Two people who will be sorely missed are Chef and Kevin, who share a look back on their careers as their time at Lincoln comes to a close (p.04). It’s not all about endings, though, as we have welcomed several new Fellows (p.11), installed a new organ (p.09) and given Deep Hall a new lease on life (p.08).

Not to be outdone by the achievements of our Fellows, who have been awarded a number of grants (p.11), Lincoln’s students have excelled both academically and in a wide variety of activities. They have organised conferences, travelled abroad to gain work experience across the globe, produced animated films (p.18) and prepared to sail around Britain (p.27). The Chapel Choir had tours to Tokyo and Devon (p.22), and the Boat Club’s bumps in Torpids and Summer Eights saw several crews win blades (p.24).

Many thanks to alumni who also have sent in news updates, which we always read with interest (p.41). In addition to getting married, receiving awards and publishing an impressive number of books, many of you have joined us over the past year for one (or more!) of our events. A run-down of these occasions, which were held in College, London and several cities in the USA, include a Lawyers’ Networking Event this past February and a Medicine Reunion Dinner in July (p.39). The back cover of the magazine lists the events planned for 2011-12, so do note these in your diary.

to support, whether by Oxford and its colleges, or by government. But of course much has changed. The previous government’s goal of increasing the numbers of universities and students has added to the public cost of higher education. Moreover, the time has come when tax-payers are more likely to support the national health system and of course the primary and secondary stages of education.

The UK’s Coalition government of 2010 has radically changed the basis of University funding, reducing the direct government grant for teaching and greatly increasing tuition fees.

Oxford University and its colleges have shown themselves capable of running their own teaching arrangements over many centuries, having secured benefactions and endowments so that relatively poor scholars have access to awards of many kinds. In the 16th century, increasing numbers of undergraduates appeared, with the support of donors. This began in Lincoln’s case in the mid-16th century with the Trappes Scholarships. Such generosity went on for centuries. It was only in the 20th century that the British government started bestowing tax payer commitments on universities following World War I. For much of the 20th century, universities were well supported as a result. From the Butler Education Act of 1944 until the 1980s, students were well maintained for the most part, both in terms of maintenance grants and of course tuition fees. During those years, several generations were immensely fortunate, including my own. Like many others we even thought we were entitled to the benefits of the welfare state. Some indeed still believe that they are entitled

Sooner or later there was bound to be a change in state policy. Whether the current arrangements of the Coalition are effective will have to be seen. But anyone watching the way that higher education funding has developed in recent years must have had some sense that change was going to come, whether dramatically or not. In the last Lincoln College campaign of 2002, we emphasised the importance of fundraising so that we would be ready in the coming years for what we called selfsufficiency. The colleges of Oxford and Cambridge are of course unique in retaining their tutorial systems. Without the support of our alumni and our endowments we were bound to look for long-term independence. A new world is coming into place, suddenly, in 2011.

In the medium and long term, there would be much to be said for a system broadly on the lines of private universities in the United States and elsewhere. In the short term, however, the coming months and years will be very awkward, both for institutions and for the new students. It is already clear that many universities will charge the maximum fee of £9,000 per student for tuition, as indeed Oxford will. It should be noted that at this stage tuition fees will do no more than replace the direct funding for teaching previously provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Moreover it is obvious that Oxford and its colleges will be concerned particularly to assist students from families who have limited financial support. The £9,000 fee is intended to be funded by borrowing that will be returned by students whose career will gradually pay it back.

Tuition fees are in the headlines. There remain however the maintenance loans that all students will be expected to borrow, as in the past. Students on a three-year course would in most cases have to borrow at least £50,000 to cover both fees and loans over the period of their course. These matters in Oxford bring the University and the colleges together, especially on the subject of financial support for students who may require it. In her article on p.29, the Senior Tutor explains what is planned.

At Lincoln, which already has some measure of maintenance support for undergraduates, we will very much need to enhance these bursaries, and also increase the awards available for graduate students who will already have incurred considerable debts. We hope, in our new Campaign, that alumni will join us in addressing this issue.

These are very early days. The first Freshers under the new arrangements will arrive in 2012, but the detailed outcomes are far from settled and could easily be changed again later. At the very least, however, these new arrangements will open up opportunities not only for the relative freedom of universities, but also for the eventual self-sufficiency of colleges. For centuries in the past benefactors and donors were crucial. If Oxford is to remain one of the great universities of the world, fundraising with the help of alumni will be more crucial than ever.

There is also the difference between tuition fees and tutorial fees. The expression ‘tuition fees’ seems very grand.

In fact at most universities, tuition consists of little more than classes and lectures. Oxford and Cambridge do indeed offer classes and lectures. But beyond that they also have tutorial arrangements in groups of two or three with tutors. This is unique. At Lincoln, our Fellows are convinced that maintaining our system for the future is essential; I hope and believe that our alumni agree. ■ Professor Paul Langford Rector

A note from Richard Hardie Chair of the Development Committee I must confess that I hesitated before accepting the Rector’s flattering offer to chair the Development Committee: I’d been involved in alumni activities for a long time (25 years as a Trustee of the Old Members’ Scholarship and Exhibition Trust) so surely we needed a fresher pair of eyes; the Government’s broad acceptance of the Browne Report on the funding of Higher Education had hit the whole system with the force of a thunderbolt; and my interests outside UBS, mainly chairing Hackney's education authority in the east end of London, keep me busy enough.

However, I realised that this was a great opportunity to put my past and current experience to what I hope will be good use. I’ve come to value Oxford, with its collegiate and tutorial system, as an irreplaceable bastion of truth, freedom and excellence, where the finest scholars extend human knowledge and understanding, and where young people can be helped to make sense of a complicated world. Furthermore, I believe strongly that everything possible must be done to encourage all schoolchildren to believe that they can make it to Oxford, unhampered by financial fears, or by a lack of encouragement from their teachers or of self-belief. Oxford colleges put an enormous amount of effort into this (Lincoln is among the leaders), and I believe I can help in connecting the different communities.

I must thank Ian Much for leaving the Development Committee in such a good state, and for agreeing to continue as a member. He made history as the first alumnus presence on the Governing Body, and has led the Committee firmly and with constant good humour. Warm thanks are also due to Christopher Fitzgerald: while retiring from the Committee after more than 20 years’ wonderful service, he has agreed to continue (with Hugh Sloane) as an alumnus representative on the Finance Committee – itself an arrangement which brings expertise and transparency to the finances of the College which alumni of other Colleges should envy.

I am very much looking forward to working with Susan Harrison and our enthusiastic Committee and to meeting Lincoln alumni around the world with the astonishing variety of their chosen walks of life, and to represent all alumni at meetings of Governing Body. I know from my involvement in this year’s brilliantly successful telethon campaign how alumni are already responding to the financial challenges facing the College in supporting, safeguarding and sustaining its moral, intellectual and physical heritage. Building on the strong base already constructed by Susan and Ian, we will be focussing on clusters of support in London, the US and the Pacific Rim. L Richard Hardie

The capacity of the Development Office will be increased to match the urgency of the College’s need. To that end some adjustments are being made to the calendar of regular events including the introduction of an annual event in London, led by the College, at which the Rector and other officers will give an annual report on its progress. The first of these will mark the launch of the Living Lincoln Campaign at the Guildhall on 20 October. I look forward to meeting as many alumni as possible both then and in the next few years, and to helping secure Lincoln’s future. ■ K Front quad

Elman Poole Photographic Prize: Congratulations are due to the winner and runner-up of the inaugural Elman Poole Photographic Prize. Dr Elman Poole (1953) established the prize to encourage photography within Lincoln. Entry was open to all current Lincoln staff and students, and entrants were asked to submit photographs of the College based on the theme ‘Winter at Lincoln’. The photos were judged by a panel, and the top entries were displayed in College during the Turl Street Arts Festival in February. The winner was James Meakin (2009), a graduate student in radiobiology, and the runner-up was Dr Michael Willis, Tutorial Fellow in Chemistry. The winning photograph will be made into Christmas greeting cards, which will be available to purchase in November and December watch this space!

Sustainability Committee: During 2010-11, the Domestic Bursar, Dr Rachel Buxton, successfully re-established the Lincoln College Sustainability Committee. The Committee meets once a term to discuss the how the College might best reduce its carbon footprint, and to make recommendations on appropriate steps to be taken to the Governing Body.

Lincoln number one for international student satisfaction: Recently published results from The Cherwell newspaper’s Student Barometer survey show that international students at Lincoln College are the happiest in the University, with 97% saying they are satisfied with their experience here. JCR President Kevin Smith said in response to these results: “I was delighted - but in no way surprised to hear that Lincoln ranked highest for international student satisfaction. Both College and the JCR work hard to anticipate what unique concerns international students might face, from providing extra storage for luggage to putting on a pizza party the night before Freshers’ Week starts for those who have arrived early. Beyond that, I think the high satisfaction levels of international

Lincoln’s Chef and Butler bid farewell For over 30 years Lincoln’s Chef, Jim Murden, and Butler, Kevin Egleston, have been the illustrious partnership behind every breakfast, lunch and dinner served in College. Their passion, commitment and hard work have seen Lincoln develop and maintain a reputation for being the best place to eat in the collegiate university, and they have earned a place in the hearts of students, staff and guests alike. In 2008 they were honoured for this commitment with the commission of a portrait, which now hangs in the Dining Hall. 2011 marks the end of an era for the College as they each begin their retirement. Imprint has asked them both to look back on their time at the College and share some of their plans for the future.

CHEF – Jim Murden “I grew up in Hertfordshire, and on leaving school I went to a local catering college.

stint working at Bletchley to experience industrial catering – I also met my wife during this time. After that I worked briefly as Assistant District Manager for a group called Gardner Merchant (now Compass), which taught me the management side of the catering industry. I then returned to the West End and worked at the Grosvenor House Hotel for three years before moving to Northamptonshire. With a young family, life in London had become too expensive.

I worked in two country house hotels up there, catering for a lot of spectacular Saturday night dinner dances. By that time I was nearly 30, and I fancied a change. The working hours over Christmas and New Year had been a real devil, especially as I had children, so in February 1976 I saw an advert in The Caterer and Hotelier for a Head Chef at Lincoln College. I got the job and started on 1 July 1976.

“I took over from the previous Head Chef, Reginald Gray, who had been here 40 years. So Lincoln has only had two Head Chefs in 75 years! Life at Lincoln was a complete change from working in hotels – the atmosphere was much more relaxed, and I had weekends off. I inherited a very good apprentice called Sean Parker, but the rest of my team I was able to build from scratch.

“The biggest change that has taken place over my 35 years here has probably been the arrival of female students in 1979. I think it was a very positive change for the College, and it improved the atmosphere. Life in the kitchen has also become much busier. When I started, there was just one small conference each summer – an alumnus called John Grist (1952) ran a language school in Italy, and he would bring a group of students over.

Breadloaf came for the first time in the late 1970s and then the summer conference season grew from there.

“The best part of the job is seeing the Hall full of people and making them happy by cooking good food. I worked with a sous chef in London once who said, “We’re not chefs, we’re entertainers” – giving people a good experience is what it’s all about. It also gives the College a good atmosphere by providing a social focal point, as meal times are the one

point in the day at which everybody comes together. I enjoy seeing alumni come back to College so often as it helps to give the place a really friendly feeling. I like to give them tours of the kitchen when it is not too busy. It is certainly the most spectacular kitchen I have ever worked in, and I am very proud of it.

Maintaining a food preparation kitchen in a Grade 1 listed building is no easy task!

“Keeping standards high is always a challenge, especially as staff come and go. These days there are a lot of people looking for catering jobs, but a few years ago it was difficult to find good staff. I have had times when kitchen porters haven’t turned up, so you have to wash pots and clean the kitchen yourself once the service is over before going home. I have been lucky recently to have two very good sous chefs in Richard and Patrick.

Managing costs is also becoming more of a challenge as food becomes more and more expensive. I try to buy wisely and as locally as possible. I currently use the Covered Market and a greengrocer in Bicester.

“I will miss the people at Lincoln when I retire – the old members and the thousands of students I have cooked for over the years. College life has also been much more compatible with having a family than a life in the hotel or restaurant business would have been. I will also miss the routine of coming in at 7.30am six days a week and coming back in the evenings at least four days.

BUTLER – Kevin Egleston “I grew up in Ireland and after leaving school went to a catering college in Tipperary to train as a chef. Part of the chef course there was to spend the first year working front of house as a waiter. I enjoyed that so much I decided I would stick with it! I got my first job aged 19 as Head Waiter at a hotel in Dublin with six staff. Then the appeal of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones took me to England. I then did stints in Surrey, Jersey, Leicester, and Birmingham, where I met a man who liked my Irish Coffees and asked me to come and run a pub in Oxford. It was White’s Bar on the High (now Jigsaw). After a year I left and got my own pub in St Clements, the Oranges and Lemons (now the Angel and Greyhound). I then worked for six months in the car factory before I saw an advert in The Oxford Journal for an Assistant Butler at Lincoln College. My first day here was 2 February 1981.

“I worked under Ted Busby who when I started had just worked 90 days straight, so he was very happy to see me! He retired in 1991, and that’s when I became Head Butler. I remember finding the College hard to navigate when I started, even though it is only small! But I felt that it was a very friendly place – the members of staff were treated well, everybody knew each other and called each other by their first names. I think this is why I have never wanted to move.

“I would say students have become a bit better behaved in Hall over the last 30 years. When I started all the paintings in Hall had glass over them to protect them from the throwing of food that would happen at student meal times! This started to be removed about 12 years ago,

so we can trust students not to have food fights these days.

“I like the routine of my job very much.

I also enjoy the people I work with, and the opportunities to see alumni back here. I like doing dinners and seeing how happy guests are when they have finished, and the appreciation they express. Functions within the College are always my preference because I know where everything is and exactly what needs to be done when. I was also very honoured that the current rector commissioned the portrait of myself and Chef.

“There was one memorable All Saints’ Day when I was serving sherry for the toast during Second Hall to “The College of the Blessed Mary and All Saints, Lincoln”, and when it was time for the Rector, Eric Anderson, to speak, he stood up and said, “I would like you all to know that as it is All Saints’ Day and this is part of the full name of the College, I would like to make the toast but I can’t because I don’t have a glass of sherry!” So I had given everyone in Hall a glass, with the important exception of the High Table! I will also never forget the night that Tony, my Assistant Butler, accidentally locked two Fellows, Dr Dorigatti and Dr Peskett, in the Lower SCR,

and they had to escape through a window. As Dr Dorigatti only has one leg, this was no mean feat!

“I will miss the friendship of the place most when I retire. And also the routine of coming in at the same time each morning, going home for the afternoon, then returning for the evening. Despite the routine, there is also plenty of variety in every day. It is always great when alumni come back – they always shake my hand and ask how I am, so they feel more like old friends. I will mostly miss the team I work with because they are fantastic. I have enjoyed every minute of my 30 years here.

“I am going to start my retirement with a three-week holiday in Thailand at the start of September. I will also spend some time gardening, painting my house, swimming, cycling and on my boat. It will be nice to have Saturdays off as I enjoy going to watch horseracing and football (I am an Aston Villa fan). I also hope to reconnect with some old friends, as it is hard to keep up with them while working so many evenings. I would like to come back for some part-time work if it were available – I don’t feel 65 and am not quite ready to be put out to graze!”

“In my retirement I plan to spend time down in Dorset with my wife as we are buying a little place near to some friends. I also might do some voluntary work with the Scouts and the local wildlife trust. And perhaps if any colleges or restaurants need a chef for an evening, I will do the odd bit of work – it will be nice not to be tied down and also not to be in charge anymore! My son is also expecting his first child in September, so I will soon be a granddad and I am sure that will take up plenty of my time!”

Introducing: The Domestic Bursary Since the appointment of a Domestic Bursar at Lincoln in the spring of 2010, what was formerly known as the Steward’s Office has evolved into a busy Domestic Bursary, managing all aspects of domestic life at Lincoln. Here, the Domestic Bursar and her staff share an insight into their jobs with Imprint.

Rachel Buxton, Domestic Bursar “I am responsible for making sure that the domestic operations in Lincoln run smoothly. The obvious elements of this are accommodation and catering – but there are a host of other things I oversee, from the development of external business, such as conferences and summer schools, to more routine activities such as maintenance and refurbishment programmes, security, waste and recycling, fire safety, and health & safety. We have around 75 domestic staff across the departments, and together they do a fantastic job of ensuring that we offer a friendly and efficient service to our students, Fellows, staff members, alumni, and visitors to the College.

“I’ve been here just over a year, and I don’t think I’ve yet figured out when the quiet times are! Term-times are, of course, always extremely busy – especially at the start of the academic year with the arrival of a new cohort of students, and again during the admissions period in December, when we have several hundred applicants arriving in a very short space of time. The end of the academic year is also frenetic, as we seek to deep clean the rooms ahead of the arrival of summer schools and conferences at the start of July.

“But to be honest that’s one of the things I love about the job: it’s impossible to get bored, and you never know what situation is going to land in your lap as you walk through the door – whether it’s floods in a basement, a heating system that’s gone down, or pigeons trapped in the Library. And there are also large parts of the job which are strategic rather than reactive, such as developing our conference business, contributing to new 06 College & Fellows

building projects, or improving disabled access across the College premises.

“One of the best things about the role is that it involves interaction with so many different people across the College.

Much of my time is, of course, spent working with the departments I oversee – the Lodge, Buttery, Kitchen, Housekeeping, Gardens and Sports ground, Hall, Deep Hall, Maintenance – and I also work very closely with Accounts, with the College Office, with the Development Office and with the Bursar. I have two wonderful assistants as well – Laura and Lucy. My job would be impossible without them!

“My aim when I started here was to spend my first year getting to know Lincoln and the people who make it such a happy community; I didn’t arrive with any sort of agenda to impose on the College. That said, it is inevitable that I would bring in a few changes in my first year, and there are a couple of areas in particular where I think we’ve made some really positive progress. The first is on the environmental front: we now have a proper mixed recycling regime across the College, and as a consequence have reduced the amount of waste we send to landfill by over a third. For this I am particularly grateful to the student green reps and to our housekeeping team. Also on the sustainability front we have installed some voltage optimisers which are reducing our electricity usage on the main site and at Museum Road by 8-10%.

“Before I moved into management, I was an English Lit academic – I did my DPhil at Hertford College, on Irish and American poetry, and then I had a couple of research fellowships before taking up a permanent teaching job at Oxford Brookes, where I stayed for five years.

Much though I loved that, I decided to make the switch to academic management a couple of years ago – first as a maternity-cover Senior Tutor at Merton, and then when this job at Lincoln was advertised and I jumped at the chance to move here.”

This often involves showing potential clients around College and our annexe site, the EPA Science Centre. College & Fellows Laura Broadhurst, Domestic Bursar’s Assistant “I support the Domestic Bursar on a dayto-day basis by providing her with general assistance and performing a variety of specific duties. These include booking vacation residence for students who need it, updating the student accommodation and finance database (soon to change over to a new system called Forum), responding to maintenance requests from around the College and arranging for repairs to take place. I also deal with external contractors and suppliers, and keep track of all the overtime done by domestic staff so that the information can be passed to Accounts.

“I handle all room bookings and requirements for College, including teaching rooms, guest room accommodation, society bookings, dinners and reception events. I am also responsible for creating the menu cards for dinners, the coding and issuing of key cards, and advising each department of the weekly diary of events. I also create and issue invoices for chargeable bookings, dinners and conferences that take place in College, and ensure said invoices are paid. The busiest times of the year are the periods running up to the Easter and summer vacations. During these times, I am busy preparing for the upcoming conference season whilst ensuring all other College events and dinners run smoothly.

It’s great, every day is different. I also enjoy the interactive nature of the job; I love working with people and this role heavily relies on interactions with the different departments, Fellows and students.

“I interact with most departments on a daily basis! I work with the Kitchen and Buttery with regards to organising dinners and meeting refreshments, in addition to pricing for upcoming and previous events; the Lodge for managing room bookings and guest room accommodation; the maintenance team for organising the particular requirements of room bookings; Housekeeping for room allocations and guest room accommodation; and Accounts for various issues surrounding invoices and booking confirmations. I am also regularly in touch with the Bursary, College Office and Development Office and any other department which requires the use of rooms or accommodation.

“My favourite part of my job is very much the need to juggle. There are often many things that have to be dealt with at the same time and as soon as you start to deal with something, someone knocks on the office door and throws another ball in the air. It’s great, every day is different. I also enjoy the interactive nature of the job; I love working with people and this role heavily relies on interactions with the different departments, Fellows and students.”

I also love the fact that I work with so many departments in College as well as the students. Our office is always filled with people. It’s also a very happy office!

“The busiest weeks for me are the sixth weeks of every term when the vacation residence application deadlines loom. This is particularly the case in Trinity Term when more than 200 students wish to stay on to finish exams or for other reasons.

“I work closely with the Lodge and Housekeeping in relation to student accommodation. I provide them with all relevant information and keep them updated throughout the year to any changes so that they are aware of the comings and goings in College and can deal with the students in the Lodge and the cleaning/preparation of the rooms.

“I love the variety in my job. There are always certain projects that need to be worked on, but on a daily basis anything can happen, and does! I also love the fact that I work with so many departments in College as well as the students. Our office is always filled with people. It’s also a very happy office!”■ College & Fellows 07

confectionary on offer. Students have enjoyed being able to purchase lunches on their University card accounts, although Simon and Marian may lament the surge in popularity: queues now often stretch nearly out of the bar, ensuring that they scarcely get a moment’s respite during peak times!

Deep Hall developments Both literally and figuratively, Deep Hall can be found at the heart of Lincoln College. Generations of students must remember the bar as the starting point for any celebration of significance, as well as the base of so many nights that started innocuously with a the suggestion of a “quick drink” among a group of friends.

After use of the bar dipped in recent years, the JCR and MCR Committees have worked with College to give ‘Deepers’ a facelift in the past 12 months, with all students being given the opportunity to provide feedback and share their views through a college-wide survey. The first and perhaps most significant change was the lowering of drinks prices in time for last summer’s World Cup, a move that surprised absolutely no one by proving highly successful. Additionally, smaller tables were introduced to provide more seating space.

A major theme of the new developments has been catering to a wider range of customers; with this in mind, the lunchtime meal selections have been expanded to include a number of salads and other light options, in addition to the various baguettes, pies, pizzas, fruit, soup, and

Another focal point of the changes has been the stone ‘atrium’ room, with the goal being to make it more of a lounge area where students can bring work in the afternoon or relax in a quieter setting in the evening. The room now features couches and coffee tables, large photos of the College on canvases, various JCR and MCR photographs on the walls, and mounted rowing blades to give the space a much more ‘Lincoln’ feel. Thanks to the generosity of the Annual Fund, plans are in place to improve the lavatory areas, as well as to purchase a coffee machine that will provide highquality espresso-based drinks.

Both student common rooms have begun using the bar for a greater range of social events, including a charity auction of promises,“The L Factor” talent competition, and a whole-College pub quiz involving mixed teams with JCR, MCR, SCR, and College staff members. It seems there is an increasing sense among students that Deep Hall is not simply a place to get a drink, but the centre of the College community.

The one constant in Deep Hall, of course, is barman Simon Faulkner, who must be recognised for his work in support of Lincoln’s students and his patience with our occasional antics! Alumni who know Simon might well imagine the incredulous look he gave when ‘new healthy salad options’ were initially proposed; however, Simon has been instrumental in implementing the modifications to Deep Hall and may deservedly claim his share of the credit for their success. ■ Kevin Smith (2009) JCR President 2010-11

Professor Paul Langford, Rector of Lincoln College, shares his reflections on Lincoln’s six-year project to install and fund a new organ in the Chapel, made by William Drake, a Devon-based organ builder.

On Friday 8 July 2011 we celebrated the official opening of the new organ. David Goode provided a splendid evening of recitation in front of numerous distinguished colleagues, musicians, and above all our benefactors whose donations made the project possible. David is Organist and Head of Keyboard at Eton College, combining this with an international concert career. He has played all over the world, including concerts this year at the Proms, the Vienna Konzerthaus and Rice University, Texas. He has recorded widely since 1994, and, in his work for Radio 3, he has forged a particularly strong relationship with the BBCNOW and the BBC Singers. He is much in demand as a teacher of the next generation of young organists. His recital at Lincoln included ‘Voluntary for Double Organ’ by Henry Purcell, ‘Andante in F’ by WA Mozart and ‘Prelude and Reverie’ by William Harris. After the recital, dinner took place in the Hall. William Drake and his supporters involved in building the organ were present on both accounts. It was a major occasion that launches the new organ for the benefit of Lincoln’s students and staff for many years to come.

Why did we decide to abandon the old Harrison and Harrison instrument, the first such organ installed in 1935? This was partly because the old organ was becoming increasingly limited in its capacity to support the work of the Chapel and the choirs. Moreover its mechanical devices, which went back nearly 80 years, were increasingly unsuitable. In the 1990s and thereafter, much difficulty was experienced by all organ scholars and choristers, and on numerous occasions it caused considerable embarrassment and much mirth in the congregation. Harrison and Harrison did their best by providing regular support, but it was becoming clear that these unexpected failures could not go on. The blower experienced many blockages and the internal arrangements of the existing organ were difficult to access readily.

Something had to be done.

Another concern was not so much the responsibility of Harrison and Harrison, but rather the marked improvement Lincoln was seeing in the quality of music and singing within the College and the Chapel. There were three key elements to this change. Firstly, for many years John Caldwell, Fellow of Jesus College, had generously supported our organ scholars, both in College & Fellows 09

matters of their chapel functions, and in their study for the BA music degree. At that time we had never included musicians beyond the organists in College life. However we decided, with the assistance of John, that at least two other music students should be fully supported along with the organists. John advised us to bring together the study of music at Jesus College with that at Lincoln College following his own retirement. Secondly, we decided after much deliberation that in future the Chapel Choir would require auditions, and that these would be open to some outside choristers. Thirdly, we hoped for the first time to award choral scholarships to students. Two of our alumni benefactors, Bob Blake (1946) and Richard Hardie (1967), generously established these scholarships. As a result these last ten years have seen a dramatic change in the quality of singing at Lincoln. Above all, our organ scholars have flourished markedly as the result of the choral arrangements. What was lacking of course was the full advantage of a suitable organ.

In 2002 we consulted a number of advisers. David Goode, at that time Organ Scholar at Christ Church, considered that the Harrison and Harrison instrument was unlikely to continue satisfactorily at the level that we expected. Nicholas Thistlethwaite, Canon of Guilford Cathedral and

historian of modern organists, strongly agreed both that the old organ should go, and that William Drake should be the builder of the new one. Sir Peter North, Principal of Jesus, told us of the opening of the 1994 organ at his college, also built by William Drake. And so we finally agreed that the new Lincoln organ would be the work of Mr Drake. His specification was offered, together with his design skilfully related to include portions of the original organ case. The contract was agreed in 2002, and the installation was finally complete in 2010. The result was very fine. William Drake’s skills and experiences are widely appreciated. The organ is a great achievement, thanks not least to our benefactors, and we shall long remember Drake for his work and his continuing involvement.

And by no means could we have set out on this musical enterprise without the support of John Caldwell, who from the outset agreed with our desire to carry music and its musicians far above Lincoln’s previous limits. He continues to be an intensely loyal former tutor and friend of Lincoln as well as Jesus. ■

Fellows news Dr Roel Dullens wins grant from the European Research Council: Congratulations to Dr Roel Dullens, Tutor in Chemistry, who was awarded a ‘starting grant’ worth €1.5m from the European Research Council (ERC). The grant will run over a period of five years and will cover work on his proposal: “Impurities in Colloidal Materials - tuning the properties of crystals, powders and glasses”.

This is a massive and prestigious grant, which will allow Roel to build up a research team of two DPhil students and two postdoctoral research assistants, and to buy new state-of-the-art equipment, in order to investigate the role of impurities on crystallisation and glass formation using colloidal model systems.

Team of Oxford mathematicians awarded large grant: Professor Dominic Joyce, Lincoln’s Senior Research Fellow in Mathematics, is leading a team at Oxford’s Institute of Mathematics that has been awarded an EPSRC (Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council) Programme Grant worth £1.8m to conduct research into fundamental algebraic and geometric structures underlying multi-dimensional phenomena. This is one of the biggest grants ever given to pure mathematics research in the UK. Dr Peter McCullough installed as Lay Canon at St Paul’s Cathedral: Dr Peter McCullough, Sohmer Fellow in English, was installed as Lay Canon (History) of St Paul’s Cathedral in November 2010. In this role, Dr Peter McCullough has special responsibility for input on historical matters. This includes the Interpretation Project – a long term project concerned with bringing St Paul’s to life for all its visitors.

Peter is a widely-published writer on the religious history of early modern England, and has also written about the early modern book trade that was centred in the churchyard at St Paul’s. He is also Head Server at St Mary Magdalen, Oxford, and has been an invited lay preacher at several Oxford and Cambridge colleges.

Professor Brian Simpson: Professor Brian Simpson, Fellow in Law at Lincoln from 1955 to 1973, sadly passed away in January 2011 at the age of 79. A memorial service was held at St Michael at the Northgate on 11 June, and many of his former students and colleagues were in attendance.

New Music tutor appointed at Lincoln: Mr Jonathan Hicks joined Lincoln College on 1 May as the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellow in Music, a new threeyear post generously funded by the Crewe Trust.

After taking a first class degree in Music from the University of Birmingham, Jonathan worked for a year in Norfolk and London in arts production and creative education. He then came to Oxford to read for the MSt in Musicology (St John’s College), followed by a DPhil (New College). He is currently completing his thesis on ‘Music and Urban Geography in Erik Satie’s Paris’. Lincoln is delighted to welcome him as its first dedicated Music tutor.

Further new fellows: Professor Neil Barclay was appointed to the EP Abraham Professorship of Chemical Pathology in the Sir William Dunn School of Pathology, with effect from 21 March 2011. Neil is also a professorial fellow of Lincoln.

Professor Anthony Green is the new Newton Abraham Visiting Professor in Medical, Biological and Chemical Sciences between 1 April and 30 September 2011. Tony is Professor of HaematoOncology and Head of the Haematology Department at Cambridge University. During his time in Oxford, he is based at the Dunn School of Pathology and is a professorial fellow of Lincoln.

Conference on 'betrayal' to be held in College: Dr Betiel Wasihun, Tutor in German Studies, has organised the upcoming interdisciplinary conference “Playing False: Representations of Betrayal” with support from Zilkha Fund. Taking place in College in mid September, this conference gathers international scholars from the fields of ancient and modern literature, film studies, and philosophy – under the sign of betrayal. Speakers will engage with the dynamics of betrayal, attending to its many dimensions, crossing politics, ethics, emotions, and aesthetics.

Fellows news Heracles to Alexander the Great: Treasures from the Royal Capital of Macedon, a Hellenic Kingdom in the Age of Democracy From April through August this year, visitors to the Ashmolean Museum were treated to a spectacular exhibition that revealed the ideology, wealth and sophistication at Aigai, the ancient capital of Macedon. It followed the development of the Macedonian ruling house, the Temenids, who traced their origin to Argos in the Peloponnese and the great hero Herakles. More than 500 finds, the majority on display for the first time, showed the trajectory of the Teminids from their pastoral, modest early lifestyle to the sophistication, military prowess and luxurious extravagance of the fourth century BC, the period of the reigns of Philip and his son Alexander the Great.

Some artifacts were found at the palace and public areas the city, but the majority were unearthed at the cemeteries of Aigai. The site was relatively unknown until the discovery of the unlooted royal tombs in the late 1970s, and the excavations since have re-written the history of Macedon and the classical period, enabling a shift away from the Athenocentric perception of classical Greece.

Dr Angeliki Kottaridi, Director of the 17th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, is the mastermind behind this exhibition and also has strong links with Lincoln College. She first presented her work to an Oxford audience at

conference organised in 2001 by Professor Bert Smith, Dr Maria Stamatopoulou and former Lincoln graduate student Dr Marina Yeroulanou (1994). Angeliki has since delivered papers on her on-going excavations at Aigai as part of the Classical Archaeology Seminars at Lincoln and New Colleges, most recently at Lincoln in 2010 as Maria’s guest. It was from these connections that the idea of the exhibition emerged.

The show has been a huge success with both the general public and with students. In June, Maria took all Lincoln CAAH students to the exhibition, and on two occasions she and Robin Lane Fox (New College) toured the show with about 90 Oxford Classics undergraduate students. Additionally, a Lincoln undergraduate is currently preparing her final year dissertation on finds from the exhibition. ■ Dr Maria Stamatopoulou is University Lecturer in Classical Art and Archaeology and Fellow of Lincoln College. She specialices in the archaeology of northern Greece and teaches the archaeology of Macedonia to graduate students. In addition to serving as a member of the Organising Committee for this exhibition, she has been asked by Angeliki Kottaridi to publish work on the terracotta figurines from her excavations, a project that will start in the near future.

by Professor Cécile Fabre, Tutorial Fellow in Philosophy On the eve of the battle of Borodino, Prince Andrei Bolkonsky, one of the main characters in War and Peace and, in that scene at least, Leo Tolstoy’s mouthpiece, describes war as follows: ‘But what is war? What is needed for success in warfare? …The aim of war is murder; the methods of war are spying, treachery, and their encouragement, the ruin of a country’s inhabitants, robbing them or stealing to provision the army, and fraud and falsehood termed military craft….[Soldiers] meet, as we shall meet tomorrow, to murder one another; they kill and maim tens of thousands, and then have thanksgiving services for having killed so many people (they even exaggerate the number) and they announce a victory, supposing that the more people they have killed the greater their achievement…’

For Tolstoy, war is about individuals maiming and killing each other. And yet, it seems that war is also irreducibly collective: it is fought by groups of people and, more often than not, for the sake of communal values such as territorial integrity and national self-determination.

The tension between the individual and the collective dimensions of war is nowhere more evident than in the ways in which the laws of war, and the moral norms which underpin those laws, treat soldiers and civilians. On the one hand, however unjust the cause for which they fight, soldiers are not to be held responsible for their participation in it, subsumed as they are under the group to which they belong – their country’s army – nor are they to be condemned for killing enemy soldiers. As Alfred Lord Tennyson famously has it in The Charge of the Light Brigade, ‘Theirs not to make reply, Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to do and die. ’By implication, as soldiers, and simply in virtue of belonging to that category, they are legitimate targets. On the other hand, soldiers may not deliberately kill innocent civilians, however just their war, and however explicitly they might be ordered to do so: for that they are clearly and unambiguously responsible. By implication, civilians are not legitimate targets, simply in virtue of being civilians, and irrespective of what they actually do for the war.

Those two questions (whether the justness or unjustness of their cause makes any difference to soldiers’ permission to kill one another, and whether civilians who take part in the war are legitimate targets) are at the heart of the revival of the philosophy of war tradition in recent years.

Some philosophers reject the laws of war as described above. In particular, they believe that

killing in war is no different from killing in domestic contexts. More precisely, they believe that whether or not individuals are liable to be killed is dependent both on what they do, as opposed to who they are, and on the moral status of their action. If Alan attempts to kill Bob at time t1 without just cause, and if perchance Bob manages momentarily to thwart him at t2 by, for example, shooting at him, we would certainly say that Alan is liable to be shot, in virtue of wrongfully attacking Bob. Moreover, we would certainly not deem it permissible for Alan to kill Bob at t3 in his

under orders against civilians. Put differently, exonerating soldiers who are safely ensconced in their barracks from the burden of reaching a judgement as to the justness of the war and of acting on that judgement, while requiring of them that they reflect on the moral status of the orders they are given in the heat of battle, seems incoherent.

And so if the horror of war resides in what it leads individuals do to each other, as Tolstoy tells us, then it must be morally appraised as the concatenation of individual acts, committed by individual agents whom it is appropriate, much more often than is standardly thought, to regard as morally responsible for what they do – be they soldiers or civilians. Tennyson had got it wrong: it is theirs to reason why. ■

own defence: Alan, we would think, ought to stop attacking Bob. Why not hold soldiers up to the same standards of morality? Why not insist, then, that soldiers who kill in pursuit of an unjust cause, such as an unwarranted aggression on another country’s territory, act wrongly? By that token, civilians who make a significant contribution to an unjust war, though they are not themselves carrying out acts of killing, might also, at least at first sight, be legitimate targets.

One cannot underestimate how profoundly revisionist that view is. Put bluntly, it implies that the acts of killing committed by German soldiers in prosecution of Germany’s wrongful aggression against Belgium and France in 1914 were akin to acts of murder. It also implies that civilian leaders who take their country into an unjust war are legitimate targets – that, for example, if the 2003 war against Iraq was indeed unjust, then Iraqi forces would not have been guilty of wrongdoing towards then-Prime Minister Blair, let alone President Bush, had they killed them.

The view that leaders or weapons manufacturers, who, respectively, authorise the war and supply troops, are liable to be killed might not prove disquieting to many. But the claim that soldiers ought not to participate in an unjust war, and that their acts of killing, if they do participate, are wrongful in virtue of the unjustness of the war, has elicited considerable criticism from many.

Soldiers, it is often said, are not capable of discerning whether the war which they are ordered to wage is a just war – indeed, they ought not to be expected to engage in such a reflective process – and it is unfair, therefore, to hold them responsible for their participation in it.

And yet, this objection seems to prove too much for it is thereby committed not to hold soldiers responsible for wrongful acts of killing committed 14 College & Fellows

The King James Bible – a Lincoln connection

by Dr Peter McCullough, Tutorial Fellow in English Literature It has been difficult since January to escape notice that 2011 is the 400th anniversary of the publication of the Authorised (‘King James’) Version of the Bible. Less well known to Lincolnites, perhaps, was the significant role played in the translation work by the Rector of the day, Richard Kilby. Kilby’s Lincoln career began with a Darby Fellowship in 1578, and he served as Rector from 1590 until 1620. He was also Regius Professor of Hebrew from 1610 until his death. His rectorship was marred by decades of in-fighting with the Fellowship, which unfortunately dominates what little we know of him. But his appointment to the Hebrew professorship, and his manuscript works, all in Hebrew and on deposit in the Bodleian, are testament to the fact that he was one of the leading biblical scholars of his generation. It was this reputation which no doubt prompted bishop of London Richard Bancroft to appoint him to the Oxford translation committee responsible for both the major and minor prophets of the Old Testament (Isaiah through Malachi) in the 1611 Authorised Version. Chaired by the august theologian and head of Corpus, John Rainolds, the committee met in Rainolds’s rooms and included Miles Smith, the later bishop of Gloucester who wrote the muchadmired preface to the new Bible.

Kilby was in life and at his death a generous benefactor to the College Library, and his legacies fortunately survive. We have always known from a now-lost benefactors book that it was Kilby who gave the College all eight volumes of the magnificent ‘Antwerp Polyglot’ – perhaps the most beautiful piece of printing of the Northern Renaissance, issued under the patronage of King Philip II of Spain from the Antwerp house of Christopher Plantin, who had type specially cast for all of the books’ four languages (Latin, Greek, Hebrew, and Aramaic). The Antwerp Polyglot was one of the most important sources for the translators of the new English Bible.

So, it is extremely exciting in this anniversary year of the ‘King James Bible‘ to see on the flyleaf of the first volume of the Lincoln copy not just Kilby’s cipher (‘RK’), but also the date on which he acquired it – August 1604. Bishop Bancroft had circulated King James’s instructions to the translators in July of that year. So we hold in the Senior Library a precious piece of evidence of our own Lincoln translator promptly securing of a vital source book hardly before the ink was dry on his commission.

This led me to wonder about another of the College’s Bible treasures – the Antwerp Polyglot’s ancestor, the six-volume ‘Complutensian Polyglot’ (1514-20, printed at Alcala, or ‘Complutus’ in Latin), the world’s first multi-lingual Bible printed with each version in parallel columns for comparison.

Only 500 copies were printed. Not only do we hold a complete set, but Dr Joanna Weinberg (of Exeter College and the Oriental Studies Institute, now working on Kilby’s Hebrew scholarship), has identified Kilby’s annotating hand in its pages. Very likely, Kilby acquired Complutensian, as well as the Antwerp, for his translation work on the Authorised Version, too. These two polyglot Bibles hold exalted places in both the history of printing and the history of biblical and linguistic scholarship. And the new interest that we can now attach to them due to their use by Kilby is a reminder of just how important it is to preserve and protect historic collections. They may lie unused for generations, but new generations of scholars ask new questions of ancient holdings, and the passage of time and marking of anniversaries like the King James Bible's 400th prompts new interest among the wider public. And then these old volumes quietly, and in a touching way that I somehow think of as gracious, yield new ways of understanding and appreciating them. The same can be said of people from the past. We should all take a new pride in Rector Kilby, in the famous English Bible to which he contributed, and in his books of which we are the honoured custodians. ■

HealthTIES:

a blueprint for health innovation and economic success

by Professor Bass Hassan, TO Ogunlesi Senior Research Fellow in Medical Sciences As a disease (cancer) researcher and physician, never have the opportunities and challenges for the improvement of human health been as great as they are now. You probably are aware that for the first time ever, the average human life expectancy from birth in the developed world has reached 80 years. For man, this is a landmark in our multi-million year evolution, and can be simply attributed to the combined impact of political stability, wealth, therapeutic drugs, public health and associated technologies.

Can the further development of medicine, with better diet, genomics, new drugs, new vaccines and new surgical interventions, lead to a still greater life expectancy? Is it not the case that the European societies that seeded capitalism have also been the engine houses of better health?

With this success a number of significant challenges are emerging. Our health services are now faced with acute problems, not least is dealing with the degeneration of the living system with age, exemplified in the overwhelming care requirements for our elderly and the increased cancer incidence. There are also deep seated political concerns with respect to the diminishing scale of the UK and European economies and their ability to sustain expanding and dependent populations.

It is evident that as life expectancy and cultural development in other nations catches up rapidly with our own, so does the magnitude of our challenge. These factors are not inseparable, and are closely linked, as the health of society mirrors its wealth. Take Oxford as an example. The healthcare economy of our hospitals and University is close to £1bn per year. Most of this is public funding, together with charitable and private donation, but with relatively little commercial involvement. We have a fairly good idea where the money goes, but where, other than from taxes on income and industry profits, does this money come from?

One major industry in Oxfordshire concerns small and medium sized health technology companies that occupy some of the biggest science parks in Europe, for example in Milton Park. The reality in 16 College & Fellows

the forever-changing economic climate is that this type of independent public–private ecosystem is probably not sustainable in its current form. Our economy is becoming largely dependent on knowledge, and so we are in effect living in the ‘knowledge revolution’. Centre stage in this currency sit world-leading universities like Oxford.

We would all agree that Oxford’s responsibility and business is to further knowledge, transfer knowledge, and ultimately let others sell this knowledge. The latter poses the most difficulty as we wonder how close should the current public domain basis of Oxford engage in profit generating activity? How far do we go with public–private cooperation? Would we ever imagine a venture capitalist running a hospital or this University? Some feel applied and commercial activity sits uncomfortably with blue sky thinking in Oxford and elsewhere, perhaps because it is distasteful in that might undermine the genuine need for unfettered thought.

So what are the potential solutions? One is to minimise the disclosure of the commercialisation of knowledge. In effect accept that it is an activity

that goes on to a degree in the background but never is so prominent that we are uncomfortable with its extent. Perhaps it is actually already much larger in scale than at first appears, with the University having to increasingly negotiate forward intellectual property assets in exchange for major capital investment. Is this commercialisation through the back door good for Oxford and our health community? Opinions are probably divided, but the fact is that a large number of our graduates enter the commercial and financial health sectors, and so we are already entwined. An alternative and pragmatic approach to the public–private issue, and one that I personally prefer, is to openly confront some of the main questions. How can publicly funded knowledge generation and innovation contribute more efficiently to national wealth creation? A number of regions in Europe have shared in the realisation that some of these issues now require some work.

HealthTIES is a Regions of Knowledge initiative by the EU, and like many of the EU’s best intentions, is liable to join the numerous other ‘good idea at

HealthTIES itself will not seek to directly address our main health challenges, but aims to empower the best brains and talent in an environment to ensure Europe and this region are protected in order that they continue to deliver major healthcare and economic developments to our populations.

the time’ plans. However, HealthTIES is no amateur endeavour, as it includes leading regions of Europe where serious investment is more likely to reap dividends for the European economy. The partners are Zurich, Barcelona, the Medical Delta region of Holland (Leiden, Delft, Rotterdam), eastern Hungary and Oxford (Thames Valley).

What sets HealthTIES apart is the timing of its inception with respect to the current economic and political context. All regions of Europe are dealing with similar major health issues and are all wondering how they can compete with knowledge economies in Boston and Beijing. The practical goal of HealthTIES is to establish a joint action plan for major investment that aims to accelerate innovation between the health technology companies (biotech), health services and university research clusters in what is termed the ‘triple helix’. In many ways an investment driven cultural change will draw change, not only for academics, but from those that run the health services and biotechnology companies.

The agenda faces Brussels, nation states, and major private investment, in an attempt to ensure that medical innovations and technologies are efficiently and competitively driven in an environment of co-operation and opportunity, from idea to product to patient. Simply put, this means channelling large-scale investment to these mature regions that have both the track records and infrastructure in order to make them work like they have never done before. HealthTIES itself will not seek to directly address our main health challenges, but aims to empower the best brains and talent in an environment to ensure Europe and this region are protected in order that they continue to deliver major healthcare and economic developments to our populations.

It will be difficult to predict what will change, except that change is inevitable and that, as always, the most talented individuals will drive it. One of those people is Professor Pancras Hogendoorn from Leiden, the leader of HealthTIES, and Visiting Professor of Pathology. ■

Student news VacProj turns 40: This year VacProj celebrates 40 years since it was established in 1971. VacProj is a charity run

by Lincoln students, who take a group of children on holiday each year during the Long Vacation. The VacProj Committee liaises with Oxfordshire social services to identify children from disadvantaged backgrounds, who will particularly benefit from the scheme. This summer the group will be travelling to Dalesdown, West Sussex for an activity-packed week.

VacProj’s 40th anniversary will be marked by a dinner in College on Saturday 17 September. If you would like further details, please contact the Development Office to be put in touch with the organisers.

Huw David (2007) reports: “In August 2011, Lincoln’s EPA centre on Museum Road will host the university’s UNIQ history access week, giving 40 sixth-formers from around the UK a taste of studying history at Oxford. Student participants will hear lectures from different Oxford academics on four topics: the Home Front in Britain in World War Two, the Russian Revolution, the English Reformation, and slavery in the United States. These will be followed by discussion groups facilitated by graduate students, with afternoons spent working on an essay on one of the subjects. The week culminates with tutorials to discuss the students’ essays, while a range of social activities during the evenings provides participants with a sample of Oxford’s many extra-curricular options.

“UNIQ is one of the University’s flagship access and outreach programmes, designed to encourage talented students from underprivileged backgrounds to apply to Oxford. This year, some 650 sixth-formers are taking part in courses ranging from biochemistry to Egyptology and running over five weeks in July and August.

Participants have been selected on the basis of outstanding GCSE grades and come from schools without a history of sending students to Oxbridge.

“Last year nearly half of all students on the UNIQ history course went on to make successful applications to Oxford.

Among the positive feedback received, one student commented that “I was ambitious beforehand, but this week has only reinforced my belief that Oxford is definitely accessible to state school students.” Another reported that “it has encouraged me to apply, and has been very inspiring and enjoyable. I feel fortunate, privileged and grateful to have had the opportunity.”

James Flewellen (2008) was the 2010-11 Captain and President of the Oxford University Blind Tasting Society, a society that educates students in the art and science of tasting and identifying wine. The end goal is to be able to identify the wine in terms of the grape

variety, vintage, and region of origin.

Other than the educational aspect, the main focus of the Society is competing in international blind tasting competitions.

James captained the Oxford team against Cambridge in a Varsity tasting match in Hilary term. Oxford sadly lost to Cambridge, although James received the honour of a prize for the highest individual score, and a write-up in The Financial Times by noted UK wine critic, and judge of the competition, Jancis Robinson. Oxford did get its revenge however, when James led an Oxford team to victory in the Sciences Po International Tasting Competition, hosted in Champagne by Maison Bollinger over the Easter break. Over seven gruelling rounds, Oxford outscored 13 other teams from France, Switzerland, Italy and the UK (including Cambridge!) to come first.

Hannah Grace, Tom Hale, Kathy Keown and Oliver Russell (all 2008) were part of a group that met with the Archbishop of Canterbury, The Most Revd Dr Rowan Williams, in May, as part of his visit to the Bodleian Library’s exhibition, Manifold Greatness: Oxford and the Making of the King James Bible. The students and the Archbishop held a lively discussion on the ongoing significance of the King James Bible.

Lucy Hancock (2010) informs us that: “Richard Keen (2010) has taken his first steps towards super-stardom by winning an Oxscar (geddit?) in Hilary Term with his animation, The Snowman, which was also featured in the 2011 Turl Street Arts Festival.

Featuring Herman and Harold, who Richard describes as ‘a green alien with a taste for mischief that likes eating things, and his human owner’, The Snowman represents the culmination of two years’ work. This is the first award that Richard has won with his creations, but he is hoping to take them on to bigger and better things: ‘I’m currently working on more home grown antics, but I’m really keen to take them out into the wilder, wackier world.’ If you can’t wait till then, they’ve just got their own YouTube channel, so search ‘Herman and Harold’ to check them out!”

Hana Tsuruhara (2009) won the Felicity Brown Award, which allowed her to travel to Ecuador to work with MEDLIFE (Medicine, Education and Development to Low Income Families Everywhere), an organisation that sends groups of medical students across South America to assist with the setting up of mobile clinics in isolated areas.

Ruvi Ziegler (2008) co-organised a series of lectures, workshops and conferences entitled ‘Israel: Historical, Political and Social Aspects’. One of the lectures, ‘Israel and Palestine: is it too late for the Two States solution?’, given by Professor Benny Morris, took place in the Lower Lecture Room at Lincoln in May.

The following students received Lincoln College Travel Grants in order to assist with educational trips abroad during the summer of 2010.

Hannah Booker (2009) travelled to Japan during the summer of 2010 to attend a nanoscience summer school at the University of Tokyo. The course was part of an exchange scheme run by the International Alliance of Research Universities.

Emma Hall (2009) spent August 2010 in Bolivia working for the English language magazine, The Bolivian Express. The publication was established by Oxford alumni in Bolivia, along with locals from the city of La Paz.

Celine Marraffa (2009) spent the summer in Berlin. She worked as a volunteer at the Russian House of Berlin, supervising a group of Russian children living in the city and thus practising both Russian and German speaking at once!

Louise Moss (2009) travelled to Kenya during the summer of 2010 with Kenya Education Partnerships (KEP), a studentrun charity that gives Oxbridge and UCL students the opportunity to make a sustainable impact on secondary schools in rural Kenya, primarily through investment in essential resources.

James Roscoe (2009) travelled to Milan for a work experience placement with CB Richard Ellis, an international property investment company. He spent three weeks working with the valuation team, translating documents, visiting property sights, and attending negotiation meetings.

James Wells (2008) spent the summer of 2010 in Jordan on an internship placement with Umniah, a mobile phone company based in Amman, the country’s capital.

JCR President’s report 2010-11 The JCR has once again moved from strength to strength during the 2010-11 academic year.

Beginning with a diverse and exciting Freshers’ Week, the year’s social calendar overflowed with an assortment of entertainment events led by the powerfully efficient “Queen of Fun”, Entz Chair, Louise Moss (2009). Bop themes ranged from “The Zoo” to “I Can’t Believe You’re Wearing That,” and activities including wine tasting and Grove barbeques were enthusiastically received. A particular highlight was “Oxmas”, which featured a packed weekend including the JCR Christmas dinner, a pantomime, a visit from Santa during formal hall, and a pub walk to the Perch. Deep Hall remains an integral part of the Lincoln social scene, serving as the first stop in a big night out, a cheeky break from the Library, or anything in between.

As Sports Rep Guy “Guido” Edwards (2009) routinely reminded us, Lincoln is awesome at all sports. Highlights included W1 winning blades in Torpids, W2 and W3 winning blades in Summer VIIIs, the cricket team making it to the semi-finals of Cuppers, the hockey team securing promotion to the top division, and men’s football making it two promotions in a row by reaching the second tier.

Trinity Term marked a significant milestone for Lincoln’s growing contingent of University athletes, as the JCR increased its own contribution and secured additional College support for the “Blues Fund”, boosting six-fold the financial support for University-level sportsmen and women.

Looking ahead to next year, the newly-elected Ball Committee, chaired by Dennis Egger, is already hard at work on a “Phantom of the Opera”-themed ball that will be surely be one to remember.

Arts and cultural societies continue to flourish in the JCR. The Lincoln Players look to be in good hands for the future, with an all-fresher cast delighting audiences with their performance of Black Comedy. The Lincoln Film Society has branched out into genres as diverse as short, lighthearted documentaries about pigeonhole post, and claymation, with Richard Keen’s “Herman and Harold” film (YouTube it!) winning the “Oxscar” for “Best Film” at the Oxford Film Foundation Festival.

The Turl Street Arts Festival continues to expand; one particularly memorable addition this year was an a cappella group, which brought much glee to listeners.

I am consistently inspired by how JCR members manage to maintain academic excellence while giving so significantly of their time in a number of extra-curricular activities. The JCR has supported various fine charities this year, with Lincoln’s own charity, the Vacation Project, deserving particular mention. In VacProj’s 40th year, this summer’s trip promises to be one of the best holidays yet, with 22 student leaders accompanying 36 local kids on a week-long holiday to Dalesdown in West Sussex. Looking ahead to next year, the newly-elected Ball Committee, chaired by Dennis Egger, is already hard at work on a “Phantom of the Opera”themed ball that will surely be one to remember.

Perhaps most impressive, Lincoln continues to show itself to be highly deserving of its reputation as a close-knit and inclusive community. This is surely in part due to the outstanding work of the Welfare Officer, Rhea Newman (2009), and her team of Peer Supporters, who ensure that support is always close at hand, as well as the Access and Academic Affairs Officers, Hannah Grace (2008) and Hannah Booker (2009), and their team of interview and open day helpers, who make sure that prospective students see Lincoln for the truly wonderful place it is.

It has been a very great honour to serve as JCR President this year; I have been constantly reminded of what a privilege it is to live and study amongst such talented and motivated individuals.

Whether you have been away only a short time or several years, I would encourage you to visit Lincoln again soon. In the meantime, I can promise that current members are making sure that College is as vibrant a place as ever. ■ Kevin Smith (2009) JCR President 2010-11

MCR President’s report 2010-11 The history of Lincoln’s MCR is one filled with superlatives, and this year has been no exception.

The number of graduate students has again increased, with people from all over the world joining the ranks, making it by far the largest MCR of any undergraduate college. The MCR Committee has worked hard to integrate these newcomers and maintain our MCR as one of the most diverse and socialable in Oxford.

The Social Team (Sophia Kerridge (2009), Oliver Harrison (2009), Felicity Cowdrey (2009), Amy Baxter (2009) and Sarah Walter (2009)) had the formidable job of organising the extremely busy termcard for the community - each term overflowing with activities, parties and dinners. A wonderful Garden Party with a visit from the Rector, who generously offers us his garden once a year, followed by the Leavers’ Dinner with an eloquent speech from former MCR President Christine Simpson, capped a fantastic Trinity Term. The new academic year began with an intense and very successful Freshers’ Week, where new and current MCR members mingled at various events starting with a quiz in Deep Hall and ending with a wonderful cocktail party.

The high level of attendance at events was unprecedented, with each event heavily oversubscribed. This led to the largest Christmas Dinner in MCR history, with over half the MCR (170 people) enjoying a wonderful evening of fine food, carol singing and mulled wine. As much as the Committee can organise and aid, it is the eagerness and energy of the MCR members themselves that has provided for such amazing events and vibrant atmosphere.

Beyond the fun and games, the Secretary, AnneClaire Michoux (2003) (later Hugh Reid (2009) and Amy Baxter (2009)) organised some fascinating Lord Florey talks. Kat Turvey (2009) added a touch of class with her talk about Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiparelli and her relationship with the surrealist movement; Dan Pascoe (2008) introduced us to death penalty and clemency practices in southeast Asia; and Felicity Cowdrey (2009) helped us better understand anorexia nervosa. At Conversazione, Xavier Droux (2007) also gave us a very interesting insight into the status of Hippos in ancient Egypt.

As much as the Committee can organise and aid, it is the eagerness and energy of the MCR members themselves that has provided for such amazing events and vibrant atmosphere.

MCR members have again enjoyed heavy involvement in all manner of sporting activities, with Blues representation in sports from Cricket to Shooting. Nicole Scheumann (2007) has done a fantastic job as Captain of the Boat Club, helping attract heavy involvement of graduate members, as well as finding time to row for the Blues woman’s boat at Henley. The recent creation of a MCR Blues fund will help ensure that Lincoln graduates are able to participate in Blues sport.

On top of those whom I have already mentioned, the rest of the Committee have worked extremely hard to make the MCR and Lincoln a better place.

Working together with the College, the JCR and the Treasurer, Asgeir Birkisson (2008), we brought several improvements to Deep Hall, drastically increasing its use, among graduate members.

Welfare Officers Mark Petersen (2009) and Marlena Whiting (2006) helped keep us all sane, as well as organising a host of welfare activities from welfare teas to yoga to self-defence classes. Green Reps Richard Passmore (2008), Penny Sarchet (2008) and Liz Fouksman (2010) worked brilliantly with the Domestic Bursar, Rachel Buxton, on the newly reformed Sustainability Committee, helping to bring fresh recycling and environmental ideas to the MCR and the College. Tim Green (2010) and Varun Ramraj (2010) have done a great job as IT Reps, completely redesigning the dated MCR website. And Latoya Flewellen (2008) organised several successful charity events. I thank all of them on behalf of the entire MCR for their dedication and hard work.

It is a year that has served to remind us that we are part of a truly special community at Lincoln and its MCR. I am sure that the camaraderie and bonds formed will be remembered by each member long after their time here. ■ Jian Dong (2008) MCR President 2010-11 Students 21 21

A week in Tokyo

with the Lincoln Chapel Choir

Lincoln College Chapel Choir prides itself not only on its excellent music, but also on its renowned social life. It is always a particular pleasure to travel together on tour, and to share with diverse groups precisely these assets. In September 2010, the Choir was honoured to travel to Tokyo, where it was generously hosted by Aoyama Gakuin University, with which Lincoln enjoys a close bond. The tour would not have been possible without the tireless efforts of the Revd Dr Paul Shew of Aoyama Gakuin, who ensured that our visit was successful, comfortable, and immensely enjoyable, and who managed our tour with efficiency and professionalism.

Considering that the tour lasted just under a week, it is remarkable how much was achieved. The night before we flew the Choir gave a concert in St Augustine’s Church, Kilburn, with which one member of the choir is affiliated. Spending an afternoon of rehearsal together was gratifying not least for the church’s marvellous acoustic. Arriving into Narita airport in the late evening of Saturday 25 September, we made our way to our comfortable hotel, and then ventured out into the fashion district of Tokyo for a bite to eat before a much-needed night’s sleep in anticipation of our first engagement.

Revitalised by a sumptuous hotel breakfast, we met our chaperones (students from the Aoyama Gakuin) and travelled to the Honda Memorial Church, where we led a choral service of morning worship, followed by a brief concert. We felt incredibly touched by the generosity of the church, which provided for us a delicious lunch of sushi. We were thanked

by the church’s oldest member, who expressed his utter delight at hearing our singing. A good number of us came away having made new friends with whom we remain in touch.

After marvelling at the beautiful Meiji shrine and exploring Tokyo’s shopping districts, we returned, as a group, to Shibuya station, where we met families of Aoyama Gakuin University students, with whom we were to stay for one night. For many of us, this was the most unforgettable part of the tour. Travelling to diverse regions of the capital (for some, this entailed a two-hour commute), we were able to remove ourselves from the noise of the centre and experience Japanese suburbia. Convening again the next morning, every member of the choir returned with tales of huge meals, warm hospitality, and even more new friends. We were honoured to be accepted as guests into beautiful homes and loving families.

Refreshed, we turned our minds to our concert in Meiji Gakuin University on Monday evening. Upon our arrival to the impressive University Chapel, Will Thomas (Senior Organ Scholar, 2009-10) and I had to navigate the imposing Rieger organ (for those interested, there are some videos of the instrument on YouTube). We were ably assisted by the excellent Chapel Organist, Miho Hasegawa, who played a number of items in the concert to follow. Our concert was jointly given with Meiji Gakuin University Choir, which fell under the enthusiastic directorship of Professor Ryuichi Higuchi.

We were delighted to be introduced to some Japanese choral music, following our own repertoire of European choral classics in the first half of the concert; it was also a pleasure to join forces with the University Choir for a rousing performance of Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. It was gratifying to see how well we were received by the sizeable audience, and to be so generously hosted in a reception of fine food and champagne after the concert. The University Choir thought it fitting that we ought to ‘sing (again) for our supper’, and therefore gave something of an encore to a delighted audience of more intimate proportions.

Tokyo is, of course, famous for having given karaoke to the world. Could there be a better group than an Oxford chapel choir to take the karaoke scene by storm?

Possibly. Nevertheless, a few of us gave it a go, and it was tremendous fun. We were joined by some students of Aoyama Gakuin University, who very kindly acted as chaperones for the week, taking us to the most famous tourist attractions, and the best bars and restaurants.

On Tuesday morning, we were up early, ready to sing in Aoyama Gakuin Junior School’s morning assembly. We sang to a massive auditorium of school students, before they returned, with remarkable speed, to their classrooms. Dr Shew subsequently led us to our evening concert venue, the University Chapel, where we left our bags before another action-packed day of sight-seeing. Our 6pm concert was, as we had come to expect, very well attended.

We were honoured to be joined by the British Ambassador to Japan, as well as many esteemed figures of the University, who had also greeted the Rector upon his visit to Aoyama Gakuin in 2009. It was

fitting that we should conclude our concert with music by Samuel Sebastian Wesley, a relation of John Wesley’s; his rousing setting of ‘Blessed be the God and Father’ drew to a close a programme ranging from Orlando Gibbons to David Cooper (1949-2008), Organ Scholar of Lincoln, 1967-70. Our work was not yet done for the evening, however.

Immediately following the concert, we joined Aoyama Gakuin University Choir to lead evening worship. Once again, we were given a generous reception of excellent food and drink, and it was a pleasure to converse with so many senior members of Aoyama Gakuin, who share a strong connection with Lincoln.

For the last time, we turned our minds to karaoke as a means of celebrating a hugely successful day. The next morning, a two-hour commute to the International Christian University led us to our final engagement. The Choir gave a concert to mark the opening of the impressive new university canteen – the bustling and fully operational hall provided a somewhat different atmosphere to that of the previous night. It is remarkable just how small the world can seem, having

travelled for nearly 20 hours to a country, when meeting so many people who share a connection with Lincoln.

To conclude such a thrilling tour, we made the best of our final day in Tokyo (although one or two choir members got lost on the metro) before a long flight home. We had a number of goodbyes to say at the airport, as some choir members would not return in Michaelmas Term, having finished their courses. There could not have been a better way to celebrate years of friendship, made possible by the weekly commitment of singing together, than to spend a week in one of the world’s most remarkable cities.

Spring tour to Devon The Choir toured to South Devon at the beginning of April 2011. The tour was made possible, in part, by the JCR, MCR, and Old Members’ Fund. We kicked off with a concert of sacred music in the beautiful Buckfast Abbey. We greatly appreciated the turnout of Lincoln alumni and current members. The music ranged from the 16th century to the modern day, including pieces

by Byrd, Tallis, Parry, Rachmaninov, Poulenc and Stanford. The magnificent acoustic of the Abbey really enhanced our singing, as we were able to perform beneath its tower.

The audience was very responsive, with such positive comments as “a real treat expressed with emotion.”The local landlord was also very welcoming, on the condition that we would sing to him on our next visit!

The next morning we explored the coast path and beaches around the picturesque

village of Thurlestone, and played a highly competitive game of rounders. Most of us had a paddle in the sea, while one brave choir member went for a very brief swim.

Our evening concert in the village hall, warmed by the sunburn we picked up earlier, was to a packed house. In addition to a selection of our sacred repertoire, we performed a number of secular pieces of French chansons, English madrigals and partsongs by Dowland, Morley and Finzi, and 20th century standards such as “Ain’t Misbehavin’”. Our deepest thanks go to the wonderful host families who were so welcoming. We bade a fond farewell to Thurlestone, well-rested and well-fed.

We sang Sunday morning mass to a large congregation, followed by the first ever Choral Evensong service at Buckfast Abbey.

We were lucky enough to use the Abbey’s fine organ and sang music by Dyson, Byrd

and Palestrina. Our stay at Buckfast Abbey was very enjoyable and we are particularly grateful to the Abbot for all of his support and to Brother Stephen who hosted us so warmly.

Our performances over, we spent the last day of the tour exploring the wonderful scenery of Dartmoor. After a short drive through wooded glades, past thatched cottages and babbling brooks, we were able to hone our tor-climbing skills and tackle a pub lunch. A day in the fresh air was just what we needed after a great deal of singing in a few days and we were all bowled over by the beautiful views from the top of the tors. Blades of glory

The past couple of years have been truly fantastic for Lincoln College Boat Club. Following the boat house’s renovation in 2009, complete with the addition of eight new state-of-the-art rowing machines, the Boat Club was placed on a newly secure footing for the coming year in terms of land training, atmosphere and facilities.

rowing in their division. All in all, this proved a very successful week of racing and encouraged strong Lincoln support at the Henley Boat Races.

At Henley, four Lincoln rowers and coaches raced victoriously against Cambridge in both the Oxford Women’s Crew and Men’s Lightweight Crew.

The first opportunity to capitalise on these developments came with the attraction of new Freshers and the run up to the Christ Church Regatta, Oxford’s annual novice race and the highlight of Michaelmas Term. Lincoln entered four boats of keen Freshers in 2010, with all proceeding through the first round of the competition. In particular, Lincoln’s top women’s boat reached the semifinal, which put Lincoln women amongst the top four out of 36 college boat clubs. All crews showed considerable enthusiasm and potential, boding well for the involvement of novices in the College’s senior crews going into Hilary Term.

Building on the success of Torpids, the Club led a large training camp to Banyoles Lake, site of the 1992 Barcelona Olympic rowing events in northern Spain, during the Easter vacation.

Banyoles offered ideal training conditions in terms of facilities, climate and atmosphere. This year’s training camp was, with 25 rowers and two coxes, Lincoln’s biggest yet. It was the generous sponsorship of international law firm Morrison & Foerster LLP (MoFo) which enabled us to be very inclusive and gave keen people from all levels the chance to participate and advance. Importantly, the camp experience greatly supported the building of a strong team spirit in the Boat Club.

After uncharacteristically good river and weather conditions over the course of Hilary, Lincoln had a strong training foundation for Torpids, a four day “bumps race” at the end of term. During bump racing, crews start a certain distance away from each other with the aim to catch the boat in front (bumping) while not being caught by the boat behind (being bumped). Lincoln qualified five boats and led the overall bump chart of all colleges with 16 bumps. The first women’s boat won “blades” for the first time in 15 years (blades are a trophy for bumping on all four days without being bumped), and the second men’s and the second women’s boats narrowly missed out on blades only after safety klaxons stopped the 24 Students

The annual climax for Oxford college rowing is yet another bumping race, Summer Eights. Lincoln was able to qualify seven boats, which is its highest number of boats since 1985 and included the first ever fourth women’s boat at Lincoln, as well the involvement of three successful, returning University rowers. LCBC showed an excellent overall performance with eight net bumps and the second and third women’s eights winning blades. The women’s first eight, racing in their brand new, Lincoln-coloured Salani boat, unluckily missed out on the chance to gain crossed blades, the feat of achieving blades at both Torpids and Summer Eights, again due to klaxon. The men’s first eight was also able to produce a series of respectable performances despite equipment troubles, gaining ground in their division and finishing fourth in Division Two. Overall, this year was very noteworthy and, in particular, was the most successful year in the 32-year history of women’s rowing at Lincoln, surpassing even last year’s successes which were record breaking in themselves.

The year’s successes, however, would not have been possible without vital support in a few key areas.

We would like to pay tribute to the invaluable support, advice and monetary contributions of the Boat Club Society (the organisation of alumni rowers), which have been instrumental in maintaining the competitive standard of Lincoln equipment. Similarly, the contributions of the Blockley family and alumni to an award for University level rowers has helped to promote rowing excellence in the Club. Finally, our sponsor Morrison & Foerster LLP has been a crucial component in the Club’s current growth and success through their financial support.

All in all, it has been a year of growth, hard work, enjoyment and success for the Boat Club. Lincoln has become strong, fun, inclusive and feared (by other colleges) on the Isis and we very much hope to continue this positive trend. ■

Student sports: 2010-11 round-up Football After last year’s victory in the Cuppers final, the first time that Lincoln have won the trophy in 20 years, LCFC had much to live up to in the 2010-11 season. Having lost six members of the starting Cupperswinning team at the end of last year, including two Blues, this was inevitably going to be difficult; an early defeat to Balliol in the first round of Cuppers highlighted that the world of college football can be tough. Yet despite losing several big names to injury early in the season, the new Fresher recruits soon began to reveal their worth, and the team has grown remarkably as the season has progressed. Consistently strong performances from next year’s captain ‘Big Sam’ Townsend (2010) and development squad striker Nathan Riddell (2010) gave Lincoln a new edge in attack and stability in defence.

The Super Cuppers final in February at the Iffley Road stadium – an annual fixture between the winners of the Oxford and Cambridge Cuppers competitions – was an undoubted highlight of the season. Although Trinity College, Cambridge ultimately came out victorious, taking a college of their size to extra time was a remarkable achievement. Trinity, sitting top of the Cambridge JCR Premier Division, were unbeaten since October 2009 and had conceded just three goals all season; although their superior fitness ultimately showed through, this was a performance in front of a large home Lincoln crowd of which every player can feel truly proud.

Perhaps just as remarkable was LCFC’s victory over Somerville in March, which saw the team come back to win from 3-0 behind, with just 18 minutes left on the clock and nine men on the pitch. This was typical of the enthusiasm, spirit and resilience that carried the team to the top of their League, winning them promotion for the second consecutive year. Back to back promotions mean Lincoln has risen rapidly into the JCR First Division, a league which will undoubtedly bring new challenges as well as the enticing

prospect of fixtures against Brasenose after their recent relegation. In every respect this was a fantastic season for Lincoln College Football Club.

Netball Lincoln College Netball Club has had a successful season with both the A and B teams winning the majority of their matches. The club was invigorated with an influx of Freshers this year whose commitment to the Club should stand us in good stead for the years to come. The A team showed good form competing in the top league and, in true Lincoln form, managed to hold its own against a dominant Worcester. Unfortunately the end of the year means the loss of players.

The A team will lose their ex-Blues player Emma Hall (2007) and Sam Hodson (2007). Both girls have served four years of Lincoln netball and will be sorely missed.

We wish them the best of luck.

Rugby Overall, LCRFC enjoyed a successful 2010-11 season, with a strong league performance and Cuppers run just reward for a small yet talented squad.

Star players included Anthony Geraghty (2007), Oli Russel (2008) and player of the season Jamie Close (2009). The campaign started strongly with victories over Queen’s, Merton/Mansfield and Hertford, marred only slightly by a loss to Corpus/Somerville. Key to Lincoln’s success was the hard work and enthusiasm of all squad members, epitomised by Chung-Wei Chiu (2010).

The B team captained by Sarah Moore (2009) has also been successful. The enthusiasm and sheer determination of the players has meant they have really held their own in their league. Special mention must go to Kevin Smith (2008), named ‘lady of the match’ in so many matches we have lost count. To say the B team will be sad to lose Kevin is an understatement. Although Nathan Riddell (2010) is keen to fill Kevin’s spot, we don’t feel any mere mortal could match the enthusiasm and grace Smith has shown on the court. Good luck with law, and don’t stop playing the beautiful game!

Our good run continued well into Hilary Term, thanks largely to finalists such as Stuart Morten (2008) retaining a desire to play despite the impending threat of exams. With the team remaining at full strength, LCRFC were able to grind out victories against Balliol and Jesus, the latter game being a rather scrappy and much closer affair than necessary, though solid work from Lincoln stalwart James Tilney (2007) helped steady the ship, the centre getting a deserved try.

Sadly, a narrow loss to Merton/ Mansfield denied us promotion to League Two. Cuppers saw Lincoln play some of their best rugby of the season, demolishing Queen’s with help from a hat-trick from Simon Millar (2007). Sadly, LCRFC were to fall short in the quarterfinals to Teddy Hall. Despite a gutsy performance and an early lead following a stunning try from captain Murdo Armstrong (2009), the League One side’s superior conditioning and class eventually told.

All in all the Netball Club has had a year to be proud of. Although Cuppers had a disappointing result, we have high hopes for mixed Cuppers in Trinity Term. As a Club, we would like to thank Rhea, Amy and Sarah for their excellent captaincy; we hope to continue their great leadership and see an even more successful season in 2011-12.

The side went into Sevens Cuppers with only a squad of eight. Despite this, the team comfortably won their first two games and were unlucky to lose in the quarter final due to two early interceptions. Gibbs around Britain Lincoln finalist Will Gibbs (2008) shares his plans to spend the summer sailing round the entire coastline of Great Britain in order to raise money for International Alert, an independent peace-building charity.

All challenges are difficult to start. Sailing around Britain isn’t any different. The plan is simple; starting from Aldeburgh in Suffolk on the east coast of England, sailing round the Firth of Forth, the Inner Hebrides, Lands End, the Straits of Dover and back to Aldeburgh again. Omitting any stops, this voyage measures just shy of 2,000 nautical miles. To put this into perspective, crossing the Atlantic from the Canaries to Barbados hovers around the 2,400 mark. However, unlike a transatlantic voyage there are far more dangers, or as I like to think of them, sites of interest. These range from offshore oil rigs, raging tidal streams, unwelcoming rocks and the local population of the Isle of Wight.

Like many ambitious plans, ours was hatched in a pub, over a pint, and was followed by a significant headache and a wounded bank balance. From its

conception, the project has consumed every last post-it note I can muster, and now I sit consulting more lists than I thought it possible to generate. Our preparations started just over a year ago when we chose the model of the boat we should use for such a trip, the requisite onboard equipment, and identified the skills we must quickly become familiar with. I will not be alone as I will be kept in check by my co-skipper Tom Samuel, a Classicist from Brasenose on our 24-foot Folk Boat.

To date we have added self-steering gear, overhauled the safety equipment, updated the on-board navigational provision, and completed a range of very important but less glamorous tasks such as painting the names on 132 cans of food to avoid the labels washing off along with their identity. Such a project requires one to be innovative in ways I couldn’t have

anticipated. The question of how to avoid glass smashing on a very small boat in lumpy conditions has drawn significantly on our creative abilities. This led us to design and build our prized WPC (Whisky Protection Cylinder) which protects its contents and also allows for the chilling of other bottles by being towed behind the boat.

This project looks to challenge us in the most fundamental ways. This is true with regards to self-preservation, seamanship, navigation and the quality of ‘chat’ that can be sustained. I fully expect to come into close contact with Britain’s stunning scenery, thriving coastal communities, and some fantastic sailing conditions. course demanded I spend a minimum of eight months in a French-speaking country, so with a beret on my head and garlic round my neck (in an ironic fashion, of course) I set out for Thionville.

Contrary to my fears, the pupils were mostly very nice, and really wanted to learn English. They saw it as glamorous: the language of Hollywood films and Lady Gaga lyrics. This made the job easier. In fact, it wasn’t the kids which made the job difficult, but my own lack of knowledge of the English language. Miss, what is the difference of ‘somebody’ and ‘someone’?

What is the difference between ‘I like’ ‘I am liking’ and ‘I do like’, if all are present and denote liking something? Miss, when do you use ‘which’ instead of ‘that’? Umm…

Parlez-vous anglais?

One Modern Languages student’s story of a third year spent abroad It was with a slightly heavy heart that I set out on my year abroad. After riding the high of a glorious second year (minimal work, and the prospect of exams a comforting two years away), I was loathe to leave my friends, my family and England’s pleasant pastures green. What’s more, all I knew about the next 16 months was that I would be imparting my wisdom about the English language to a bunch of (most probably) disinterested French

teenagers. Not exactly the most inspiring thought, given my own recollection of GCSE grammar classes.

A few weeks prior to my departure, I learnt I was to be ‘posted’ in the Lorraine region of France, in a small town called Thionville. An email from the assistant the year before me grimly warning me to prepare for ‘the worst year of your life’ only helped to increase my mauvaise humeur. Yet, the

It wasn’t just language I was patchy on, culture lessons were also a struggle. Miss, what does the Royal Family do? What’s the difference between the UK and Great Britain? Err…It was alright for them: French children are made to learn their grammar.

I learnt this whilst babysitting two French enfants, both under the age of eight, and had to test the youngest on irregular verb endings. The elder was learning grammar rules which even the hardiest French finalists would have struggled with. It was quite disheartening listening to an eightyear-old repeat subjunctive rules I still didn’t fully grasp, though I did make her repeat them several times ‘to check she had understood’, when really, I was taking mental notes. ‘Where was that in our education?’ I thought, feeling frustrated. If I had been forced to learn this in primary school, I am sure I could have fielded those tricky questions from the teenagers. It gradually dawned on me that I really didn’t know my own language. How would I ever learn a second, or third language, if my own mother tongue was a mystery to me?

Throughout the year, teaching English showed me just how weird, wonderful and downright bizarre our language is. So really, even though the year abroad is intended to help you better understand a foreign language, in my case I think I have come away with a better grasp of the English language. The fee increase will do little more than to replace existing government grants, and will be split between the University and the colleges, so that Lincoln will receive little benefit compared to the current funding model. In any case the true annual cost of teaching an undergraduate student at Oxford, with its unique and intensive method of teaching in very-small-group tutorials, is approximately £16,000, expenditure supported by the endowments of the colleges and the university, and increasingly through philanthropic support.

We are concerned, however, that the new fee system will affect potential students’ decisions about whether to go to university. At Oxford, we are at pains to ensure that students who want to come to this University, and who have both the required record of achievement and the potential to thrive academically here, should not be dissuaded from doing so on grounds of cost. The University and the colleges have therefore collaborated to establish a package of financial support targeted at students with real identified needs. This was approved by the Office of Fair Access in July 2011 and will be rolled out for English students starting on their first degree courses in Autumn 2012. The package includes both meanstested fee waivers and means-tested bursaries and is designed to ensure that the cost of an Oxford

degree to a student most in need of financial support will definitely be no more, and could be considerably less, than the cost of a degree at any other English university.

The radical restructuring of university funding introduced by the current government will pose significant challenges for the College in years to come. From 2012 the majority of the teaching support grants currently distributed to universities from central government will be withdrawn, and the missing revenue will have to be replaced by higher fee charges to students. Oxford, in common with most other universities, will charge an annual fee rate to UK and EU undergraduates of £9,000, the maximum allowed within the new funding regime. Students will be able to take out loans for the full amount from a government-funded loan scheme and will pay back the loan, and the interest, through deductions from earnings after graduation above a certain threshold.

The expense of this financial support will be borne equally by the University and by the Colleges.

Lincoln will share in the net reduction in fee income occasioned by the fee waiver programme and will also contribute a very significant amount to the pool of bursary funds. Based on current numbers of students in residence who would currently qualify for a bursary, we expect Lincoln’s expenditure on bursaries will run to about £160,000 per annum.

This expenditure will have to be met from the College’s existing but limited pool of endowed funds to mitigate student hardship (currently generating an annual income of about £22,000), from the fees themselves, and from philanthropic contributions from our alumni and friends.

Access and Outreach We are also keen to ensure that such students are encouraged to make applications to Oxford in the first place and are not put off, by myths or 30 Development

misinformation, from taking the first steps toward fulfilling their full potential. Outreach work to schools, providing encouragement, advice and information to teachers and their pupils, will be more important then ever. The Office for Fair Access has required each university to give an account of its proposed activities and expenditure on outreach work but Oxford in general, and Lincoln in particular, has been heavily engaged in just such widening access initiatives for many years. Lincoln is already a recognised leader among Oxford colleges in respect of its work on raising aspirations, and applications, within less advantaged groups. Our Lincolnshire Access Initiative, founded in 2000 to encourage applications to Oxford from this underrepresented region, has provided a model of regionally-focused access work that has now been adopted by all the other Colleges. Every school in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that offers a sixth form has a link College in Oxford and a personal contact who can be called upon for information, guidance and personal visits. As part of this initiative Lincoln has acquired additional regions and we now work with schools in Bristol, Bath, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, bringing our list of link schools to a total of 212.

This figure includes every type of school: Comprehensive, Grammar, Sixth Form College, Independent and Academy.

More sophisticated data on school performance now available to us can help us to pinpoint just those schools where help is needed most, schools where there are little pockets of very gifted students but little experience of making applications to Oxford. Mentoring of students, and teachers, over a long period can make a tremendous difference in raising aspirations and breaking down barriers, whether or real or imagined, to an Oxford career.

The Challenge It is clear that the adjustment to higher fees will pose challenges both for the College and for the first generations of students under the new regime. Looking further into the future we will also need to consider the potential knock-on effects of the new student loan system on participation by UK students in postgraduate studies. To meet these challenges we will need to increase our endowments to ensure the provision of the tutorial system and to develop new models for supporting our students, both graduate and undergraduate. The aim of Living Lincoln is to ensure that the College has the resources to determine its own priorities for education and research. The Governing Body and Development Committee are confident that, building on the tremendous support from alumni in recent years, it will enable Lincoln to respond positively to the newly announced changes and face the future with confidence.

Undergraduate and graduate, present and future, Lincoln’s students require further support in order to ensure that the College continues to attract the very best, regardless of financial means. This means increasing the number and value of bursaries and scholarships we provide and extending our already impressive outreach and access work.

Safeguarding our Fellowship The tutorial lies at the heart of the Lincoln experience. The tradition of small group teaching by leading academics, who combine their teaching with a commitment to world-class research across the full range of disciplines, is unique to Oxford and Cambridge. However, it is parlously underfunded, and is maintained only by drawing on our endowment. Key to this campaign is the idea that our 26 Tutorial and career development Fellowships must be securely funded.

Sustaining our Heritage Lincoln is a mediaeval gem. The intimacy of the quads and Hall, and the magnificence of All Saints’ Library imprint themselves on every student. Historic buildings are expensive to maintain, and the College budgets for this; however Lincoln must update its facilities and resources to enable all our students and Fellows to reach their potential. The redevelopment of the Garden Building will provide much-needed improvements to our performance and entertaining space; the Turl Tavern area will contribute new teaching rooms as well as improved access and facilities for student activities.

We have set ourselves an ambitious target for this Campaign: our goal is to reach £27m by 2014. If this sounds a prohibitively large figure, consider that we have already raised nearly £19m since 2007. The chart (below) shows how much has been raised in each of the main areas of the Campaign, and how that relates to our overall targets.

Lincoln alumni have already been extremely generous to the College. Over the past few decades, the support of alumni and friends has made possible a transformation of the College’s estate. The conversion of All Saints’ Church into a Library, the Bear Lane and High Street development, the establishment of the LincolnEPA Science Centre and associated refurbishment of Museum Road have all been achieved as a result of that support.

The College recognises and values that support in many ways. It is also conscious of its own responsibilities in respect of managing its funds.

In 2002 the College’s endowment was valued at about £27m. By maintaining careful control of regular expenditure and by generating good returns from the College’s investments (averaging more than 12% annually since 2003), the value of endowment assets has grown to about £65m as at July 2010. However, the College needs all of this just to maintain what we do now – we must find the additional resources to support students, teaching and redevelopments from other sources, chief among them philanthropy.

THE HANBURY LAW FELLOWSHIP The Hanbury Law Fellowship is named after Professor Harold Hanbury (18981993), who was a Fellow of Lincoln College from 1929-41, and an Honorary Fellow from 1949 until his death. In 1949 he was also elected as the University’s Vinerian Professor of English Law, which carried with it a Fellowship at All Souls College, where he remained until his retirement in 1964. Hanbury’s contribution to legal academia is made most apparent by the frequent reprints of his book, Modern Equity, now in its 18th Edition.

The Hanbury Law Fellowship appeal aimed to raise £1.5m to fully endow the Fellowship and to ensure that the College will be able to fund the teaching of Law in perpetuity. We are delighted to announce that the appeal has now reached its target, and would like to sincerely thank all those alumni and friends of Lincoln who have contributed. L TrailTalk backpackers j Natalie Gourvitch

Natalie Gourvitch (2004) is the founder and Executive Director of TrailTalks, a non-profit organisation that aims to invigorate young Israelis who go backpacking annually with the skills, awareness and motivation to engage in conversations, step out of their insular groups while on the trails, and learn how to become global partners and citizens (trailtalks.org). TrailTalks is launching its program in Israel this September, with unprecedented initial support from world leaders, the Israeli Defense Force and Foreign Ministry, and many sponsoring and partner corporations (such as El Al Airlines and DavidShield insurance), as well as organisations such as Birthright-Taglit.

Below we’ve adapted a blog entry she wrote about the genesis of the idea for TrailTalks and the influence of her time at Oxford.

The root of TrailTalks began with my childhood. I was born to Israeli parents, raised in New York City, and grew up fascinated by the diversity of cultures I saw around me. Over the many years I travelled between Israel and the US, I became keenly aware of what a huge obstacle cultural difference can be to understanding.

This awareness was brought into high relief by my immersion into a new culture while studying for my undergraduate degree at Oxford.

Suddenly, as an Israeli-American in England, I was sometimes considered loud and confrontational (characteristics that would never have been used to distinguish me from my peers back in NY), and I realised that I had to be careful about how I communicated so that my intentions wouldn’t be misinterpreted. I began to develop an appreciation for different contexts, perspectives, and social mechanisms, and the role they

play when communicating across cultures.

I also soon began to realise the degree of influence young Israelis have when they go travelling after finishing their mandatory military service. I noticed that the perceptions of Israel and Israelis among many of my British peers were based almost exclusively on two things: the British media and the Israelis they met abroad during their gap years or other travel. Those who had positive or constructive experiences with Israeli backpackers gained at least one more perspective and a more nuanced understanding of the complexity of Israel and its conflicts, whereas those who had negative experiences would often see those interpersonal encounters as proof points to what they read in newspapers.

Shortly after graduating, I lived and travelled in South America, where my experiences with Israeli and other international backpackers were

highlighted by many occasions in which there were inadvertent misunderstandings of intention between Israelis and their international peers. In one such instance, I witnessed Israelis communicating in a style that they deemed direct, honest and straight-shooting only to be understood by Brits to be rude and aggressive. Equally, the Brits intended to be polite only to be understood by Israelis as being ‘disingenuous’. Mix in any kind of political reference, and it was a recipe for disaster, where cultural misunderstandings often closed the door to dialogue before it even began and negative conceptions were exacerbated. I realised that a better way to communicate and connect across cultures was urgently needed.

I came to see the many points of interaction among travellers as unparalleled opportunities to build a new understanding and better relationships among the next generation of international leaders. If these young people could leverage the uniquely powerful opportunities they have to exchange their individual perspectives, learn from each other, and seed dynamic and enduring relationships, not only would they be prepared for their increasingly globalised future, but they could develop meaningful relationships that would reverberate across the wider international community. And thus TrailTalks was born with a mission to work towards achieving a world where there is harmony within, between, and among people by invigorating youth to be global partners and citizens. ■ Alumni 35

Walk on the wild side Reggie Heyworth (1980), Director of the Cotswold Wildlife Park, shares the story of how his father came to set up a zoo at a derelict Victorian manor house outside Burford, and how it grew to be the site of one of the UK’s largest zoological collections.

Being a child in the 1960s, I am sure I was not alone in being hooked on animals and Africa by the books of Gerald Durrell and Joy Adamson, not to mention by Daktari on grainy black and white TV. Raised on the family farm just south of Burford, early life seemed full of animals: in addition to cows, sheep and dogs (no cats – my mother as a small child was peed upon by one, and never forgave the species), my father adored his garden aviary of songbirds and his two ponds with exotic ducks, which were given an added air of exclusivity by the high fence around them to keep foxes out.

So perhaps none of his family should have been too surprised when in early 1969 my father announced his intention to start a zoo at his rather derelict birthplace, an uninhabited Victorian manor house two fields away from our farmhouse home. For the previous 20 years, this house with its surrounding parkland and overgrown gardens had been part of a hospital for the mentally ill and for shellshock victims of two world wars. Its vacant denizens occasionally wandered off and got lost, precipitating the mournful wail of a World War Two siren from the hospital to alert us all to the possibility of bumping into a generally benign escapee.

My father’s announcement kicked off frantic activity for my parents. On 22 May 1969, The Witney and West Oxfordshire Gazette bore the headline “Wildlife Park opening near Burford”, and already a Curator and Head Gardener had been recruited, alongside whom my father devised the original layout of the Park, much of which remains to this day.

The animal areas were focussed around a two and a half acre Walled Garden, and a wooded lake area, a restaurant, gift shop, picnic lawns, car park and playground were also created in readiness for the grand opening day.

The original animal stock arrived mostly through animal dealers, and high prices had to be paid; nowadays virtually all zoo animals are captive bred and obtained through coordinated breeding programmes in cooperation with other zoos, and no money changes hands. The first occupants of the various new cages that sprang up in the Walled Garden were penguins, giant hornbills, and prairie dogs from North America (marmot-like creatures who promptly dug deep burrows in their enclosure and were hardly ever seen again), coatis from South America (energetic relatives of the raccoon, who in their endless quest for worms pushed up every square inch of the carefully laid turf in their new enclosure), plus otters, wallabies, tapirs and llamas. Various snakes and other reptiles were on show in the old Victorian conservatory, and carnivorous excitement was assured by the arrival of a puma, which we preferred to call a mountain lion. A Pets’ Corner and the transfer of my father’s ducks from his own ponds to a small and rather smelly ornamental lake in the Park completed the animal offering to an expectant public.

Opening day was Good Friday, 27 March 1970. To his dying day my father will say that his biggest mistake was opening on a bank holiday – the Park was swamped! Fine weather and the modest entry costs of five shillings for an adult (25p) and two shillings for a child (10p) attracted 17,000 people over the weekend. Inevitably, teething problems that should have been minor became major, ticket machines jammed, loos blocked, queues lengthened, but somehow everyone survived and the Cotswold Wildlife Park had been launched.

By the time I went to Oxford for my interviews at Lincoln nine years later, the Park had come a long way. It became clear at my interview with the Rector, Lord Trend, that he was a great fan of the Park, where his particular favourites were the Red Pandas, diminutive and shy distant relations of the better known Giant Panda. Rhinos, zebras and ostriches occupied large enclosures beyond the picnic lawns; tigers, monkeys, gibbons and numerous other bird and mammal

Tanzania by then was desperate, it was nevertheless a fascinating and exciting time, in the remotest parts of that beautiful continent. My work there on what was a high-profile conservation priority also gave me the necessary credibility with both the Park’s staff and other zoo professionals when I came back in 1995 to take on the running of the Park.

Since then the animal collection has continued to progress, but inevitably is reaching a plateau; we have over 280 species on show now, making us one of the largest zoological collections in the UK. For welfare reasons, we would never have elephants, bears or the higher primates (chimps, bonobos, gorillas and orang utans) and having recently added giraffes, there are not many more ways in which to make an impact through new

species had been added and vital infrastructure such as paths, drains, new loos, a train and a vaguely functioning restaurant made us seem almost respectable. Visitor numbers were consistently over the 300,000 mark, enabling my father to plough money back into improvements and, crucially, reroofing the old manor house.

Meanwhile, after leaving Oxford in 1983, I spent seven years at Warburgs in the City and in Hong Kong. It was a hard working but enjoyable time, made more so by the fortunate presence there of other Lincoln alumni, Hugh Richardson (1967) and Mark Seligman (1974).

By 1990, I found myself working as a tour guide in Tanzania, which indirectly led to over three years spent there in rhino conservation. Although the situation facing the Black Rhino in

animals. So the last decade has seen a greater emphasis on developing the gardens, which ties in with our overall aim to help people to appreciate, if only subliminally, the incredible diversity and beauty of the natural world.

The Park is above all a people business. Animals and gardens, plus a restaurant, shops and a train, are all very labour intensive and the Park has 120 full-time equivalent staff. With a small office team, it is inevitable that staff matters in what is still a family company take up much of my time. I am lucky to have a very committed team and fortunate too that, for all of us, working with animals and gardens in such a beautiful place is a vocation and a privilege. I hope that the members of staff derive a lot of satisfaction from their work, and the genuine praise we often receive from visitors makes it all worth while.

Susan Brigden and Perry Gauci brought over Lincoln’s history students for an outing last summer. It poured with rain of course, but even so everyone seemed to have a great time. If we can still appeal to such a discerning audience, as we did to Lord Trend 30 years ago, then I am optimistic that we remain on the right path.

No more porridge!

Peter Dawson (1981) is Governor of HMP High Down in Surrey. He shares with Imprint some insights into his current role and career in the Civil Service.

High Down was recently featured in a BBC documentary called The Prison Restaurant, which followed life in The Clink, an on-site charity and gourmet restaurant. The Clink offers prisoners the chance to receive training to work in the catering industry on release, with the aim of reducing rates of re-offending.

I found prisons fascinating “I joined the Civil Service on the fast stream and ended up working in the Home Office. I got a job in the headquarters of the Prison Service working on policy at just the time that the Strangeways riot happened, followed by the Woolf Report, which paved the way for a raft of radical prison reform. As is so often the case in government, the most interesting jobs happen by accident, and tend to coincide with something going badly wrong. I found prisons fascinating, but also came to feel that the way we deal with imprisonment is a fundamentally important indicator of our health as a society. I also liked the people I came across in prisons, both those who worked there and those who lived there. So when the chance came up later in my career to go back to the Prison Service and then to move from policy-making into the operational side, I took it.”

A typical day “It sounds corny, but it’s genuinely hard to predict. As the person in charge of the prison, my life tends to involve dealing with staff and resourcing issues more than prisoners, but it is a face-to-face job. You are very much on show, and people notice what you do more than what you say, and a lot more than what you write. One of the strong themes of recent years has been how much the job requires making relationships with the other agencies and groups that deliver services in prisons, so I spend a lot of my time making sure we have effective partnerships both inside and outside the prison. Very occasionally, you have to go from management into ‘command’ mode, if there’s a serious incident. That’s 38 Alumni

always nerve-wracking, but you are trained to deal with it and there are people around you who rise to the situation.”

Not a simple equation “The variety of people you come across in the prison service is a huge attraction for me.

Prisons are complete communities, so I get to work alongside not just prison officers, but administrators, nurses, chaplains (of all faiths), electricians, plumbers, teachers, psychiatrists, probation officers, cooks – pretty much any profession you can name. When it comes to the prisoners, there are people from all over the world and from every walk of life. I have met a few genuinely unpleasant people, and a few scary people, but that’s not typical. What does strike you is the long history of hardship, neglect and poor decision-making that puts most prisoners into prison – it is certainly not a simple equation of bad people getting their just desserts.”

Making an impact “The most challenging aspects are how you have an impact on the tiny repetitive day-to-day interactions that really determine what life is like for prisoners and staff on the one hand, but on the other how you keep challenging the prison to achieve more than it does, including trying to have an impact on prisoners’ future life chances.”

The Clink project “At High Down we have a very talented and inspirational chef (Alberto Crisci MBE) – rather like Lincoln.

His day job is to keep the prison fed, but he has always used that to train the prisoners who work in the main kitchen.

He wanted to provide a realistic training environment, and we got the opportunity to combine the conversion of a storehouse into a staff mess with a fundraising effort to get it equipped and set up as a high-class restaurant. It has just taken off, driven by the fabulous quality of the cooking and service, virtually all of which is carried out by prisoners or former prisoners.

“The benefits are interesting and more than I imagined. It is a training and resettlement project first of all – we are equipping prisoners for work after release. But it has allowed many thousands of people to see prisoners in a new light through dining at the restaurant, and made it easy for me to build relationships with key local groups and individuals. We have also hosted fundraising lunches there which have benefitted charities that work in the prison and further afield. The list of supporters is extraordinary.”

The benefits of an Oxford education “Whitehall placed a premium on intellectual strength and the ability to write well - Lincoln certainly helped me prosper in that world. In truth, I was allowed to make policy on matters I knew almost nothing about, demonstrating the ability to construct a plausible theory about how the world might work, rather than a real understanding of how it did.

“I would say now that a more important legacy of my education at Lincoln has been an approach to the study of human behaviour that encourages a broad perspective, and perhaps helps to identify ways in which people collectively will tend to react under pressure of one sort or another. It pays me in my current job to remember that, historically, societies tend to scapegoat and tend to abuse authority at the expense of the most vulnerable. So, a sense of historical perspective and the confidence to hold your own opinion is the rather pious answer – the ability to recognise exceptional cooking perhaps the more immediately useful…” ■

Events 2010-11 Lincoln’s alumni events programme has continued to flourish this year both at the College and overseas. Over 650 alumni have attended an event during 2010-11 and we hope that number will continue to rise in the years ahead.

Here at Lincoln we have had the usual host of Year Dinners and Gaudies. The first Gaudy was held in October, when Hall was packed to the rafters for the 2002-04 event. Both the Buttery and the Smoking Room were opened up to accommodate the large number of returning alumni, and it was wonderful to see so many recent leavers back in the College. The 1973-76 Gaudy in March was also very well attended with about 90 alumni returning.

Year Dinners have also been held for 1960 (hosted

by Anthony Hacking in September), 1950 (a luncheon hosted by Chris Willy in November), 1971 (hosted by Charles Berry in March), 1980 (hosted

by Cathy Knowles in March), and 1951 (hosted by George Willett in May). Thanks go to all those who have hosted during 2010-11, both for assisting with the planning stages and speaking on the day of their reunions.

The Rector, Paul Langford, and Assistant Director of Development, Hannah Thomas, travelled to North America in September to visit Boston and Toronto. They were delighted to meet with alumni in the two cities, and very grateful to Phil and Deborah Budden (both 1985) in Boston, and Thomas Drucker (1961) in Toronto, who generously opened up their homes for alumni receptions. The Director of Development, Susan Harrison, then travelled to California in March to meet with alumni in San Francisco and Los Angeles, and to attend the Vice-Chancellor’s receptions in the two cities.

Our London events programme has continued with the usual November and March meetings of the London Dining Club at the Cavalry and Guards Club on Piccadilly. In November, Susan Harrison spoke about the College’s alumni relations and fundraising programmes, and in March Lincoln alumna Susannah Lipscomb (1998) spoke about her book 1536 – The Year That Changed Henry VIII. Please note that there will be no Dining Club meeting in November 2011. We also held a very successful Lawyers’ Networking Evening at Clifford Chance in February, and thanks are due to partner Simon Crown (1992) for allowing us to book the firm’s wonderful 30th floor in Canary Wharf for the evening.

returned to Lincoln on Saturday 4 June.

Fortunately the weather was kind to us this year, and the alumni in attendance enjoyed a lovely warm spring evening in the Rector’s Garden. The Lincoln Society Dinner has this year been moved to September, and we look forward to seeing many alumni there.

Our 2010-11 events programme drew to its conclusion in early July with a Medicine Reunion Dinner on Friday 1 July and a dinner and recital to celebrate the completion of the new organ project on Friday 8 July (see p. 09 for a full report on this project).

There have been two Murray Society gatherings during 2010-11 – one held at the College in October, and one held in London in May. In Oxford, Murray Society members were invited to view the Chantrey Wall at the Ashmolean Museum and hear a talk back at Lincoln by Dr Greg Sullivan (Chantrey Fellow at the Museum from 2006-09) on ‘Sir Francis Chantrey and the Ashmolean Museum’. In London, members were given a tour of Spencer House, London’s only surviving 18th century private palace, followed by lunch at the Oxford and Cambridge Club on Pall Mall. Thanks go to Ewen Moir (1956) for helping to organise the London event.

Alumni news David Martinson (1949) made several visits to the pilgrim routes in France and Spain, leading to Santiago de Compostela, between 2000 and 2009. Over the nine years he walked for a total of 211 days and covered a distance of over 3,000 miles, carrying his rucksack the whole way.

Robert Burns (1951) published Triumph: The Life and Art of Captain Adrian Jones with Logaston Press.

The Shropshire-born sculptor and painter Adrian Jones (1845-1938) was one of the greatest artists of the heyday of the British Empire. He was a celebrated sculptor of military memorials, including the famous Peace Quadriga, which surmounts the Wellington Arch at London’s Hyde Park Corner. Robert has been interested in Jones since he became headmaster of Ludlow Grammar School, the artist’s old school, in 1970.

John Lawton (1952) has set up a charity, Soldiers for Youth (S4Y), to help bring people leaving the armed services into youth work. The London Borough of Wandsworth is a partner in the project, where exservice people are already in senior positions. John hopes that the charity’s work will spread nationally and would be glad to hear from any Lincoln alumni who might be interested in getting involved. Robert Porter (1954) was awarded an honorary DSc by James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, in December 2009.

William Ridley (1955) has made contributions to books on finance and economics and gained a BA in Archaeology from UCL and an MA in Humanities from the Open University.

John Twidell (1957) is co-editor of the book Offshore Wind Power, published by Multi Science Publishing in 2009.

David Cornwell (1952), better known as John le Carré, published his latest novel, Our Kind of Traitor, in September 2010. The story follows an Oxford academic and his barrister girlfriend from a Britain in recession, to Antigua, Paris and Switzerland, as they encounter the full might of Britain’s Intelligence Establishment. Our Kind of Traitor is John le Carré’s 22nd novel since he began writing in the 1960s. It is published by Viking and is available now. He also made national headlines in March this year when he gifted his entire archive to the Bodleian Library, with the intention that this will become its permanent

Michael Steiner (1958) has been nominated for a Distinguished Friend of Oxford award by the Bodleian Library “in gratitude for his support in bringing the archives of Franz Kafka to the Bodleian and for his continued thoughtful guidance in its oversight”.

The award ceremony will take place in September. Michael is the only son of Marianna Steiner, one of four nieces of Franz Kafka, who were his closest surviving relatives at the end of World War Two. Michael mentioned this relationship to Tony Werner (1958) when they were at Lincoln together, and he in turn mentioned it to his tutor at Magdalen College, Malcolm Pasley, who was a Kafka expert. This led to a close friendship between the Steiners

and Pasley. The original Kafka manuscripts were at this time in Switzerland (where the publishers had deposited them with the agreement of Max Brod, Kafka’s friend, for safekeeping) and were not accessible to scholars. After much discussion, a plan was formulated to transfer the manuscripts on loan to the Bodleian so that supervised access could be afforded to scholars. Pasley himself collected the manuscripts and drove them in a small Fiat to Oxford. In the years that followed, one of the nieces, Gerty Kaufman, donated her one third share to the Bodleian, and Michael’s mother in turn donated her one third in her Will. One third is owned by the heirs of the remaining two Czech nieces.

One of the beneficial results of the deposit of the manuscripts in the Bodleian was to enable a long overdue critical edition of Kafka’s works to be published, and another was the publication of facsimile editions, and the conservation of the original documents.

Michael Smith (1959) has been retired since 2005 but remains active in local churches. In 2010 he published Gospel for Starters, a very simple translation of Mark’s Gospel with a simple commentary. The book is specially designed for those who have never read the Bible before.

Christopher Breiseth (1960) retired as President and CEO of the Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt Institute at Hyde Park, New York in January 2009. He served in that capacity from 2001 to 2009 and is now President Emeritus. While he continues to serve on several notfor-profit boards related to the era of FDR, he is now fully retired and living on Lake George at Ticonderoga in the Adirondack Mountains of New York state.

David Milner (1962) was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in May 2011.

Bruce Warren (1962) was appointed as one of the seven inaugural Fellows of the Royal Society of New South Wales in Australia in 2009.

Jon Wilkinson (1962) and his wife May Tha-Hla set up a charity called Helping The Burmese Delta in the aftermath of the devastating Cyclone Nargis in 2008. After an initial phase of emergency aid, they have focused on building schools in villages in one of the remotest areas of the Irrawaddy delta, and have now completed eight with four more in the pipeline this year. The region has virtually no roads, no healthcare, no electricity, and receives very little help. The charity is also working with The Laura Case Trust, founded by another Lincoln alumnus David Case (1962) and his wife Anthea, to train community health workers to provide much needed primary health care.

Recent compositions by Peter Witchell (1964) include ‘Strictly Physical’ for saxophone quartet; a carol,‘The Waiting World’, premiered in July 2010 in Marlborough College Chapel; and ‘Whistful Whimsies’ for flute, clarinet, cello and piano, given its first outing at a society wedding on the tiny Shetland Island of Vaila.

Robert Rogers (1968) has been appointed Under Clerk of the Parliaments (Clerk of the House of Commons), and will take up the post in October 2011.

Philip Smallwood (1968) retired from Birmingham City University at the end of July 2010. His latest monograph, “Critical Occasions: Dryden, Pope, Johnson and the History of Criticism” appeared later in the year. He took up a visiting fellowship in the Department of English at Bristol University in October 2010.

Ian C Storey (1969) has published The Fragments of Old Comedy, 3 volumes, Loeb Classical Library 513515 in the spring of 2011. He is entering his 38th (and final) year as Professor in the Department of Ancient History & Classics at Trent University, and is looking forward with fond anticipation to retirement at the end of June 2012. He continues also as a Lay Reader at St John's Anglican Church in Peterborough.

Alumni news David Smith (1971) published Dream On with Quartet Books in October 2010. The book is described as a ‘demi-memoir’, recounting David’s 30 years in journalism and his more recent quest, running a vineyard in the Argentine Andes. The vineyard’s wine, SonVida, is now exclusively available at Gaucho Grill restaurants in the UK. David is grateful to Professor Stephen Gill for saying a few words at a launch party held for the book and the wine in London last year.

Garo Keheyan (1973), Founder and President of the Pharos Arts Foundation in Cyprus, has been elected President of the International Council 2011 of the English Speaking Union.

Ian Hall (1976) is currently Professor of Molecular Medicine and Dean of the Medical School at the University of Nottingham. He is married to Gillian and they have three daughters.

John Rolley (1979) is working in Zurich for UBS and has recently been appointed Head of Advisory & Sales Training for Switzerland and EMEA. He would be delighted to hear from any Lincoln alumni visiting the Zurich area, and is looking to establish a regular lunch event. Elizabeth Graham née Day (1982)’s latest novel, The History Room, was published by Pan Macmillan in April 2011.

Lynn Shepherd (1982)’s second novel, Tom-All-Alone’s, is due out in 2012.

Inspired by Bleak House, it will be published by Corsair in the UK to coincide with Charles Dickens’s bicentenary in February, and by Random House in the US later in the summer. Her contract with both publishers includes a third novel. Her first book, Murder at Mansfield Park, recently won an award in the US. Mahamudu Bawumia (1987), economist and former Deputy Governor of Ghana’s central bank, has been appointed Resident 42 Alumni

Representative to Zimbabwe by the African Development Bank (AfDB).

The AfDB’s mission in Zimbabwe is to take a lead role in assisting in the country’s re-engagement with the international community.

Andrew Webster (1989) and his wife Catherine welcomed a baby daughter, Elizabeth, on 16 December 2009, weighing 6lbs 2oz.

L The winning Oxford Almni rowing Team, including Pilar Bertuzzi and Nick Davies Anna Coombs (1991) formed Tangle in 2009, a theatre company championing inter-cultural relations in Britain. Tangle retains 95% of artists of African origin. In May 2010, Anna won the TMA Eclipse Award in recognition of this work and subsequently took up a director’s attachment at London’s National Theatre.

John Rux-Burton (1992) published West of Nod: a photographic journey from the Welsh borders to the sea, via the Blurb website (www.blurb.com) in July 2010.

Ahilan Arulanantham (1994) was awarded the 2010 Arthur C Helton Human Rights Award by the American Immigration Lawyers’ Association (AILA), in recognition of “his body of innovative litigation and its enormous benefits for countless vulnerable non-citizens for their rights and dignity.” Ahilan is Director of Immigrants’ Rights and National Security at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Southern California. He was presented with the award at AILA’s annual conference in Maryland in summer 2010.

Jerome Ellepola (1994) and his wife Marie, welcomed a baby boy, Alexandre, on 2 October 2010.

Alexandre was born at Bronovo Hospital in the Hague, weighing 8lbs and measuring 20 inches in length!

Paul Meredith (1994) welcomed a baby daughter, Olivia Rachel, on 19 September 2009.

Rachel Trenholm née Bailey (1994) got married to Sven Trenholm in 1996. They are now back in the UK, having lived in the USA and Canada

for 14 years, and are happily homeeducating their five children.

Pilar Bertuzzi (1995) and former Lincoln College Boat Club captain, Nick Davies (1994), both rowed with the winning Oxford crew in the Oxford-Cambridge Alumni boat race that took place on the Potomac River in Georgetown on 25 September 2010. Oxford claimed victory by a length and a half in the race organised by the Oxford and Cambridge alumni network in Washington, DC. Paul Williams (1995) was appointed Editor of Geophysical Research Letters, the top-cited journal in the field, in summer 2010.

David White (1996) and his wife Susana welcomed a new baby girl, Isabelle, on 27 January 2011.

Emily Howard (1997) has collaborated with a youth opera company, Second Movement, to produce a 12-minute opera, Zatopek!, for a youth chorus and mixed ensemble. The piece will be broadcast on BBC Radio Three, and also tour the UK next year as part of New Music 20x12, a UK wide programme consisting of 20 new works, each lasting 12 minutes, which have been commissioned to feature centre stage of the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Emil Zatopek (1922-2000) was a legendary Czech Olympian who set a world record of 13:57 minutes for the 5000m in 1954. Two of Emily’s Lincoln contemporaries Nicholas Chalmers (1997) and Oliver Mears (1997) are also involved in Second Movement as Conductor and Director respectively.

Erica Longfellow (1997) has been appointed Dean of Divinity, Fellow, and Chaplain, at New College, Oxford, and will take up the post in Michaelmas Term 2011.

Fiona Bell née Macdonald (1998) got married to Alistair Bell (1999, Imperial College) in Edinburgh in May 2010. Bridesmaids included Jennifer Black (1998) and Michelle Pratt (1995, Teddy Hall).

Arabella Neville-Rolfe (1998) married Lucy Fry (2000, Oriel) at Chelsea Town Hall on Saturday 10 July 2010. Mary Harrington (1998) read ‘Dedication to My Wife’ by TS Eliot during the ceremony.

Bijan Omrani (1998) has published Asia Overland: Tales of Travel on the Trans-Siberian & Silk Road, a historical look at those who have travelled the Trans-Siberian Railway, the Silk Road and the treacherous mountains of the Indian subcontinent, including photographs, maps and archival illustrations. The book is published in paperback by Odyssey Publications and is available now.

Stephen Hearn (1999) has been appointed Chaplain and Radford Fellow at Exeter College, Oxford, and will take up the post in Michaelmas Term.

a Fulbright Police Research Fellowship, and will be going to study at George Mason University in Virginia later this year. Jayme is currently studying for a Postgraduate Diploma in Police Leadership and Management, and the Fulbright award will allow him to spend five months studying how police behaviour influences public attitudes to policing in the Washington, DC area.

Erik Tonning (2001) has been awarded the prestigious Bergen Research Foundation Scholarship (BRS). The scholarship, tenable at the University of Bergen in Norway over a four year period, allows young researchers to engage in projects that make them eligible for tenure. Erik began work at Bergen in January on his project entitled ‘Modernism and Christianity: Literature, History, Archive’.

Trilby Kent (2001)’s first novel, Smoke Portrait, was published by Alma Books in April 2011. Her second children’s book, Stones for my Father, was recently published in Canada and the USA. In 2010 she was shortlisted for The Guardian‘s International Development Journalism Competition. She is married and pursuing a PhD in Creative Writing.

Alex Pearmain and Sally March (both 2002) were married on 8 August 2010 in Hexham, Northumberland. The wedding ceremony was held at Hexham Abbey, followed by a reception at Langley Castle. Alex and Sally met while studying history at Lincoln College. Alex is now Head of Social Media at O2 and Sally is a history teacher in Amersham

James Whale (2002) qualified as a Chartered Accountant (ACA) in November 2009 with Felton Pumphrey Chartered Accountants in Windsor.

Mirakle Couriers, a company set up in Mumbai by Dhruv Lakra (2007), has been awarded the National Award for the Empowerment of People with Disabilities by the Ministry of Social Justice in India.

Dhruv established the company in 2008, and it is staffed entirely by deaf workers. Dhruv was also recently the recipient of the CNN – IBN Young Indian Leader Award for 2011. ■

My Lincoln: David Allen David Allen (1956) studied Modern Languages at Lincoln, specialising in Medieval French and Anglo-Norman. He has enjoyed a long and distinguished career teaching Management within the Open University and the University of Wales. He has also spent time teaching on MBA programmes in China. His particular interests include human resources, strategic decision-making, creative problem-solving and complexity theory. He was appointed Associate Dean of the Business School at the University of Wales, Newport in 1992, and retired in 1996. He is now self-employed and lives in Monmouth.

What are your most vivid memories of your time at Lincoln?

Tutorials with Donald Whitton, the Evening Service in Chapel with Vivien Green, dining in Hall. The catering at Lincoln has always been first class and whereas friends from other colleges tended to eat in the town, I always dined in Hall. Besides, what an atmosphere and what a challenge every evening to try and make out the words of the Latin grace, spoken at such speed by the senior scholar!

Which College rooms did you live in?

I lived in Lincoln House in my first year with a room overlooking the Turl, so I had the College continuously in view. It found it very comfortable and convenient. I had just come from the Joint Services Language School at Crail in Fifeshire, located on a World War Two RNAS airfield, where I lived in the Officer Cadets’ spider, so Lincoln House was luxury indeed. In my second and third year I lived in digs – not so convenient. Good digs were difficult to get.

Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities at Lincoln?

In my first year, I was a member of the athletics club, as a high jumper (Centipede standard) and hurdler. The captain was Derek Johnston, the 1956 Olympic half mile silver medallist, and there were a number of Blues – including George Northern, Colin Buchanan and David Churchill. It was only two years after Roger Bannister had run the four minute mile at Iffley Road, so it was an exciting time to take part in athletics matches there. I was awarded College Colours. In my second year, I played soccer in Dave Swayne’s team as goalkeeper, but didn’t have a very successful season, I have to admit. In my final year, I was part of the team competing in the shooting Cuppers.

How has your time at Lincoln influenced you, and what particular skills and ideas has it given you?

It was a great privilege to be an undergraduate at Lincoln. I learned to be more academically independent, more analytical and to challenge existing ‘mindsets’, if that doesn’t sound too jargonistic. The University library facilities were excellent, so you could easily learn how to research topics for yourself. I liked the ambience of the Bodleian and used to work there most days; it was also convenient for lunch at the nearby pub, where I would meet up with friends. By the time I graduated, I felt confident enough to tackle anything and, in fact, went on to study metallurgical engineering, in order to pursue a career in Industry – quite a change from medieval French and AngloNorman literature! privileges of Oxford with the Hereford Society. This year, for example, we were invited to visit the Bishop’s Palace and Gardens in Hereford.

Are there any Fellows or contemporaries you have particular memories of?

My French Tutor, Donald Whitton, of course, Vivien Greene, the Senior Tutor, and the Rector, Dr Oakeshott. They set, what business folk would now refer to as ‘world class standards’, which one strove to emulate. I remember Mark Lavery, who entertained with his accounts of schooldays at Downside and who, with Colin Johnson and David Swayne, were all ex-Services Russian Course members reading Modern Languages; Michael Manser shared tutorials with me in my first term. Ewen Moir kindly organises the occasional reunion dinner, so I have been able to keep in touch with the wider 1956 community. ■

How do I request a transcript of my degree results?

For information on how to request a transcript of your degree results, please contact the College Office on 01865 279801. The Development Office DOES NOT hold any academic records.

How do I book a place at a graduation ceremony?

Contact the Rector’s PA, Sally Lacey, on 01865 279804 or sally.lacey@lincoln.ox.ac.uk. A full list of available dates is also available on the Lincoln website in the ‘Keeping In Touch’ section of the Alumni and Development pages.

The University has arranged six additional graduation days in 2011 and 2012 to help clear waiting lists and to provide additional opportunities for those who have not yet graduated to do so. The extra dates for Lincoln alumni are Friday 20 April 2012, Friday 4 May 2012 and Saturday 12 May 2012.

How do I arrange to look around the College on a visit to Oxford?

Members of the Development Office staff are happy to give tours of College to alumni and their guests during office hours (Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm) – advance notice is preferred. At weekends, the public areas of College are open to visitors from 11am-5pm.

I would like to come back and dine at High Table – when can I do this?

Alumni are entitled to dine at High Table once per full term, Sunday to Friday, provided they are no longer students of the University. A threecourse meal with coffee currently costs £18.20. Please note that High Table rights are for alumni only, and do not extend to guests or nonalumni spouses. Bookings should be made via the Lodge on 01865 279800 before 10am on the day you wish to dine, or, for Sunday dining, by 10am on the preceding Friday.

Can I book accommodation at Lincoln for a visit to Oxford?

Outside of term time, rooms at the EPA Centre can be booked via the College’s new online booking system, available in the ‘Conferences and

Can I get married at Lincoln?

Can I have access to the Library as an alumnus/na?

Space in the College Library is always at a premium, so it is not, therefore, practical to offer desk space or access to the Library to our alumni, although members of the Development Office staff are happy to take alumni in to see the Library on tours of the College. If you have a specific research need or feel your case deserves individual attention, please contact the Development Office.

How do I update my contact details?

Unfortunately we are unable to give out other people’s contact details without their permission, due to the restrictions of the Data Protection Act. Some alumni have indicated that they are happy for their details to be shared, but if this is not the case we are happy to forward a letter or email and to ask the individual in question to respond to you. You can also look on our new Online Alumni Directory.
