Early one morning a small house wren landed next to a pond. His reflection in the waters caught the wren’s eye.
“Nothing about me stands out. I’m a really boring bird! ” He realized. “There must be something I need to make me look better… something to make a bird beautiful!”
So that day, the wren decided he would find out what made a bird beautiful.
Suddenly the grass behind him began to rustle. The wren turned to find a big, hungry cat letting out a low growl…
Startled, the wren dove into the sky and began his quest. Hungry cats were scary.
The wren noticed a blue jay resting on a bench.
“Your feathers are so brilliant and match the skies!”
“Why thank you,” the bird replied. “Do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“Hmm.. I'm not quite sure”
But the wren had already gotten his answer. He needed cool blue feathers to become beautiful.
Soon enough the wren overheard the call of a mourning dove He listened in awe.
“Your voice reaches thousands of creatures every morning! Say, do you know what makes a bird beautiful?"
“Your guess is as good as mine!” The dove sang back. But the wren had gotten his answer. He would need a loud, grand voice to become beautiful.
The wren moved along the forest. He scoured through the trees and stopped next to a Great Horned owl.
““Your yellow eyes shimmer and glint so brightly! Do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“That’s a rather tricky question that I cannot satisfy” she responded. But the wren had already gotten his answer. He needed shining yellow eyes that glowed to become beautiful.
As he kept flying through the skies, a pelican hovered next to him.
“Your giant beak can carry anything of any size! Tell me, do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“Why thank you…though that is a mystery to me”
But the wren had already gotten his answer. He needed a strong hefty beak to become beautiful.
Eventually, he came across a hummingbird among the flowers.
“Wow! You can zip from flower to flower faster than any bird I’ve ever seen! Say, do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“Scoot over a bit so I can get to this flower! And who knows? I certainly don’t…. ”
But the wren had already gotten his answer. He needed to be small and fast to be beautiful.
The wren continued his flight, gliding carelessly wherever he wanted.
Except maybe a little too carelessly. Soon enough, the wren crashed into a bundle of feathers
Stumbling on the ground, the wren looked up in shock to find an
But the wren had already gotten his answer. He needed to be tall and mighty to be beautiful.
“I must ask, do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“Sorry fella, but I can’t say.” The ostrich boomed.
“Your grand height lets you tower over the world in triumph!” the wren yelled from below.
The wren began heading home, but someone caught his attention across from him– a Scarlet Macaw! Her feathers were bright and flashy like a rainbow.
“Your feathers are made of so many colors that create a work of art on their own! Please tell me, do you know what makes a bird beautiful?”
“I don’t know…” the macaw began, “But must I say, dear wren,”
“I think you are very beautiful”
After a long flight the wren landed back next to the pond. He thought about all the different birds he’d seen today.
Some birds had cool blue feathers
Some birds had loud, grand voices
Some birds had shining yellow eyes
Some birds had a strong hefty beak
Some birds were small and fast
Some birds were tall and mighty
Some birds had bright flashy colors
The wren had finally found his answer. What made a bird beautiful was..
nothing.
But also,
Maybe there was no answer to beauty. It could come in any form anyone could think of.
everything.
Except in hungry cats.
Hungry cats are always scary
