Week 5

Linear compositions

31

Grade:

CW 5: 9.5 /10

HW 5: 8.5 /10

32

Classwork 5

Concept:

- Two opposite feelings

- Fear vs Curiosity

Process:

- Got 1 meter copper wire to bend

- Worked with nose clip pliers to get the different curves

- Kept on testing out the different curves I could get from thid material

- Some trials:

Analysis:

Planes: Each plane between wires at a different accented hyperbolic directional parabolic supporting

Keywords: Wire, curves, planes, feelings, fear, curiosity

Materials: Copper wire

29
33

Feedback: This material was rather hard to work with, I needed to put more work into the curves but tried to ensure as many planes between the wires as possible.

Reflection: To imrpove this model I would need to vary the curves and planes more, and try to make the concept for this model more obvious.

34

Assignment 5

Concept:

- Model made out of wire representing a girl dancing, focusing on her dress dancing along.

Analysis:

Planes:

Keywords: Wire, curves, line, planes, axis

Materials: Copper wire

Process: 35

Feedback: This model didn’t represent the concept as much I intended on it and I think its kind of visually unbalaced but has multiple axis and curves from different views.

Reflection: To imrpove this model I would need to use a different material that would be more flexible to use and try to get more differernt axis.

36

Week 6

Planar compositions

37

Grade:

CW 6: 8.5 /10

HW 6: 8.25 /10

38

Concept: - Planar composition made out of one sheet of paper

Classwork 6

Process:

Analysis:

Planes:

Each plane facing a different angle and no two identical planes whether in dimensions or angle and direction.

Keywords:

Planar, sheet, planes, hierarchy, acxis, composition

Materials: A3 sheet of paper

Axis: Tried getting Each curve in the spiral to have significantly different axis

Hierarchy: From top to bottom Radius of spiral gets bigger

29
39

Feedback: This model was hard to balance on its own so I used a wire core and put paper around it to hide it but was difficult to find a way that fit well into the model and paper was too floppy.

Reflection: To improve this model I should use a denser material like canson paper to get perfect spiral as this material ruined how the spiral looked and should work on getting more axis.

40

Concept:

Planar hats each person doing one to represent the other person

Model 1: Shows Hala’s cheerfulness, loving the outdoors and adventerous Model 2: To show Lina’s calmness and is joyful

Keywords:

Planes, Headpiece, line, axis

Materials:

Assignment 6

Process:

Worked with: Hala Haitham

Analysis:

Hierarchy: Model 1 taller at the centre and getting shorter as it spreads outwards

Model 2 from one side to the curves get smaller in radius

Connections:

Wedging and craddling used for some connections

Axis:

Tissue

Canson sheet

paper and fabric like paper
41

Model 1

Model 2

Feedback: Model 1 and 2 should’ve had more differentiable widths between each curve, but we tried to get as many axis as possible and differ each curve or plane in this composition.

Reflection: To improve model 1 should work on better connection between the planes and make them vary more in width, same for model 2 and try to spread curves more get more negative space.

42

Week 7

Mid-Term

43

Grade: Overall: 8.5 /10

44

Mid-Term

Concept:

Models based on shots from dance videos

Model 1: I decided to portray the part where they were all joining together and moving upwards in a swift motion.

Model 2: I decided to show how the guy and the girl were joined together through their swirling, circular motion and calm movments.

Keywords:

Movement, dynamic, curves

Materials:

- Egg tray

- Paper

- Wooden sticks

- Wire

Process:

Analysis: Hierarchy

Model 1: longest part at the bottom (dominant) and rest getting smaller going up thr wire.

Model 2: I made the central spiral the biggest in dimensions as movement more dominant follow and getting smaller representing the two dancers.

Connections: Wedging and craddling used for some connections

Axis:

45

Model 1

Model 2

Feedback: I tried to capture the movements of the dancers in the video. For Model 1 I made sure to and Model 2 I tried to make the two different dancers clear while connecting them together too.

Reflection: To improve model 1 I should try to show the wire more as it should be more significant in the model. Model 2 should try to vary the dimensions of each strip more.

46

Week 8/9 Project 1

47

Grade: Overall: A

48

Project 1

Post-modernism architecture

It is an eclectic, colorful style of architecture and the decorative arts that appeared from the late 1970s and continues in some form today. A late 20th-century style and concept in the arts, architecture, and criticism, which represents a departure from modernism and is characterized by the consciousness of earlier styles and conventions, a mixing of different artistic styles and media, and a general distrust of theories.

Description:

To create a Model design based on architecture styles, from prior Eras and decades.

Keywords:

Structured, Unique, Colorful Intersecting, Organized, Curved

Philip Johnson's table lamp

Inspiration:

Materials:

1st trial: foam board

Concept:

This building by Philip Johnson is called gate's house. Because it's colorful and has irregular shapes, i wanted to create a lamp that is fully made up of irregular shapes.

Micheal Graves Lamp

Materials:

Trial: Foam Final product: Wood Inspirations:

Robert Venturi’s Bed stand

By: Jana Kenawy

Process:

-Using Different Colored Papers, shapes were cut out in order to compose a structure. -Various Colored papers were used to create the body and curves using a box cutter for the shaping.

-Piercing and Wedging were the two most common techniques used when assembling the model together.

-The model was stuck together and stabilized using shish sticks and glue gun glue.

Process:

Materials: Inspiration:

Coloured Paper Glue gun

Cutting board

Shish sticks

Model Pictures:

Model Pictures:

Sketch:

Reflection:

This current trial is not very successful, i just have a rough idea and I tries to implement it. However I know I will use irregular shapes in my model like I did in the trial but, I'll make more connections, axes, and sizes.

Analysis:

Connections: Mainly used and will use in final product, piercing at the base, wedding spiral pieces together and the connection at the top.

Hierarchy: For the spiral, I will have the sizes

and dimensions get smaller going up Axis: Tried ensuring as many axis having the dominant and subdominant shapes have different axis then each subordinate a different one.

Reflection:

Was difficult to get different dimensions without making the model look unbalanced. I tried taking the repetitive elements from Michael graces buildings which really helped.

Feedback:

To improve this model I should work on better connections between the shapes in the model and vary dimensions more but not easy with material and try to make it more similar to Michael grave, more symmetrical

Model Pictures:

Analysis:

- The model turned out to contain multiple curved segments that intersected well together.

- The angled linear look of Robert Venturi’s style of architecture was emulated well in the model as the bed stand was leaning to the side instead of straight.

- It took inspiration from his animalistic traits that he implemented in his work which derived nicely from it.

Reflection:

the model could have used less negative space when being constructed together as some areas appeared strange and misconstrued.

Inspiration:

Postmodernism Architecture

Michael Graves buildings

Project 1

Michael Graves’s Table Lamp

Process:

Analysis:

Hierarchy:

The main body is the dominant as is the biggest in dimensions, the nthe subdominant shape at the top, and bottom subordinate smalled width.

Connections:

Wedging and

Piercing, cradling used for some

Keywords:

Colorful, symmetrical, masses, axis, eclectic, rectilinear, lines

Materials:

Balsa Wood

Fabric

Metal wire

Connections

Axis: Two main Axis just like Buildings Used for

Inpiration

51

Feedback: This model was particularly difficult to work with couldn’t get the connections intended but model turned out very close to the mock up, and tried making the bottom the bigger mass in this model.

Reflection: To improve this model I should try using an easier material to work with that will get more significant difference in dimensions, and try getting more accurate colors.

52

Week 10-13 Final Project

53

Grade:

54

Concept:

Model 1: Boho style

Final Project (initial concepts)

Process:

Model 1:

- Blow up two different sized balloons

- Using pva glue, stuck the toothpicks together around the balloon

Analysis:

Hierarchy:

Model 1: dominant sphere bigger than other smaller

Model 2: size of airplanes get smaller going up

Model 2: Airplanes

- Poped the balloon and removed it, adjusted any toothpicks that moved

Model 3: Dystopian era

- Stuck small one onto the bigger one fitting perfectly on it almost tangent.

Model 2:

- Made paper airplane out of different colored A4 sheets

Keywords:

Module, axis, dynamic, hierarchy, boho, airplanes, dystopia, connections

Materials:

- Toothpicks

- Colored A4 paper

- Balloons

- Glue: Glue gun/ PVA

- Cut some of them to get different sized paper airplanes

- Stuck together using glue gun

Model 3:

- Made open ended boxes out of folded up paper of two colors

- Stuck the edges together using glue gun and the cuboid

Model 3: going outwards from both sides getting smaller

Connections:

Wedging and

Piercing, cradling used for some

Connections

Axis:

55

Model 1 Model 3

Model 2

Feedback: For model 1 it was challenging to make but turned out the best that we will try to make, model 2 was a good idea but the connection in the middle made it weaker and model 3 also an option but rather simple

Reflection: In model 1 we should try out doing it full scale to test out if its good and we are able to do it first. To improve model 2 we should’ve figured out another material that was more different and cheaper, and model 3 we have to make it more complex if making it with cartons for final submission

56

Inspiration:

Boho Style:

•Boho style is a free-spirited aesthetic that mixes different cultures and artistic expressions into an eclectic style with an emphasis on organic elements and nature. When putting together your boho style space, mixing patterns, metals, woods, materials, animal hides and trinkets from your travels is highly encouraged.

•Known to value creativity over money, and to have a lack of structure, opting instead for carefree layers of patterns and texture.

Keywords:

Uncoordinated, Unorganized, Free flowing, Natural, Recyclable

Materials:

Final Project

Process:

- Toothpicks/ sheesh sticks

- Balloons

- Glue: PVA white glue/ adhesive glue

Analysis:

The models came in varying sizes and not all came out perfect, this was due to the materials, the balloons, being faulty and not a perfect way of designing the model.

Each element connected to the other differently

With the center elements more dominant than subdominant going outwards and the small subordinate ones.

The attachment of the sticks together took a long time due to the glue not being designed for fast use, however this was fixed by substituting the glue for adhesive which worked a lot better.

Additionally, due to the fragility of the models it was hard making many of them due to the nature of how they were made, many errors occurred that set us back on creating a better structure .

57

Reflection: This material was hard to work with, the balloons kept on popping and took time to dry. The wood sticks helped define the element

Feedback: To improve this model we should find a better material other than balloons for the basis of the structure, that also differs in sizes
