AROUND THE INDUSTRY
by Kiley McKinna
Time Measured At The Speed Of Light.
It’s been said that while the days can be long, the years are short. In today’s fast paced, information at your fingertips, hectic world we live in, that statement has never been more true. It doesn’t seem all that long ago, I was tying me first tie and heading to my first Limousin sale. Now, some 17 years later, much water has passed under the bridge, yet many aspects of our business have not changed much.
Opportunity abounds to carve your own unique path.
The registered cattle business has always been and probably always will be a place where inventive and creative cattlemen thrive. Pick up any sale catalog or log in to any online sale (of any breed) and you will see a wide variety of genetics being offered. Some place extra emphasis on calving-ease, some on growth, while others are outliers based on maternal or carcass characteristics. Regardless, the bottom line is, there are buyers for just about each and every type of beef animal we produce. That is assuming you cover the basic bases necessary for profitable beef cattle production.
As Rooster said in Top Gun: Maverick “It’s not the plane, it’s the pilot”. Once you create those genetics, it’s up to you to get those cattle in front of the buying public. The best critter in the world is of little value if you are the only one who knows it exists.
Faces Changes.
Sadly, some of the best “pilots” this breed has ever seen are no longer at the contols. We have lost some of the breed’s most influential men recently. This entire issue could be filled with the achievements of these four, but suffice is to say the breed would not be on the solid footing it is today without the efforts of Jimmy Linthicum, Ken Holloway, Herman Symens and Keith Kissee. Rest in peace men, knowing we will do our level best to continue breeding, promoting and growing this breed based upon the lessons you taught us.
Don’t take a knife to a gunfight.
When it comes to promotion and marketing, the four men mentioned above were keenly aware of using the right tool for the job. Previously, print media and word of mouth were the only ways to spread the word. Now, we have the web, Facebook, Instagram, cell phone videos, etc., etc. Each tool has value and, when used in context, has the ability to put your program in front of many prospective buyers.
It is an investment, not an expense.
There is an old adage that goes something like this...don’t make your first ad the one for your dispersal. While fairly self explanatory, I would be remiss if I didn’t expand a bit. There is no denying that production expenses are at levels beyond most of our comfort levels. That said, when trimming expenses, I caution you in cutting your marketing budget too deeply. In times like these, maximizing the value of every animal born on the ranch is more important than ever.
The same can be said for the affiliate organizations that help a breed tick. Whether it be making sure you register and transfer all of your animals with NALF, or supporting the next generation of Limousin cattlemen through NALJA, now is not the time to pull up short. They need our support through thick and thin. They are here to serve you. We should find ways to make sure they have the resources to do so.
Extend a warm welcome.
It is my pleasure to announce that Sarah Anne Johnson has been added to the Limousin365 team, following the departure of Northern Sales Representative Will Bollum. Many of you know Sarah through her storied involvement as a NALJA member. She will be handling the northern territory from a print and digital media standpoint, and I encourage you to introduce yourself to Sarah. Her job is to help you succeed and the better she knows you and your program, the more likely she will be able to steer your marketing and promotional efforts in the correct direction.
The wheels keep turning.
The fall sale season is cranking up, and despite the industry challenges we face, it is shaping up to be a good one. As time allows, I encourage you to attend to as many sales and industry events as possible. The people you meet and the relationships you forge will pay dividends in the long run. That is a proven fact.
In closing, time is a precious commodity, and while it may be moving at the speed of light, that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take time to smell the roses and appreciate all we have accomplished as a breed. There is plenty of work left to be done, but often times, a reflection on the past leads to a clearer vision of the path for the future

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
by Bruce Lawrence
Greetings to All,
As we prepare for fall weaning, harvest and breeding, this is one of the most beautiful times of the year as us Limousin breeders and Agricultural providers see the fruits of our labor from this past year. So much work goes into the production of high quality seedstock cattle with additional effort on data capture and record keeping, enabling us to offer tremendous cattle to our customers. It takes special folks to become seedstock cattle breeders. Achieving this during a time of increased production cost is commendable and very much appreciated.
It finally rained on the South Plains of Texas (so I trust it must have rained everywhere). We certainly want to thank the Lord above for sending this moisture for the land. Times like this drive home the importance of having efficient cattle that can still thrive in adverse conditions and still help keep a cattle producer in business with least cost production practices. I can not think of a better breed to do this than Limousin and Lim-Flex® cattle.
Your NALF board had a productive and successful board meeting in August! I would like to personally thank my fellow board members and our NALF staff for their sincere dedication to our NALF membership! We are working toward continual improvement on production-oriented EPDs and indices that are industry relevant and critical to least cost production practices which will help us make superior genetics moving forward.
Look for changes from the NALF office to be announced in the near future designed to assist our membership record their registrations as well as recording of their individual performance data. Additionally, the commercial marketing budget the NALF board has approved is comprised of a balance of digital and print advertising for breed promotion that most effectively covers the nation’s commercial cow operations given the dollars we have to work with. We will also continue to utilize our social media venues, electronic marketing outlets and industry press releases to get the word out about our cattle.
I also want to remind our membership as you prepare to make your fall A.I. matings that there is a tool you can use on DigitalBeef that will help you to determine the EPDs and breed percentage matings from individual sires. This is available under the “Tool” window, then go to the mating projection calculator. If you need more information, feel free to contact a NALF staff member and they will be glad to walk you through the process.
I look forward to seeing each of you in Oklahoma City at Cattlemen’s Congress and the NALF Annual Meeting, National Sale and Genetics On Ice Benefit Auction.
We will keep you posted on our NALRF research project moving forward and look forward to seeing you at our annual events in January !
See ya there,
Bruce

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
by Mark Anderson Executive Director North American Limousin Foundation
NALF is looking forward to the fall sales in addition to the spring bull sale season of 2023 as we head toward winter. As most of you are aware, severe drought in much of the Central United States, along with the impact of inflation on production cost for ag producers has been a challenge. Producers have had to contend with higher production costs for feed, fuel, fertilizer, etc., along with regional drought conditions throughout a good portion of cattle producing country. All of production agriculture continues to face challenges given the current operating environment and regulatory requirements of political foes that may not realize where their food comes from. Higher cattle prices are needed and being seen across the country and are critical to producers given the inflationary environment we live in today.
Given this, it is critical that we promote the positive traits of the Limousin breed to help commercial producers remain in business with efficient cattle that possess superior genetics for least cost production practices. This will require that we continue to capture more data that helps us produce the right kind of cattle to remain competitive in the beef industry. Limousin cattle have feed efficiency advantages and superior dry matter conversion rates which are of paramount importance given today’s high feed cost. This, combined with superior carcass traits and the advantages of superior maternal traits that lead to the production of an easy keeping cow in hard range conditions will be of value to most commercial cattlemen.
Documenting some of these advantages through independent third party research is why the NALF board recently formed the NALRF (North American Limousin Research Foundation). As many of you may be aware, NALF has partnered with two commercial Angus cowherds in Northern Montana to generate enough test progeny to conduct third party research at South Dakota State University next fall.
Phase one of the NALRF research project is now complete with 453 head of commercial Angus cows, which were bred on two separate ranches in Montana in early June via the 7&7 synchronization process. The commercial cows were artificially inseminated to three different contemporary groups of nine sires consisting of Purebred Limousin, Lim-Flex® and Angus bulls of similar EPD equivalency.
Progeny of the matings will be shipped to SDSU in the fall of 2023 for the independent third party research. The NALF board hopes to document the effects of heterosis and its impact on feed efficiency for feed conversion rates while monitoring dry matter intakes and ADG on an individual basis. Additionally, individual carcass data will be captured that can be traced back to the nine sires within the three different contemporary groups of bulls.
Harvest dates will be scheduled to three different shipping dates of increasing outweights. This should measure the effects of maintaining feed efficiency and its impact on carcass trait profitability in today’s era of larger outweights on fed cattle. It is not uncommon to see steers marketed now at 1,600-1,700 lbs. This typically requires some form of crossbreeding to have an animal that can reach these larger outweights and remain feed efficient with a desirable carcass, both quality and yield grade. NALF will keep you posted as the research progresses.
The NALF board strongly feels the time is past due for research that can demonstrate the advantages of using Limousin genetics in a crossbreeding program on English-based cows. Positive complementarity effects achieved for performance production traits, maternal effects and advantages in carcass merit need to be documented to proactively promote the advantages of using our genetics in the commercial cattle industry.
Along those lines, the NALF board is also working toward new EPD development and resulting indexs that are more current and critical to production cost in today’s operating environment. At the August board meeting, with the help of Dr. Robert Weaber, NALF will soon publish both an ADG and dry matter intake EPD. These two EPDs will be combined with other production and carcass traits to develop a more current terminal index that is more reflective of today’s larger outweights on fed cattle and larger premiums on quality grades in addition to yield grade differences.
The NALF board is also moving forward with the development of a maternal index. Both the updated terminal, and maternal index will be utilizing the IGENDEC software that is provided by the Beef Improvement Federation. NALF is intent on utilizing all the captured phenotypes that members have submitted for feed intake systems to enhance the accuracy of the new EPDs and Indices moving forward.
This has come on the heels of a large influx of carcass data phenotypes that have been added into the NALF herdbook over the last three years to dramatically enhance carcass trait EPD accuracies. Presently, NALF has added more than 120,000 head of actual carcass data phenotypes into its herdbook, which is by far the largest capture of carcass phenotypes of any current breed association to date.
NALF will continue to promote the use of data and upgraded technology in the future and representative of what has been a driving factor the past 50 years for NALF members. The NALF board is intent on maintaining a quality, data driven herdbook that focuses on data capture that will increase EPD accuracies to make genetic improvement a more efficient task for our membership.
The NALF board and staff would like to thank the membership for your continued dedication to the foundation through these trying times of inflated production costs for all of agriculture. The need for superior genetics to supply to the commercial cattle industry has never been greater and Limousin cattle are in a much better position to fulfill that need than ever before

MEMBER AND INDUSTRY NEWS BRIEFS
NALF Board of Directors Makes Changes Effective September 1, 2022
Genomic Testing on A.I. Sires and Donor Dams
The NALF Board of Directors voted unanimously to change the requirements for genomic testing on A.I. sires and donor dams. Effective September 1, 2022, members will only be required to genomically enhance A.I. sires and donor dams with the 100K panel versus the 150K test moving forward. This will be equally effective from a market standpoint, and will also be a cost savings to membership, with the 100K genomic panel priced at $57/hd. with free parentage, versus the 150K at $85/hd. as in years past. This results in a $29/per hd. savings to membership. To receive an A.I. sire permit, all sires will be required to have the 100K genomic test with parent verification and be free of any defects versus the 150K testing requirement beginning September 1, 2022.
Credit Card Fees
Currently, members are able to pay their bills by check or credit card on their Digital Beef accounts. The NALF board voted unanimously to continue to do this for member payables, but beginning September 1, 2022, members will be required to pay the merchant fee associated with using a credit card for online payment versus NALF covering the usage fee, which is approximately 3.54%. This is standard business practice for credit card bill payments for most businesses today. Members can still pay by check if they wish to avoid the credit card usage fee.
Performance Only Data
Members that utilize “performance only” for performance data on their cattle will be able to continue to do so, but those cattle will not receive EPDs beginning September 1, 2022. The NALF board voted unanimously to publish EPDs on registered cattle only. Members utilizing the “performance only” category to record performance data will not receive EPDs on those cattle effective September 1, 2022, and must register their cattle accordingly to receive EPD information.

Riding Shotgun
Paradigm Shift
As we travel the highways and by-ways of the Limousin family and breed, we often cuss and discuss the cattle business, sports, politics, great cheeseburgers and most of the time, the promotion and marketing of Limousin cattle.
Through “Riding Shotgun” we invite you to join us in the righthand seat, so that we can let you in on what we find to be our marketing pet peeves, shortcuts and some of the favorite habits of top-flight professional producers. Grab a cup of coffee and take the ‘shotgun seat’—we are pleased to have you riding along.
consider a paradigm shift regarding your sale system. Some of what we talk about in the following points may already be in your program, if so, great, if not, maybe you need to think about the future and how your operation can adapt. These are only the opinions of the writer, and don’t forget he’s a gray haired, potbellied old guy.
1. Build a picture/video pen. The proper pen and system for shooting great pictures and videos is the basis for new marketing. Consult with your photographer and videographer, think about the sun angles and the pen size. Build a pen you can easily get livestock into and out of. This will be the center of your marketing activities as time goes on.
Webster defines a “paradigm shift” as a fundamental change in approach or underlying assumptions. I think it is time we consider a paradigm shift in marketing and promotion of purebred seedstock. When I started this journey we took pictures with film, sent ads by FedEx and mailed catalogs to everyone with an address. Those days are thankfully long gone. Now the mail costs 10 times more, is ten times slower and the mailbox if full of junk that most people recycle before reading.
As you can see from the calendars of the breed’s top sales managers and top programs, the new way to reach the most people and to maximize your exposure and minimize your expense, is online in some form or another. Whether it is an eblast, digital advertising, or online sale, you have a way to reach people that you never had before. Using old methods and ignoring new tools available to you will leave you behind in the marketing arms race and cost you more at the same time.
You still must recognize the core principles of marketing, but it’s time to
2. Find a videographer and or photographer you can interact with. Learn about their past work and schedules. If you want to learn how to do this yourself, fine, but KNOW, this is a skill and like all skills, it takes practice and patience. It takes the proper tools and proper timing. I heartily recommend hiring a professional, the benefits far outweigh the costs. Find someone you like and stay connected, get on their schedule and be ready on the day they arrive.
3. Sale day is now PICTURE DAY. In the past, you schedule your feeding program and clipping program for the cattle to be ready on sale day. Today, the schedule is moved forward. SALE DAY is picture and video day. You will be presenting your product to the public based on what they look like on that day. Have them ready for condition, disposition and fit, because what the client observes in your videos is what draws them to bid on your product.
4. Have cattle tattooed, lot numbered and tagged on video day. You will have customers passing through in the days before sale day and having the cattle tagged and identified will make it

easier for them to take notes and bid on your product later online or at the live auction.
5. Decide who your video/internet provider will be. Work with them establish a schedule for submitting videos, pictures and pedigrees. Find out what formats are the best for their system. Make sure your videographer is capable of fulfilling those requirements and hook them up with each other if needed.
6. Work to find email addresses of all of your past clients and make sure anyone who inquiries about your product leaves an email address and that you put them on your email list. Digital advertising can be built and distributed in hours, you are no longer dependent on a mail system that is slow and expensive.
7. Develop a social media platform and presence that works for you that you can easily maintain. All these digital platforms are fluid and can be updated immediately. Do you need to hire someone to do it for you? The platforms are here, are you utilizing them to your best advantage?
8. If you do still have a live auction, reconsider your cattle display and sale setup. Can the buyers see the cattle at their advantage and is the seating correct for TV-Video selling? Does your facility have proper internet access and usability? Have you posted the latest supplement sheet and sale order? Who is billing the buyers? Make sure you call all buyers and thank them for participating. Discuss payment and delivery and take good notes.
9. After sale day, it is more important than ever to communicate with your buyers and bidders. If you have an online auction, you do not have the face-to-face communication that used to happen on sale day. I recommend considering delivering your product—that way you get to shake the hand of every buyer. I also recommend that you try to visit with everyone that participated. Visit their operation when it works for you and establish a personal connection. It is still what makes the seedstock business work and the most enjoyable part. I can guarantee if you only have a sterile online presence, your time in the business will be short.
10. Work to keep up with technology. There are always new ways to do things, and most are faster and more efficient than what we have had in the past. Sticking your head in the sand will only limit the selling profile and profit your program can achieve.
All of the factors above consider live cattle or frozen genetics, so think about your situation and consider becoming a marketing guru. The good news is, in the old days we used to say most of your product is sold within 75 miles of your operation, now the worldwide web is your selling partner. The sky is the limit. Enjoy each other and what you do, it’s a great day to be in the Limousin business.

DO BETTER. BE BETTER.
by Randy Ratliff
Feeling very nostalgic…
when you realize how humbling it is that you are one of the many that are the vehicle for which people see and love their country and love their breed of cattle.
Listed below are a few thoughts I have in regards to where we are in our “Limousin” space.
Sacrifices that were made…
Those before us have sacrificed so much to make it just a little easier for the next person. So many have paved the way for all of us! It seems in anything we are involved in, there are always people who have dug the trenches and worked tirelessly to make a smooth path for the next generation. I feel for certain, as we go through life, we sometimes don’t pay enough attention to what it took for us to enjoy the present moments we have. I urge us all to stop and enjoy what is before us, as it can be taken away instantly.
Commitment to the breed remains the same…
Just like the many cattle people before us who helped us secure the Limousin breed as one of the top breed’s in the country, there had to have been a major commitment, tenacity and determination to get us to that level many years ago. I think we sometimes take for granted or very seldom think about how our forefathers got us to where we are in the industry space now. I urge us all to stop and enjoy what is before us, as it can be taken away instantly.
Rise above the fray…
The phrase of “keep your head down, work hard and be humble” can never ring loud enough in my eyes. In any business or hobby you submerge yourself into, there will always be drama. Rising above the fray seems to be the best scenario in most cases. Of course, we always need to protect our beliefs and standards, but from a “breed” point of view, anything and everything should be about what is best for the Limousin breed! We can get to an unbelievable place if we work as a team, but going at it solo with only your best interest in mind will get you to a very lonely place with not many standing with you. I urge us all to stop and enjoy what is before us, as it can be taken away instantly.
Up to us…
You can make money or inherit money, but it is up to you to earn the respect and to commit yourself to something bigger and better than ourselves. Breeds of cattle are made up of all different kinds of
people and for that we are grateful. What is lovely about the business is when those who can serve and give time and resources back. Do so in a very strong fashion and for that we are grateful for what we have been given and earned along the way. I urge us all to stop and enjoy what is before us, as it can be taken away instantly.
Let’s be the best we can be and surround ourselves with only the most caring and supportive people we can find to make our “Limousin breed” and the world a better place.
Sincerely, Randall O. Ratliff Ratliff & Co.

Bigger Than A Business Bigger Than A Business Symens Brothers uses the Limousin breed to serve the beef industry and consumers.
Lush grass paints itself across the green hills of northeastern South Dakota. The land sees all four seasons, from hot temperatures in the summer to snow in the winter, but the fertile ground is the perfect place to raise livestock.
It’s an oasis for cattle producers, a discovery made by the first generations of the Symens family in the early 1900s. Today, John Symens and his family raise registered Limousin cattle on that same ground where his grandfather built the family’s first cattle barn.
John; his brother, Paul; and John’s nephews, Warren and Brad, operate Symens Brothers. In addition to nearly 300 spring-calving cow-calf pairs, the four-generation strong partnership is also home to a feedlot and 1,500 acres of cropland where the family grows corn, soybeans and hay.
Paul is retired from the day-to-day activities on the farm. While John is slowly following his brother toward retirement, he is still
active in recordkeeping and management decisions for the cattle herd. Warren handles the feedlot, and Brad manages the crops.
“We all help each other out in the different areas,” John said, but he adds that their true success lies in managing their individual strengths: “We try to keep our areas of interest. We still make decisions across the board as far as everyone’s involved. We haven’t had too many problems, as long as we respect each other’s opinions and what we studied to do.”
Warren echoes his uncle. Though there comes the typical challenges of having so many close-knit people working together 24/7, Warren said their family tree is the operation’s biggest strength.
“It adds a degree of security and comfort knowing that it’s family,” he explains.
That mindset stems all the way back to John and Paul’s childhood. The boys and their seven other siblings were raised on the farm and actively involved in 4-H, leading to a love for livestock.

There’s a lot of pride and knowledge John gleaned from the generations before him that established the business—management decisions he, his brother and his nephews still implement today.
For example, John can’t remember a time when a feedlot wasn’t a part of this operation, and it is a tradition that has only grown stronger since it’s initial creation.
“My grandfather and father basically never raised anything or sold it until it was ready for market,” John said. “When Limousin was advertised as the carcass breed, it caught our attention.”
The diversification allows for cash flow and keeps his family busy year-round, Warren explains.
“Any farm or any business, even, is smart to diversify,” he adds.
As the years have ticked by, each area of the operation has had to adapt with the times to make forward progress. One of their best decisions, John said, was incorporating Limousin genetics into the herd.
“We definitely did believe after we fed them for a few years that they were the carcass breed,” John explains.
The Limousin calves resulted in more efficient cattle with higher yield grades. The bloodline also allowed the operation to expand its reach into the seedstock sector.
The breed is efficient and fast to grow, which Warren said makes them an ideal choice for a farm focused on carcass performance in their cattle’s genetics. Though the decision to incorporate the red-hided animals happened before Warren was a member of the partnership at Symens Brothers, he can recite the praises of the cattle just as well as John.

Northeastern South Dakota sees all four seasons, from hot temperatures in the summers to snow in the winter, but the fertile ground is the perfect place to raise livestock and the place the Symens family has called home since the early 1900s.
2023 will mark the 43rd year the operation has hosted an annual production sale. While cattle carrying the SYES prefix have gone to all parts of Canada and the United States, the pie table has had just as many satified customers.

“Muscle growth and efficiency is what we bring to the table,” Warren explains. “That’s not to say we aren’t putting effort into fertility and quality carcasses in the end, but the main thing that Limousin breed brings is muscle growth and efficiency.”
The entire Symens family takes great pride in producing animals that can benefit more than just their farm. John said they look to produce cattle that perform for their customers and have the ability to benefit the cattle industry as a whole.
Market demand dictates a lot of the breeding decisions, Warren adds. To make sure their stock are performing up to expectations, carcass data is collected on the pedigreed animals finished in the feedlot.
“There’s a real advantage to knowing how they feed, how they grow, how they carcass when they’re done,” Warren said.
Once data is recorded and utilized to identify top individuals at the operation, it’s turned in to the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF), where it can be used to create better genomics for all Limousin breeders.
The theme of aiming to create the best genetic database possible, for themselves and their peers, is one that has been seen with the family since the inception of the Symens’ herd.
“Being commercial producers first and working with genetics that way, we always believed that whichever breed we had, we could select for the traits we wanted,” John said.
But it’s been the Limousin breed that John said has prevailed. Since their arrival to the operation, the animals fit to the South Dakota environment with ease. The family selects for females with average milk production, docility, calving-ease and performance. Females that stay on the farm are deep bodied and have the capacity to convert roughage.
“We want performance. We want fertility,” John said. “We’re strict on our culling procedures. We don’t give a cow too many strikes.”
Animals that can’t keep up with the high standards are sent to the feedlot. For the quality calves, John said 80-90% of females will be kept and bred on.
Breeding decisions are made in hopes of producing calves that can be sold in the operation’s annual production sale. The first seven to eight years, the farm sold cattle private treaty. John proudly said 2023 will mark the 43rd year the operation has hosted an annual production sale.
Since their arrival to the operation, Limousin have proven to fit the South Dakota environment with ease. The family selects for females with average milk production, docility, calving-ease and performance. Females that stay on the farm are deep bodied and have the capacity to convert roughage.
Hamilton represents the unique combination of calving-ease with power. He comes to you in a moderate framed, deep bodied package with plenty of thickness. What’s more, his pedigree is different enough to be used on a variety of cows, both Purebred and Lim-Flex. From a numerical standpoint, he ranks in the top 35% or better for

The breed is efficient and fast to grow, which Warren said makes them an ideal choice for a farm focused on carcass performance. “Muscle growth and efficiency is what we bring to the table,” he said.
on registered animals, however, John said the farm has also been able to cater to seedstock customers.
Bulls from the sale are typically sold within a 100-mile radius of the operation, but Symens’ genetics have stretched across the nation and even into several Canadian provinces.
“From day one, the people that were starting to grow the Limousin breed seem to be on the same page as far as purpose and wanting to get along and help each other out,” John said. “We’ve always thought the people in the breed were as good as we could ask for.”
At the end of the day, it’s the customers that serve as the backbone for the business. From buying back calves from bull customers for the feedlot to reporting genetic achievements diligently, it’s always about the people just as much as it is the cattle.
It is a passion that goes beyond the operation’s borders, the state of South Dakota and even beyond their peers in the beef industry. The Symens family is always seeking new ways to provide a quality product to consumers looking to make beef the star of the dinner menu.
“My main goal has always been to have something that’s profitable to the beef industry,” John explains. “I want to raise something that can add genetics to the total industry—as long as the end product helps the beef industry.”
Warren said the Limousin breed is the key to making this dream a reality, and it is the Limousin breed that he and his cousin, Brad, are going to use to propel the Symens Brothers partnership into the future for generations to come.
“We’re not going to rest on the past or past successes,” he said. “We want to keep trying to make things better and keep producing a product that’s in demand for people. The way you do that is through genetics. It’s through the real-world practice of feeding those cattle out so you know what you’ve got, and it’s also through treating our customers right.”

HERMAN SYMENS
November 27, 1939 - July 16, 2022
Herman Symens, 82, of Sisseton, South Dakota, passed away July 16, 2022, after a long illness. He was a pioneer in the Limousin breed and a true friend of Limousin breeders, spending four decades breeding, feeding and promoting the cattle he loved.
He started with Limousin in 1970 when he and his brothers Irwin, Paul and John, began raising this new breed of cattle, Limousin, at Symens Brothers near Amherst, South Dakota. They were leaders in Limousin genetics, exhibiting many grand champion Limousin bulls at shows like the National Western Stock Show, the Black Hills Stock Show, and the South Dakota State Fair.
Herman, his wife, Judy, and their sons, moved from Amherst to Sisseton, South Dakota, in 1993 where they raised cattle at Symens Hills Ranch. They also owned and operated LIMI-Gene, Inc., a semen distribution company created in 1989 with the vision of providing the Limousin breed with a source of quality genetics.
Herman was not only actively involved raising Limousin cattle, but he also played a major role in the growth and acceptance of the breed. He served on the North American Limousin Foundation (NALF) Board of Directors from 1978 to 1984, serving as president of the association for two years in 1983-1984. He was held in high esteem by nearly all the seedstock producers of the Limousin breed. He was also a founding member and on the Board of Directors of the Heartland Limousin Association for many years. Herman was also on the South Dakota Limousin Board of Directors, serving as president for several years. He also judged many national junior and open shows in the United States and Canada.
He was a great supporter of all breeders, both young and old. He traveled across the country as well as internationally, buying and
selling cattle as well as exhibiting in many prestigious shows. Breeders sought out Herman for his opinion and advice on Limousin cattle. Mark Anderson, NALF Executive Director, said at his “Hall of Fame” induction, “Herman is considered a true friend of Limousin breeders, and he is a committed promoter of the breed. He has had a love of the breed and the people for more than 40 years, and he is passionate about the attributes of Limousin cattle.”
Herman has received many honors over the years. In 2015, he was inducted into the North American Limousin Foundation “Hall of Fame”, becoming the fifth Limousin breeder/promoter to achieve that high honor. At his induction ceremony, several Limousin producers from South Dakota, Minnesota and North Dakota spoke to his true dedication to agriculture and the Limousin breed. Dean Summerbell, Executive Secretary of the Heartland Limousin Association, said he thought Herman Symens forgot more about Limousin cattle than most producers will ever know.
In 2019 Herman retired due to ill health, and he and Judy moved from the ranch into Sisseton.
Herman is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy; sons Jim (Laura) of Claresholm, Alberta; and Joel (Gerlyn) of the Philippines; daughters Julie Symens of Sisseton; and Janelle (Brett) Symens of Aberdeen, South Dakota; and seven grandchildren; Leah (Justin) Hanson, Lexi (James) and Dillon (Annalesha) Bohlander, Colton, Cheyenne, and Colby Symens and John Symens; one great-grandson, Jhett Hanson; brothers David Symens, Paul (Faye) Symens, John (Shirley) Symens; sisters Aletha Prouty, Karen (Darrel) Jongeling, Doris Armstrong; sisters-inlaw Cleo Symens, Betty (John) Kendall, Nancy Herzog; brother-in-law Craig Schmidle; and many other relatives and friends.

Sarah Anne Johnson Joins The L365 Team
The principals at Limousin365 are pleased to announce the addition of Sarah Anne Johnson to the marketing team, following the departure of Northern Sales Representative Will Bollum.
“We are excited to have Sarah join the Limousin365 team,” said Randy Ratliff, Limousin365 ownership partner. “She brings enthusiasm, practical, real-world experience, and a genuine appreciation for the Limousin breed and its breeders.”
Sarah Anne Johnson is no stranger to the Limousin breed. She began exhibiting at the early age of four, at the 2000 American Royal in Kansas City. Leading her first Limousin female, SFKL Diamond 6171F, “Diamond Girl”, was the jump start to her long career in the Limousin breed. The tiny girl in an orange shirt was a memorable sight as Sarah showed many bred and owned individuals with the
influence of storied programs including Shadwell Farm, Minerich Land & Cattle and Fawley Farms.
Sarah traveled thousands of miles each year with her family to every Eastern Regional Show and National Junior Limousin Show and Congress possible until aging out as a junior exhibitor. Sarah and her family exhibited at Kentucky, Ohio and West Virginia State Fairs along with many North American International Livestock Expositions (NAILE). Not only did she exhibit her Limousin cattle across the country, she did so within the state of Ohio through the Ohio Cattlemen’s Association junior program (BEST Program- Beef Exhibitor Show Total) since its inception in 1999.
As a high school junior, Sarah became a director on the North American Limousin Junior Association Board and served in this capacity for four consecutive years. With a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communication and Animal Sciences from The Ohio State University, Sarah began assisting Randy Ratliff, R&R Marketing, to remain involved within the breed.
“I am excited to join Limousin365 and expand my involvement with a breed I have literally been involved with my entire life,” Johnson said. “I look forward to familiarizing myself with even more Limousin producers and their programs while assissting them with the marketing and promotion of their operations.”
Bob and Gwen Minerich of Minerich Land & Cattle along with herdsman, Ryan Carmichael, are credited with supporting Sarah as she built her own herd of Limousin cattle over the years. Mark Smith of Grassroots Genetics, Kelly (Long) Hall and Clint Hall were also integral in Sarah’s development both inside the breed and beyond.
Currently Sarah raises registered Limousin & Lim-Flex cattle with Coulton West in central Ohio. She is a sixth-generation beef cattle producer, Sales Specialist, Marketing and Communications Strategist, and works in crop seed sales for Syngenta. Connect with her at 614266-2646 or sarah@limousin365.com.
Johnson will serve Limousin producers in the Northern half of the United States and Canada. Her responsibilities will include working with Limousin breeders to promote and market their programs through both the Limousin365 digital and print platforms.

McLellan Ranch
A South Dakota Mainstay
by Bev Summerbell
Dale and Terri McLellan of Lantry, South Dakota, have been raising Limousin cross commercial feeder calves on their family ranch since 1979. Their ranch consists of rolling hills and covers three counties; Zeibach, Dewey and Meade. They currently have a 650 Angus-based cowherd, using Limousin bulls to provide a high-quality product that is popular for industry buyers to feed out and sell to the packer.
In 1979, Dale’s father and uncle purchased a Limousin X Hereford halfblood bull from Kirby Briggs and produced some black, brockel faced mother cows. From that cross, they went on to purchase purebred Limousin bulls and have continued with that program.
They background their heifers, but sell their steer calves earlier to accommodate the needs of the feedlot buyers.
In addition to their 650-cow herd, they farm nearly 2,000 acres of corn, wheat and sunflowers, plus more than 2,000 acres of hay. In order to provide their pasture requirements, they use more than 9,000 acres of grass for their herd.
The sometimes unforgiving, harsh weather in the plains of west central South Dakota has proved to be a challenge for the family as they work to survive the dry conditions and early snowstorms. In

2013, an early October snowstorm killed over one-third of their cow herd, but they have persevered and remained loyal to their ranching responsibilities. The McLellans have maintained a well-respected reputation among South Dakota producers.
The McLellans believe the Limousin breed is a perfect cross for raising feeder calves to market to the beef industry. They have been very successful raising sound calves that possess the genetics for a highquality product that has been a popular choice for industry buyers to feed out and sell to the packer.
Dale likes the hybrid vigor that Limousin-crossed calves possess. When purchasing bulls, their selection criteria includes light birth weights, feed efficiency and strong performance. They use a ratio of one bull to 25 cows on average, and they utilize 40-45 bulls for breeding each year.
For the past several years, they have sold their calves to Wulf Cattle of Morris, Minnesota. The McLellan’s also purchase several bulls each year from the Wulf Cattle operation. In addition, they have also purchased bulls from South Dakota breeders Schott Limousin, Peterson’s L7 Bar Limousin and Ludens Family Limousin, as well as Venner Limousin in Iowa, Leishman Limousin and Hunt Limousin in Nebraska, Duff Limousin in Minnesota and Spring Creeks Cattle Co. in Wisconsin.
Today, the McLellan operation includes Dale and his wife, Terri, their son, Kerry, and grandson, Klate. In 2014, Dale was awarded with the Commercial Producer of the Year award by the South Dakota Limousin Association as well as the Heartland Limousin Association. Dale has served as a director on the South Dakota Limousin Association Board of Directors, retiring this year. The McLellan family is very active in their community and church. They maintain strong ties to the West Central South Dakota way of life.
The McLellans believe the Limousin breed is a perfect cross for raising quality feeder calves to market to the beef industry. Dale especially likes the hybrid vigor that Limousin-crossed calves possess.
Dale and Terri McLellan of Lantry, SD, have been raising Limousin cross commercial feeder calves on their family ranch since 1979.

GEORGE HUBBARD
George Hubbard is from Miami, Oklahoma. He currently manages Stonehill Land and Cattle, a 500 head cow-calf and 1,000 head stocker operation in Miami. They use Lim-Flex and Angus bulls on their Angus-based cows and raise their own replacement females. They background their weaned calves and then market them through different avenues. He and his family also own a small herd of Limousin cattle and a background stocker operation.
George graduated from Oklahoma State University in 1992 and was a member of the 1991 National Champion Livestock Judging Team. George served as the director of junior activities for the North American Limousin Foundation for seven years. He was then hired by Magness Land and Cattle of Colorado where he ran their fall calving cowherd in Miami for 18 years.
He is a past president of the Oklahoma Limousin Breeders Association (OLBA) and currently serves on the OLBA Board of Directors. He and his family are past recipients of the OLBA Family of the Year and Stonehill Land and Cattle was a past recipient of the OLBA Commercial Producer of the Year.
George and his wife, Suzanne, have three children, Grant, Shelby and Carter. All three have competitively shown cattle and have been active with the North American Limousin Junior Association.
MARK HADEN
Mark and his sons operate Buck Ridge Cattle Co. together as a family partnership in southern Missouri on more than 2,000 acres of fescue dominant pasture and hay ground. The Buck Ridge headquarters are in Wright County. Mark and his wife, Marta, have three grown children: Whitney (Nathan), Nick, and Logan (Jenna). The Haden family has continued to grow over the years, now with six grandchildren: Matthew, Bailey, Harper, Lincoln, Levi and Lukas.
The Buck Ridge Cattle Co. operation started with humble beginnings and has been in a constant state of growth over the last 20 years. Initially, Mark bought nine cows to give his sons some chores and responsibilities. Those nine commercial cows have turned into a life’s passion to produce high-quality cattle that go on to serve their customers well.
They currently breed more than 300 females annually, using both artificial insemination and embryo transplant. Sires are individually selected for each female to give them the best calf crop possible every year. The Haden’s breeding philosophies have continued to evolve over the years, but they have always stayed disciplined in their approach and expectation that each cow must earn the right to stay in the Buck Ridge Cattle Co. herd by breeding back on time, raising a quality calf and being problem free.
Mark’s passion for the Limousin and Lim-Flex breed has never diminished. “God has blessed my family and I with the land, cattle and passion that make up Buck Ridge and we are very excited about future possibilities,” states Mark.

Lim-Flex Hybrids
Bring Out The Best Of Multiple Breeds
by Jaclyn Krymowski for NALF
Lim-Flex animals, both genetically and phenotypically, show many strengths desired by both producers and consumers. In addition to the general “hybrid vigor” advantage of crossbreeding, those who select Limousin genetics for their programs also bring in the many maternal and terminal traits the breed is known for.
This means producers get a hardy animal efficient in multiple areas, along with quality progeny coupled with strong brood cows.
For consumers, the cross provides heavy muscling with great marbling for quality cuts of beef. (And it’s even done at a higher level of efficiency making it a win for the planet as well!)
The “flex” part of the Lim-Flex name derives from the flexibility and efficiency that comes with the pairing. The full name is Flexible Limousin Efficient Cross (X). Besides here in the U.S., it has also been a boon to the Australian beef sector.
Embracing the Flex
Cattle breeders coming from an Angus background, the most populous beef breed in the U.S., can add performance and increase daily weight gain with the addition of Limousin genetics. The resulting hybrid maintains the do-ability and marbling of Angus and the growth and muscle with the Limousin influence, thus maximizing the yield, according to Raven Limousin.
Many producers find they like the versatile ability of the cross and the ability to still get “the work done”. The Lim-Flex breed allows for
all-around flexibility in terms of carcass merit and maternal abilities. It also opens the door to more abundant marketing thanks to the consistent high dressing percentage of the progeny. Both productive females and terminal offspring show high levels of efficiency when it comes to feed conversion.
Something especially attractive about Limousin genetics for crossbreeding is that it pairs well with different cattle varieties, that being both established beef lines and dairy cattle.
Pairing with Angus
With the proliferation and premium prices associated with Certified Angus beef, many producers flocked to the British breed. While being on the forefront of commercial beef, Angus animals also pose some challenges regarding efficiency in areas of feeding and carcass yield.
But, Limousin genetics paired with Angus produces a low proportion of bone and fat in addition to a high percentage of saleable meat that is great for marketability. In addition, they guarantee excellent productivity at a low cost.
From a producer’s standpoint, Limousin also balance quite well with the Angus personality and some of their most desired traits. Limousin bulls tend to bring lighter frames to their offspring to assist with calving ease while not giving up on confirmation, muscling or live weight. (Both Limousin bulls and cows are also touted for their fertility.)

The heavy Limousin muscling stems from a unique gene allele— one that doesn’t negatively impact the tenderness or meat quality.
The Angus cross in the Lim-Flex breed balances the Limousin traits. Their influence brings another level of marketing to the progeny and meat. Though Limousin provides the muscle mass, Angus provides the tenderness and marbling, or intramuscular fat, desired by the market. Angus already have a high dressing percentage, and this benefits the efficiency of the Limousin breed.
Dairy Impact
Dairy producers looking for better profit margins have taken a keener interest in breeding some of their lower value dairy animals to beef crosses for offspring that fetch more in the beef market. Limousin, with its favorable ribeye area, abundant muscling and beef quality, is a perfect complement to other dairy breeds who have marbling but lack the right beef structure.
A great example of this is illustrated in the pairing of Limousin bulls with Jersey cows. The Jersey breed is known for its ability to marble very well, but its small frame and lack of muscling make straightbred calves very poor candidates for beef buyers and processors. Luckily the Lim-Flex hybrid solves many of those issues.
Wulf Cattle in Morris, Minnesota, has worked with dairy farmers to help select the best Limousin sires to help meet their goals. Their “Beef Builder” dairy hybrids have significant gains over straightbred Jersey calves in areas of average daily gain, hot carcass weight and
ribeye area all while consuming significantly less feed to gain. Combined, these all worked to make a hybrid Jersey bull calf as much as 10 times as profitable compared to a straightbred.
Other Benefits of the Lim-Flex
The compatibility of Limousin with other beef breeds provides producers with genetic options that have the goal of using the muscling and efficiency of Limousin and the marbling and maternal qualities from the Angus breed.
Oklahoma State University highlights how the powerful genetic blend allows flexibility for seedstock and marketable progeny with desirable dressing percentages and high yields. Additionally, the females adapt well not only in terms of efficiency as mentioned previously, but also to a range of environments.
The ability to adapt to a multitude of environments allows for the animal to be hardy in various extremes. Lim-Flex animals are not only hardy when it comes to the environmental changes, but their calving-ease traits and maternal aspects from Angus make them great mothers.
Without a doubt, Lim-Flex has impacted the industry for both producers and consumers in a positive way. The ability to beautifully blend some of the best qualities of Angus and Limousin together has shown many proven benefits. Angus provides the marbling and goget-it that compliments the heavy muscling, hardy Limousin. Overall, the Lim-Flex was breed for the flexibility in a multitude of traits, and it fits the bill for both the consumer and producer.

Leaps and Bounds
How an ongoing collaboration is ramping up the accuracy of carcass data for Limousin sires and pushing NALF to the head of the class among breed associations for sheer volume of carcass data records. It’s a win-win-win scenario for feeders, breeders and even dairy producers.
by Sharla Ishmael
It’s often in the halls between meetings where you’ll learn the most important information or meet someone with an idea that can change your business. In this story, it was a conversation at a convention about 10 years ago between longtime Limousin breeder, Jerry Wulf, and renowned feedyard consultant and cattle feeder, Dr. Kee Jim.
Wulf told Jim about a partnership between Wulf Farms and Riverview, an integrated agricultural operation with a large dairy segment. The short version is that in 2010 Riverview started incorporating more Jersey cows into the herd, because all of the milk was going to cheese. The problem was there was no market for the Jersey bull calves and it wasn’t logical to use sexed semen for replacement heifers on the whole herd, as only the top heifers would make the cut. Enter Limousin.
“We said to Riverview, ‘Let’s try to breed the rest to Limousin and Lim-Flex,’” Wulf explains. “We calved the first set out in 2011 and marketed the first Beef Builder calves to Tyson in 2012. Prior to that, dairy steers of any breed sold at a big discount. We immediately avoided that dairy discount by changing the body type to a beef conformation. Plus, we had a market for them.”
Jim thought the idea was intriguing and stayed in touch with their progress on the Beef Builder program.
“Three or four years later, at G.K. Jim Farms, we started buying them as feeder cattle,” Jim says. G.K. Jim Farms is a big player in the
feedlot world, with yards from Texas to Alberta (See Sidebar). Add to that the software and data management expertise of Jim’s feedlot consulting firm, not to mention all of the Beef Builder cattle fed out by Wulf Cattle as well, and you’re looking at a serious volume of data right at their fingertips.
Wulf says one of the big advantages of this program was because all the dairy cows were bred by AI. That meant as long as they were tracking the sires, they would have a large commercial database of known registered sires which is very rare in the beef world.
“All of our arrangements with packers involve the transmission of data back to the individual and we’ve been able to collect a very large

“Dairy steers have low yields and carcass weights. Limousin has the highest yields of any major beef breed in North America. They are known for cutability. Dairy brings quality and marbling to the table; they just need the muscling, growth and feed efficiency offered by Limousin and Lim-Flex,” says Jerry Wulf, explaining the rationale behind the beef on dairy Beef Builder program.

amount of carcass data,” Jim adds. “I believe the largest amount of any carcass data now for any breed would be in the NALF system. And it’s growing by about 5,000 to 6,000 head each month.”
“This is going to dramatically improve the value of carcass EPDs for Limousin and Lim-Flex,” Wulf adds. “EPDs will change—some better and some worse. But it will arm Limousin breeders with a better toolbox and dramatically improve the accuracy of our carcass data.”

Big-time cattle feeding businesses
Dr. Kee Jim grew up on his family’s Hereford ranch, north of Kamloops, British Columbia, and attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. He still owns some cows, but his large-scale business interests lie on the feeder side.
G.K. Jim Farms is one of the larger cattle feeding companies in North America, with a stable of businesses including G.K. Jim Farms, Rimrock Cattle Co, NewCan LP, Cattleinc Inc, Silverado Cattle Inc, Taweel Cattle Co. Ltd, Korova Feeders Ltd, Diamond Feeders, Quality Beef Producers LP, CanTex Feeders LP, Tierra Blanca Cattle Feeders LP and Ordway Cattle Feeders LP.
Add to that, Jim is the founding partner of Feedlot Health Management Services, which was acquired by TELUS Agriculture in 2020. FHMS is a multi-national feedlot consulting and management company, of which he is the global head of animal health and agriculture. Started in 1983, the company provides services in Canada, the U.S., Central and South America, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China and Russia. In the last 15 years, FMHS has added calf grower operations as well as dairy health and management services.
Somehow, he has also managed to find time to serve on the boards of several beef industry organizations in Canada and has an impressive list of awards for his contributions to the cattle business and veterinary profession, including being recognized in 2021 as one of Canada’s Top 10 Innovators in Canadian agriculture.
Jim’s business interests continue to grow. In fact, he is a principal investor in a $100 million, state-of-the-art feedyard being built in southwest Nebraska that will be the largest newly-build feedlot in the U.S. in probably 40 years. Blackshirt Feeders plans to utilize technology like roller-compacted concrete for cleaner pens, reduced weather risks (no mud) and it will keep the footprint of the yard approximately 50% of a traditional dirt-floor yard of similar capacity. Blackshirt Feeders plans to build out for a 100,000 head capacity and should be completed in the next couple years.

quickly as we’re picking up data for ribeye area, carcass weight, yield grade, marbling and back fat, and you can use that in combination with your ultrasound data.
“For breed associations, it’s very rare to have members with enough numbers and the ability to feed out their own cattle, and then have the ability to track parentage of both sires and dams,” Anderson adds. “Most folks that are raising commercial bulls to sell, those bulls go out and breed cows but unless they can track those feeder cattle and have parentage markers on sires and dams, you can’t put the data together.”
He explains the accuracy values on bulls represented in this collaboration can jump by 0.20 to 0.30 right away. So, if their accuracy started at 0.40 to 0.50, that means it jumps up to 0.70 to 0.80. Compared to depending solely on ultrasound data, that’s a big deal for sorting desirable sires out at a faster pace.
“Feedlot Health has been very critical in getting the data set put together, along with IGS and Dr. Weaber,” Anderson explains. IGS, or
International Genetic Solutions, is the multi-breed genetic evaluation collaborating with several breed association partners, including NALF, to enhance beef industry profitability.
“Probably two years ago, with their help, we ran heritabilities so we could be very comfortable we had the breed effects sorted out in this data set, particularly with Holstein and Jersey,” Anderson says. “The other thing this collaboration has done is encourage more breeders to start tracking bulls out onto the ranches where they’re selling their feeder cattle. We have a fair amount of cattle breeders that are also cattle feeders, so it’s starting to multiply.
“For me, it’s just a leap forward that closes the gap on tracking accuracies for carcass traits in a real-world feedyard environment,” he adds. “We’re feeding cattle to larger outweights now than we were three or five years ago. We’ve got more representative data for actual days on feed and these larger slaughter weights. That, along with feed

efficiency, is a pretty big deal when folks are trying to use some form of a crossbred animal going to a feedyard in a commercial environment.”
On the dairy side, the amount of extra value added to those steer calves is nothing to sneeze at.
“It’s not rocket science,” Wulf says. “Dairy steers have low yields and carcass weights. Limousin has the highest yields of any major beef breed in North America. They are known for cutability. Dairy brings quality and marbling to the table; they just need the muscling, growth and feed efficiency offered by Limousin and Lim-Flex.”
He also says they are looking at more than just carcass traits. With data collection of this scale, thanks to the dairy production system, there may be some hidden gems that come to light. For example, Jim says it’s too early to say for sure, but it appears some differences are emerging with respect to health outcomes between different sire groups.
Speaking of the future, Jim points out the beef on dairy programs, like Beef Builder, are not adding more of these cattle than there already were, it’s just replacing some of those Holstein steers that didn’t perform as well or have as much value.
“There are about 10 million dairy cows in the U.S. and about a million in Canada,” Jim says. “If you do the math, anywhere from 30% to as high as 50% could end up being beef on dairy depending on their metrics for replacements. I don’t think there is ever going to be 5 million beef on dairy steers in the feedyards, but we might get to 3.5 to 4 million.”
One would think with a proven record of how Limousin and LimFlex on dairy genetics perform, that could be an advantage for the breed if more dairies turn to beef on dairy programs.
“It’s obviously going to require a significant volume of beef semen to be produced and utilized,” Jim points out. “I don’t know the exact numbers, but you’re looking at a market for 10 to 15 million doses of semen. That’s a pretty big market—that wasn’t there before. It’s pretty big prize out there for doing it right.”

Feed Efficiency Critical In Drought Conditions
Low supplies of hay make feeding cattle a challenge. Elizabeth Picking, a University of Missouri Extension livestock specialist in southwestern Missouri, sees the effects of severe drought in her area—dwindling hay supplies, poor-quality hay, high prices and ponds going dry.
Under these conditions, cattle producers need to be more efficient with feed, Picking says. This involves testing forages and calculating the cost of energy and protein to get the best value and results.
Most county extension centers have hay sampling probes that producers can borrow for taking hay samples to test quality or nitrate content. Some offices have moisture and temperature probes for avoiding fires caused by hay that is too wet. Producers should send samples to a laboratory certified by the National Hay Testing Association.
Consider weaning older calves when short on feed, supplementing feed during critical periods and culling nonproducers, Picking says.
Reviewing forage quality and dry matter intake during growth and reproductive stage helps producers determine needs. Also, an understanding of protein and energy for spring and fall calving helps.
Cows need energy-producing supplements when hay supplies are low. Picking suggests a review of crude protein and total digestible nutrient percentages.
Producers can stretch hay supplies by substituting 1 pound of grain to replace 2-3 pounds of hay, she says. Cattle need at least 0.5% of their body weight in dry matter of forage per day. Cattle will initially appear gaunt and hungry but will adapt within two to three weeks.
One alternative is tubs of supplemental protein and minerals. They vary widely in price, contents and daily consumption and come in a cooked or block form. The moisture-dense blocks are usually cheaper than cooked tubs, but they may be more expensive per unit of nutrient. Blocks are easier to handle than cooked tubs, weighing 30-35 pounds rather than 100-500 pounds. They are best suited for small herds, Picking says.
Producers can also use salt to limit feed intake. Cattle can eat about 0.1 pound of salt per 100 pounds of body weight per day. Mix with commodity feed to limit intake if using a free choice feeder. Cattle can overeat, so it is essential to take care to limit supplies. Salt increases water needs, and this can be a problem when ponds run dry.
Another option is adding liquid feed on low-quality hay. This improves palatability, reduces dustiness and gives cows extra protein and energy. Picking says limit urea to no more than half of the daily protein source.
Stockpiled fescue can be fed when endophyte levels are lower in January and February. Graze stockpiled Bermuda grass early in winter, Picking says.

As summer comes to an end and temperatures start to cool down a bit, I hope this time of the year finds you well. I imagine many of you are wrapping up weaning and are getting into harvest. After preg checking this year, stop and think: where is your operation at currently? Has your crop of replacement heifers met your expectations? She’s deep, she’s sound, she has a nice set of numbers, but did she come up open?
Back in the ’90s, Colorado State University developed the EPD that we now know as stayability. But what exactly is stayability? Stayability, or cow longevity, is defined as the probability of a bull’s daughter to stay in the herd and remain productive until six years of age. In
most cases, cows culled before six years of age are not likely to recoup your initial investment. The majority of these cows being culled are for failure to breed, and with the high input costs we see today, cow fertility should be at the forefront. At the end of the day, higher fertility means more pounds to sell next year.
But how useful is the stayability EPD in the actual prediction of cow longevity? After all, the heritability of reproductive traits is low, suggesting that environmental factors play a huge role in the longevity of the cow herd. However, even in an optimally managed

environment, if genetics are lacking for cow longevity, an operation may see females being culled before they can meet their profitability threshold.
Dr. Randie Culbertson, American Simmental Association (ASA) and International Genetic Solutions (IGS) Lead Geneticist, and Dr. Jackie Atkins, Director of Science and Education at ASA examined this trait. Dr. Culbertson and Dr. Atkins studied more than 140,000 daughters in the IGS database from high accuracy stayability bulls.1 These bulls were ranked into percentile groups: 1-25, considered the top; 26-50; 51-74; and 75-99, considered the bottom. The percentage of daughters from these bulls remaining in the herd until six years old, and average number of calves were analyzed and compared.1 Their study found that 22% of females from the bottom percentile rank of stayability bulls reached six years old, compared to 49% of daughters from the top percentile ranks.1 In their March 2020 SimTalk article, Drs. Culbertson and Atkins deduced that “There is a clear increase in the average number of calves per cow as we move toward the top percentile. Daughters from sires in the top stayability quartile [25th percentile] averaged nearly two more calves in their lifetime compared to daughters out of sires in the lowest Stayability quartile [75th-99th percentile].”1 The study concluded that “In the context of genetic improvement, ignoring stayability EPDs will slow or reverse the genetic progress for this highly relevant trait.”1
As Limousin breeders, shouldn’t we always strive for progress? The cattle industry has a host of tools available for you to use, and I encourage you to explore these. In order to best measure genetic potential, EPDs need to be combined with phenotype and unbiased data reporting in order to be most effectively utilized. If a cow is in your herd has a calf, that calf needs to be reported and reported accurately. Reporting only the best of your calf crop is not doing your herd any favors. Registering a calf out of a cow then waiting four years to register her next calf is not positively contributing to her records, the sire’s records, or the data trends of your herd. Is her stayability EPD being accurately reflected if you only report a few calves in her lifetime? Are any of her EPDs being accurately reported if we pick and choose what data to report? At the minimum, these females need accurate performance data entered for each calf.
If it is in your budget, I highly recommend considering joining the LIMS whole-herd reporting system. Feel free to reach out to Tammy or myself with questions on whole herd reporting.
As one of the most economically relevant traits, I encourage each of you to not pass over the ST EPD in the next catalog you look at. The future is bright for this breed, and I look forward to talking with many of you in the upcoming months.

JUNIOR SCENE
by Shelby Hubbard NALJA President
Don’t Be Afraid To Step Out Of Your Comfort Zone
As I enter my final year of junior membership, I can’t help but look back and be extremely thankful for my time as a Limousin junior. I still remember my first junior nationals in Amarillo like it was yesterday. Even as an 8-year-old, I met so many people that have become lifelong friends. There is truly nothing better than seeing my Limousin family at shows. The older I get, and the more active I have become, I have realized the importance of a lot of things, and I’ve been able to take a more thankful perspective to shows because of it.
It seems that no matter what show you’re at, big or small, and regardless of who is judging that day, a grand drive speech can typically be expected. There aren’t many grand drive speeches that I remember completely, however most livestock evaluators always recommend,
“Tell the ones who helped get you here thank you” to the youth who are showing. While most of us are always thankful, we too often forget to tell each person who deserves it how thankful we are for what they have done for us.
I often find myself in a situation where I am breaking down a heifer and think, “I should really go shake so and so’s hand and tell them thank you.” But by the time I am done with that project, I may completely forget to go give the person(s) gratitude and wish I would have later because a handshake/hug will always mean more than a text in my opinion.

I challenge you all to take the time right now (yes, I mean right now) to tell those people who have played a significant role in your show career, “Thank you”. Whether it’s your parents/grandparents, agriculture teachers, show officials, or even some of your friends who always show up to help fit, words of encouragement and thanksgiving can go a long way. Growing up, I wish I would have used more words of encouragement in my daily life. I’ve heard it time and time again, but now at the age of 21 it really has sunk in that our time here on earth really does go by fast. Encouragement can provide people with the strength to look ahead and reach for their next goal. Instead of living for ourselves, we should all work at being the person the world needs us to be.
“Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.”
