beautiful for everyone to enjoy. Parents, if you’re already intrigued, and your kids want you out of the house for a night, head over to Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl in Omaha that’s open for adults 21 years and older. Your kiddos will have to wait until October to join in on the fun, but we promise you it will be worth the wait.

Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl can’t wait to meet you!

Bob & Willie’s Wonderbowl will be opening at 2901 S 84th St. Stay tuned for hours and more information at bobandwillieswonderbowl.com For inquiries about parties, contact emma@alltogethermanagement.com

It’s bowling on a familyfriendly scale! This fall, discover a whole new world of mini bowling at

Supporting Our Teachers A How-To Guide

Teaching can be one of the most rewarding and challenging careers. This is why it is important for parents, students, and the community to celebrate and support teachers often. Bringing an apple or Kleenex to school – while much appreciated – are not what they used to be. Let’s take this opportunity to reevaluate what it means to support teachers in our time. Be a Teacher Ambassador We can all celebrate and encourage teachers each and every day as teacher ambassadors. Make it your mission to show and tell about all the great things teachers are doing. It is easy to get sucked into negativity online and in social groups. Let’s change the narrative and be teacher-positive. If you run into a problem, use the proper channels and remember, one teacher is not a reflection of all, and chances are, problems may be a misunderstanding. Assume the Best We all know there are two sides to every story. At the end of the day, teachers are human too. They have bad days. They deserve grace and an opportunity to explain and – if warranted – to apologize. Avoid a combative exchange by coming to teachers calmly. This should happen first via email and preferably a day or two later, so you and your child and the teacher have time to calm down and think clearly. Maybe the issue wasn’t even really about the

4 |

fa l l 2022

teacher, maybe your kiddo just had a bad day and needed someone to be mad at – we all know parents and teachers are usually the safest people for kids to take their anger out on. Teachers are going to be much more responsive and willing to make things right if they feel supported, respected, and safe engaging with you. R-E-S-P-E-C-T, find out what it means to teachers. Respect Their Time It is easy to forget how requests on teachers’ time can add up. They do a lot, in addition to active teaching. •

Writing and preparing lesson plans with differentiation for each subject and period and accommodations for individual students

Emailing home about upcoming tests or events

Grading, giving feedback, reporting grades online, and emailing home for students failing or at risk

Analyzing the success or failures and reporting smart goals

Preparing for and attending team, staff, and IEP/504 meetings

Professional development - they need to stay on the cutting edge to be relevant

Helping students and sending home missing work

Warming up their coffee, or sprinting to the restroom - if there is time left!

Even though teachers will be more than happy to hear from you, before reaching out, consider: Is this something to talk to your child about to help them advocate for themselves, or, does it require the teacher’s attention?

Donate Time and Supplies

We’re All in This Together

Ask yourself, “What can I do to assist my child’s teacher this year?” Here are a few ideas:

If you know your child might need a little extra assistance in the classroom, share that with his or her teacher in advance. Remember, teachers love their students — anything you can do to help them is appreciated.

Buying gift cards

Purchasing from wish lists

Sharing about funding teacher projects on social media

Volunteering for field trips

Volunteering weekly to stuff folders or read with students

Coming in as a guest speaker

Cutting, laminating, or prepping lesson materials (sometimes this can be done from home)

This list is actually endless. What is your skillset and what can you do to help?

Don’t forget to check in again after winter break. If he/ she still doesn’t take you up on your offer, then just send a nice thank you note and maybe a gift card too. We can all do small things to make a difference. Supporting teachers is a great place to start.

About the Author Hi, I’m Sheena, a former teacher, coach, and professional development leader. I taught in rural Washington state for two years, and at Lincoln Public Schools for five years at Pound Middle School. I have a MA in Teaching from Gonzaga University and have taught just about every subject at some point, though my passion was teaching middle school students who struggled with reading. I loved teaching and presently spend time in a middle school as part of the TeamMates program while working as a Digital Marketing Strategist, and editing for Lincoln Kids Magazine, with Eleanor Creative. I guess you could say, this article is one way I am hoping to support teachers in 2022.

with a rare genetic condition called mucopolysaccharide disorder type I (MPS1), also known as Hurler syndrome. She lacks a lysosomal enzyme needed to break down sugar molecules, and as a result, builds these proteins that are toxic and attack her internal organs. Though not curable, MPS1 is treatable with weekly IV enzyme replacement therapy, and a bone marrow transplant. If left untreated, Makenzie was given less than five years to survive.

Sister, Sister! Get to Know the Wynegar Twins Makenzie and Macey are 9 years old and will be going into third grade this year. Although, Makenzie wants you to know that she is older by about 30 minutes! They have two siblings, an older sister who is 11 and loves to play with them, and a younger brother who they described as “a 4-year-old who talks a lot.” Haha! Makenzie and Macey adore being twins, and there wasn’t a moment where they weren’t giggling and smiling at each other during this interview. Their soft voices and little grins were so contagious that it was impossible to not smile and giggle with them the entire time. For twins, these two have navigated a lot of life in their nine years. And they have done so with a lot of love and grace for each other. When they were born, Makenzie had to spend 24 hours in the NICU as she couldn’t keep her body temperature up. Makenzie was very fatigued and as time went on, she was not reaching developmental milestones like Macey. At 14 months old, Makenzie was seen by a geneticist at Children’s Hospital and Medical Center in Omaha and was diagnosed

6 |

fa l l 2022

At 17 months old, Makenzie and her family packed up their belongings and moved into the Ronald McDonald House for 15 months while she underwent two bone marrow transplants as her first transplant failed and required a second one to be done. Due to having two bone marrow transplants, Makenzie continues to deal with some ongoing complications with her lungs, immune system, and adrenal glands. She continues to have a lot of medical appointments, including IV infusions to boost her immune system, and does weekly physical, occupational, and speech therapies. Though Makenzie’s medical journey has been difficult, she and Macey are involved in many typical 9-year-old activities. Macey enjoys being involved in a lot of school sports, such as softball, soccer, and volleyball, and the activities don’t stop there. Both Makenzie and Macey love to dance, and they take tap and ballet classes at William Henry School of the Arts in Seward. Their faces lit up when they talked about their teacher, Ms. Peyton DavisSchmit, and they both said tap class was their favorite! It made sense to us after learning they are working on cool steps like the Buffalo and Double Time Step. 4-H is an after-school activity the twins are involved in, and every summer, they love to make projects and show cows at the Seward County Fair. They have been showing bucket and stocker feeder calves for two years! Their older sister, Angela, shows the big market steers and heifers.

This summer, Makenzie, Macey, and their mom, Ann, spent a week at the Ronald McDonald House in Minneapolis, MN. We asked them what it was like to stay at the Ronald McDonald House, and they said, “You get to do fun, camp-like activities.” They even went on a few field trips! One time, Cabela’s came to visit and taught them all about fish. They even brought fishing rods and plastic fish to teach them how to catch fish! How fun is that? During their stay, Makenzie had a few doctors’ appointments at The University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. She said her favorite doctors there are Dr. Lund, Dr. Miller, and Dr. Walker! Between her appointments, the Ronald McDonald House, shopping at the Mall of America, paddle boating, sail boating, and riding on a six-person bike, the three of them kept busy during their trip. We are very glad that Makenzie and Macey had a fun trip and it sounds like they can’t wait to start school this fall!

How to Write Poetry Poetry is a special kind of literature that allows you to express your feelings and ideas through different styles and rhythms. There are many ways to create poetry, and with just a few tips and tricks, YOU can do it too! Rhyming

Haiku

The first type of poetry you will learn to write is a rhyming poem. These poems do exactly as they say: rhyme. You can write your rhyming poems in a few different ways:

A haiku is an unrhymed three-lined poem that follows a pattern. A haiku can be about anything you want as long as you follow these three simple rules.

1.

Couplets: two-line poems where the last word rhymes. I met a black spider, who drank apple cider.

2.

Triplets: the same as couplets, but with three lines. You can rhyme the last word in every line for a pattern called AAA, or you can rhyme only the first and third lines for the pattern ABA. A- I love to go on a hayrack ride, A- With all of my friends on either side — A- Through the fields we happily glide. A- It’s time for pumpkin treats, B- Cupcakes and muffins and pies. A- I always eat too many sweets.

You can also create rhyming poems in lines of four once you feel more comfortable with couplets and triplets. These are called quatrain poems!

8 |

fa l l 2022

Line One: 5 syllables Line Two: 7 syllables Line Three: 5 syllables Another way you can think about this is to visualize the syllables: 12345 1234567 12345 For example, say you want to write your haiku about fall. Think of some words and ideas that relate to fall, and then write them out until you have the correct amount of syllables. The summer is through. Leaves fall — scarlet, gold, and brown. Smell the cold-brushed air. Although there are many different types of poems, these are two simple poem types that will help kickstart your poetry writing journey. Just remember, the more you write, the better you will become. Writing poetry takes time to perfect, but there’s no better time to start than now. Keep practicing and you’ll be a poet before you know it!

Fuel Up This Fall With EarthFuel Compost It’s fall which means it’s time to fertilize your soil with all-natural organic matter that comes from EarthFuel compost. Soil is a living, breathing ecosystem with many small microbes and organisms that live within the soil. Just like humans, those organisms need food, water, and air. Using compost to build up your soil's organic matter will add food for those small organisms that live in the soil. Follow these quick tips to get the most out of putting compost on your lawn this fall:

1. Walk around your yard and pick up all your trash, toys, and other items that don’t belong in the yard waste bin. Remember, yard waste (leaves and grass) is banned from the landfill from April 1 – November 30 each year. By removing the trash, toys, and other items from your yard, you help reduce contamination during the composting process when we create EarthFuel Compost.

2. Mow your yard lower than usual, rake the lawn of excess grass clippings and leaves, and place those in your yard waste bin. They will be collected and used to make EarthFuel Compost. If you have branches, those go in the trash— they do not belong in the yard waste bin.

3. Use a shovel to topdress your yard with EarthFuel compost. You can find videos about how to topdress your lawn at lincoln.ne.gov/compost. EarthFuel compost may be obtained for no cost at the North 48th Street Transfer Station. This site is only for small vehicles and/or trailers that do not exceed 60 square feet of cargo area. The material is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Individuals must self-load the compost by hand. To purchase larger quantities of EarthFuel compost, visit the Bluff Road Solid Waste Management facility. The cargo area must be larger than 60 square feet to be purchased and loaded at this facility.

A Place at the Table

On the coloring sheet below, you can see a standard, everyday place setting. We’ve put a placemat down, so that any food that might accidentally fall from the plate or from a sneaky utensil doesn’t hit the table directly.

Understanding Everyone’s Favorite Chore

Forks sit at the left of the plate on top of a folded napkin. There’s a historical reason for this: since most people are right-handed, we allow them to command the knife with their dominant hand, and use the fork as a stabilizing force. That way, there are fewer knife-related accidents at dinnertime.

Setting the table has long been the chore of choice for kids across the country. Sometimes it seems like a frivolous or outdated thing to do, since modern tables rarely employ any of the more intimidating utensils, like oyster forks, fish knives, or butter plates. Still, setting the table is something worth doing because it helps make ordinary meals feel like something special, and creates a sense of continuity. Anywhere you go, you can feel right at home if your fork and spoon are where you usually find them!

The right-handed rule is also why we put spoons and glasses on the right side of the plate — imagine trying to eat soup with your non-dominant hand! Color the place setting below, and next time you set the table, feel confident that there’s good logic for why things are placed that way!

Get in the Game A Lincoln Kid Reviews Video Games BY L I N C O L N B O O N E , L I N C O L N K I D - A G E 1 1

My name is Lincoln. I’d like to give you my opinion on video games and a little about a few that I think most people will love. To me, video games are great mostly for having fun, but also for learning new things and solving problems. I have learned a lot of from playing video games and watching others play. Here are a few of my favorites! These titles are all available at Lincoln City Libraries too.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Breath of the Wild is a fantastic open world game that allows the player to create their own experience whether they want to do the main story, defeat monsters, or just have fun exploring the open world. This game is available on the WiiU and Nintendo Switch. Recommended for ages 12+. Is the downloadable content (DLC) worth it for most of the Breath of the Wild fans? Yes, if you love and put hours into this game, the DLC will give you hours more to come. Trial of the Sword will even upgrade your strongest weapon, the master sword! There is so much more too. You won’t be disappointed.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Minecraft

Super Smash Bros. is a great game where you can battle with or against friends, test your skills against computer controlled players (CPU), or play in fun yet challenging stages in The World of Light.

Minecraft is a game where you can survive, collect materials, and explore the infinitely-generated terrain, whether it be alone or with friends. You can go in creative mode and build huge structures, or even learn about redstone and the endless possibilities of it. If you are into coding, you can also create your own custom features. The possibilities with Minecraft are really endless. I know people who are building replicas of their cities. How fun would it be to team up and build the city of Lincoln in Minecraft?!

This game is available on the Nintendo Switch. Recommended for ages 8+. The DLC for Super Smash Bros. introduces new characters such as Min Min from Arms, Joker from Persona 5, and many more. Some Amiibos in Smash will be a character that you get to train to fight. smashbros.com/en_us/

This game is available on desktop, mobile, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and Playstation. Recommended for ages 7+. minecraft.net/en-us/

zelda.com/breath-of-the-wild/ Many people like me love to play video games on a daily basis. If you’re looking to try something new, there are some new games coming out soon that I think you should know about. Splatoon 3 on Sept. 9, Mario and Rabbids Sparks of Hope on Oct. 20, and Breath of the Wild 2 in spring 2023 are some to look forward to. Happy gaming!
